Vladimir Putin Slaps Sanctions on Biden, Blinken

  • Russia put US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other top officials on a "stop list" that bars them from entering the country.
  • Their names, together with Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, CIA chief William Burns, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and others, were included on a list of 13 individuals banned from Russia in response to sanctions imposed by Washington on Russian officials. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was also named.

Flipkart Health+ Names Prashant Jhaveri as CEO

  • Flipkart Health+ appointed Prashant Jhaveri as its chief executive officer (CEO) to lead Flipkart's foray in the fast-growing healthcare sector in India.
  • Prior to joining Flipkart Health+ Jhaveri was the chief business officer at Apollo Health and Lifestyle Limited, where he was responsible for growth, partnerships and creating cross-functional synergies across different consumer-facing businesses and touchpoints. He also served as the chief executive officer of MediBuddy, and chief business officer for the Medi Assist Group in his earlier stints.
  • Jhaveri has over 17 years of experience in the health, health insurance and other allied healthcare sectors.

Myanmar to Initiate Rupee Convertibility for Trade along Indian Border

  • The Myanmar government intends to initiate the currency convertibility for the Indian rupee for trade along the border it shares with India, following the Southeast Asian country's agreement this month to deal in Thai baht with neighbours and the kyat-baht initiative for border trade with China.
  • The Myanmar government has agreed to accept the Thai baht as an official currency for settling border trade starting this month. Thailand is the second country after China to permit its national currency to be exchangeable with the Myanmar kyat for border trade activities.
  • Myanmar and China commenced kyat-renminbi settlement for border trades in January 2022.

Chennai to host Chess Olympiad this year after shifting out of Russia

  • Chennai will host the 44th Chess Olympiad in July this year. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) Council had decided to shift the venue of the event out of Moscow.
  • The venue will be the convention centre at the Four Points by Sheraton, located in the Mahabalipuram area, one of the main tourist destinations in southern India.
  • The International Chess Federation or FIDE approved the bid offered by the All India Chess Federation (AICF) to host the mega biennial event that would see about 190 nations competing for the medals.
  • "The exact schedule is still being discussed and will be announced in the coming days, but the event will take place between the end of July and the beginning of August, not very far off from the dates originally planned," FIDE said.

Motor Vessel Ram Prasad Bismil Becomes Longest Vessel ever to Sail on Brahmaputra River

  • The longest vessel ever to sail on river Brahmaputra was anchored at Pandu Port in Guwahati after completing its pilot run of heavy cargo movement from Haldia Dock in Kolkata.
  • The 90-metre long vessel, MV Ram Prasad Bismil, is loaded with a draft of 2.1 meter. The vessel along with two barges - DB Kalpana Chawla and DB APJ Abdul Kalam - carrying 1,793 metric tonne of steel rods was flagged off from the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Haldia by the Union Minister for Shipping, Ports and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal.
  • The pilot run laid down the path for commencement of barging operation from Kolkata to Guwahati through Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route (IBRP).

  • Bhagwant Mann took oath as the 25th CM of Punjab at Khatar Kalan, the birthplace of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Mann had announced his oath-taking ceremony date and invited the people of Punjab to attend the ceremony at Khatkar Kalan.
  • The swearing-in ceremony of Bhagwant Mann was a low-profile event with the absence of big political leaders. Mann invited Delhi Chief Minister and AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal to the oath-taking ceremony.

Sonia Gandhi Fires Navjot Sidhu, 4 other State Congress Chiefs

  • Congress president Sonia Gandhi cracked the whip for embarrassing election losses in the recent cycle, asking party chiefs Navjot Singh Sidhu in Punjab, Ganesh Godiyal in Uttarakhand, Ajay Kumar Lallu in UP, Girish Chodankar in Goa and Nameirakpam Loken Singh in Manipur to resign. Moments later, party spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said that the presidents of all five state units had resigned taking moral responsibility for the losses.
  • Sonia's firing orders for five state chiefs today is a step towards party revamp. AICC general secretaries in charge of the five states could be next in the line of fire.

Former Zambian President Rupiah Banda Passes Away

  • Former Zambian President Rupiah Bwezani Banda passed away at the age of 85.
  • Banda, Zambia's fourth President who was in power from 2008 to 2011, was diagnosed with cancer two years ago and had been receiving medical treatment.
  • Banda had held senior diplomatic posts under first President Kenneth Kaunda before being eventually namedas vice president in 2006 by then-President Levy Mwanawasa.

Uttarakhand's Rashtriya Indian Military College to Open Doors for Girl Students

  • Opening its doors for girls for the first time in its 100-year history, Dehradun-based Rashtriya Indian Military College will admit girls from the new session starting in July this year.

  • RIMC is the first military training institution of the sub-continent.
  • Inaugurated on March 13, 1922 by the then Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, to educate and train Indian youth as part of the 'Indianisation' programme of the officer cadre of the British Indian Army, RIMC has emerged as the premier feeder institute for the prestigious National Defence Academy and Naval Academy, Ezhimala.
