Ashwin Yardi, CEO Of Capgemini India Joins UNICEF YuWaah Board As Co-Chair

  • YuWaah (Generation Unlimited India) in India announced that Ashwin Yardi, CEO of Capgemini in India, joined the organisation, starting immediately, alongside Yasumasa Kimura, UNICEF Representative, as being the co -chair of the organisation.
  • The YuWaah Board would now serve as a decision-making body, with the majority of founding partners and board members providing time and resources to help the YuWaah Secretariat with money and functional expertise.
  • They will play a critical role in influencing YuWaah's long-term strategy and execution, as well as actively crafting shared-value partnerships with governments and the private sector to genuinely establish a collaborative platform.

India, Maldives Unveil Sea Navigation Chart

  • India and Maldives have jointly unveiled the first-ever navigation chart. It helps ships to understand the maritime topography of Maldives Exclusive Economic zones, water depths and which areas to avoid. INS Sutlej is currently deployed to Maldives for undertaking joint hydrographic survey under the MoU on hydrographic cooperation.
  • The two countries have been working together closely in several bilateral, mini-lateral and multilateral fora such as the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium and the Colombo Security Conclave.
  • In 2021, India and Maldives signed a pact for the development of a coast guard harbour for maritime security.

Apple Announces New Partnership to Protect Mangroves in Raigad District

  • Apple teamed with the Applied Environmental Research Foundation (AERF), a Pune-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), to safeguard a 2,400-hectare mangrove environment in Maharashtra's Raigad region.
  • Protecting Mangrove forests have a lot of benefits, not just environmental aspect, but also economically for the fishermen and other communities living in those regions. Mangroves are known as natural bio shields and they lessen damage to coastal areas during the tsunamis and cyclones, which by the way have increased in the recent past in India. Add to that, they greatly help in stopping sand erosion. Also, Mangrove forests act as a great carbon sink, which again helps in slowing the climate change.

Dhanlaxmi Bank Signs MoU with CBDT, CBIC for Tax Collection

  • For the collection of taxes, Dhanlaxmi Bank signed a memorandum of understanding with the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC). The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) authorised the bank to collect different taxes based on a recommendation from the Controller General of Accounts.
  • The technical integration required to implement the seamless flow of remittances from the bank's portal to the CBDT and CBIC portals will be implemented as soon as possible in order to give customers early access to the facilities.
  • Dhanlaxmi Bank, based in Kerala, was placed under the RBI's Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework in November 2015 due to its poor financial condition, and it was in 2021 that it was released. It has been profitable since then.

Chinese Banks Continue to Dominate; ICICI Latest Indian Entrant among Top Banks in APac

  • Chinese banks continued to dominate the ranking of Asia-Pacific's top 50 largest banks by total assets in 2021, helped by strong growth in lending after a pandemic-induced slowdown, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Twenty-two mainland Chinese banks featured in the list, holding combined assets of $34.5 trillion at end-2021, up more than 10 per cent from a year ago.
  • Macquarie and India's ICICI Bank were the newest additions to the top 50 largest Asia-Pacific banks, coming in at number 47 and number 50, respectively. The other two Indian banks in the list were SBI and HDFC Bank.
  • SBI, India's largest bank by assets, jumped two spots to be ranked 22nd in the list with $695 billion in assets. HDFC Bank, the country's private sector bank also improved its position to 44th from 46th last year. ICICI just about made it to the list at number 50 with $226 billion in assets.

IMF Projects India's General Fiscal Deficit at 9.9% of GDP for FY23

  • India's general government fiscal deficit (states and Centre combined) was projected at 9.9 per cent of GDP for FY23 as rising energy and food prices will put renewed pressure on the fiscal gap, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said in its report.
  • With renewed uncertainty on the back of the Russia-Ukraine war, commodity markets have been disrupted fuelling inflation. Governments globally will have to shape their responses against the backdrop of increasing inflation, slowdown in growth, high debt and tightening credit conditions.

FINA Suspends Olympic Champion Evgeny Rylov for Nine Months over Vladimir Putin Rally

  • Russian Olympic champion Evgeny Rylov was suspended for nine months by swimming's world governing body Fina after attending a rally in support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Rylov, 25, was among a number of athletes present at the rally, hosted by Russian president Vladimir Putin at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. They wore the pro-war symbol of the letter 'Z' on their clothing. Rylov won 100m and 200m backstroke gold in Tokyo Olympics 2021.

