Summit of the Americas 2022

  • The ninth Summit of the Americas 2022 was held from June 6 to June 10, 2022. It is an international conference and was held in Los Angeles, United States.
  • Summit of the Americas 2022 was held under the theme of "Building a Sustainable, Resilient, and Equitable Future".
  • In January 2022, the White House had announced that, Los Angeles would serve as the host city. United States selects the site of this summit as a host and its attendees. For this year's summit, United States did not invite Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela because these countries are accused of having undemocratically elected leaders.
  • Summit of the Americas 2022 was skipped by the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
  • The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, also boycotted the summit.
  • Similarly, the President of Bolivia, President of Guatemala, Prime Minister of Saint Vincent did not attend the summit.

Five Countries Elected as Non-permanent Members of 15-nation U.N. Security Council

  • Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland were elected to the UN Security Council as non-permanent members for the 2023-2024 term and would replace India, Ireland, Kenya, Mexico and Norway at the horse-shoe table from January 1 next year.
  • The 193-member UN General Assembly held elections to elect the five non-permanent members for the two-year term 2023-24.
  • For two seats in the Western Europe and other States category, Switzerland (187 votes) and Malta (185 votes) were elected, for two seats in African and Asia-Pacific States Mozambique (192 votes) and Japan (184 votes) were elected and for the one seat in the Latin American and Caribbean States category, Ecuador was elected with 190 votes.
  • Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland will join Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana, and the UAE as well as the five permanent members China, France, Russia, the UK and the US as UNSC members for the year 2023.

Indian Diplomat Amandeep Singh Gill Appointed as UN Chief's Envoy on Technology

  • Amandeep Singh Gill of India was appointed as United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' Envoy on Technology. A thought leader on digital technology, Gill is the Chief Executive Officer of the International Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence Research Collaborative (I-DAIR) project, based at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva.
  • He brings to the position a deep knowledge of digital technologies coupled with a solid understanding of how to leverage the digital transformation responsibly and inclusively for progress on the sustainable development goals.
  • Amandeep Singh Gill was the Executive Director and Co-Lead of the United Nations Secretary-General`s High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation from 2018 to 2019.

ICICI Bank Partners with ZestMoney to Expand 'Cardless EMI' Facility

  • ICICI Bank partnered with digital EMI/pay-later platform ZestMoney, to expand its 'Cardless EMI' facility for purchases on retail and e-commerce platforms. The partnership enhances affordability of customers of the Bank who can use pre-approved cardless credit to instantly buy products/ services using ZestMoney and take care of the cost into Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs).
  • The facility, in partnership with ZestMoney, is live on select e-commerce websites and will soon be available at retail stores.
  • With this partnership, the Bank's customers will be able to use ZestMoney's wide merchant base. They will also be able to use ZestMoney's flagship 'Pay-in-3' offering, where they can split the bill into three EMIs without extra cost.

Third Major Exit at BharatPe as Founding Member Satyam Nathani Quits

  • Payments and lending fintech BharatPe's founding member Satyam Nathani resigned from the company.
  • Satyam Nathani, an IIT Delhi graduate, was a part of founding members of the company and the backbone of the tech team ,including the company's services like pay later product PostPe and peer-to-peer lending product 12% Club.
  • Nathani was set to play an important role in Unity Small Finance Bank, a joint venture between BharatPe and Centrum Financial Services, in which BharatPe has a minority stake.
  • This is the third big exit from the company as chief revenue officer Nishit Sharma and head of institutional debt partnerships Chandrima Dhar, both resigned citing personal reason.

RBI Approves Former IOB Chief Subramaniakumar as CEO of RBL Bank

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved R Subramaniakumar's appointment as the MD & CEO of RBL Bank.
  • Subramaniakumar is a former managing director and chief executive director of state-run Indian Overseas Bank, retiring on June 30, 2019. He was appointed the administrator of Dewan Housing Finance Co Ltd after the mortgage financier's board was superseded.Subramaniakumar was appointed at RBL for three years from the date of taking charge.
  • A banker with 40 years of experience, Subramaniakumar started his career with Punjab National Bank. He headed business transformation at PNB for 3 years and transformed several businesses including digital, human resource, MSME, retail, among others.

PM Opens HQ of IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre) in Ahmedabad

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the headquarters of the Indian National Center for Space Promotion and Authorization (IN-SPACe) in Ahmedabad. The PM was accompanied by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the event.
  • The project was approved by the Union Cabinet in June 2020.
  • IN-SPACe would be the nodal agency, which would allow space activities and non-government private entities to use the Department of Space related facilities. Its aim is to ensure maximum private participation for the space sector.

