Somalia PM Roble Defiant after President Farmajo Suspends Him

  • Somalia's President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has suspended the Prime Minister, who is facing allegations of involvement in the theft of land.
  • Mohamed Hussein Roble accused the President of trying to stage a coup, and said that he would continue in office.
  • He urged the security forces to take orders from him rather than Mr. Farmajo.
  • Troops loyal to the President earlier failed to block Mr. Roble from entering his office in the capital Mogadishu.
  • Somalia has not had an effective central government since the overthrow of long-serving ruler Siad Barre in 1991.

US President Joe Biden Signs $770 Billion Defence Bill

  • US President Joe Biden signed into law the National Defense Authorisation Act, or NDAA, for fiscal year 2022, which authorizes $770 billion in defence spending.
  • Earlier this month, the Senate and the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly for the defense Bill with strong support from both Democrats and Republicans for the annual legislation setting policy for the Department of Defense.
  • The NDAA is closely watched by a broad swath of industry and other interests because it is one of the only major pieces of legislation that becomes law every year and because it addresses a wide range of issues. The NDAA has become law every year for six decades.

IndusInd Bank Launches 'Green Fixed Deposits'

  • IndusInd Bank launched 'Green Fixed Deposits' where the deposit proceeds would be used to finance projects and firms supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). IndusInd Bank is amongst few banks globally, to bring forth this proposition, thereby integrating SDG into a regular fixed deposit product.
  • These deposits shall be offered to both retail and corporate customers. The Bank, will use the proceeds from these deposits to finance a wide array of sectors falling under the SDG category including, energy efficiency, renewable energy, green transport, sustainable food, agriculture, forestry, waste management, and greenhouse gas reduction.

HDFC Life Signs Bancassurance Deal with South Indian Bank

  • HDFC Life Insurance Company announced a bancassurance tie-up with South Indian Bank (SIB).
  • This bancassurance arrangement will enable customers of SIB to avail HDFC Life's life insurance products, including solutions for protection, savings and investment, retirement and critical illness.
  • HDFC Life aims to provide SIB's customer base with innovative products and superior levels of service via both the physical and digital routes.

Ashok Leyland Ties up with Shriram Auto Mall to Enter Used Vehicle Business

  • Ashok Leyland (AL) is entering the used vehicles business by tying up with Shriram Automall India Limited (SAMIL), a marketplace connecting pre-owned vehicles and equipment buyers and sellers.
  • The companies will launch a physical and digital platform for facilitating the exchange, disposal and purchase of old commercial vehicles. Ashok Leyland, the flagship company of the Hinduja group, aims to streamline the used vehicle market by leveraging its commercial vehicle digital ecosystem and partners for physical interactions in over 100 locations across India. The company aims to bring in more transparency into used vehicles business.

Second Largest in AI Talent Pool, Bengaluru Ranks Fifth in the World

  • Bengaluru emerged among the top five cities in the world for Artificial Intelligence (AI), at No. 5, according to a study by TIDE Framework and listed by Harvard Business Review (HBR).
  • The ranking is derived based on a framework of indicators such as talent pool, investments, diversity of talent, the evolution of the country's digital foundations (TIDE). The other cities topping the list are San Francisco, New York, Boston, and Seattle.
  • Bengaluru is also among the top cities on HBR's list of AI hotspots in the developing world scoring favourably on the cost of living. Other cities included Hyderabad, Jakarta, Lagos, Nairobi, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and Sao Paulo.

Trace Gas Orbiter Finds Water Ice in Martian Polar Crater

  • ESA's Trace Gas Orbiter has returned a stunning image of a 4-km- (2.5-mile) wide crater located in Vastitas Borealis, the largest lowland region of Mars.
  • Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) arrived at Mars in 2016 and began its full science mission in 2018.
  • Its key goal is to gain a better understanding of methane and other gases that are present in small concentrations in the Martian atmosphere, but nevertheless could be evidence for possible biological or geological activity.
  • The spacecraft will also provide data relay services for the second ExoMars mission comprising the Rosalind Franklin rover, when it arrives on Mars in 2023.
  • TGO is not only providing the best ever inventory of the planet's atmospheric gases, but also returning spectacular images.

Vikram Misri Appointed Deputy NSA

  • Vikram Misri, a 1989 batch Indian Foreign Service officer, who served as envoy in China amid the border dispute, was appointed as Deputy National Security Advisor in the National Security Council secretariat.
  • Misri, a seasoned diplomat, will report to national security adviser Ajit Doval. Vikram has served in various capacities at the headquarters of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as well as in the Prime Minister's Office.