2022 Asian Wrestling Championships in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; Ravi Dahiya Became the First-ever Indian to Win Hat-trick

  • Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya clinched his third straight Asian Championship gold medal with a dominating performance in the 57kg category, winning the title clash by technical superiority against Kazakhstan's Rakhat Kalzhan.
  • Ravi, the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist, conceded early lead in all his bouts, but as is his wont, bounced back in tremendous fashion to outsmart his rivals in the men's freestyle event.

Mathias Boe Re-hired as Badminton Doubles Coach for Commonwealth Games and Asian Games

  • Former Indian badminton doubles coach Mathias Boe was been re-hired in a bid to strengthen India's Commonwealth and Asian Games preparations. The Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) approved a financial assistance of ₹7 lakh per month to re-hire Boe until the culmination of the Asian Games. He will work with the men's doubles pair of Satwiksai Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty as well as other members of the doubles team.

NIXI-CSC and Tripura Sign MOU to Set up International Data Centre

  • The Tripura state government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the NIXI-CSC Data Services Centre to develop an international grade Data Centre in the state. To establish the projected Data Centre, the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and CSE e-governance services Ltd have formed a joint venture called NIXI-CSC Data Services Centre.
  • The joint venture company will invest Rs. 150 crore in the Data Centre, while the state government will simply supply space.
  • The joint venture will allow the state government to host all of its data in the projected Data Centre, as well as offer data to the state at no cost, according to the MoU. In addition to the state, the corporation will charge for data exchange with other government and private players.

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah Attends 13th NIA Day Celebrations of National Investigation Agency (NIA)

  • NIA set 'Gold Standard' with more than 90 per cent conviction rate and NIA has a very important role to play in fulfilling the Prime Minister's goal of a terror-free India and Zero Tolerance Against Terrorism. NIA investigates crimes where it is difficult to gather evidences; however its achievements are an inspiration for the police and all anti terrorism agencies of the country.
  • The Union Home Minister said that NIA has been in existence for 13 years, during this period more than 400 cases were registered, challans were filed in more than 349 cases, 2,494 criminals were apprehended, 391 persons were successfully sentenced and the conviction ratio is 93.25 per cent.

Suman Bery Appointed NITI Aayog Vice Chairman

  • NITI Aayog vice chairman Rajiv Kumar, who was appointed to India's policy think tank in 2017, resigned in April 2022. He was succeeded by economist Suman Bery. Suman Bery was the director-general of the National Council of Applied Economic Research, or NCAER, one of the country's leading independent policy research institutions, for 10 years from 2001 to 2011. Suman Bery, a senior visiting fellow at the Delhii-headquartered Centre for Policy Research, is a Global Fellow in the Asia program of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington DC. He is a Non-resident Fellow of Bruegel, an economic policy research institution located in Brussels.
  • He also served as a member of the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council, India's Statistical Commission and of the Reserve Bank of India's Technical Advisory Committee on Monetary Policy.

NATO Conducts Cyber Defense Exercises Called Locked Shields in Estonia

  • A cyber organisation recognised by the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation undertook the world's largest and most complicated "live-fire" cyber defence drills. The biennial Locked Shields event, according to the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence in Estonia, was designed to improve the skills of cybersecurity experts protecting national IT systems and vital infrastructure against real-time attacks.
  • The participants are sent to help a fake country deal with a massive cyberattack. The Locked Shields event this year takes place in the midst of the ongoing war in Ukraine, in which hacking has played a steady, albeit minor, role in Russia's invasion. Hackers linked to the Russian government have been accused of assaulting Ukrainian government offices and attempting to break into the power infrastructure.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Inaugurates DefConnect 2.0 Organised by iDEX-DIO

  • With an aim of taking start-ups and innovators in the defence ecosystem to a notch higher, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) Prime and sixth Defence India Start-up Challenge (DISC 6) during DefConnect 2.0 in New Delhi. The iDEX-Prime is aimed at supporting projects, requiring support beyond Rs 1.5 crore up to Rs 10 crore in the ever-growing defence start-ups.
  • Notably, DefConnect will provide a unique opportunity for defence innovators associated with iDEX-DIO to showcase their capabilities, products and state-of-the-art-technologies to the target audience of the industry leaders.

