Senate confirms Ketanji Brown Jackson as first Black women to Supreme Court

  • In a momentous occasion in American history, the United States Senate confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman to sit in the country's highest court. The United States Senate took the historic decision by 53-47 votes after three Republican Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Mitt Romney voted in her favour along with 50 members of the ruling Democratic Party.
  • "Judge Jackson's confirmation was a historic moment for our nation. We've taken another step toward making our highest court reflect the diversity of America. She will be an incredible Justice, and I was honoured to share this moment with her," President Biden
  • She attended Harvard as an undergraduate and for law school and served on the US Sentencing Commission, the agency that develops federal sentencing policy, before becoming a federal judge in 2013.

Madagascar Joins Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure

  • Madagascar joined the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) becoming the 30th country to join the partnership launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his speech at the UN Climate Action Summit in September 2019.
  • CDRI is a partnership of national governments, UN agencies and programmes, multilateral development banks and financing mechanisms, the private sector, and knowledge institutions that aims to promote the resilience of new and existing infrastructure systems to climate and disaster risks in support of sustainable development. The CDRI Secretariat is based in New Delhi, India.
  • CDRI claims to promote the rapid development of resilient infrastructure to respond to the Sustainable Development Goals' imperatives of expanding universal access to basic services, enabling prosperity and decent work.

RBI Issues Guidelines for Banks to Set up 24X7 Digital Banking Units

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that existing banks can open digital banking units to offer products and services in both self-served and assisted mode round-the-clock. In the Union Budget, the government announced the setting up of at least 75 such units in 75 districts to commemorate 75 years of the country's independence as 'Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav'.
  • According to the guidelines on the establishment of Digital Banking Units (DBUs), the products and services to be provided at a DBU include, opening of accounts, cash withdrawal and deposit, KYC update, loans and complaint registrations.

Jio-bp and TVS Motor to Collaborate on EV Solutions

  • Jio-bp and TVS Motor Company agreed to explore the creation of a robust public EV charging infrastructure for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers in the country, building on Jio-bp's growing network in this space.
  • Under this proposed partnership, the customers of TVS electric vehicles are expected to get access to the widespread charging network of Jio-bp, which is also open to other vehicles.
  • Jio-bp is operating its EV charging and swapping stations under the brand Jio-bp pulse.
  • This partnership will help drive EV adoption in the country among two and three-wheeler customers who aspire to take a step forward in going electric. The rapid proliferation of these charging stations will broaden both the companies' horizons and expedite India's net-zero emission goals.

Bandhan-led Consortium Buys IDFC's Mutual Fund Business

  • Bandhan Financial Holding-led consortium entered into a definitive agreement to acquire IDFC Asset Management Company and IDFC AMC Trustee Company for Rs 4,500 crore, subject to receipt of necessary regulatory approvals, an official said on Wednesday.
  • Bandhan Financial Holding is the holding company of private sector lender Bandhan Bank.
  • The consortium led by it also includes private equity firm ChrysCapital and Singapore's sovereign fund GIC. In the consortium, the equity pattern is 60% for Bandhan Financial Holding and 20% each for the other two partners.
  • Bandhan Financial is also the holding company of Kolkata-based private sector lender Bandhan Bank.

Amazon Signs Contract with Three Firms to Launch its Satellite Internet

  • The tech firm secured up to 83 launches over a five-year period, which the company claims is the greatest commercial launch vehicle procurement in history. Arianespace, Blue Origin, and United Launch Alliance (ULA) have agreed to deploy the majority of Amazon's Project Kuiper satellites, which aim to provide high-speed, low-latency broadband to a wide variety of clients around the world.
  • The tech firm has secured up to 83 launches over a five-year period, which the company claims is the greatest commercial launch vehicle procurement in history.
  • The contracts call for 18 launches on Arianespace's Ariane 6 rockets, 12 launches on Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin's New Glenn, with options for up to 15 more launches, and 38 flights on ULA's newest heavy-lift launch vehicle, the Vulcan Centaur.
  • The announcement brings Amazon's satellite internet constellation one step closer to reality, as Elon Musk's SpaceX continues to launch more Starlink satellites, bringing the total number of Starlink satellites launched to about 2300, and increasing Starlink's global subscriber base to about 2.5 lakh.

  • Top Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth progressed to the semi-finals of the Korea Open Super 500 badminton tournament with contrasting wins in Suncheon. Third seed Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, notched up her 17th win over familiar foe Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-10, 21-16 in the women's singles quarter-finals.

Govt Mandates Vehicles' Fitness Testing via Automated Stations from 2023

  • The government made fitness testing of vehicles through Automated Testing Stations (ATS) mandatory in a phased manner starting April 2022. An Automated Testing Station (ATS) uses mechanical equipment to automate the various tests required to check the fitness of a vehicle. Fitness testing for personal vehicles (non-transport) is done at the time of renewal of registration (after 15 years).
  • According to the notification, renewal of certificate of fitness will be for two years for commercial vehicles (transport) that are up to eight years old and one year for commercial vehicles (transport) that are older than eight years.

