Sri Lanka Introduces Five-year Multiple Entry Tourist Visa Scheme
In an effort to boost the tourism industry amid the economic crisis, the Sri Lankan government extended its multiple-entry tourist visa to five years.
The country also issues single entry visas with a six-month stay period.
Cabinet agreed to extend five-year multiple entry tourist visas for 35 countries to help boost repeat tourism in Sri Lanka. A tourist can stay in Sri Lanka for six months in one stretch with this scheme.
Angola Ruling Party Wins Vote and President a Second Term
Angola's MPLA party was declared the winner of the closely fought election, extending its decades long rule in the oil-rich country and handing President Joao Lourenco a second term.
Official results announced by the National Electoral Commission (CNE) reported the People's Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) won 51.17 per cent of the ballots against 43.95 per cent for the main challenger the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA).
The MPLA, a former liberation movement, has ruled Angola since independence from Portugal in 1975.
Mercedes-Benz India Appoints Santosh Iyer as MD and CEO
Mercedes-Benz India announced the appointment of Santosh Iyer as the new Managing Director and CEO, he will be the first Indian to hold the post. He succeeds Martin Schwenk who will take up the position of President and CEO, Mercedes-Benz Thailand. Both these appointments will be effective starting next year, i.e. 1st of January 2023.
Santosh Iyer has been working at Mercedes-Benz India since 2009 and has held executive positions in a variety of departments, including sales, marketing, customer care, communications, and customer relationship management.
L&T Technology Wins 5-year Deal with BMW Group in Infotainment Sector
Engineering services firm L&T Technology Services won a five-year, multi-million-dollar deal from European luxury automaker BMW Group to provide high-end engineering services for its suite of infotainment consoles targeted for its family of hybrid vehicles.
The LTTS team of engineers will be providing services in the areas of software build and integration, infotainment validation and defect management.
The large deal was awarded to LTTS because of its deep domain expertise and engineering leadership in transportation technologies and LTTS' proven ability to offer unique opportunities to scale up existing projects and work on new ones.

IIT Madras, IIS- Karnataka Partner to Develop Boxing Analytics Software
Indian Institute of Technology Madras researchers along with Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS) in Bellary, Karnataka, are developing a cost-effective boxing analytics platform to increase India's boxing medal tally at the 2024 Olympics.
An analytics platform called 'Smartboxer,' being developed as a multi-version software by the Center of Excellence for Sports Science and Analytics at IIT Madras, will provide an above-par competitive edge to Indian athletes. It will provide feedback and performance assessments using Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled wearable sensors and video cameras.
'Smartboxer' will be deployed to analyse the boxers' performance at Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS). Based on the feedback from IIS, changes will be incorporated into the 'Smartboxer' analytics platform. This will enable the software to be effectively used to assist coaches and boxers. This will aid in solving sporting problems and designing better sports equipment.
England's James Anderson Becomes most Successful Pacer in International Cricket
England's James Anderson became the first-ever fast bowler to complete 950 wickets in international cricket. He attained this historic feat on Day 3 of the second Test against South Africa. He broke the record of Australia's Glenn McGrath (949 wickets). The most successful bowlers in international cricket are Sri Lankan spin wizard, Muttiah Muralitharan (1,347 wickets), late Aussie spin great Shane Warne (1,001 wickets) and Indian spin great Anil Kumble (956 wickets).
Anderson, who marked his international debut in 2003, now has 951 wickets across formats at an average of 27.18.
Rural Olympic Games Begin in Rajasthan
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot inaugurated month-long Rajiv Gandhi Rural Olympic Games, for which around 30 lakh villagers have registered.
Gehlot inaugurated the event along with Sports Minister Ashok Chandana and state Sports Council Chairman Krishna Poonia.
Gehlot also announced to make the games an annual event and assured to organise similar sports events in urban areas.
Gehlot termed the event the first-of-its-kind in the entire country.
President Droupadi Murmu Meets with Queen Máxima of Netherlands
Queen Máxima of the Netherlands called on President Droupadi Murmu and they discussed deepening of bilateral ties between the two countries.
The two leaders also discussed in detail several aspects of universal financial inclusion which has been one of the main agenda of the Government of India.
President Murmu said that the Government of India is committed to connect every Indian with formal banking channels through various means and to ensure that the benefits provided by the government reach the last mile and the intended beneficiary without any pilferage. Queen Máxima appreciated the progress made in India in this direction in the last few years.