Pi Calculated to 100 Trillion Digits by Google Cloud Employee

  • Tech giant Google's Cloud developer advocate Emma Haruka Iwao beat her own record set three years ago for the number of digits calculated for pi. In 2019, she was able to calculate pi to its 31.4 trillionth digit, and now, using the same Google Cloud y-cruncher programme Iwao was able to find pi to its 100 trillionth digit, which is zero, reports The Verge. After starting the process in October 2021, it took the computers until March 2022 to finish. At 157 days, compared to 121 days spent figuring out a shorter number in 2019, it was going more than twice as fast.
  • According to Iwao, she was using the same tools and techniques, but the enhanced speed is due to how the parts of Google Cloud have improved since then with 100Gbps networking, balanced Persistent Disks, and other features detailed in this deep dive into the calculations.

Max Verstappen Wins Azerbaijan GP

  • Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the Azerbaijan Formula One Grand Prix to extend his Formula One championship lead over Ferrari's Charles Leclerc. Max Verstappen had one of the best races in his season, finishing on the podium after starting from number three. In the process, Verstappen became the most successful driver in the Red Bull of all time. The 24-year-old now has 66 podiums for Red Bull and is tied ninth for the most race wins alongside Jim Clark and Niki Lauda.
  • Vettel finished sixth, despite a trip down an escape road. He had tried to pass Esteban Ocon's Alpine at Turn 3 early on but overshot the corner and had to spin turn, dropping to 12th. It took him over 10 laps to catch and pass Ocon properly but, in the long run, his misadventure only cost him one place to Hamilton.

  • DIPAM took the initiative of educating and empowering people in 75 cities across India about investments and creating wealth as well as on the steps taken by the government for ensuring financial growth of her citizens.
  • The Conference programme included live Inaugural Addresses by Hon'ble Finance Minister and Hon'ble Minister of State (Finance), followed by a session at the local venue in 75 cities with eminent speakers comprising of financial Experts/ Professionals/ Bankers/ Influencers etc.

Telangana CM K Chandrashekhar Rao Gears up for 2024 Lok Sabha Polls, to Launch National Party

  • Ahead of the election for the next President of India, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao is all set to launch a national party this month. The name of the new political party is likely to be `Bharatiya Rastra Samiti`. KCR had met several opposition leaders, and the move is seen as a longer stride to gather opposition leaders just ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
  • According to reports, Telangana NRIs from across the world unanimously adopted a resolution in support of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao`s decision to foray into national politics.Telangana NRIs coordinator B Ganesh moved a resolution seeking the support of NRIs to TRS Supremo and KCR`s move to enter into national politics in a Zoom meeting attended by NRIs from different countries.

Ex-registrar of MSU, N. J. Ojha Appointed as MGNREGA Ombudsman

  • Ex-registrar of MSU, N. J. Ojha was appointed as ombudsman under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) for a 2-year term. An ombudsman has the power to receive complaints from MGNREGA workers, consider such complaints, pass awards within 30 days from the date of receipt of complaint and issue direction for conducting spot investigation and also initiate proceedings 'suo motu' if there are any grievance including on issues related to delayed payment of wages or non-payment of unemployment allowance. The ombudsman must report his award to the district programme coordinator of the district and secretary of state nodal department. If the need arises, he can mark a copy to the chief secretary.
  • MGNREGA was launched in 2005 to augment employment generation and social security in India. It is a demand-driven wage employment scheme under Ministry of Rural Development.

Painter-author Ravi Paranjape Dies in Pune

  • Renowned painter-author Ravi Paranjape died at a private hospital in Pune. He was 86. Paranjape also worked in the fields of architecture, publishing and advertising. Born on October 8, 1935, in Belgaum in Karnataka, Paranjape received numerous awards for his artistic and literary accomplishments, and also authored several books and articles on art as well as political and social reforms based on his theory of design-based culture.
  • Paranjape was perhaps best known for being an illustrator and commercial artist that led him to work with major brands and advertising agencies, as well as with architects and designers in rendering various structures and spaces. He also made his name as a painter, hosting many successful exhibitions, and later establishing his own foundation and art gallery to host his own exhibitions and those of other artists.

International Albinism Awareness Day

  • The International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD), annually observed on June 13, represents the importance and celebration of human rights of people with albinism.
  • Albinism is a non-contagious, genetically inherited ailment that results in the lack of melanin in the skin, eyes, and hair. Due to this, people with albinism are prone to many issues both social and biological. People subject to this drastic difference in pigmentation are prone to skin cancer. Due to the lack of melanin in the eyes, many people often have a permanent visual impairment. The theme for the International Albinism Awareness Day this year is "United in making our voice heard." The theme is chosen in an effort to amplify the voices, and highlight the work being done, of and for, the people with albinism. The theme will also support a sense of unity in the community and highlight the celebration of different versions of lives people with albinism live.

