G7 Leaders Unveil $600-bn Plan to Rival China's BRI in Developing Nations
US President Joe Biden and other G7 leaders unveiled ambitious plans to mobilise USD 600 billion in funding by 2027 to deliver transparent and game-changing infrastructure projects in developing countries like India, in a move seen as a counter to China's Belt and Road Initiative.
The Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) unveiled during the G7 Summit relaunches a scheme unveiled at the G7 talks in England in 2021.
Buhari Appoints Replacement Chief Justice
Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari sworn in the most senior judge at the country's Supreme Court – Justice Olukayode Ariwoola – as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.
This followed the resignation of Chief Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad due to ill health, and amid allegations from fellow judges of corruption, nepotism and neglect of welfare.
He is expected to hold the post until the President appoints a permanent Chief Justice which needs the approval of the Nigerian senate.
The Chief Justice is the head of the Supreme Court and the highest judicial officer in Nigeria.
Russia Defaults on Foreign-currency Sovereign Debt for 1st Time since 1918
Russia is believed to have defaulted on its debt for the first time since 1998 after missing a key deadline.
Russia has the money to make a $100m payment, which was due June 26, but sanctions made it impossible to get the sum to international creditors.
The country was determined to avoid the default, which is a major blow to the nation's prestige.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, said that the statements of a default were absolutely unjustified.
He added that an intermediary bank had withheld the money and that the reserves were blocked "unlawfully".
Utricularia Furcellata: Rare Carnivorous Plant Found for First Time in Western Himalayan Region
A very rare carnivorous plant species called Utricularia Furcellata was found in the western Himalayan region for the first time.
The detection of the rare species was made by a research team of the Uttarakhand Forest Department in the picturesque Mandal valley located in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand.
It is the first sighting of the plant not only in Uttarakhand but in the entire western Himalayan region.
Carnivorous plants which generally grow on poor nutrient soil have aroused new interest in the scientific community across the world because of their potential medicinal benefits.
RBI Extends Card Tokenisation Deadline by 3 Months
The Reserve Bank of India extended the card-on-file (CoF) tokenisation deadline by three months to September 30, 2022, in view of various representations received from industry bodies.
Card-on-file, or CoF, refers to card information stored by payment gateway and merchants to process future transactions. Tokenisation is the process of replacing actual card details with a unique alternate code called 'Token' - thereby enabling more secure transactions.
The RBI now directed the merchants to implement its tokenisation norms by September 30, 2022. This is the third time that the central bank has extended the deadline of its implementation.
Punjab Budget; No New Taxes; 300 Units of Free Power
With no new taxes imposed, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema presented the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's maiden budget for 2022-23 fiscal, with a total outlay of Rs. 1,55,859.78 crore and a revenue deficit of Rs. 12,553.80 crore.
While the government has not been able to fulfill its pre-poll promise of giving away Rs 1,000 per month to women in its maiden budget for want of funds, it has announced 75 Mohalla Clinics to be functional from August 15 and has set aside Rs. 1,800 crore for 300 units of free power to be rolled out to people from July 1 onwards.
The budget had a stamp of Delhi model of AAP, and Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia was a witness to the presentation as he sat in the visitor's gallery of the Punjab assembly. On the fiscal health front, the state finances are in a mess. Cheema blamed the previous governments for the mess as he said that the debt on the state was burgeoning and it was projected to go up to Rs. 2.84 crore by the end of this fiscal.This was for the first time that Punjab presented a paperless budget.
Nitin Gupta is New Chairman of CBDT
IRS officer Nitin Gupta was appointed as the new CBDT chairman.
Gupta, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the 1986 batch of the Income Tax cadre, is serving as the Member (investigation) in the Board and is scheduled to retire in September 2023.
The post of the CBDT chief was being held in an additional capacity by Board member and 1986-batch IRS officer Sangeeta Singh after J. B. Mohapatra retired on April 30.
The CBDT is headed by a Chairman and can have six members who are in the rank of special secretary.
Bengaluru's Digantara, Hyderabad Start-up Dhruva Become First to Get IN-SPACe Authorisation
The Indian Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) authorised two Indian private firms, marking the beginning of private space sector launches in the country.
Hyderabad's Dhruva Space Pvt Ltd and Bengaluru's Digantara research & technologies Pvt Ltd were authorised by IN-SPACe to launch their payloads.
Dhruva Space's Dhruva Space Satellite Orbital Deployer – (DSOD 1U), a technology demonstration payload, and Digantara's ROBust Integrating Proton Fluence Meter (ROBI), a Proton dosimeter payload, were authorised, an IN-SPACe statement.
The payloads would fly onboard PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) of PSLV-C53 scheduled to be launched on June 30.
"The first two launch authorisations issued by IN-SPACe is an important milestone and marks the beginning of private space sector launches in India.
NASA Delays Launch of CAPSTONE Mission to Moon
US space agency NASA delayed the scheduled launch of the CAPSTONE mission to the Moon over systems checks.
The Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE) is a microwave oven-sized CubeSat weighing just 55 pounds. It will serve as the first spacecraft to test a unique, elliptical lunar orbit.
CAPSTONE will fly in cislunar space - the orbital space near and around the Moon. The mission will demonstrate an innovative spacecraft-to-spacecraft navigation solution at the Moon from a near rectilinear halo orbit slated for Artemis' Gateway.
Once released from Rocket Lab's Photon satellite bus, CAPSTONE will use its propulsion system to travel for approximately three months before entering into orbit around the Moon.
After arrival at the Moon, CAPSTONE will begin its 6-month-long primary mission.
