European Parliament Votes to Ban Sale of New Petrol and Diesel Cars by 2035

  • Members of the European Parliament voted to ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035. The move aims to step up the fight against climate change through the faster development of electric vehicles. The voting was held on an amendment that would have allowed some auto emissions from new vehicles after 2035, which was rejected by Members of Parliament.
  • The European Union assembly voted in Strasbourg, France to require automakers to cut carbon-dioxide emissions by 100 percent by the middle of the next decade. The mandate would amount to a prohibition on the sale in the 27-nation EU of new cars powered by gasoline or diesel.
  • EU lawmakers also endorsed a 55 percent reduction in CO2 from automobiles in 2030 compared with 2021.

India, Iran Reaffirm Cooperation on Development of Chabahar Port

  • India and Iran reaffirmed their commitment to continue their cooperation on the development of the Chabahar Port as a transit hub for the region including Central Asia and said delegates from the two counties will meet soon to address operational aspects of the key port.
  • For India, the Chabahar Port is a much-needed project for sea-access to landlocked Afghanistan. The port has also emerged as a commercial transit hub for the region. It is a more economical and stable route for landlocked countries of the region to reach India and the global market.
  • This commitment to continuing cooperation on the Chabahar Port was made during Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian's visit to India. This is the first visit of Abdollahian since he assumed office in August 2021.
  • The Ministers also discussed international and regional issues, including Afghanistan and the sides reaffirmed the importance of providing immediate humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan and reiterated the need for a representative and inclusive political system in support of a peaceful, secure and stable Afghanistan.

RBI Proposes to Allow Linking of Credit Cards to Unified Payments Interface

  • The Reserve Bank of India proposed to allow linking of credit cards to the Unified Payments Interface. The facility would initially be enabled for Rupay Credit Cards, that too after the required system development is complete. It has informed that UPI is the most inclusive mode of payment in India with over 26 crore unique users and five crore merchants onboard the platform. It added that 594 crore 63 lakh transactions amounting to 10.40 lakh crore rupees were processed through UPI in the month of May 2022 alone.
  • The apex bank hopes that the linking of credit cards with UPI will provide more avenues and convenience to the customers in making payments. The necessary instructions in this regard will be issued by the National Payments Corporation of India. It may be recalled that NPCI had developed UPI as an instant real-time payment system, facilitating inter-bank peer-to-peer and person-to-merchant transactions.

Doordarshan's DG Mayank Agrawal Appointed Prasar Bharti CEO

  • Doordarshan and Doordarshan News Director-General Mayank Kumar Agrawal was given the additional charge of Prasar Bharati Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The move came after the five-year tenure of Shashi Shekhar Vempati as Prasar Bharati CEO came to an end. Mr. Vempati was appointed as CEO of the public broadcaster in June 2017, on the recommendation of a three-member committee headed by the then Vice-President.
  • An alumnus of IIT-Bombay, Mr. Vempati was the youngest and first non-bureaucrat to hold the public office since its creation in 1997.

India's FDI Rank Rises to 7th Position Despite Falling Inflows: UNCTAD

  • India jumped one position to 7th among the top recipients of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the last calendar year (2021) despite FDI inflows into the country declining, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
  • In its latest World Investment Report released, FDI inflows into India declined to $45 billion in 2021 from $64 billion in the preceding year. While the United States ($367 billion) remained the top recipient of FDI, China ($181 billion) and Hong Kong ($141 billion) also retained second and third position respectively.
  • Among the top 10 host economies, only India saw a decline in its inflows. However, outward FDI from India rose 43 per cent to $15.5 billion in 2021.

NASA to Study UFOs Despite 'Reputational Risk'

  • NASA is launching a study of UFOs as part of a new push toward high-risk, high-impact science. The space agency announced that it is setting up an independent team to see how much information is publicly available on the matter and how much more is needed to understand the unexplained sightings. The experts will also consider how best to use all this information in the future. NASA's science mission chief, Thomas Zurbuchen acknowledged the traditional scientific community may see NASA as "kind of selling out" by venturing into the controversial topic, but he strongly disagrees.
  • NASA considers this a first step in trying to explain mysterious sightings in the sky known as UAPs, or unidentified aerial phenomena. The study will begin this fall and last nine months, costing no more than $100,000. It will be entirely open, with no classified military data used.