Cybercrime against Women up 28% Since 2019, Karnataka's Share Highest
As per data released by the National Crime Records Bureau, the number of cybercrime incidents in 2021 went up by 18.4 per cent since 2019, but the number of such cases against women rose at a significantly steeper 28 per cent.
Of the 52,974 incidents reported in 2021, 10,730 — 20.2 per cent — were reported as cases of crime against women, the data revealed.
The top five states accounted for 61 per cent share of cybercrimes against women. Karnataka had the highest share with 2,243 cases in 2021, followed by Maharashtra with 1,697, and Uttar Pradesh with 958 cases.
Shah Faesal Appointed Deputy Secretary in Ministry of Culture
Shah Faesal, a 2010 batch IAS topper of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir cadre, now AGMUT, was appointed as the Deputy Secretary in the Union Ministry of Culture under the Central Staffing Scheme.
As per report, his appointment will be for a period of four years from the date of taking over charge of the post or until further orders.
Mikhail Gorbachev, who ended the Cold War without bloodshed but failed to prevent the collapse of the Soviet Union, died at the age of 91.
Gorbachev, the last Soviet President, forged arms reduction deals with the United States and partnerships with Western powers to remove the Iron Curtain that had divided Europe since World War Two and bring about the reunification of Germany.

Uttarakhand CM Launched 'CM Udyman Khiladi Unnayan Yojana'
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched the "Mukhyamantri Udyaman Khiladi Unnayan Yojana". The Chief Minister Sports Development Fund would be established to be given financial benefits to the students according to accelerated rules.
On this occasion, in view of the shortage of sports coaches, the Chief Minister appointed eight sports coaches in each district, established of Chief Minister's Sports Development Fund to give quick financial benefits to the players as per rules and four per cent reservation for skilled players in state services. Also announced to try to implement again.
Under the scheme:
A sports scholarship of Rs. 1500 per month will be given to budding sportspersons between the age group of eight to 14 years.
Every year a total of 3900 budding sportspersons will be given scholarships, which will include 1950 boys and 1950 girls.
NSDC Partners with Upskilling Platform Mythiksha to help Upskill People in Rural India
National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), a strategic implementation and knowledge partner in the Skill India Mission, and upskilling platform Mythiksha officially joined hands to help Mythiksha expand its reach in rural cities and promote employment opportunities for rural youth.
With NSDC, Mythiksha expects to reach over 1 lakh students over the next 12 months. At present, Mythiksha follows a 'Learn Now Pay Later' model, where candidates enroll with an admission fee and clear the course fee in easy installments after they receive a job.
University of Auckland Announces Scholarships Worth NZ$1.5 Million for Indian Students
The Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland is launching an extensive range of scholarship package for Indian students totalling almost NZ$1.5 million. Indian students who want to apply for any of the scholarships can submit their application at the official university website — auckland.ac.nz.
These scholarships are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and interested candidates can apply for these from October 10 till November 21, and then from March 9, 2023 till April 20, 2023. Scholarship applications will usually open around six weeks before the closing date.
Govt. Proposes a New Regulator for 'Uniformity' in All Board Exams
The Union government plans to draw up a "benchmark framework" to assess students at the secondary and higher secondary level to bring about "uniformity" across state and central boards which currently follow different standards of evaluation, leading to wide disparities in scores.
Over the last few months, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has held a series of meetings with the representatives of state boards and State Councils of Educational Research and Training (SCERTs) to arrive at a common understanding to implement the plan, as part of which a new assessment regulator is being set up.
The proposed regulator, PARAKH (Performance Assessment, Review and Analysis of Knowledge for Holistic Development), which will act as a constituent unit of the NCERT, will also be tasked with holding periodic learning outcome tests like the National Achievement Survey (NAS) and State Achievement Surveys.
Allahabad High Court Transfers 22 Judicial Officers in Uttar Pradesh
The Allahabad High Court has transferred 22 judicial officers in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
A notification issued by Registrar General Ashish Garg directed the judicial officers to hand over the charge of their present posts and proceed to take over charge of their new postings immediately.
It further said that handing and taking over charge certificates should be sent to Satish Kumar Pushkar, Deputy Registrar (Services), High Court, Allahabad.
The officers, who were transferred or posted on their own request, would not be entitled for any TA under Rule 42 of Chapter-IV of Financial Hand Book, Volume-III, added the notification.
High Court Cannot Direct the Authorities to Use a Particular Land for School: Gauhati High Court
The Gauhati High Court has observed that a High Court, in exercise of extraordinary jurisdiction under Article 226 of the Constitution, cannot direct the authorities to use a particular plot of land for school only.
The Division Bench of Chief Justice Rashmin Manharbhai Chhaya and Justice Soumitra Saikia disposed of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).
Considering the prayers made in the petition, the Court did not find any illegality in the construction of the building.
The Court observed that the objection which is sought to be raised by the petitioner regarding the non-suitability of the plot which is situated at Howraghat Town under Howraghat Mouza.