LS Speaker: 'One Nation, One Legislative Platform' by 2023

  • The proceedings of all legislatures, both Houses of Parliament and state assemblies and legislative councils, will be available on one platform by 2023, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said.
  • Birla said that the government is working on bringing proceedings of all state legislatures on one platform. I think we will be able to do it by 2023.
  • He said that the platform would provide lot of information to public. Besides, the endeavour is to provide all the documents through metadata so that people can access the proceedings of the House.
  • The idea of such a platform was mooted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his address at the inaugural session of 82nd All India Presiding Officers' Conference on November 17, 2021.

Yogi Adityanath's Govt. to Build Rainwater Harvesting Pits in Villages

  • The Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has decided to form water committees and ensure conservation of water leaking from pipelines by construction of rainwater harvesting pits on a war footing. The purpose is to conserve rainwater and reuse the same.
  • The responsibility for this has been entrusted to Namami Gange and Rural Water Supply Department.
  • It has been decided that programmes will be expedited to complete village to village water conservation schemes on a war footing.

India - Kyrgyzstan Joint Special Forces Exercise Khanjar Concludes At Bakloh (HP)

  • The 9th Edition of the India – Kyrgyzstan Joint Special Forces Exercise "Khanjar" which commenced on 25 Mar 2022 at Special Forces Training School, Bakloh (HP) culminates.
  • Over the past two weeks, Special Forces contingents from India and Kyrgyzstan shared their expertise and best practices of tactics, techniques and procedures to counter existing and emergent threats across the entire spectrum of conflict. Combat shooting, sniping, survival in mountains, hostage rescue drills and unarmed combat were practiced extensively during the Exercise.
  • Besides sharing special skills and techniques between participating Special Forces contingents, the joint training further strengthened the existing bond between India and Kyrgyzstan that has fostered over years of mutual respect for strategic autonomy, democratic values and zero tolerance for terrorism.

Weapons of Mass Destruction (Amendment) Bill

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Amendment Bill, 2022. The Bill was passed to amend the Weapons of Mass Destruction and their Delivery Systems (Prohibition of Unlawful Activities) Act, 2005.
  • In accordance with India's international commitments, the amendment bill was passed to prohibit the financing of the spread of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems.
  • The 2005 Act prohibited the transport, manufacturing, and transfer of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems.
  • The amendment of the act was necessary as in recent times, the various regulations that are in place and are related to weapons of mass destruction and their delivery system's proliferation by international organizations have increased. The Financial Action Task Force also has sanctioned the financing of weapons of mass destruction and their delivery systems proliferation.

Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Government to Start Basic Online Course in MSME

  • To inculcate and encourage business development skills in youth, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh will soon start an online course in entrepreneurship. The course will be conducted at college level and will fetch a certificate for the participants on completion. The certification will be given by the MSME and export promotion departments.
  • The course will have general certifications besides advance courses in specific areas like food processing, agricultural production, organic farming and mechanical work in subsequent stages.
  • The department has also envisaged the idea of introducing entrepreneurial skills at the senior secondary level so that the foundation of their self-reliance is laid in the formative years.

'One Health' Pilot Project Launched by Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying

  • The Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), Government of India launched a pilot project in the state of Uttarakhand to implement the One Health Framework by One Health Support Unit. The key objective of the Unit is to develop a national One Health roadmap based on the learnings of the pilot project implementation. The 'One Health India' program initiated by the Department will work with stakeholders from various sectors to improve livestock health, human health, wildlife health, and environmental health through technology and finance
  • The pilot in Uttarakhand will support the creation of the One Health Framework for India and help build strong social infrastructure that supports the health of the people and the planet.
  • Based on the recommendations of Project Steering Committee (PSC), State and district level one health committees need to be constituted by involving competent authorities from health, animal husbandry and environment ministries.

Sarhul Festival 2022 Celebrated in Jharkhand

  • Sarhul is the festival of the New Year celebrated in the state of Jharkhand by the tribal communities as part of the local Sarna religion. It is celebrated in the Hindu month of Chaitra, three days after the appearance of the new moon. It is also a celebration of the beginning of spring. The word "Sarhul" is connected with tree worship. It is a festival where nature is venerated.
  • Sarhul is celebrated by many tribes in Jharkhand, but most notably the Munda, Ho, and Oraon tribes. While nature veneration is an important aspect of the festival, there are also many cultural programmes that are enjoyed along with it.
  • Among these many cultural events is"Baa Porob", the festival of flowers and the worship of the Sal Tree as well as a special Sarhul dance.
  • The festivities around Sarhul are made even more special with the many festive delicacies that are cooked and enjoyed, such as the rice dish called "handia"', a baked or dried fish dish called "fish sukha".