Ranji Trophy 2022 Quarterfinal: Bengal Create History by Breaking 129-year Record, Nine Batters Including Sports Minister Manoj Tiwary Score Fifties

  • The Bengal Ranji Trophy team created a global first-class record when all nine batters, who took guard, scored half-centuries in a mammoth first innings score of 773 for eight against a hapless Jharkhand on the third day of the quarter-finals.
  • The match will be remembered for a record that stood the test of time since 1893 when the touring Australian team, in a first-class game against combined universities (Oxford and Cambridge), had eight of their batters scoring fifty or more. For Bengal, skipper Abhimanyu Easwaran (65) started the march towards milestone along with fellow opener Abhishek Raman (61).
  • This was followed by impressive knocks from Sudip Gharami (186) and senior-most batter Anushtup Majumdar (117). They added 243 runs for the second wicket. Bengal's junior Sports Minister Manoj Tiwary (73) also added his name to the list along with Abhishek Porel (68), who has not let Bengal miss Wriddhiman Saha for once.
  • RCB all-rounder Shahbaz Ahmed (78) and Sayan Sekhar Mondal (53) also made half-centuries to complete an Indian cricket but when Akash Deep came and smashed 8 sixes in 18-ball-53, the global first-class record was broken after 129 years.

PM Modi Inaugurates Biotech Startup Expo - 2022 in New Delhi

  • PM Modi inaugurated the Biotech Startup Expo 2022 at New Delhi's Pragati Maidan organised by the Department of Biotechnology to celebrate 10 years of Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), showcasing 75 successful startups supported by the agency. He also launched a Biotech products e-portal of 750 biotech products.
  • Speaking of India's bio-economy, the Prime Minister said that India have grown from $10 billion to $80 billion and we are not too far from reaching the league of top-10 countries in biotech's global ecosystem.
  • In the last eight years, the number of startups in our country increased from a few hundred to 70,000. These 70,000 startups are made in about 60 different industries. In this also, more than 5,000 startups are associated with biotech.

NHAI Sets New Guinness World Record, Lays 75-km Long Highway in 105 Hours

  • A new Guinness World Record was created by NHAI in laying 75 km of bituminous concrete in a single lane on NH53 in 105 hours and 33 minutes. Commemorating 75 years of India's independence and under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, NHAI created a world record that was certified by the Guinness World Records.
  • Gadkari congratulated all the engineers, contractors, consultants, and workers from NHAI and Raj Path Infracon Pvt Ltd for the efficient implementation of the project that has helped in the successful completion of this world record. The project was implemented by 720 workers including a team of independent consultants who worked day and night to complete this task.

India Hands over 12 High-speed Guard Boats to Vietnam

  • India formally handed over the 12 high-speed guard boats constructed under the government of India's $100 million defence Line of Credit (LoC) to Vietnam at a ceremony at Hong Ha Shipyard during the visit of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to the South East Asian nation.
  • The speed boats will be operated by the Vietnamese Border Guard Force. The deal was executed by Larsen & Tourbo and of the 12 boats, five were built in India while the remaining were built in Vietnam with assistance from L&T.
  • Hanoi has procured the 12 high-speed patrol boats for the Vietnamese border guard force under the LoC extended in September 2014. In 2016, India has extended another $500 million defence LoC to Vietnam and discussions are under way to identify the equipment. During the bilateral talks, the two Defence Ministers had agreed for "early finalisation" of the second LoC.