Dhanalakshmi Becomes Third Fastest Indian Woman in 200m
Ace sprinter Sekar Dhanalakshmi ran her personal best time to win 200m gold at the Qosanov Memorial Athletics Meet while the likes of shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor and javelin thrower Rohit Yadav returned to India without competing in the event.
Dhanalakshmi ran a creditable sub-23 second, clocking 22.89s to better her earlier personal best of 23.14s she had come up last year.
She had won a 200m gold in the national Inter-State Championships in Chennai earlier this month with a time of 23.27s.
Dhanalakshmi is only the third Indian woman to run sub-23s after national record holder Saraswati Saha (22.82s) and Hima Das (22.88s).
National Kite Boarding Championship Held in Tuticorin
The third edition of the National Kite Boarding Championship was held in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu under the aegis of Yachting Association of India (YAI) which is the National Federation for the sport of Sailing in India and Premier Kite Boarding Association, the National body representing Kite Boarding in India.
The three day event was hosted by Aqua Outback, Tuticorin and organised by Tamil Nadu Sailing Association and Chennai Sailing Academy.
The Regatta was governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing. Kite Boarding will be making its debut in Olympics at Paris 2024.
England Captain Morgan to Announce Retirement from International Cricket
England's World Cup-winning white-ball captain Eoin Morgan is set to announce his retirement from international cricket, ending a career in which he played more than 300 times across 50-over and Twenty20 formats.
Morgan, who led England to 50-over World Cup glory in 2019, captained England in a record 126 ODIs and 72 T20s. His 118 wins as skipper across the two formats is also a record.
Morgan made his ODI debut with Ireland in 2006 before he was called up by England in 2009, has played 248 ODIs and 115 T20Is, scoring 10,159 runs in total. He has also played in 16 tests, scoring 700 runs.
Mukul Roy Resigns as Public Accounts Committee Chairman in WB Assembly
Senior TMC leader and MLA Mukul Roy submitted his resignation as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee in West Bengal Assembly to Speaker Biman Banerjee saying that his tenure was about to end.
Roy, who won the 2021 assembly polls on a BJP ticket from Krishnanagar Uttar constituency in Nadia district, had defected to the ruling Trinamool Congress a month later in June 2021. He did not, however, resign as a legislator despite being asked to do so by the saffron party.
Bharat Electronics Signs MoU with Belarus Firm for the Supply of Airborne Defense Suite
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Defense Initiatives (DI), Belarus, and Defense Initiatives Aero Pvt Ltd, India (a subsidiary of DI Belarus) to build cooperation amongst the three companies for the supply of Airborne Defense Suite (ADS) for Indian Air Force's helicopters.
ADS is used for providing protection to helicopters. BEL will be the prime contractor and will be supported by DI with manufacturing and maintenance for the supply of advanced Electronic Warfare (EW) suites for helicopters under the 'Make in India' category.
The MoU also aims to explore various business opportunities for India and global markets for ADS. The partnership evolved under the guidance of Sanjay Jaju, Additional Secretary, Department of Defence Production, and Indo Belarusian Joint Commission (IBJC) on Military Cooperation.
A Noted Lyricist, Chowalloor Krishnankutty Passed Away
In Kerala, noted lyricist, author and journalist, Chowalloor Krishnankutty passed away at the age of 86.
A former Staff Artist with AIR, Krishnankutty penned over 3000 devotional songs and authored more than 200 books. He retired as an Assistant Editor with the Malayala Manorama daily.
He won several awards including the Kerala Sahithya Academy Award for satire, Poonthanam Jnanapana and Revathy Pattathanam Awards among others.
Chowalloor Krishanankutty also made his mark as a screen writer in Malayalam movies and produced documentaries on some well-known Kathakali artists. He also served as the Vice-Chairman of the Kerala Kalamandalam.

Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa was conferred with the prestigious King Abdulaziz Medal for his contributions to defence cooperation between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
During his official visit to the kingdom, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman conferred General Bajwa with the King Abdulaziz Medal of Excellent Class for his "distinguished efforts in consolidating and strengthening bonds of friendship and joint cooperation and developing Saudi-Pakistani relations".
Both sides agreed upon enhancing defence cooperation in the fields of joint training, air defence, counter-terrorism and communication and information domain.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, M.K. Stalin launched a special programme for class 12 students titled 'College Dream'.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) joined hands with UNICEF and YuWaah to work together on life skills development, career guidance, as well as enabling access and engagement of students in volunteering opportunities.
Through this partnership, the organisations will now roll-out the Passport to Earning (P2E) initiative for CBSE students, wherein they will be upskilled with key 21st century skills mapped to CBSE's employability skills curriculum. On the basis of this pilot run, the initiative will then be extended to students all over the country, in addition to teacher training and capacity building to enable the same.
This initiative has been launched in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) and CBSE's ongoing initiative of Handbook on 21st Century Skills and Employability Skills coursework. Experts wish to move away from rote learning and promote the importance of skills in students.

SC Hears Centre's Plea against Tripura HC Order on Security Cover to Ambanis
The Supreme Court agreed to hear a plea by the Central Government against the Tripura High Court directive summoning Union Home Ministry officers in a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the security cover provided to industrialist and Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani and his family.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and J. B. Pardiwala agreed to the Centre's request to list the appeal against the interim order of the Tripura High Court urgently, after Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta informed the Bench that the HC had directed that officer from the Home Ministry be present with the documents related to the threat perception and that no further adjournment will be given.
The Solicitor General pointed out that the security cover is provided by Maharashtra government based upon Central Government's perception. "It is a Central security. The Tripura government has nothing to do. It's completely territorially barred. And in any case, individual security of one family — the Ambanis — can't be a subject matter of PIL.
