Georgia Vows to 'Immediately' Apply for EU Membership

  • Georgia's ruling party said that it would "immediately" put forward an application to join the European Union.
  • Irakli Kobakhidze, the chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, urged the EU to review our application in an urgent manner and to make the decision to grant Georgia the status of an EU membership candidate.
  • The Caucasian country had initially planned to apply in 2014 but reversed its stance amid pressure from the opposition and demonstrators.
  • Georgia's expected application to join the EU comes after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially applied for membership amid Russia's ongoing invasion. EU membership could bolster Ukraine's defenses against Russia and improve its economy by joining the single market.

India, Pakistan: Most Vulnerable to Climate Change

  • Extreme climatic conditions are threatening the food security in South Asia with escalated floods and droughts making India and Pakistan the most vulnerable to climate change, cautioned the latest IPCC report released.
  • If emissions are not dramatically reduced, 'wet bulb' temperatures in India, which measure both heat and humidity, will exceed 31 degrees Celsius, which is fatal for humans, according to the paper. Despite the fact that India is one of the South Asian countries with the greatest urban adaptation measures, these plans are hampered by inequitable funding and "priority," with larger cities receiving more attention.

Jet Airways Appoints Sanjiv Kapoor as CEO

  • Aviation veteran Sanjiv Kapoor was named the new chief executive officer of Jet Airways.
  • Kapoor, who has previously worked as chief operating officer at SpiceJet and chief strategy and commercial officer at Vistara, resigned as president of Oberoi Hotels.
  • Jet Airways stopped operations in April 2019. The Jalan-Kalrock consortium, comprising UAE-based entrepreneur Murari Lal Jalan and UK-based Kalrock Capital, was selected two years later to revive the airline.
  • The company appointed Sri Lankan Airlines chief Vipula Gunatileka as its chief financial officer.

T. S. Ramakrishnan is New MD and CEO of LIC Mutual Fund

  • LIC Mutual Fund appointed T. S. Ramakrishnan as its Managing Director and CEO. He succeeded Dinesh Pangtey, its former Wholetime Director and CEO.
  • Ramakrishnan has over 34 years of experience at LIC and its subsidiaries/associate companies.
  • He joined LIC Mutual Fund AMC in April 2021 before taking over as MD & CEO.
  • Before joining LIC Mutual Fund AMC, he was the Regional Manager, Western Region at LIC Housing Finance Ltd. (LICHFL) and subsequently elevated as the General Manager.

Tata Motors Launches Showroom on Wheels for Doorstep Car Buying in Rural Areas

  • Tata Motors said that it is deploying over 100 mobile showrooms across the country as part of an initiative to offer doorstep car buying experience in the rural areas. The auto major has launched Anubhav, a showroom on wheels, in line with its rural marketing strategy.
  • The initiative would help increase the company's reach in rural areas, which have high potential in terms of population and economy.
  • These mobile showrooms would help existing dealerships to offer a doorstep sales experience to customers and assist them with information about the new range of cars and SUVs, accessories, avail finance schemes, book a test drive and evaluate existing cars for exchange.
  • These mobile showrooms would be a one-stop solution for rural customers, seeking information about the company's cars, finance schemes, exchange offers etc.

UN Telecom Body ITU to Open its Area Office in New Delhi for South Asia

  • Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General Houlin Zhao signed a pact virtually to establish an area office and innovation centre of the United Nations telecom body in New Delhi. The setting up of the area office will provide greater access and engagement to India and South Asian countries in global policy and standard formation in the field of telecommunication.
  • India was a founding member of ITU when it was formed more than one-and-a-half century ago in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union but this is the first time that ITU is opening in the South Asia region with India as the host country.

NIC Tech Conclave 2022

  • Communications and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the 3rd edition of NIC Tech Conclave in New Delhi. The two-day event was organized by the National Informatics Centre NIC. Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar, was the guest of honour. The event was attended by the Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, and other dignitaries from Centre and State Governments. NIC has been organizing Tech Conclave focused on Emerging Technologies applicable especially in e-Governance. The Theme for Tech Conclave this year (2022) was "Next-Gen Technologies for Digital Government".
  • The speakers in this 2022 Conclave were from the IT industry who will share their expertise in various areas like Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Next Gen Database Solutions, Cyber Security, Future of Cloud, and various e-Governance Solutions, etc.

