First Wildlife Bond Issued by World Bank to Save Africa's Black Rhino

  • The World Bank (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, IBRD) issued the Wildlife Conservation Bond (WCB)to support of South Africa's efforts to conserve endangered species of Black Rhino. Wildlife Conservation Bond (WCB) is also known as "Rhino Bond". It is a five-year $150 million Sustainable Development Bond. It includes a potential performance payment from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
  • The bond will contribute to protecting and increasing black rhino populations in two protected areas in South Africa namely the Addo Elephant National Park (AENP) and the Great Fish River Nature Reserve (GFRNR).

Union Minister Shri Anurag Thakur Launches TEJAS Skilling Project at Dubai Expo

  • In March 2022, on Day 2 of his visit to Dubai, Union Minister Shri Anurag Thakur today launched TEJAS (Training for Emirates Jobs And Skills), a Skill India International Project to train overseas Indias. The project is aimed at skilling, certification and overseas employment of Indians. Tejas is aimed at creating pathways to enable Indian workforce to get equipped for skill and market requirements in UAE.The Minister said that our focus is skill this population and provide the world with a large skilled workforce from India.Shri Thakur reiterated Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a strong partnership between India and UAE. Tejas aims at creating a 10,000 strong Indian workforce in UAE during the initial phase.
  • Upon his arrival at the Dubai Expo, the Minister was greeted by a crowd of enthusiastic Indian expatriates outside the majestic Indian Pavilion.

RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das Inaugurates Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH) in Bengaluru

  • RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das inaugurated the Reserve Bank Innovation Hub (RBIH) in Bengaluru, which was established with a Rs. 100 crore initial capital contribution to foster and nurture financial innovation. According to the central bank, the Hub has an independent Board with Senapathy (Kris) Gopalakrishnan as Chairman and other notable people from industry and academics as members.
  • RBIH intends to build an ecosystem that promotes access to financial services and goods for the country's low-income people.The Hub would bring together several stakeholders in the financial innovation area (BFSI sector, startup ecosystem, regulators, and academia).

Payments Council of India Re-elects Vishwas Patel as Chairman

  • Infibeam Avenues' executive director Vishwas Patel was re-elected as chairman of the Payments Council of India (PCI), the apex industry body for digital operators in India's payments and settlement system that operates under the aegis of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI). Patel made a significant contribution towards shaping and giving direction to the digital payments industry for more than twenty years.
  • At its executive council meeting, PCI also elected new co-chairs: Praveena Rai, COO, National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and MN Srinivasu, co-founder and director at BillDesk. The council also elected chairs and co-chairs of its seven committees.

India's First-ever SAI National Centre of Excellence for Mountain Terrain Biking and Bicycle Motocross to be Set up in Shimla

  • The centre to be build in collaboration with the Youth Services and Sports department of Himachal Pradesh is being set up to provide world-class training facilities to Indian cyclists so that they can compete for 18 Olympic medals on offer in the disciplines of MTB and BMX. Owing to the requirement of the sport for a hilly terrain and a suitable climate for training, Shimla emerged as a preferred choice for the NCOE.
  • The collaboration between the centre and the state to set up this world-class facility was formalised with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2022.

P. V. Sindhu Beats Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan to Win Swiss Open Title 2022

  • Ace Indian shuttler P.V. Sindhu clinched her second women's singles title of the season with a straight game win over Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan. Playing her second successive final in the tournament, Sindhu, a double Olympic medallist, took 49 minutes to get the better of the fourth seeded Busanan 21-16, 21-8 at the St. Jakkobshalle.
  • For Sindhu, it was a moment of glory as she finally lifted the trophy after losing to Rio Olympics gold medallist Carolina Marin of Spain in the final of last edition. She is the second Indian woman to win the Swiss Open, Saina Nehwal having won in 2011 and 2012.

Italy Fails to Qualify for 2022 FIFA World Cup after Shock Loss to North Macedonia

  • Italy has gone from winning the European Championship failing to qualify for the World Cup in just eight months. Italy will miss out on back-to-back World Cups for the first time in the national team's storied history, having also failed to get to the tournament in 2018.
  • It was only in July that Roberto Mancini and his players were celebrating winning Euro 2020 at Wembley Stadium, supposedly completing Italian soccer's redemption story.

Union Agriculture Minister Chairs 93rd AGM of Indian Council of Agricultural Research Society

  • The 93rd Annual General Meeting of the ICAR Society was organized at the National Agricultural Science Centre Complex, New Delhi in March 2022.
  • Mr. Tomar underlined the establishment of the ICAR in 1929 and the pivotal role played by it through its research and technology development in creating the food and nutritional security in the country with the untiring cooperation of farmers and scientists over the years. He underlined the record production of the food grains and horticultural products in the country that has made India self-sufficient to meet not only the domestic demands enabled to supply the same to the different countries as well.

Gujarat Gets India's First 'Steel Road'

  • The Diamond City of India, Surat, became the first in India to get a road that is made out of steel waste often considered as a waste material, steel slag has been a problem area for the steel industry. The road consists of 100% processed steel slag. The 6-lane 1-kilometre long road is an experimental project that may solve the waste material issue. Slag is a by-product of smelting ores and used metals. The disposal of metallurgical and metal-processing waste in landfills is particularly hazardous for the environment. Processed steel slag aggregate exhibits great potential as a replacement for natural construction material.
  • Built by ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India with CSIR India (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research) & CRRI (Central Road Research Institute) along with the government think tank NITI Aayog, the steel slag road is a stellar example of sustainable development.