Manipur Celebrated Khongjom Day at Khongjom War Memorial Complex

  • In Manipur, rich tributes were paid to the brave sons of the state who made supreme sacrifice fighting against the British to protect the freedom of Manipur in the battle of Khongjom during the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War.
  • The state-level Khongjom Day celebration was held at Khongjom War Memorial Complex at Khebaching of Thoubal district in which Governor La Ganesan and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh were present along with the public. Manipur celebrates the Khongjom Day every year on 23rd of April remembering Manipuri warriors including Major Paona Brajabashi who fought against the British.

World Malaria Day

  • World Malaria Day is celebrated every year on 25 April to raise awareness about the disease malaria, how to control it and how to eradicate it completely. In 2008, the first Malaria Day was celebrated, which was developed from Africa Malaria Day, which was an event observed since 2001 by the African governments. At the 60th session of the World Health Assembly in 2007, it was proposed that Africa Malaria Day be changed to World Malaria Day.
  • The theme this year is - "Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives."

Ukrainian Prez Zelenskyy Gets John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for Protecting Democracy

  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is among five people named as recipients of the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for acting to protect democracy. The John F. Kennedy Library Foundation said that he was chosen because of the way he has "marshaled the spirit, patriotism and untiring sacrifice of the Ukrainian people in a life-or-death fight for their country.
  • Four U.S. officials were chosen for standing up for free and fair elections, as the system was challenged in ways it has never been before. They are Republican U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers, and Fulton County, Georgia, elections worker Wandrea "Shaye" Moss.

UN Names David Attenborough 'Champion Of The Earth'

  • In honour of David Attenborough's dedication to research, documentation, and advocacy in protecting and restoring nature, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) awarded him prestigious Champions of the Earth Lifetime Achievement Award.
  • The prestigious award recognises the 95-year-old's commitment to telling stories about the natural world and climate change. Accepting the award, Sir David said the world must take action now to protect nature and the planet. His celebrated documentaries include The Green Planet and A Plastic Ocean.
  • This Lifetime Achievement Award is given in a historic year for the global environmental community – 2022 marks 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden.

NMDC Conferred at PRSI Awards 2022

  • The National Mineral Development Corporation Ltd. (NMDC), sweeped the Public Relations Awards 2022 conferred by Public Relations Society of India (PRSI), winning the first position in four categories. The mining major was conferred with this honour for their Corporate Website, Annual Report, Layout and Design of Newsletter, and CSR Corporate Video.
  • The Telangana State Minister Shri V Srinivas Goud lauded the efforts of the PR industry in building an informed society and congratulated the winners. NITI Aayog Releases Draft Battery Swapping Policy, Prioritizes Major Cities

  • Government think tank Niti Aayog released a draft battery swapping policy under which all metropolitan cities with a population above 40 lakh will be prioritised for development of battery swapping network under the first phase.
  • All major cities such as state capitals, UT headquarters and cities with population above 5 lakh will be covered under the second phase, given the importance of the two-wheeler and three-wheeler vehicle segments in growing cities. According to the draft policy, vehicles with swappable batteries will be sold without a battery, providing the benefit of lower purchase costs to potential EV owners.

India's Participation as Guest of Honour at the Paris Book Festival 2022

  • India was designated as the Guest of Honour Country at the Paris Book Festival 2022 organized from 21st to 24th April, 2022 as announced under the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi – President Emmanuel Macron Joint Statement released in 2018 during the French President's visit to New Delhi.

Naveen Patnaik Releases Two Books: The Magic of Mangalajodi, Compilation of Sikh History of East India

  • Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik released two books. The first one is the coffee table book titled "The Magic of Mangalajodi" by Avinash Khemka and the second one is a compilation of the Sikh history of eastern India, "The Sikh History of East India". As per the Chief Minister's Office, the coffee table book provides a bird's-eye view of Mangalajodi in Chilika through fabulous images and descriptions. It also inspires readers to visit and enjoy this spectacular place on earth.
  • The book 'Sikh History of Eastern India' is a rigorous research work by Abinash Mohapatra on Sikh history and philosophy. It's a compilation of eight books authored by Mohapatra himself. Author Mohapatra is a scholar of Sikh History based in Odisha. He has authored 38 books on Sikh history, theology and principles.
