Iran and Argentina applied to join the BRICS mechanism, days after a summit of the five-nation bloc during which the leaders agreed to continue to discuss the possibility of admitting new countries to the grouping on the basis of full consultation and consensus.
The issue of expansion of the BRICS bloc was figured in the virtual summit hosted by China, which is this year's (2022) chair.
Togo and Gabon Become Commonwealth Association Members
The Commonwealth of Nations now has 56 member nations after the admission of Togo and Gabon. The two historically French-speaking nations were formally admitted to the union at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, which was presided over by Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Kigali, the country's capital. According to Patricia Scotland, the organization's secretary-general, admission is determined by evaluations of a number of standards, including the democratic process, effective leadership, and rule of law.
US and Allies Launch Partners in the Blue Pacific Initiative
To reinforce its Indo-Pacific strategy, and in what is being seen as a response to China's aggressive outreach to Pacific Island states, the United States (US) - along with Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Japan - announced a new Partners in Blue Pacific (PBP) initiative.
According to the five countries, PBP was an "inclusive, informal mechanism" to support Pacific priorities, in line with the principles of "Pacific regionalism, sovereignty, transparency, accountability, and most of all, led and guided by the Pacific Islands".
The US and its allies would together, as well as individually, focus on three priority areas.
The first is delivering results for the Pacific more effectively and efficiently. The second area of focus is bolstering "Pacific regionalism". The final area of focus is expanding cooperation between the Pacific and the rest of the world.
Explorers Find WWII Navy Ship, Deepest Wreck Discovered
A U.S. Navy destroyer escort that engaged a superior Japanese fleet in the largest sea battle of World War II in the Philippines became the deepest wreck to be discovered.
The USS Samuel B. Roberts, popularly known as the "Sammy B," was identified broken into two pieces on a slope at a depth of 6,985 meters (22,916 feet).
That puts it 426 meters (1,400 feet) deeper than the USS Johnston, the previous deepest wreck discovered in 2021 in the Philippine Sea also by American explorer Victor Vescovo, founder of Dallas-based Caladan Oceanic Expeditions.
The Sammy B. took part in the Battle off Samar, the final phase of the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, in which the Imperial Japanese Navy suffered its biggest loss of ships and failed to dislodge the U.S. forces from Leyte, which they invaded earlier as part of the liberation of the Philippines.
Mukesh Ambani Resigns from Reliance Jio, Akash Ambani Named Chairman
Mukesh Ambani stepped down as director of Reliance Jio Infocomm. The telecom arm of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) said that its board approved the appointment of Akash Ambani, non-executive director of the company, as its chairman.
Mukesh Ambani will continue to be the chairman of Jio Platforms Ltd, the flagship company that owns all Jio digital services brands, including Reliance Jio Infocomm.
The board has also approved the appointment of Raminder Singh Gujral and K.V. Chowdary as Reliance Jio's additional directors, designated as independent directors, for five years.
It also approved the appointment of Pankaj Mohan Pawar as the company's managing director for five years, subject to the approval of the shareholders.
Mufin Finance Gets Prepaid Payment Instrument Licence from RBI
Mufin Finance, one of the leading NBFCs, received in-principal RBI approval for issuance of semi-closed prepaid payment instruments.
A semi-closed PPI licence allows digital banks, fintech firms and large consumer-facing applications to roll out features such as digital payment solutions for lending.
Mufin Finance is the fourth NBFC to receive such a licence from the RBI, after leading brands such as Bajaj Finserve, Manapurram and Paul Merchants.
The company is in the process of setting up building blocks for launching MufinPay, a digital payment solution which will complement its lending business.
NITI Aayog Launches Report 'India's Booming Gig and Platform Economy' on Gig Economy in India
India's gig workforce, estimated to be at 77 lakh in 2020-21, is expected to go up to 2.35 crore by 2029-30, according to a NITI Aayog report. The report, titled 'India's Booming Gig and Platform Economy' looks at the present size of the sector, its job generation potential, and also offers recommendations for the sector. As written in the Code on Social Security, the NITI Aayog report also recommended extending social security measures to gig workers and their families. The Code on Social Security was the first time gig and platform workers were recognised by the government, which sought to give workers social security benefits.
The report defines a gig worker as "someone who engages in income-earning activities outside of a traditional employer-employee relationship, as well as in the informal sector". Additionally, it defines those working with platforms such as Ola, Uber, Dunzo, Swiggy, Zomato and Urban Company as platform workers. It even goes on to term platform labour as the "Fourth Industrial Revolution".
It is important to note that while the NITI Aayog has made several recommendations and this is the first such report that the government's think tank has studied and published.
Mohammed Jalood was elected as president of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), and 11 additional new members were added to its Executive Board.
Jalood is a long time IWF official held the post of general secretary and worked closely with Al-Mana at the Asian Weightlifting Federation.
Jalood is the first permanent president since Tamás Aján stepped down in 2020 after controlling the IWF for 44 years. He faced allegations that failed drug tests were covered up and millions of dollars were unaccounted for under his presidency.
The IWF was founded in 1905, and has 192 Member Federations.
Attorney General K.K. Venugopal to Continue for 3 more Months
Attorney General K.K. Venugopal accepted the Centre's request to continue for three more months as the main legal advisor to the government.
The eminent lawyer and constitutional law expert was first appointed as Attorney General on July 1, 2017, succeeding Mukul Rohatgi, who was the Attorney General from June 2014 to June 2017. He was reappointed to the post for an approved tenure up to June 30, 2022.
Venugopal is an internationally known jurist who appeared in many landmark cases in the Supreme Court and different High Courts.