Second Edition of the DSDP Excellence Awards Held in New Delhi

  • The 2nd edition of the Awards for Excellence in District Skill Development Planning, DSDP, was held in New Delhi, with the top 30 districts in the area being recognised for their unique best practises in skill development. The top three districts in the competition were Rajkot in Gujarat, Cachar in Assam, and Satara in Maharashtra. District Collectors, District Magistrates, and other officials from 30 states attended the award ceremony to share their views and experiences, as well as to exhibit the skill development work that respective districts had done at the grassroots level.
  • Speaking on the occasion, Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan asked the District Collectors, District Magistrates and other officials to carry out demand-mapping of the skilled workforce and drive awareness about skill development initiatives at the local level.

Rashtriya Puruskar Portal

  • Several Ministries or Departments or Agencies of Government of India instituted various civilian awards, for recognising people who have made exceptional contribution and excelled in their fields.
  • A common 'Rashtriya Puruskar Portal' was developed by Government, to invite nominations for various awards, in order to bring all the Awards of different Ministries or Departments or Agencies under one digital platform. This portal will help in ensuring transparency and public partnership (Jan Bhagidari).
  • The Rashtriya Puruskar Portal was created with the aim of facilitating citizens to nominate individuals or organisations for various Awards constituted by Government of India.

PGI's Resource Centre for Tobacco Control, Chandigarh Awarded by WHO

  • The World Health Organisation awarded the Resource Centre for Tobacco Control (e-RCTC) of the Department of Community Medicine and School of Public Health at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh with the Regional Director Special Recognition Award. The Resource Centre for Tobacco Control provides information related to tobacco control in India, including circulars and orders, policies and legislations, multidisciplinary publications.
  • Besides being a resource hub, the centre achieved heights in capacity building by organising more than 50 workshops and webinars for around 3,500 program managers and academicians. The Resource Center for Tobacco Control, a joint initiative of the PGIMER and the UNION-SEA, was set up in 2018 by 25 organisations working over tobacco control in India with an aim to showcase tobacco control initiatives.

India's First COVID-19 Vaccine for Animals 'Anocovax'

  • Agriculture Minister, Narendra Singh Tomar launched the country's first homegrown COVID-19 vaccine "Anocovax" for animals, developed by Haryana-based ICAR-National Research Centre on Equines (NRC). Anocovax is an inactivated SARS-CoV-2 Delta (COVID-19) vaccine for animals. The immunity induced by Anocovax neutralises both Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2.
  • The COVID-19 vaccine for animals, Anocovax, is effective and capable of neutralising both Delta and Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2.
  • The Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar also launched 'CAN-CoV-2 ELISA kit', an antibody detection kit against SARS-CoV-2 for animals.
  • It is a sensitive and specific nucleocapsid protein-based indirect ELISA kit.
  • The antibody detection kit has also been indigenously developed in India and a patent has been filed for it.

Indian Students Leaving Ukraine will be Accepted by Russian Varsities

  • Indian students who had to leave studies midway as they fled the Russia-Ukraine conflict will be offered admission in Russian universities without them losing out on their previous academic years, Roman Babushkin, Deputy Chief of Mission of Russian Embassy in New Delhi, said.
  • Babushkin said that the students would be admitted to Russian universities where they can continue with their respective courses from where they were left off without losing out on the previous years of study.
  • The statement came in response to queries by reporters on the fate of the over 20,000 students who fled Ukraine after Russia invaded that country in February this year.

Union Minister Sitharaman Inaugurates National Museum of Customs and GST

  • Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the National Museum of Customs and GST "Dharohar" in Goa as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav Iconic week of the Ministry of Finance. The dedication ceremony was performed in a unique manner, with the Finance Minister removing the golden sand from single piece of rock art installed at the centuries-old heritage building in which the museum is housed. The two-storey 'Blue building', which was earlier known as Alfandega, during the period of Portuguese rule in Goa, has been standing on the banks of the Mandovi River in Panaji for more than 400 years.
  • Dharohar is one of its kind museum in the country that showcases not only the artefacts seized by Indian Customs but also depicts various aspects of work performed by the Customs Department while safeguarding the economic frontiers of the country, its heritage, flora & fauna and the society.

Delhi High Court Appoints Former Justice Pankaj Naqvi as Administrator to Handle Affairs of Judo Federation of India

  • The Delhi High Court appointed retired Allahabad High Court judge Justice Pankaj Naqvi as the Administrator of the Judo Federation of India to run the affairs of the sports body. Justice Yashwant Varma asked the former judge to undertake a review of the existing constitution of the Federation upon taking charge and prepare a draft amended constitution in conformity with the National Sports Code after eliciting the views of its constituents and members and place the finalised version of the same before the court for its approval and consideration.
  • The court's order was passed on a batch of writ petitions by the Haryana State Judo Association, Karnataka Judo Association, and Bombay Judo Association concerning certain disputes in the Judo Federation of India amongst its office bearers.
