Paytm Lending CEO Gets Additional Role to Lead Offline Payments Vertical

  • One97 Communications Limited, which owns the fintech firm Paytm, announced consolidatation of leadership of its offline payments business with lending, with an aim to increase penetration of credit to its 23 million merchants.
  • The company elevated Bhavesh Gupta, CEO, Paytm Lending to take on leadershipfor the offline payments vertical in addition to his existing responsibilities. Bhavesh has led the company's lending vertical, which has reached over $1 billion of annualised runrate of disbursals through the company's platform. Before joining Paytm, Gupta had over 22 years of experience in the financial sector with major banks like IDFC Bank, ICICI Bank.

BOB Financial Solutions Ltd. and the Indian Navy Unveil Co-branded Credit Card

  • BOB Financial Solutions Limited (BFSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Bank of Baroda (BoB), and Indian Navy launched a co-branded credit card for Indian Navy personnel.
  • The card, offered on the RuPay platform, has contactless features.
  • Indian Navy personnel can choose from 3 variants of the co-branded credit card.
  • "While the base variant will be offered as a life time free (LTF) credit card, the other two variants will be offered at very attractive joining and annual fees.

James Webb Space Telescope Has Launched

  • The James Webb Space Telescope, an international partnership between NASA, ESA and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) was launched on an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, South America. Following launch and separation from the rocket, Webb's mission operations center in Baltimore, the United States, confirmed the spacecraft deployed its solar array and is in good condition, marking the launch a success.
  • The James Webb Space Telescope, a major space observatory often presented as the successor to the very successful NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, is designed to answer fundamental questions about the Universe.

Himachal Pradesh Wins Hazare Trophy

  • Himachal Pradesh won their biggest prize in cricket with a stunning 11-run victory over the mighty Tamil Nadu in the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Youngster Shubham Arora scored his maiden List A century as HP downed five-time champions Tamil Nadu under the VJD method, winning their first limited-overs championship.
  • Tamil Nadu has been the best domestic side in the country in white-ball cricket since the 2019-20 season. After losing the finals of the one-day and T20 competitions in 2019, the team has won back-to-back titles in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, but underdogs Himachal outplayed the favourites.

SAFF U 19 Women's Championship: Bangladesh Defeat India

  • Bangladesh women team won the SAFF U 19 Women's Championship by defeating India in the final. Shaheda Akter Ripa of Bangladesh scored the maximum number of goals in the tournament. She received the 'most valuable player' award. The 2021 SAFF U-19 Women's Championship was the 2nd edition of the SAFF U-19 Women's Championship.
  • The tournament was organized from 11 to 22 December 2021 at BSSS Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Dhaka. Five countries have participated in the 2021 SAFF U-19 Women's Championship. Pakistan Football Federation was suspended by FIFA in April 2021 so it didn't participate in this competition.

Gujarat Tops Good Governance Index 2021

  • Gujarat topped the composite ranking in the Good Governance Index (GGI), followed by Maharashtra and Goa while Uttar Pradesh showed an incremental growth of 8.9 per cent in the indicators launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the occasion of the Good Governance Day 2021.
  • As many as 20 states improved their composite GGI scores in 2021, according to the index.
  • The GGI 2021 was prepared by the Department of Administration Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).

India and Russia Exchange 'Non-Paper' on Engagement in Central Asia

  • India and Russia have exchanged "Non-Paper" on how to increase engagement in central Asia, which has 5 countries--Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. The 5 countries once formed part of the Soviet Union, have huge Russian influence.
  • The non-paper or white paper is basically a document that doesn't carry a governmental seal but aims to highlight key features of discussions.
  • The non-paper has pointed at several areas of engagement, one of which is defense as India aims to become a supplier of arms in that part of the world. These central Asian countries use Russian defense equipment and India can provide parts that are made in the country.

Twenty-two Farm Bodies in Punjab Announce Political Front

  • Twenty-two farm organisations in Punjab that were part of the protest against three central farm laws formed a political front and announced they would contest the upcoming state assembly polls to give a "political change".
  • The decision in this regard was taken by representatives of these organisations.

India Gives Food Aid, Defence Equipment to Mozambique

  • India handed over two Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC) and other self defence equipment to Mozambique to assist in its capacity building as the Central African nation battles growing terror threats. Naval ship INS Kesari entered Port of Maputo in Mozambique to deliver 500 tonnes of food aid as well as the defence equipment, under the eight edition of Mission Sagar by the Navy to assist friendly foreign countries in the region.
  • These deployments were conducted in solidarity with India's extended Maritime Neighbourhood and highlights the importance accorded by India to these special relationships, 500 tonnes of food aid was shipped by INS Kesari to support the efforts of Government of Mozambique to cope with ongoing drought and concurrent challenges of pandemic.

INS Khukri Decommissioned after 32 Years of Service

  • India's first indigenously built missile corvettes, INS Khukri (P49), was decommissioned after 32 years of service at Visakhapatnam.
  • INS Khukri was built by the Mazagon Dock shipbuilders on August 23, 1989.
  • It had the distinction of being part of Western as well as Eastern Fleets.
  • In her service to Indian Navy, the ship was commanded by 28 commanding officers.
  • It traversed a distance of more than 6,44,897 nautical miles, equivalent to navigating across the world 30 times or three times the distance between the Moon and the Earth.
  • The ship was affiliated with the Gorkha Brigade of the Indian Army.