Maharashtra Government Pushes to Rename Aurangabad
With increasing pressure on the Shiv Sena from within to underscore its 'Hindu' credentials the Maharashtra government is likely to clear a controversial and long pending issue of renaming Aurangabad city as Sambhaji Nagar. Shiv Sena leader and State Transport Minister Anil Parab requested Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to rename the city in the cabinet meeting. A proposal will be brought for discussion in the next cabinet meeting.
In 2021, the Chief Minister had told the state assembly that a detailed proposal for renaming Aurangabad as Sambhaji Nagar was received from the divisional commissioner and legal opinion on the same had been sought.
Indian Coast Guard Commissions Indigenous Aircraft 'ALH Mark 3' Helicopter
In a big boost to India's maritime security, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) commissioned the indigenous advanced light helicopter (ALH) MK-III aircraft at Gujarat's Porbandar Port, a week after it was inducted in Chennai.
The ALH MK-III squadron was commissioned by ICG Director General Virender Singh Pathania at the force's air enclave on the west coast.
So far, 13 ALH MK-III aircraft have been inducted in the Indian Coast Guard in a phased manner, and four of these aircraft are positioned at Porbandar.

International Day of the Tropics
International Day of the Tropics is observed annually on June 29. The event highlights the importance of the tropics and the environmental and socio-economic challenges faced in these regions.
The James Cook University of Australia, in collaboration with 11 other research institutions, submitted the first State of the Tropics Report, launched in June 2014. The report looked at several environmental, social and economic issues to understand whether life in the tropics was improving.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) took cognisance of this report. It adopted the resolution A/RES/70/267 in June 2016, and designated June 29 as the International Day of the Tropics.
Poet Ram Darash Mishra Gets Saraswati Samman for 'Mein to Yahan Hun'
Eminent Hindi poet and litterateur Prof Ram Darash Mishra was conferred the Saraswati Samman for 2021 for his collection of poems "Mein to Yahan Hun", which covers a gamut of social issues and societal concerns.
Instituted in 1991 by KK Birla Foundation, the Saraswati Samman is one of the most prestigious literary awards in the country. It is given annually to an outstanding literary work published during the past 10 years by an Indian citizen in any language included in Schedule VIII of the Constitution. It carries a cash prize of Rs. 15 lakh, a citation, and a plaque.
Born in Dumri village in Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur district on August 15, 1924, Mishra excelled in different branches of Hindi literature. In a career spanning decades, he has to his credit 32 collections of poems, 15 novels, 30 short stories, 15 books of literary criticism, four collections of essays, travelogues, and several memoirs.

Kerala Govt. to Roll out "MEDISEP" Scheme for State Government
Kerala state government issued orders regarding the implementation of a medical insurance "MEDISEP" scheme for government employees and pensioners and the deduction of premium from the salary of June 2022 and pension of July 2022. MEDISEP scheme is applicable to government employees, pensioners/family pensioners and their eligible family members and employees and pensioners of universities that receive grant in aid from the state government and the local self-government institutions.
The scheme provides cashless medical assistance through an insurance company selected through the competitive bidding process. As per the scheme, the premium on behalf of the employees and pensioners towards MEDISEP shall be paid by the government in advance and will be recouped from the salary of employees and pensioners.
The annual premium of the employees and the pensioners will be Rs 4,800 + 18% GST for the policy period of 2022-24, and the monthly premium of Rs 500 would be deducted from the salary/pension. The scheme is applicable to universities and local self-government institutions as well.
Rajasthan's Sikar Highest Performing District in School Education across India, Reveals MoE Grading Index
According to the Union Ministry of Education's Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D), Rajasthan's Sikar was the highest performing district in school education followed by Jhunjhunu and Jaipur. The three districts figured in the 'Utkarsh' category (scoring 81-90 per cent on a scale of 100) with Junjhunu scoring the maximum (236 out of 290) in learning outcomes.
Also, in the second grade 'Ati-uttam', Rajasthan was significantly ahead of the second and third top states having 24 of its districts in this category.
The other states whose districts performed best in the latest index released by the Ministry of Education (MoE) on Monday are Punjab with 14 districts in 'Ati-uttam' grade (scoring 71-80 per cent on a scale of 100) followed by Gujarat and Kerala with each having 13 districts in this category.
A Book Titled, 'The Life and Times of George Fernandes' by Rahul Ramagundam
A new biography of one of India's most firebrand union leaders and former Central minister George Fernandes will trace his journey from the streets of Bombay to the corridors of power in Delhi, announced the Penguin Random House India (PRHI). "The Life and Times of George Fernandes", written by Rahul Ramagundam, will be released under Penguin's 'Allen Lane' imprint on July 25.
Fernandes, born on June 3, 1930, in Mangalore to a Christian family, burst into national limelight when as a trade unionist in Mumbai he organised a Railways strike in 1974 that brought the country to a standstill. Fernandes died in January 2019 at the age of 88 after a prolonged illness.
He became the Railways Minister in 1989 under V. P. Singh's National Front coalition government, comprising mostly Left-leaning parties.
Fernandes emerged as a key figure in the fight to restore democracy after the Emergency was imposed in 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
SC Hears Pleas against "Extra Legal" Demolitions after Protests in Kanpur and Prayagraj
The Supreme Court heard the pleas against the "extra-legal" demolition of buildings linked to the accused involved in violent protests in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur and Prayagraj over objectionable remarks made by now sacked two BJP functionaries on Prophet Mohammed.
A vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and J. B. Pardiwala heard the petitions filed by the Muslim body Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind.
The Jamiat had earlier filed another plea on the issue of demolition of buildings and other allegedly illegal structures in Jahangirpuri in the national capital.
The Uttar Pradesh government told the Supreme Court in an affidavit that the demolitions were undertaken in accordance with the law and the exercise was in no way meant to punish the accused for their involvement in violent protests following the remarks made by the BJP leaders against the Prophet.
