Cabinet Approves Signing of MoC between India and Japan in Decentralized Domestic Waste Water Management
The Union Cabinet gave its ex-post facto approval for a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed between the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation of Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Ministry of the Environment of Japan in the areas of Decentralized Domestic Waste Water Management. A Management Council (MC) will be formed which will be responsible for the implementation of this MoC by formulating detailed activities of collaboration and the monitoring of its progress. The collaboration with Japan through the MoC shall prove to very fruitful in areas such as Decentralized Domestic Wastewater Management and Effective reuse of treated wastewater using Johkasou technology.
20th India-France Joint Staff Talks
With an aim to actively enhance the defence cooperation, India and France concluded its 20th edition of Joint Talks. The high-level talks were held in Paris, France. The two-day talks focused on new initiatives that fall within the umbrella of the existing bilateral defence cooperation and strengthening of ongoing defence engagements between both the countries.
With an aim to improve defence cooperation between the two countries both at strategic and operational level, the India-France Joint Staff forum was launched. The 20th edition of India-France Joint talks came amidst, both nations have inked a roadmap to enhance their bilateral exchanges on the blue economy and forge a common vision of ocean governance based on the rule of law and cooperate on sustainable and resilient coastal and waterways infrastructure.
The Government Exempts the Import of Cotton from Customs Duties
The Government decided to exempt all customs duty on import of cotton to lower the price of cotton in the public interest. This exemption would benefit the textile chain- yarn, fabric, garments and made ups and provide relief to textile industry and consumers. Industry has been demanding for removal of 5% Basic Customs Duty (BCD) and 5% Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC) on raw cotton. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) notified the exemption from Customs duty and Agriculture Infrastructure development Cess for import of cotton. Removal of import duty on raw cotton should have salutary effect on cotton price in India.
ICICI Bank Inks MoU with GIFT SEZ to Promote Global, Indian Businesses
Private sector lender, ICICI Bank signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GIFT SEZ to promote global and Indian businesses there.
As part of the MoU, ICICI Bank and GIFT SEZ would jointly work towards attracting global investors and capital market firms to set up operations in GIFT City, Gandhinagar. Both the organisations would promote GIFT SEZ among Indian and foreign MNCs as the preferred location for availing cross-border trade finance.
The two institutions would act in a coordinated manner to promote GIFT SEZ as a hub for wealth management business. Another objective of the MoU is to promote GIFT SEZ as the destination of choice for offering competitive regime for setting up capital markets business among industry stakeholders such as Alternate Investment Fund (AIF), Portfolio Management Services (PMS), Broking Entities, Venture Capital, Private Equity Funds and Custodians.
Young Indian Grandmaster R. Pragganandhaa Wins Prestigious Reykjavik Open Chess Tournament
Young Indian Grandmaster, R Pragganandhaa won the prestigious Reykjavik Open chess tournament in Reykjajvik, Iceland with 7.5 points from nine rounds. The 16-year-old Pragganandhaa defeated compatriot GM D Gukesh in the final round to emerge sole winner.
The highly-rated Indian remained unbeaten through the nine rounds and finished with wins over Matthieu Cornette of France and Gukesh in the last two rounds. He had recently hogged the limelight after stunning world No.1 Magnus Carlsen in an online tournament.
Netherlands lift fourth FIH Junior Women's Hockey World Cup title, beating Germany 3-1
The Netherlands lifted their fourth FIH Junior Women's Hockey World Cup title after beating Germany 3-1 in the final at Potchefstroom, South Africa. Giving an early lead to the Netherlands, Danique van der Veerdonk scored first goal in seven minutes. Then, Germany's Sophia Schwabe equalized the score in 32nd minute. Just after two minutes, Tessa Beetsma restored her Dutch team's lead to 2-1.
Beetsma then bagged her brace in 44th minute. With a superb performance, the Netherlands conceded their first goal of the tournament in summit clash. Till the final, the Netherlands had scored 46 goals and conceded none. Earlier, England defeated India 3-0 in the shoot-out after a 2-2 draw to claim the bronze medal in the third-place match.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Inaugurated the 'Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya'
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 'Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya' during the celebration of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav in the national capital, as a tribute to every prime minister in the country since independence, irrespective of their ideology or tenure in office.
The museum is aimed at sensitising and inspiring the younger generation about the leadership, and achievements of Indian prime ministers. The museum will be open to the public with tickets of Rs 100 and Rs 110.
The museum tells the story of India after its independence through the lives and contributions of its prime ministers. Starting from freedom struggle, and the making of the Constitution, the museum goes on to tell the story of how Prime Ministers navigated the nation through various challenges and ensured the progress of the country.
The central government re-appointed retired Punjab-cadre IPS officer Iqbal Singh Lalpura as the chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities. Lalpura, who was first appointed as chairman in September in 2021, had to resign from the post in December to contest as the BJP candidate from Ropar assembly constituency, which he lost.
A Sikh intellectual, who has written books on Sikh and Punjabi culture, Lalpura, was appointed BJP spokesperson in September 2021. He had retired as deputy inspector general (DIG), Punjab Police, before joining the BJP in 2012. He served as the senior superintendent of police of Amritsar Rural, Kapurthala and Tarn Taran districts.
Israel Successfully Tests New Laser Missile Defense System
Israel's new laser missile defense system has successfully intercepted mortars, rockets and anti-tank missiles in recent tests. The announcement came near the anniversary of the 11-day Israel-Gaza war, in which Gaza's ruling Hamas militant group fired more than 4,000 rockets toward Israel.
Israel said its Iron Dome defense system has been a great success, with a 90% interception rate against incoming rocket fire. But officials say the system is expensive to deploy, and the new laser defense will be much more cost-effective.
Hanuman Jayanti is a Hindu festival during which devotees across India celebrate Lord Hanuman's birth. According to the Hindu calendar, this festival is held every year in the lunar month of Chaitra. Hanuman Jayanti is celebrated on the day of the full moon in Chaitra. It fell on April 16 this year (2022).

Prabhat Patnaik Selected for Malcolm Adiseshiah Award 2022
Renowned Indian economist and political commentator Prabhat Patnaik was selected for the 2022 Malcom Adiseshiah Award. The award is given annually by the Malcolm and Elizabeth Adiseshiah Trust to an outstanding social scientist selected from nominations received by a specially constituted national jury.
The award comprises a citation and prize money of Rs. 2 lakh. It would be presented at a function to be held in Chennai.

The first quiz is on Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. The scheme is a pro-poor scheme intended to reduce the challenges encountered by the poor because of disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Sabka Vikas MahaQuiz series" aims to sensitise the participants about the various government schemes and initiatives. The government has been working to ensure basic necessities to all citizens of the country through various programmes and schemes for the holistic welfare of all citizens, especially the poor and marginalised sections of society.

"Amrit Samagam" Conference of Tourism and Culture Ministers
The Amrit Samagam, a summit of the country's cultural and tourism ministers was launched by Union Minister of Home Affairs, Amit Shah. This summit was launched in New Delhi.
This is a two-day conference that was hosted by the Ministry of Culture as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM).
The topics of discussion at this conference included landmark initiatives of AKAM like Swatantra Swar, Har Ghar Jhanda, Digital District Repository, and Mera Gaon Meri Dharohar.
Also, in this conference, the Ministry of Tourism focused on the significant contributions made by the organization to the AKAM campaign.
The Utsav Portal website was launched by G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Tourism, Culture, and DONER during this conference. It is a Ministry of Tourism's digital initiative that will be used to showcase all festivals, events, and live darshans across the country with the aim of promoting different regions of India as popular tourist destinations across the world.
