PM Modi to Visit Germany for G7 Summit

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Germany on June 26 and 27 to attend the annual summit of G7, which is likely to be attended by US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau among others.
  • From Germany, Modi will travel to the UAE on June 28 to pay his condolences on the passing away of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the former President of the Gulf nation.

Crisis-hit Sri Lanka Plans Donor Conference with China, India and Japan

  • Sri Lanka called China, India and Japan to a donor conference to drum up more foreign assistance and present an interim budget in August, amid ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
  • The island nation of 22 million people is struggling with its worst economic crisis in seven decades, unable to import essentials including food, fuel and medicines because of a severe shortage of foreign exchange.
  • A high-level delegation from India led by Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran will go to Sri Lanka for talks on additional support from New Delhi, and a team from the U.S. Treasury will visit next week.

The 16th ASEAN Defence Minister's Meeting Kicks Off

  • The 16th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) kicked off, with discussions focusing on key challenges and security in the region.
  • Chaired by Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Tea Banh, the meeting brought together defence ministers or representatives from all ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states.
  • This was the first in-person meeting in over two years following the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Government Gears Up for Single-Use Plastic Items Ban by June End

  • The Central Pollution Control Board undertook comprehensive measures to give effect to India's commitment to ban identified single use plastic items by 30th June 2022, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change said.
  • Plastic items that will be banned from the beginning of July 2022 include ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decoration, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns and stirrers.

AU Small Finance Bank Launches Credit Card that Lets Customers Choose Features

  • India's largest small finance bank and one of the fastest-growing retail banks, launched a customisable credit card, in which cardholders can choose the features they want and for the time period they want.
  • This type of offering is for the first time in the industry, claimed the bank.
  • While credit card companies offer attractive products in different categories, it is often difficult for customers to find the combination of all such features in one single card. This forces them to opt for multiple credit cards offering specific category rewards.
  • However, with the AU Bank 'LIT' (Live-It-Today) Credit Card, the bank has put the power to choose these features in the hands of the customers – all categories in one card. Further, they also get the freedom to switch on or off these features as per their changing lifestyle requirements.

South Korea: Launches First Domestically Built Space Rocket

  • South Korea launched its first domestically built space rocket in the country's second attempt, months after its earlier liftoff failed to place a payload into orbit.
  • A successful launch would boost South Korea's growing space ambitions but also prove it has key technologies to build a space-based surveillance system and bigger missiles amid animosities with rival North Korea.
  • The three-stage Nuri rocket carrying what officials called a functioning "performance verification" satellite blasted from South Korea's only space launch centre on a small island off its southern coast.
  • In the first attempt in October 2021, the rocket's dummy payload reached its desired altitude of 700 km (435 miles) but didn't enter orbit because the engine of the rocket's third stage burned out earlier than planned.

England's Matt Fitzpatrick Wins 2022 United States Open Championship in Boston

  • Matt Fitzpatrick conquered The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, to win the US Open, the first major victory of his career.
  • Matt had won seven times on the European Tour, but had yet to win a professional event held on US soil.
  • Entering the final round, Fitzpatrick was tied atop the leaderboard with Will Zalatoris.

Indian Women's Wrestling Team Wins U-17 Asian Championship, Kyrgyzstan

  • Indian women's wrestling team won five medals to claim Under-17 Asian Championship title with a total of eight gold at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. India lifted the title with a total of 235 points from eight gold, one silver and one bronze. Japan had to be content with the runners-up trophy with 143 points and Mongolia finished third with 138 points.
  • Bouts in 5 weight categories of women wrestling were held. Indian women including Ritika won gold in 43 kilogram, Ahilaya Shinde got gold in 49 kilogram, Siksha lifted gold medal in 57 kilogram, Priya received gold in 73 kilogram while Pulkit secured a Silver medal in 65 kilogram. In addition, the competitions in three weight categories of Free Style were also held and Parwinder Singh won Gold in 80 kilogram while Narender secured Silver in 71 kilogram.

Ration Card Portability Implemented across India with Assam Being Last to Operationalise

  • The government's 'One Nation, One Ration Card' (ONORC) programme was successfully implemented across the country, with Assam being the last state to operationalise the service. Under ONORC, beneficiaries covered under the National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA) can get their quota of subsidised foodgrains from any electronic point of sale device (ePoS)-enabled fair price shops of their choice by using their existing ration cards with biometric authentication.
  • According to the Food Ministry, ration card portability has significantly contributed in ensuring subsidised foodgrains to NFSA beneficiaries, especially migrant beneficiaries, during the last two years of Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Currently, a monthly average of about 3 crore portable transactions are being recorded, delivering the subsidised NFSA and free PMGKAY (Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana) foodgrains with anywhere flexibility to the beneficiaries.

R. Kavita Rao Appointed as Director of NIPFP

  • Eminent economist R. Kavita Rao took charge as the director of National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) for a five-year term.
  • Rao replaced Pinaki Chakraborty.
  • Rao was working as a professor at NIPFP. She holds a Masters in Economics degree from Delhi School of Economics and a PhD from Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Calcutta.

Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Heading Towards Dissolution

  • Amid the intensifying political crisis in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut hinted at the dissolution of the State Legislative Assembly.
  • Back-to-back meetings of Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP are taking place in Mumbai over the rapidly changing political developments in the state.
  • This came after 40 Maharashtra MLAs including 33 Shiv Sena and seven independent MLAs exhorted their support to rebel Shiv Sena leader and state Cabinet Minister Eknath Shinde by signing a letter.

International Olympic Day

  • International Olympic Day or World Olympic Day is observed every year on June 23 and it's a celebration of sport, health, and being together. The day provides a moment for everyone to gather and get active with purpose.
  • The idea of celebrating an Olympic Day was adopted at the 42nd IOC Session in St Moritz. It was in 1948 that doctor Gruss, a Czech IOC member, presented the idea of a world Olympic day at the 41st Session of the International Olympic Committee in Stockholm, Sweden. The purpose was to celebrate the idea of the Olympic Movement.
  • The theme for International Olympic Day 2022 was 'Together, For a Peaceful World', accompanied by the social media hashtags #MoveForPeace and #OlympicDay. The World Olympic Day 2022 focused on the power that sport has to build a better world, by bringing people together in peace.

United Nations Public Service Day

  • With the aim to appreciate the value of public institutions and public servants, June 23 is observed as United Nations Public Service Day. It highlights the contribution and role of public service in the development of all sectors around the world. While acknowledging the work done by the public servants and their sheer dedication towards effective and responsive public administration, the United Nations Public Service Day also encourages youth to pursue their careers in the public sector on this day.
  • In a bid to encourage the same, the United Nations (UN) conducts a Public Service Awards ceremony every year to honour the contributions of public service institutions around the world.
  • As per the UN, this year's Public Service Day focused on the role of the public institutions and the public servants in building back better from the coronavirus pandemic. This will be done while keeping the 2030 deadline for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals in focus.

International Widows Day

  • International Widow Day is observed every year on 23rd June.
  • International Widows Day was introduced by the United Nations in 2011 to highlight the voices of widows. The day is meant to take action for the complete rights and recognition of widows. Notably, before the United Nations, the day was observed by the Loomba Foundation in 2005. The foundation chose June 23 to mark International Widows Day as on this day in 1954, founder Rajinder Paul Loomba's mother Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba became a widow.

Prime Minister's Award for Outstanding Contribution for Promotion of Yoga

  • On the occasion of International Yoga Day, the AYUSH Ministry announced to give the 'Prime Minister's Award for Outstanding Contribution towards the Development and Promotion of Yoga' for 2022 to two individuals and two organisations in recognition of their contributions in the space.
  • Two individuals Bhikkhu Sanghasena from Ladakh, Marcus Vinicius Rojo Rodrigues from Brazil and two organisations, "The Divine Life Society" from Uttarakhand and the British Wheel of Yoga from United Kingdom were chosen for award. They also received Rs. 25 lakh as cash prize, a trophy and a certificate.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced these awards on the second International Yoga Day to felicitate individuals and organisations who have made a significant impact on society for a sustained time period through the promotion and development of yoga.
  • The selection of the awardees was made after a two-stage process that reviewed the contributions made by institutions and individuals that were shortlisted. The selections were done under four categories – international individual, international organisation, national individual and national organisation.

CUET UG Exam 2022 Dates Announced

  • The Common Universities Entrance Test (CUET UG 2022) exam dates were announced. The CUET UG 2022 exam will be held on July 15, July 16, July 19, July 20, August 4, August 5, August 6, August 7, August 8, and August 10. The CUET UG 2022 will be conducted in 554 cities across India and 13 cities outside India. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will also reopen the CUET 2022 UG application window. Candidates can apply online for CUET UG and make corrections to the application form between June 23 and June 24.
  • Candidates can appear for CUET in any of the 13 mediums being offered, select any combination out of 33 languages and 27 unique subjects.

Supreme Court Rejects Plea on Petition to Sack Satyendar Jain and Nawab Malik

  • The Supreme Court refused an early hearing on a petition to sack jailed Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain and Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Nawab Malik. A bench of Justices C.T. Ravikumar and Sudhanshu Dhulia said that such matters need to be posted before Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana, then only it will be posted.
  • A PIL was filed in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Delhi government to sack its Health Minister Satyendar Jain and to the Maharashtra government to sack its Cabinet Minister Nawab Malik, in connection with the money laundering cases that are being investigated against them.

Madhya Pradesh HC Dismisses Plea for Uniform Civil Code

  • The Madhya Pradesh High Court dismissed a petition filed seeking directions to the respondent to make uniform law for all citizens of the country/state.
  • The Petition filed by Dr. Mumtaj Ahmed Khan sought the following:
  • 1) To direct respondent to make uniform law for all citizens of country/state, 2) To direct respondents to act in furtherance of the directions issued by courts time to time keeping in view Article 141 of the Constitution of India and 3) To pass any writ/order/or direction in the given or changed circumstances of the case in the interest of justice.
  • The plea of the petitioner is that a uniform law be enacted to bring about a Uniform Civil Code for all citizens of India.
