India's Aprajita Sharrma Selected for the Prestigious ITU Position

  • An Indian official was selected as vice-chairperson of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) Council Standing Committee on Administration and Management, giving India a leadership position. Ms. Aprajita Sharma, an IP&TAF Service officer, was appointed vice-chair of the Standing Committee on Administration and Management at the International Telecommunication Union's Council session.
  • Aprajita would continue to serve as vice-chairperson of the Council Standing Committee in 2023 and 2024 and as chairman in 2025 and 2026.

Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari Inaugurates Himalayan Hydro Expo-2022

  • Nepal President Bidya Devi Bhandari inaugurated the Himalayan Hydro Expo-2022, a three-day event aimed to boost the viability and capacity of the hydroelectric sector in the country.
  • At the expo, close to 100 companies from India and Nepal are showcasing their products and services related to hydropower generation. Themed "creating markets for Nepal's hydropower", around 60,000 people are expected to visit the expo.

India Sees Warmest March in 122 years, Lowest Rainfall Since 1908

  • India recorded its warmest March in 122 years with a severe heat wave scorching large swathes of the country in the month, the India Meteorological Department said. The weather department attributed the unusual heat to the lack of rainfall due to the absence of active western disturbances over north India and any major system over south India.
  • The country as a whole recorded a rainfall of 8.9 mm, which was 71 per cent less than its long period average rainfall of 30.4 mm. It was also the third-lowest precipitation in March since 1901 after 7.2 mm in 1909 and 8.7 mm in 1908.
  • The countrywide average minimum temperature of 20.24 degrees Celsius in March this year was the third highest in 122 years after 20.26 degrees Celsius in 1953 and 20.25 degrees Celsius in 2010.

Indian Overseas Bank, Software Technology Park of India Ink MoU

  • Public sector Indian Overseas Bank signed a memorandum of understanding with the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and STPINEXT (a Section 8 company of STPI) for leveraging innovation through the financial technologies engaged under the FinBlue initiative.
  • The FinBlue initiative by STPI is an integrated programme to start-ups to scale through its incubation facility. It provides access to the financial technology ecosystem that consists of bankers, financial institutions, mentors, investors among others.

IFSCA inks MoU with IRDAI

  • Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) for cooperation and coordination with respect to exchange and sharing of information, knowledge for effective supervision.
  • The IFSCA is responsible for development and regulation of international financial services, including that of insurance sector, in the IFSC, which is treated as a separate international financial jurisdiction, distinct from rest of India. IFSCA aims to develop a strong global connect and focus on the needs of the Indian economy as well as to serve as an international financial platform at regional/ global level.
  • This MoU would enable coordination, cooperation and collaboration between the two regulators to attract global insurance industry players, including Indian insurance players seeking international markets to create and develop innovative insurance solutions for both India and the world, in a conducive environment.

PM Narendra Modi, Sher Deuba Launch RuPay Payment Card in Nepal

  • Nepal became the fourth foreign country to operationalise the RuPay card with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Nepalese counterpart Sher Bahadur Deuba jointly launching the Indian electronic payment system in the Himalayan nation. The three other countries that have the RuPay card are Bhutan, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. The launch of the card in Nepal would open new vistas for cooperation in financial connectivity, and is expected to facilitate bilateral tourist flows as well as further strengthen people-to-people linkages.
  • RuPay card scheme was launched in 2012 as part of the Reserve Bank of India's vision to have a domestic, open and multilateral system of payments.

Spacetech Start-up Pixxel Launches 'Shakuntala' Satellite with Elon Musk's SpaceX

  • A SpaceX rocket carried a low-orbit imaging satellite built by Bengaluru-headquartered startup Pixxel into space, a first for the company to place a slew of satellites in space to track earth phenomena, particularly climate change. Weighing under 15 kg, the satellite can pack 10 m in a pixel, exceeding by a third the specificity of comparable launches by ISRO, NASA, and others, said Pixxel.
  • The satellite can beam down data relating to deforestation, melting of ice caps, gas leakage, crop health and other data critical for climate change assessments.

Leh to Sign Tripartite Agreement to Develop Hanley as Dark Sky Sanctuary

  • Leh Administration will sign a tripartite agreement to develop Hanley as Dark Sky Sanctuary and Leh Hill Council, WildLife and Tourism departments wouldjointly develop the area for Astrotourism.
  • The State WildLife Development board has increased the frequency of meetings for early clearances of various projects and compensation fee is increased and the wildlife agencies are instructed to release compensation within 15 days, in case wild animals cause injuries to domesticated cattle.

Meghalaya would be Hosting 83rd National Table Tennis Championship 2022

  • Meghalaya is geared up to host the 83rd National Table Tennis Championship 2022, which will take place at the SAI Indoor Training Centre, NEHU in Shillong from April 18 to 25. This is the second time the Northeast has hosted the world's largest table tennis tournament. This tournament is being hosted in honour of the State's 50th anniversary of statehood. The cost of hosting the tournament is projected to be 1.5 crore rupees, with a total of 10 players from the State scheduled to compete.
  • The State is expecting around 650 people to attend, with 450 of them being players and the rest being coaches and support personnel. He went on to say that the state is expecting a variety of officers from several states, including Haryana's Deputy Chief Minister.

