Morgan Stanley Slashes India's Growth Forecasts
American brokerage Morgan Stanley cut its India growth estimate by 30 basis points for 2022-23 and 2023-24 on global headwinds, and warned that macro stability indicators like inflation are set to "worsen" going ahead.
It expects India to clock a real GDP growth of 7.6% in the current fiscal, as against its earlier estimate of 7.9% and 6.7% in FY24 against 7% forecast earlier. Many analysts have been worried about the impact on the GDP growth as a result of the ongoing geopolitical events. Global slowdown, surging crude oil prices, and weak domestic demand would take a toll on Asia's third-largest economy, said Morgan Stanley.

Six years after India was inducted into the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR), the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully fired the maiden "extended range" version of the BrahMos air-launched missile from Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft. The missile achieved a direct hit on the designated target in the Bay of Bengal region.

Sukhoi jets fitted with existing version of Brahmos (300-km range) are based at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu and are mandated for a maritime role guarding the sea lane of communication.
Yuri Averbakh, a Russian chess grandmaster who was among the world's best players for a decade, trained world champions and was the last surviving participant in one of the greatest competitions in history, died in Moscow. He was 100 — the first grandmaster to reach that age. Yuri Lvovich Averbakh was born on Feb. 8, 1922, in Kaluga, a small town about 100 miles southwest of Moscow. His father worked for the forestry service, and his mother was a teacher. When Averbakh was 3, the family moved to Moscow, where they shared an apartment with two other families.
He learned to play chess at the age of 7 but was not particularly interested in the game at first; growing to 6 feet, 2 inches tall, he preferred volleyball, hockey, skiing and boxing. Everything changed one day when he was 13: He heard a lecture on chess by Nikolay Grigoriev, a master who won the Moscow Championship four times in the 1920s. The lecture, in which Grigoriev showed some chess problems he had composed, had a huge effect on Averbakh's thinking about the game.

In a historic order, the Supreme Court asked the Centre and states not to register any cases of sedition under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code pending an exercise to review the colonial law. It said courts will provide relief to such accused taking into account its order as also the stand taken by the Centre to reconsider the law due to its glaring abuse.
During the hearing, the Centre had opposed the suggestion to stay the operation of the sedition law under Section 124A IPC. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta instead proposed that future FIRs under Section 124A IPC will be filed only after scrutiny by Superintendent of Police in pending cases courts can be directed to expeditiously consider bail.
But the Bench -- which had asked the Centre to clarify if all sedition cases filed across India could be kept in abeyance till the review of Section 124A of the IPC was completed -- didn't agree with Mehta's submission.