Russian, Belarusian Athletes Barred from Beijing Paralympics

  • Russian and Belarusian athletes were barred from the Winter Paralympics in Beijing on the eve of the Games following threats of boycotts by other teams over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) said. Belarus was a key staging area for the invasion, which was launched a week ago.
  • The decision came a day after the IPC gave athletes from the two countries the green light to participate as neutrals, saying that the governing body had followed its rules and that 'athletes were not the aggressors'. But that decision led to an outcry and threats from other countries' National Paralympic Committees (NPC) to boycott the Games.

President Ram Nath Kovind Inaugurates 'Arogya Vanam' at Rashtrapati Bhavan

  • The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind has inaugurated a newly developed 'Arogya Vanam' at the President's Estate, (Rashtrapati Bhavan) in New Delhi. The objective of this Arogya Vanam is to promote the importance of Ayurvedic plants and their effects on the human body. The concept of Arogya Vanam has been conceived with the aim of publicising the importance of Ayurvedic plants and their effects on the human body.
  • Spread in 6.6 acres, the Arogya Vanam has been developed in the shape of a human sitting in the Yoga Mudra. It consists of around 215 herbs and plants used for therapeutic purposes in Ayurveda. Some of the other features of this Vanam are water fountains, Yoga platform, water channel, lotus pond and a viewpoint. This Vanam will be now open for public viewing.

India Says All its Projects Fully Compliant with Provisions of Indus Waters Treaty

  • India and Pakistan discussed the exchange of hydrological and flood data at a meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission during which the Indian side underscored that all its projects are fully compliant with the provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty.
  • During the 117th meeting of the Permanent Indus Commission comprising Indus commissioners of India and Pakistan, held from March 1-3 in Islamabad, both sides discussed the issue of the Fazilka drain, and Pakistan assured that all necessary action will continue to be taken to ensure the free flow of Fazilka drain into the river Sutlej.
  • The Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) is a water-distribution treaty between India and Pakistan, brokered by the World Bank, to use the water available in the Indus River and its tributaries. It was signed in Karachi on 19 September 1960 by Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Pakistani President Ayub Khan.
 

R. Priya Set to be Chennai's First Dalit Mayor after Quota Rule

  • R. Priya, a Post Graduate and a Councillor from Mangalapuram is to become the next Mayor of Chennai. She would be the first Dalit Mayor of Chennai corporation after the State government in January 2022 passed an order reserving Chennai Corporation Mayor post to Dalit women.
  • She would be the third woman Mayor of Chennai after Tara Cherian and Kamakshi Jayaraman.
  • Priya was elected from ward 74, Mangalapuram from North Chennai, making her the first Mayor from North Chennai. The North Chennai area lacks in basic amenities including drinking water, electricity, connectivity, and sanitation.

IIT-Kanpur, Ordnance Factory Medak Develop India's 1st Soft Recovery System

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, (IIT-K) and Ordnance Factory Medak (OFMK), Telangana, a unit of Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited, in a joint effort developed India's first soft recovery system (SRS) for supersonic projectile.
  • The SRS bears the potential to arrest the motion of a 30 mm supersonic projectile moving at a speed of roughly Mach 3 -- three times the speed of sound within a distance of nearly 50 metres.
  • The technology was developed under leadership of Nachiketa Tiwari of IIT-K and Alok Prasad, General Manager of OFMK.
  • An SRS is used for the recovery of a projectile after initial impact with minimum damage to ensure the development of smart and intelligent warheads with maximum effectiveness and minimum collateral damage.

  • The UT administrations and the State Governments were asked to submit their entries via online mode.
  • It was decided by the Ministry to invite entries under various categories such as Best Log Hut Facility, Best Tourist Interpretation Centre, Best Cafeteria, Best MICE Facility, Best Sound and Light Show, Best Craft Haat/ Souvenir Shop facility, and Best Waterfront Development (Beach/ River/ Lake, etc.).