Desmond Tutu, South African Anti-apartheid Campaigner and Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Passes Away

  • Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and veteran of South Africa's struggle against white minority rule died at the age of 90.
  • In 1984 Tutu Key dates in the life of South African cleric and activist Desmond Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent opposition to apartheid. A decade later, he witnessed the ends of that regime and he chaired a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, set up to unearth atrocities committed during those dark days.
  • The outspoken Tutu was considered the nation's conscience by both Black and white, an enduring testament to his faith and spirit of reconciliation in a divided nation.

Former President of Greece Karolos Papoulias Dies

  • Veteran Greek politician Karolos Papoulias, who served as President at the height of the economic crisis of the 2010s, died at the age of 92.
  • Papoulias spent a decade as president after being elected in 2005 and again in 2010, during the crisis that plunged the country into the gravest political and economic turmoil of recent decades.
  • His popularity suffered a major blow for supporting austerity measures dictated by international lenders in return for a bailout, which sparked violent protests.

International Day of Epidemic Preparedness

  • The United Nations and World Health Organization marked December 27 as the International day for Epidemic Preparedness. Battered by the Covid-19 pandemic, humans have learned about epidemic preparedness the hard way, in a bid to prepare for future outbreaks and sensitise people about epidemics on all levels. The day was first observed in December 2020 when the United Nations General Assembly had emphasised on the need to advocate the importance of the preparedness for, prevention of and partnership against epidemics.

  • Anil Prakash Joshi Wins Mother Teresa Memorial Award
  • Environmentalist Anil Prakash Joshi, who was conferred upon the Padma Bhushan this year, has been awarded the Mother Teresa Memorial Award for Social Justice 2021. Vidyut Mohan, the winner of the Earth shot Prize, and Ridhima Pandey, a young environmental activist from Uttarakhand, were also the recipients of the award.
  • The Harmony Foundation identifies a theme each year for the Mother Teresa Memorial Awards and felicitates individuals and organisations who work in the realm of augmenting environmental sustainability. The awardees were felicitated by Dr Abraham Mathai, the founder chairman of the foundation.

Maharashtra Launches Chalo Mobile App & Smart Card for Bus Travel

  • Maharashtra Tourism and Environment Minister, Aaditya Thackeray launched the Chalo mobile application (app) and Chalo smart cards to facilitate digital and advance purchase of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus tickets. He also launched the NCMC compliant smart card of BEST as well as new fare schemes for the passengers, one that provided 10 trips at Rs. 70 and another called 'Flexifare'.
  • Chalo mobile app would allow passengers to buy online bus tickets and have access to bus passes through an e-wallet. A contract worth Rs. 85 crore has been given for the maintenance of the Chalo mobile application for six years.

Karnataka CM Announces Extension of 'Raitha Vidya Nidhi' Scheme

  • Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced extending 'Raitha Vidya Nidhi' scheme for class 8-9 girl students in view of the drop in their enrolment in rural areas.
  • A government order in this regard would be issued immediately.

IIT Guwahati Launches School of Business

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati commenced its academic activities at the newly initiated School of Business and will soon be admitting the first batch of students at its flagship programme, namely, the Masters of Business Administration (MBA).
  • The admission process for the MBA programme will open in January 2022, and the first batch is expected to commence their studies from July 2022. The admission to the MBA programme will be in line with the admission process adopted by other IITs offering MBA programmes, with the requirement of opening this programme to prospective applicants who have qualified the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2021.

Kerala Best State on Health Parameters

  • Kerala emerged as the top ranking state in terms of overall health performance among larger states, while Uttar Pradesh is the worst, according to the fourth Health Index launched by Niti Aayog. The fourth round of the Health Index took into account the period 2019-20 (reference year).
  • Tamil Nadu and Telangana emerged as the second and third best performers, respectively, on health parameters.
  • The report, however, added that Uttar Pradesh ranked at the top in terms of incremental performance by registering the highest incremental change from the base year (2018-19) to reference year (2019-20).
  • Among the smaller states, Mizoram emerged as the best performer in overall performance as well as incremental performance, while among UTs, Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir ranked among the bottom UTs in terms of overall performance but emerged as the leading performer in terms of incremental performance.
  • The report was prepared in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with technical assistance from the World Bank.

Amit Shah Inaugurates 'Bharat Darshan Park'

  • Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the 'Bharat Darshan Park' in Delhi which showcases attractive replicas of several iconic monuments of India built with scrap and waste material.
  • The recreational garden, built by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation on 'waste-to-wealth' model, was opened after some delay and ahead of the civic polls in Delhi due early next year.
  • Spread over eight acres, the park will have replicas of several monuments, including Qutab Minar, Taj Mahal, Charminar, Gateway of India, Konark Temple, Nalanda ruins, Mysore Palace, Meenakshi Temple, Hampi, Victoria Memorial Hall, Sanchi Stupa, Gol Gumbaz, Ajanta and Ellora Caves, and Hawa Mahal.