NCW Organizes Seminar on Racial Diversity Sensitization

  • National Commission for Women NCW organized a seminar in New Delhi on Racial Diversity Sensitization. It was organised in collaboration with Bureau of Police Research and Development BPR&D, National Commission for Minorities NCM and Special Police Unit for North-Eastern Region SPUNER of Delhi Police to spread awareness towards different cultures in India and to recommend strategies for strengthening mutual understanding among diverse customs.
  • NCW Chairperson Rekha Sharma stressed upon the moto of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat and said that the need of the hour is to disseminate information and exchange of culture and sensitization.

India Successfully Tests Extended Range Version of BrahMos Cruise Missile from Andaman and Nicobar Islands

  • India successfully tested a surface-to-surface BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in Andaman and Nicobar. BrahMos was recently in a controversy after a missile was misfired due to a technical malfunction from an Indian Air Force unit during a Command Air Staff Inspection (CASI).The range of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles had recently been extended to 500 km by simply upgrading the software. No changes were made to the missile.
  • The BrahMos missile has been developed in collaboration with Russia. These missiles fly at three times the speed of sound i.e. 2.8 Mach (Mach number is the ratio of an object's speed in a given medium to the speed of sound in that medium).
  • The extended range missile test firing was witnessed by Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari and other defence officials who congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on the successful test-firing of BrahMos missile.

Lt. Gen. Vinod G. Khandare Appointed Adviser in Defence Ministry

  • Khandare (retd.) was appointed as Adviser in the Ministry of Defence. He will work closely with the Defence Secretary. The mandate of the role would be to give strategic inputs and advice on affairs relating to defence policy, preparedness and related activities, including international defence corporation and maritime security and defence spaceLt. Gen. Khandare superannuated from the Army end-January 2018. From then till October 2021, he served as the Military Adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) under the Prime Minister's Office.

Former CM Of Sikkim B.B. Gurung Passes Away

  • The 3rd Chief Minister of Sikkim, Bhim Bahadur Gurung passed away at his residence in Lumsui in Gangtok, Sikkim. B. Gurung served as a teacher and a staff reporter in a Calcutta (Kolkata)-based newspaper the Amrita Bazar Patrika and he also edited the first news-based Nepali Journal of Sikkim, called Kanchenjunga.
  • Gurung started his political career with Sikkim Rajya Congress Party in 1947 and was later appointed as the General Secretary in 1958. He served as the 3rd CM of Sikkim from 11 May to 24 May 1984, the shortest term in the history of Sikkim. Between 2014 and 2015 he served as the political advisor to the CM of Sikkim.

  • The union environment ministry designated October 5 as National Dolphin Day, to be observed annually starting this year.Union environment minister Bhupender Yadav said generating awareness and community participation is integral for conservation of this dolphins, an indicator species.
  • Dolphins act as ideal ecological indicators of a healthy aquatic ecosystem and conservation of the dolphins will, therefore, benefit the survival of the species and also, the people dependent on the aquatic system for their livelihood.

  • Hollywood star Will Smith ended his dry run at the Oscars as he lifted the best actor trophy for "King Richard" minutes after he punched comedian Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.The punch will go down in the Oscars history as one of the wildest moments after the 2017's mix up when "La La Land" was mistakenly named as the best picture instead of "Moonlight".
  • The 53-year-old star was previously nominated in the same category twice -- "Ali" and "The Pursuit of Happyness" -- but couldn't go all the way.The actor came into Oscar night as a clear favourite, having collected trophies at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards and Critics' Choice Awards.

  • The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) won the 'Covid champion' award at Wings India 2022. The Covid champion award was received by CIAL Managing Director S. Suhas IAS from Civil Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia. CIAL was awarded for the successful implementation of a meticulous project named 'Mission Safeguarding' during the pandemic time to ensure safe travel at Kochi Airport.
  • The Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru won two the 'Best Airport' under the General Category and the 'Aviation Innovation' Award at the event. Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) won the 'Aviation Sustainability & Environment' award by Wings India Awards 2022 for its efficient green practices.

India Crosses Milestone of 50,000 ODF Plus Villages

  • The country crossed a milestone of 50 thousand open defecation-free(ODF) Plus villages. Among the top performing States are Telangana with 13,960 ODF Plus villages followed by Tamil Nadu & Madhya Pradesh.
  • Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen Phase-II was launched in February 2020 with the aim to ensure that all villages in the country can declare themselves as ODF Plus by 2024.

IBM India to Impart Digital Skill to 12,000 Girl Students in Nagaland

  • IBM India announced a collaboration with the Nagaland School Education department to introduce digital powered training in more than 250 secondary and higher secondary schools across 15 districts in the northeastern state.
  • The programme IBM Stem (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) for girls programme aims to provide 21st-century skills to more than 12,000 girls.
  • The curriculum will align and supplement the state's efforts towards quality education. This programme will help enable more than 12,000 girls studying between 8th to 10th grade with access to digital fluency, coding skills training, 21st century skills, including life and career skills.
  • The IBM Stem for girls programme, currently running in 12 states that include Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, Uttarakhand and Nagaland.

Not Cut-offs, Clearing Class 12, CUET Now Enough to Secure Admissions to DU

  • From the academic year 2022-23, students will only need to clear Class 12 and CUET to be eligible for admissions to Delhi University (DU).
  • The proposal to consider passing marks in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for admissions, and not the cut-offs as earlier, was passed by the varsity's executive council during its meeting.
  • The university also accepted the proposal to set up Delhi School of Analytics (DSA) under Institutes of Eminence.
  • The DSA will offer short and long-term certificate courses, diploma and degree programmes that will enhance the business analytical skills of students.