Virat Kohli Becomes the 1st Indian to Reach 200 Million Followers on Instagram

  • Indian cricket star Virat Kohli crossed the 200 million followers mark on the social media site Instagram. With this, he became the first Indian to have 200 million followers on Instagram. Kohli is also the third most followed sportsperson on Instagram. Portugal football star Cristiano Ronaldo tops the chart with 451 million followers, ahead of Argentina football captain and FC Barcelona legend Lionel Messi with 334 million followers.
  • Kohli has been the most successful Test captain India has ever produced. After taking over the reins from MS Dhoni, he has led India in 68 Test matches and secured 40 wins at a win percentage of 58.82. Kohli has 27 centuries in Test matches and 43 tons in ODI cricket. He has not scored a century since November 2019. His last ton in international cricket came in a day-night Test against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens.

Ramkrishna Mukkavilli Becomes the First Indian to be Recognised by United Nations Global Compact as Global SDG Pioneer

  • For the first time in the world, an Indian has been named a Global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Pioneer for Water Stewardship by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC). The United Nations Global Compact has named ten new SDG Pioneers, who are corporate leaders who are excelling in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by implementing the UN Global Compact Ten Principles on human rights, environment, labour, and anti-corruption.
  • Professionals working at any level in a firm engaging in the UN Worldwide Compact were targeted for the global search, with winners picked from every continent. Their work covers a wide range of topics, including climate mitigation and adaptation, as well as circular economy and digital transformation.

Grammys Add Five New Categories, Including Songwriter of the Year

  • The Grammys adds a special song for social change award and five new categories including songwriter of the year, giving the Recording Academy an avenue to honour music's best composer. The academy announced that the new non-classical songwriter category will recognise one individual who was the "most prolific" non-performing and non-producing songwriter for a body of new work during an eligibility year. The category is taking a different approach than song of the year, which awards the songwriter or songwriters who wrote the lyrics or melodies to one song.
  • The new category is another huge step for songwriters. In 2022, a rule update allowed that any songwriter, producer, engineer or featured artist on an album nominated for album of the year could ultimately earn a nomination.

IISc is Top Indian University in Global Rankings, Overtakes IITs

  • Rising 31 places in a year, Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru emerged as the highest ranked Indian institute in the 2023 edition of the QS World University rankings, pushing IIT-Bombay to the second position, followed by IIT-Delhi.
  • Apart from IISc at 155, IIT-Bombay (IIT-B) and IIT-Delhi (IIT-D), which have risen five and 11 places to rank 172 and 174 respectively, are the only other Indian institutes in the global league of top 200, in continuation of a trend since 2017. The total number of Indian institutes among the top 1,000 globally has risen to 27 from 22.
  • QS spokesperson William Barbieri attributed the remarkable rise of IISc, which is one of the eight public Institutes of Eminence (IoE), to improvement across four out of six parameters based on which the rankings are prepared.
  • These parameters are — academic reputation (AR), employer reputation (ER), faculty-student ratio (FSR), citations per faculty (CpF), international faculty ratio and international students' ratio.

Five Indian Schools Shortlisted for First-ever World's Best School Prizes

  • Five inspirational Indian schools were named in the top-10 shortlists across different categories for the inaugural USD 2,50,000 World's Best School Prizes, launched in the UK to celebrate schools worldwide for their enormous contribution to society's progress.
  • SVKM's CNM School in Mumbai and SDMC Primary School Lajpat Nagar III in New Delhi have both been named in the top 10 shortlist for World's Best School Prize for Innovation. Khoj School in Mumbai and PCMC English Medium School, Bopkhel, in Pune are among the top 10 schools shortlisted for the prize in the Community Collaboration category.
  • The World's Best School Prizes are founded by UK-headquartered digital media platform T4 Education in partnership with Accenture, American Express, Yayasan Hasanah, Templeton World Charity Foundation, and the Lemann Foundation. The three finalists for each of the five prizes – Community Collaboration, Environmental Action, Innovation, Overcoming Adversity, and Supporting Healthy Lives – will be announced in October 2022. The winners of the World's Best School Prizes will be announced in same month at World Education Week, when a prize of USD 2,50,000 will be equally shared among the winners of the five prizes, with each receiving an award of USD 50,000.