Dinesh Mongia, Former India Cricketer, Joins BJP

  • Former India cricketer Dinesh Mongia joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.
  • Mongia joined the ruling party at the Centre at a function in Delhi in the presence of Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
  • This is noteworthy that former left-hand batsman was a part of the 2003 World Cup team that managed to reach the final of the marquee event under the leadership of Sourav Ganguly.
  • Besides him, sitting Congress MLAs Fateh Singh Bajwa and Balwinder Singh Laddi also joined the BJP.

Sanjay Kumar Singh Appointed Steel Secretary, V. Srinivas DARPG Secretary

  • Senior bureaucrat Sanjay Kumar Singh was appointed as Steel Secretary as part of a major top-level bureaucratic reshuffle effected by the Centre.
  • Singh, a 1987 batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, is currently Secretary, Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG) and Department of Pensions & Pensioners Welfare (DoPPW).
  • V. Srinivas, a 1989 batch IAS officer of Rajasthan cadre, will be Secretary, DARPG and DoPPW in place of Singh. He is currently Special Secretary in the DARPG.
  • Manoj Joshi, Special Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries was appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs.

Paras Defence Gets DRDO Contract for Border Surveillance Tech

  • The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) selected Paras Defence and Space Technologies for handing over the technology of border surveillance systems as developed by Instruments Research & Development Establishment and DRDO.
  • This technology has been transferred by a licensing agreement for transfer of technology (ToT) for border surveillance systems entered between the company, Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE) and Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
  • This system shall provide all weather surveillance for day and night monitoring of the border areas, it shall consist of Radar, EO sensors etc., mounted on Pan Tilt platforms. With this ToT, Paras Defence and Space Technologies shall be serving the requirement of the Armed Forces of the nation.
  • Paras Defence and Space Technologies is primarily engaged in designing, developing, manufacturing and testing of a wide range of defence and space engineering products and solutions. Its product offerings cater to four major segments of Indian defence sector i.e. defence and space optics, defence electronics, electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) protection solution and heavy engineering for defence and niche technologies.

EO Wilson, Dubbed 'Darwin's Heir', Dies

  • Edward Osborne Wilson, one of the world's leading naturalists and conservationists, died aged 92.
  • Wilson was an award-winning biologist and professor at Harvard and Duke Universities and earned the nickname of the natural heir to Charles Darwin.
  • He specialised in studying ants and ecosystems, and campaigned to halt the rapid global decline in biodiversity.
  • During his career he discovered more than 400 species of ants, and proved that ants usepheromone excretions to communicate with one another.
  • EO Wilson applied his study of ants to other organisms, including humans.

World Sangeet Tansen Festival

  • In Madhya Pradesh, the 97th edition of the World Sangeet Tansen festival started in Gwalior. A five-day World Sangeet Tansen festival starts from December 25 to December 30 in the city. The stage of the program has been constructed on the theme of the Siddhanath temple situated in Omkareshwar. Many artists not only from India but also from abroad will participate in the music festival.
  • The first seven concerts were held at the stage prepared at the mausoleum of Tansen and the tomb of Mohammad Ghaus. The eighth concert will be held on the banks of the Jhilmil River, in Behat (Birthplace of Tansen) on December 30. The last brief concert will be held at Gwalior Fort on the same day.

Tamil Nadu CM Launches 'Meendum Manjappai' Scheme

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the 'Meendum Manjappai' scheme to promote the use of cloth bags by the public and discourage the use of plastic bags. This awareness campaign on using 'yellow' cloth bag or 'manjappai' as it is called in Tamil, is aimed at encouraging the people to return to the use of this eco-friendly bag and discard the plastic bags. The state government had enforced a ban on the production, use, storage, distribution, transportation or sale of 14 types of plastics with effect from January 1, 2019.

Anukrti Upadhyay's Kintsugi Wins the Sushila Devi Award 2021

  • Anukrti Upadhyay won the Sushila Devi Award 2021 for the Best Book of Fiction for her novel 'Kintsugi', which was published by the Fourth Estate imprint. The Ratanlal Foundation and the organizing Committee of the Bhopal Literature and Art Festival announced the winner, for this notable award for fiction written by a woman author and published in 2020. This prize was instituted by the Shri Ratanlal Foundation.
  • Anukrti Upadhyay has post-graduate degrees in Management and Literature, and a graduate degree in Law. She writes in both English and Hindi. She stunned readers and critics alike with the twin novellas Daura and Bhaunri in 2019 and delighted Hindi readers with the short story collection Japani Sarai.

  • The Lobkowicz Collection is deemed to be amongst the oldest, largest and the most intact private collection in Czech Republic.
