India, UAE Working on Joint Health Projects in Kenya and Tanzania

  • India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are working on a joint initiative to establish health projects in Kenya and Tanzania and taking forward cooperation in food security within the I2U2 framework that includes the US and Israel.
  • These issues figured in the India-UAE joint commission meeting that was co-chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his UAE counterpart Sheikh Abdulla bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi.
  • A team comprising representatives of the Indian and UAE governments had visited Kenya and Tanzania to identify opportunities for joint projects in the health sector.

Africa's Oldest Dinosaur Discovered in Northern Zimbabwe

  • A team of palaeontologists discovered a new early skeleton that is so far, the oldest dinosaur skeleton ever found in Africa. It is estimated Mbiresaurus raathi was a long-necked dinosaur that was about 6 feet long, weighing between 10 and 30 kilograms. A graduate student at Virginia Tech discovered the mostly intact fossil in Northern Zimbabwe and it was unearthed over two digs in 2017 and 2019.
  • The discovery of Mbiresaurus raathi fills in a critical geographic gap in the fossil record of the oldest dinosaurs and shows the power of hypothesis-driven fieldwork for testing predictions about the ancient past.

Mike Frank Elevated as CEO of UPL Ltd, to be a Member of Board of Directors

  • Agriculture solutions provider UPL Corporation elevated Mike Frank as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UPL Ltd.
  • Frank would also be a member of the UPL Crop Protection Board of Directors.
  • UPL's Global Crop Protection (CP) business manages all CP assets outside of India.
  • Frank joined UPL Ltd in early 2022 as president and Chief operating officer of UPL's Crop Protection business based out of its London headquarters.

RBI Unlikely to Accept NBFCs' Requests for Bad-loan Exemptions

  • India's central bank is unlikely to give "shadow banks" exemptions from stricter bad-loan rules coming into force, essentially ending an advantage the non-bank financial firms have had over standard banks.
  • Non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) have asked the Reserve Bank of India to exempt smaller loans from the rules taking effect next month that are in line with those covering banks.
  • India had 10,000 shadow banks as of March 2021, the latest RBI data available, with assets of Rs. 54 trillion ($680 billion) or about one-fourth that of the banking sector.
  • Under the new norms, shadow banks will have to recognise bad loans on a daily basis, rather than monthly, as some now do. Non-performing loans can only be upgraded to performing after borrowers have paid all arrears.

Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade Develops User-interactive Dashboard for Industry Associations

  • The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) developed a user-interactive dashboard for industry associations and trade bodies. This new digital initiative would allow authorised user associations to lodge issues and suggestions for the Government so that their issues related to various departments can be resolved in a transparent manner.
  • The initiative is expected to help in the identification of procedural issues that lead to lower efficiency in logistics and higher logistics costs. The dashboard is expected to be launched for all authorised associations soon.

In an Election Year, West Bengal Topped in Fake News Cases on Social Media

  • West Bengal recorded the highest number of recorded cases against fake news on social media in 2021, accounting for about one-fourth of the total such cases across the country, according to NCRB data.
  • West Bengal reported 43 cases of fake news on social media with Kolkata alone recording 28 of these cases, according to data published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
  • Bengal witnessed a high decibel electoral battle in 2021 between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP with the two sides leaving no stones unturned in reaching out to the people.

Sarabjit Singh Takes Over Command of Air Force Station Jalahalli

  • Air Commodore Sarabjit Singh took over the command of Air Force Station Jalahalli from Air Commodore Nand Kumar Nair.
  • The Air Officer was commissioned into the Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) branch on October 6, 1992. He is an alumnus of Air Force Technical College, Defence Services Staff College, Wellington and College of Air Warfare, Secunderabad.
  • The Air Officer is a postgraduate in Software Systems, Defence & Strategic Studies and Human Resource Management.
  • In his 30 years of service, he has held various field and staff positions which included Engineering Officer and Senior Technical Officer in Radar units, Chief Engineering Officer in Foreign mission, Joint Director at Directorate of Personnel (Officers), and Director Computer Intelligence, surveillance & reconnaissance at Air Headquarters.

Cambodian, Japanese among Winners of Magsaysay Awards 2022

  • A Filipino children's rights advocate was named among the recipients for this year's Ramon Magsaysay Award regarded as Asia's version of the Nobel Prize.
  • The awardees are Sotheara Chhim, a mental health advocate from Cambodia; Gary Bencheghib, an anti-plastic pollution warrior from Indonesia, Tadashi Hattori, a sight-saving humanitarian from Japan and Bernadette J. Madrid from Philippines.
  • Bernadette J. Madrid, together with her fellow Asian honourees, will be conferred with the continent's premier prize and highest honour in formal Presentation Ceremonies to be held at the Ramon Magsaysay Centre in Manila on November 30.
  • Each will receive a certificate and a medallion bearing the likeness of the seventh Philippine president, who was posthumously referred to by the people as the "Idol of the Masses."
  • Incepted in 1958, the Ramon Magsaysay Award, named after the late Philippine president, celebrates his legacy and leadership example. This accolade is bestowed annually to individuals or organizations in Asia who possess the same selfless service and transformative influence of the late and beloved Filipino leader.

Three States to Set up Bulk Drug Parks to Boost Pharma Production

  • The Department of Pharmaceuticals has given 'in-principle' approval to the proposals of the three states —Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh—under the Scheme for 'Promotion of Bulk Drug Parks', an initiative to support drugs manufacturing in the country.
  • The scheme, notified in 2020 has a financial outlay of Rs. 3,000 crore. It aims to provide financial assistance to three states for establishing Bulk Drug Parks and aims to bring down the cost of manufacturing bulk drugs by creating world-class common infrastructure facilities.
  • The financial assistance to the proposed Bulk Drug Park in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh would be 70% of the project cost of common infrastructure facilities. In case of Himachal Pradesh, being categorised as a 'hilly state', the financial assistance would be 90% of the project cost.

UP Govt. Liable for Paying Compensation for Hooch Deaths, Says HC

  • The Allahabad High Court held the Uttar Pradesh government liable for paying compensation for deaths due to consumption of spurious liquor and directed it to file a reply within two weeks to a petition related to the death of 25 people after having hooch in Azamgarh in May 2021.
  • A division bench of justices SP Kesarwani and Saurabh Srivastava said prima facie the government has complete control and regulates the manufacturing and sale of liquor. "...[It] is also liable to pay a specified amount to the sufferer or successors of the deceased under the provisions of Mukhya Mantri Kisan Evam Sarvhit Bima Yojna, which provides for compensation on account of death or permanent disability due to poison etc."