Australia wins ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2022

  • Australia beat England by 71 runs in the finals to claim their seventh Women's World Cup at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, New Zealand. Alyssa Healy of Australia scored 170 runs in the match, the highest individual score made by any cricketer, male or female, in the World Cup Final. She was also the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 509 runs.
  • The Player of the Tournament went to Alyssa Healy. Sophie Ecclestone of England was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament, with 21 dismissals. The 2022 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup was the 12th edition of the Women's Cricket World Cup. The tournament was held in New Zealand from 4 March to 3 April 2022.

Anurag Thakur Launches Logo, Mascot Jersey & Anthem of Khelo India University Games 2021

  • Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur and Governor of Karnataka, TC Gehlot launched the logo, jersey, mascot and anthem of the Khelo India University Games 2021 (KIUG 2021), at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru. The theme song has been composed by Kannada rapper Chandan Shetty. The KIUG 2021 will be held in Karnataka between April 24 and May 3, 2022.
  • This will be the second edition of KIUG. The first edition was hosted by Odisha in 2020. KIUG 2021 was postponed for 2022 due to the Covid crisis. A Khelo India App for live updates on the Games has also been launched by Karnataka. Around 4500 athletes, representing 20 sports from across the country will participate in the KIUG 2021.

  • Dr. S. Raju took over as the Director General of Geological Survey of India (GSI) in Kolkata. After taking over as DG, GSI Dr. Raju said that Geological Survey of India is poised to focus continuously on the programs of core national importance in the field of mineral resources augmentation in the country and to aim at for closer interactions and engagements with the mining sector, industries and academic institutes of national and international repute.

NCW Launches Anti-Human Trafficking Cell

  • The National Commission for Women (NCW) launched an anti-human trafficking cell. The facility will raise awareness among law enforcement officials and promote capacity-building. It will also conduct gender sensitisation training workshops for police officials and prosecutors at the regional, state and district level.
  • The complaints related to human trafficking received by the Commission will be addressed by this Cell. The Cell will further help survivors of trafficking in rebuilding lives by providing them with need-based training.

BJP First Party since 1988 to Cross 100-seat Mark in Rajya Sabha

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) became the first party since 1988 to touch the 100-seat mark in the Rajya Sabha with the results of biennial elections to the Upper House. The BJP and NDA's growing strength in Rajya Sabha is also likely to translate into the government legislation having a smoother passage in the Upper House.
  • The rise of BJP numbers in the House has been accompanied by a decline in Congress numbers as the opposition party has lost a string of assembly polls since 2014.

International Day of Mine Awareness

  • The United Nations' International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is celebrated every year on the 4th of April. The day aims to raise awareness about landmines and progress toward their eradication. "Mine action" refers to a range of efforts to clear landmines and explosive remnants of war and to mark and fence off dangerous areas.
  • In 2022 the United Nations Mine Action Service marked the Day under the theme "Safe Ground, Safe Steps, Safe Home." The focus of the observance is on the impressive achievements of the global mine action community, starting with the work of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL).

Indian- American Singer Wins Grammy Award 2022 in Best Children's Album Category

  • New York-based Indian singer Falguni Shah, known by her stage name Falu, won a Grammy Award for 'A Colorful World' in the best children's album category. The singer, known for her "modern inventive style with a formidable Indian classically-shaped vocal talent", was previously nominated for a Grammy in the same category for her 2018 album "Falu's Bazaar".
  • Shah, who is in her early 40s, has trained in Hindustani Classical music in the Jaipur musical tradition and in the Benares style of thumrie under Kaumudi Munshi and semi classical music from Uday Mazumdar.

9th-century Sculpture of Lord Vishnu Recovered from Jehlum River in Pulwama

  • In the Kashmir Valley, an ancient sculpture of Lord Vishnu dating back to 9th Century was recovered from River Jehlum in Kakapora area of the Pulwama district. Some labourers while extracting sand in river Jehleum in Lelhara Kakapora area of Pulwama district, Jammu and Kashmir found an ancient sculpture from the river. After finding the sculpture, they contacted the local police who rushed to the spot and took the sculpture into their possession.
  • The sculpture is a three headed Lord Vishnu and is made of black and green colour stone, is a unique sculpture of the 9th Century, was later handed over to the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums of Jammu and Kashmir.

Army Dedicates First Floating Hamlet On Srinagar's Dal Lake To Citizens

  • The Army dedicated the soft launch of Kashmir's first floating hamlet on the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, a defence spokesperson said. Lt Gen Pandey said Dal Lake is the jewel in the crown of Kashmir and keeping it clean was the responsibility of all citizens and especially those who have made the lake their home.
  • Residents of Kachri Mohalla appreciated the Union Territory government and the Army's efforts in highlighting the initiative and urged the corps commander and the divisional commissioner to request Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to visit the hamlet.
