Germany's Nuclear Phase-out to Continue Permanent Closure by Year End
Germany's nuclear phase-out will continue with the permanent closure of the country's last three nuclear reactors at the end of the year.
The operating licenses for the three nuclear power plants expire at the end of 2021, and will not be renewed. The plants will therefore go off-grid by the end of 2022 at the latest.
In the wake of the Fukushima disaster in 2011, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel launched safety inspections of all nuclear power plants. This led to an acceleration of Germany's phase-out of nuclear energy.
According to a report released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), temperatures in the Arctic last year were among the highest on record, and the region continues to see the dramatic shifts that put it at the cutting edge of climate change's effects.
The Arctic, which continues to warm at about twice the rate of the rest of the globe, saw its seventh-warmest polar year on record (from September 2020 through October) and the warmest autumn since 1900.
Central Bank of India Signs co-lending Deal with Fintech platform U GRO Capital
MSME lending fintech platform, U GRO Capital signed a co-lending agreement with Central Bank of India.
Under this partnership, the two entities aim to disburse up to Rs. 1000 crore to U GRO Capital's varied MSME segments under its programmes like Pratham, Sanjeevani, Saathi, GRO MSME and Machinery financing, in the next 12 months.
The co-lending arrangement with Central Bank of India will work towards providing formal credit to underserved MSMEs at affordable rates across all product categories of U GRO Capital.
Rupen Jhaveri Appointed Group President of Piramal Enterprises
Piramal Enterprises Limited (PEL) appointed Rupen Jhaveri as its Group President, with primary focus on financial services.
In the newly created role, Jhaveri would be responsible for business development, strategy, merger and acquisition, capital allocation and corporate finance. The appointment is effective January 24, 2022.
His appointment is following the company's announcement in October 2021 that it would demerge its financial services and pharmaceuticals operations, aimed at simplifying PEL's corporate structure and unlocking value.
Jhaveri joins PEL from global investment firm KKR, where he was a managing director at its India private equity team. Prior to joining KKR, he was with Goldman Sachs & Co in its Principal Investment Area (PIA) and Warburg Pincus in Mumbai.

E-commerce platform Snapdeal appointed Himanshu Chakrawarti as its president, firming up its leadership after filing for an initial public offering (IPO).
Chakrawarti would lead various functions at Snapdeal to drive its value commerce strategy and steer various growth-related and operational initiatives. He was the chief executive officer (CEO) of Unlimited Fashion, Arvind Lifestyle Brands' value-fashion retail chain. V-Mart Retail acquired Unlimited Fashion earlier this year, adding its nearly 75 stores in West and South India to its national footprint.
Astronomers Find at Least 70 Free-Floating Exoplanets in Nearby Star-Forming Region
Using observations and archival data from several space- and ground-based telescopes, astronomers have discovered a rich population of free-floating planets — between 70 and 170 such objects — in a nearby region of the Milky Way known as the Upper Scorpius young stellar association. This is the largest sample of such planets found in a single group and it nearly doubles the number known over the entire sky.
To date, most exoplanets have been detected through modulations induced in their host stars. As such, the vast majority of known exoplanets are gravitationally bound to stars.
These ultra-faint objects are less than about 13 Jupiter masses and are not bound to a star or brown dwarf but rather wander among them.
'Neeraj' to be Mascot for the First ever 'Kerala Olympic Games'
A rabbit mascot named Neeraj, in honour of Neeraj Chopra, the first Indian athlete to win an Olympic gold medal, will be the symbol for the first ever 'Kerala Olympic Games', slated to be held in February 2022.
State Education Minister V Sivankutty unveiled the mascot.
The meet will be conducted on 24 disciplines which includes athletics, aquatics, archery, basketball, boxing, badminton, cycling, football, wrestling, hockey, judo, karate, kambadi (Kabadi), KHO- KHO, netball, rugby, rifles (shooting), wushu, tennis, table tennis, Taekwondo, volleyball & weight lifting.
Ahead of the Games, district games will be held in all 14 districts and athletes and teams selected from this level will participate in the Kerala Olympics Games.
Former BJP MLA in Goa Carlos Almeida joined the Congress in Panaji, a day after resigning from the ruling party and the legislative Assembly, a switch over coming just a few months before polls.
Almeida joined the opposition party in presence of All India Congress Committee in-charge of Goa Dinesh Gundu Rao, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Girish Chodankar and Leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat, among others.
Almeida, who was elected to the Assembly from Vasco, became the second sitting BJP legislator to quit after Alina Saldanha.
Tri-service Exercise Carried Out in Nicobar Islands
A multi-domain tri-service exercise is currently in progress in the strategically important Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
As part of the exercise, troops of the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force were mobilised for an amphibious landing, in close co-ordination with the para drop of airborne troops.
The rapid response capability of Shatrujeet Brigade was validated wherein the paratroopers, who had moved from the mainland, executed an airborne drop in the island territory of Andamans in a realistic tactical setting under the overall command and control of Andaman and Nicobar Command, the only joint-service operational command of the defence forces of the India.
