Pakistan Passes Orders to Scrap China-Pak Economic Corridor Authority

  • Pakistan's new government initiated a process to abolish the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Authority, with the planning minister saying it was a "redundant organisation" that wasted resources and thwarted speedy implementation of the ambitious regional connectivity programme.
  • Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal passed orders to the concerned officials to begin the process of abolition of the authority following reports that Chinese power producers have shut down 1,980 megawatts of production capacity due to non-clearance of their Rs. 300 billion dues.
  • The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority established through an ordinance in 2019 was aimed at accelerating the pace of CPEC-related activities, finding new drivers of growth, unlocking the potential of interlinked production networks and global value chains through regional and global connectivity.

India Post Payments Bank Launches 'Fincluvation'

  • Fincluvation– a joint initiative to collaborate with Fintech Startup community to co-create and innovate solutions for financial inclusion was launched on by India Post Payments Bank (IPPB), a 100% government owned entity under the Department of Posts (DoP).
  • The initative is part of the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence - Azadi ka Amrit Mahotasav.
  • The first-of-its-kind industry initiative, Fincluvation would create a powerful platform to mobilize the start-up community towards building meaningful financial products aimed at financial inclusion.
  • Fincluvation will engage startups to participate, ideate, develop and market intuitive and tailored products and services for the customers. It also encourages startups to develop solutions relating to creditization, digitization & more.
  • India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) was launched on September 1, 2018 under the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communication with 100% equity owned by Government of India. The bank has been set up with the vision to build the most accessible, affordable and trusted bank for the common man in India.

RBI Prohibits Issuance of Unsolicited Cards by Issuers

  • The Reserve Bank asked card companies not to issue unsolicited credit cards or upgrade an existing card without the explicit consent of the customer, failing which they will have to pay double the billed amount as penalty.
  • It also asked card issuers and third-party agents not to resort to intimidation or harassment during recovery of dues from customers.

Govt. Moves Ahead with Proposal to Merge Coal India Arm with MECL

  • The government is moving ahead with a proposal to merge Coal India arm CMPDI with the Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Ltd (MECL) and will prepare a cabinet note on the same.
  • Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Ltd (CMPDI) is the planning and design arm of Coal India Ltd (CIL).
  • MECL functions under the Ministry of Mines with 100 per cent government holding, for systematic exploration of minerals.

Bharti-backed OneWeb, ISRO Unit Sign Agreement for Satellite Launches

  • OneWeb, a company backed by the Bharti Group, and New Space India Limited, the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation, inked an agreement for satellite launches.
  • New Space's first launch is anticipated in 2022 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
  • The launches will add to OneWeb's total in-orbit constellation of 428 satellites, which is 66 per cent of the planned total fleet, to build a global network that will deliver high-speed, low-latency connectivity.

Fourteen-year-old Unnati Hooda Seals Asian Games, Uber Cup Berths

  • Fourteen-year-old teenage sensation from Rohtak Unnati Hooda secured her place in the Asian Games as well as Uber Cup by finishing third in the women's singles. Hooda is the youngest Indian badminton player to be part of the Asian Games squad.
  • A 10-member women's team for the Asian Games and Uber Cup consists of PV Sindhu, Kashyap, Chaliha, Hooda alongside Top-3 doubles pairs from the trials—Treesa Jolly-Gayatri P, N Sikki Reddy-Ashwini Ponappa and Tanisha Crasto-Shruti Mishra.

IAF, Navy Tie Up with DRDO to Acquire CHAFF to Shield Warships, Fighter Aircraft

  • The Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy tied up with the Defence Research Development Organisation to get the CHAFF technology, which protects the warship from an anti-ship missile during hostilities. India is now the second country after the United States to develop this ability, a major Aatmanirbhar push in the field of defence.
  • CHAFF is a critical defence technology used to protect fighter aircrafts or naval ships from enemy radar-guided missile during war. The significance of this technology lies in the fact that very less quantity of CHAFF material deployed in the air acts as a decoy to deflect enemy's missiles to ensure safety of the fighter aircraft or naval ships.
  • Developed by the DRDO, the technology includes all three variants of CHAFF rockets namely Short Range Chaff Rocket (SRCR), Medium Range Chaff Rocket (MRCR) and Long Range Chaff Rocket (LRCR), and have been inducted in the Indian Navy after successful user trials.

  • National Panchayati Raj Day is celebrated every year on 24 April in India. The Constitution (73rd Amendment) Act, 1992 that came into force with effect from 24th April, 1993 has vested constitutional status on Panchayati Raj institutions. This date thus marks a defining moment in the history of decentralization of political power to the grassroots level.
  • In 2010 the first National Panchayati Raj Day was celebrated. Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh declared the first National Panchayati Raj Day on 24 April 2010.

Atal Pension Yojana Enrollments Crossed 4.01 crore by End of March 2022

  • Total enrollments under Atal Pension Yojana, APS, Scheme crossed 4.01 crore in April 2022, out of which more than 99 lakh accounts for this scheme were opened during last financial year. The scheme had seen this tremendous success due to the active participation of all categories of banks.
  • Around 71 per cent of the enrolments done by Public-Sector Banks, 19 per cent by Regional Rural Banks, six per cent by Private Sector Banks and three per cent by Payment and Small Finance Banks. State Bank of India, Indian Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Central Bank of India achieved their annual targets for this scheme in the Public-Sector Bank category.
  • The Atal Pension Yojana (APY) was launched on 09 May, 2015 to create a universal social security system for all Indians, especially the poor, the under-privileged and the workers in the unorganised sector.

Skill India Organized National Apprenticeship Mela 2022

  • National Apprenticeship Mela-2022 was organized across the country in more than over 700 locations. Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the Apprenticeship Mela at an event in New Delhi. He said the initiative will empower the youth of the nation. He stated that people will be job creators through this Apprenticeship programme. Mr. Pradhan said apprenticeship boosts the confidence level of a person.
  • The event witnessed participation from more than four thousand organizations across the country, operating in more than 30 sectors such as Power, Retail, Telecom, IT/ITeS, Electronics, and Automotive. In addition, the aspiring youth had the opportunity to engage and select from more than 500 trades including Welder, Electrician, Housekeeper, Beautician, and Mechanic.
