Nicholas Burns is US Envoy to China

  • The US Senate confirmed veteran diplomat Nicholas Burns as ambassador to Beijing, filling a position vacant for more than a year despite Washington's growing focus on China.
  • The Senate reached the key 50-vote threshold to approve Burns in an ongoing confirmation that took place after Senator Marco Rubio lifted objections. The final vote was 75-18.
  • Burns, a former US ambassador to Greece and NATO, at his Senate hearing in October called China an "aggressor" in the region and vowed to "compete vigorously," while also seeking cooperation on areas such as climate change.

India, Iran and Uzbekistan Hold Discussion on Chabahar Port

  • India, Iran and Uzbekistan discussed the further development of the transit and transportation corridor centred round the Iranian port of Chabahar during a trilateral meeting on the joint use of the port on the Gulf of Oman.
  • This was the second virtual meeting of the trilateral working group on the joint use of Chabahar Port, and it was held exactly a year after the first meeting.
  • The participants underlined the important role played by Chabahar Port during humanitarian crises as well as in enhancing regional connectivity. They also took note of the increase in transit traffic between Central Asia and South Asia through the Shahid Behesti Terminal, Chabahar Port and discussed further development of transportation corridor.

HomeFirst, Union Bank of India Enter Co-lending Partnership to Offer Home Loans

  • Home First Finance Company India Ltd (HomeFirst) entered into a strategic co-lending partnership with Union Bank of India (UBI) to offer home loans to customers.
  • The partnership aims at leveraging the strengths of both entities to provide a seamless experience to retail home loan customers in the priority sector.
  • Under this partnership, HomeFirst will originate loans as per the agreed credit policy of UBI in line with the provisions of RBI's Co-Lending Model.
  • HomeFirst will retain minimum 20 per cent of the loan on its book, while 80 per cent will be on UBI's book.

India Ranking in Global Scam Report Goes up to 4th Position

  • India is the country to receive the fourth highest number of spam sales and telemarketing calls. According to Truecaller Global Scam Report 2021, all categories of sales-related calls make up a vast majority (93.5 per cent) of all incoming spam calls.
  • As per the report, over 202 million spam calls were made by just one spammer in India this year. That's over 664,000 calls every day and 27,000 calls every hour of every day.
  • Truecaller has launched its fifth edition of the annual Global Spam Report - a detailed, global study on how spam and scam affects all of us. The report, like the previous years, lists the Top 20 Countries Affected by Spam Calls in 2021.
  • Globally, Brazil retained its title of the most spammed country in the world.

Nine start-ups Chosen at KSUM Event to Boost Entrepreneurship among Women

  • A two-day event organised by Kerala Start-up Mission, selected nine start-ups for funding aimed at boosting core female participation in various businesses.
  • Women Start-up Summit 3.0, organised by Kerala Start-up Mission (KSUM), announced a grant of Rs. five lakh each to Beena P. S. (OmicsGenLifeSciences), Sonia Mohandas (Waterchips Techno Solutions), Mariyam Vidhu Vijayan (Crink), Sunitha Faizal (Celebees Technologies), Nimisha J. Vadakkan (Acemoney), Nisary Mahesh (Hubwords), Ashwathy Venugopal (Avasarshala), Jeesh Venmarath (C-DISC Technologies) and Silpa P. A. (Nanograph).
  • The hybrid meet was inaugurated by Additional Skill Acquisition Programme CMD Dr Usha Titus, IAS (retd).

ESA's Trace Gas Orbiter Finds Water in Martian Canyon System

  • Planetary researchers using the Fine Resolution Epithermal Neutron Detector (FREND) instrument onboard European Space Agency's (ESA's) Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) have found evidence for very high content of hydrogen in the soil — the mean water equivalent hydrogen value as large as 40.3 wt% — in Candor Chaos, central part of Valles Marineris.
  • TGO can look down to one meter below this dusty layer and see what's really going on below Mars' surface, and locate water-rich 'oases' that couldn't be detected with previous instruments.

Andy Flower is Head Coach of Lucknow IPL Team

  • Former Zimbabwe captain Andy Flower was appointed as the head coach of the yet-to-be-named Lucknow franchise, which will make its debut in the 2022 Indian Premier League.
  • Flower was working with Punjab Kings as assistant coach for the past two seasons.
  • The Goenka-led RP-SG Group had shelled out Rs. 7090 crore to own the Lucknow franchise.

Avani Lekhara Bags 'Best Female Debut' Honour at Paralympic Awards

  • Indian shooter Avani Lekhara won the "Best Female Debut" honour at the 2021 Paralympic Awards for her record-breaking gold medal at the Tokyo Games. The 20-year-old from Jaipur, who sustained spinal cord injury in a car accident in 2012, won the gold in the women's 10m Air Rife Standing SH1 event earlier this year. With that special feat, she had broken the Paralympic Games record besides equalling the world record.
  • She also won a bronze in the 50m Rifle Three Positions Standing SH 1 event, becoming the first Indian female to win two medals in Games' history.
  • She was also awarded Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, India's highest sporting honour, for the achievement.

Arvind Kumar Joins Software Technology Parks of India as DG

  • Arvind Kumar joined as Director General of Software Technology Parks of India. Software Technology Parks of India is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology Government of India. STPI is fuelling the culture of tech entrepreneurship and innovation in the country by launching 25 + Centres of Entrepreneurship in emerging technology domains.
  • Currently, STPI-registered units have reached IT/ITeS/ESDM exports of over Rs. 5 lakh crores. STPI is one of the largest tech incubators in India with an area of approx.13 lakh square feet spread across various Tier 1/2/3 cities. STPI is also assisting in the formulation of India BPO Promotion Scheme 2.0. Further to strengthen the electronics sector, STPI has undertaken rolling out of the Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0) Scheme.

India, Taiwan Start Talks on Free Trade Agreement

  • India and Taiwan began talks on a free trade pact and creating a semiconductor manufacturing hub in the country as part of efforts to meet the burgeoning demand for the chips needed for products ranging from cellphones to cars.
  • The two sides set up four groups earlier this year that are focusing on creating a semiconductor manufacturing hub, education and training of highly specialised manpower needed for the industry, a bilateral investment agreement and a free trade agreement.

Metro Man Sreedharan Retires from Active Politics

  • Less than a year after joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala, 'Metro Man' E. Sreedharan announced his retirement from active politics, much to the surprise of the party's state unit.
  • Celebrated as a chief architect of the Konkan Railway as well as of the Delhi and Kochi Metros, Sreedharan lost the Palakkad seat to sitting MLA Shafi Parambil by 3,859 votes in the Assembly elections in April 2021.

Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers Gets New President

  • S. P. Shukla was elected as the president of the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers (SIDM), which has been playing an active role in boosting indigenous production of military hardware.
  • He was elected to the post by the SIDM executive council for the term 2021–2023.
  • At present, Shukla is the chairman of the boards of several companies of the Mahindra Group in the defence and aerospace sector, including Mahindra Defence Systems, Mahindra Aerostructures and Mahindra Telephonics.
  • Shukla succeeded Jayant D. Patil as the SIDM president.

Minorities Rights Day in India

  • Every year, December 18 is observed as the Minorities Rights Day to uphold the right to freedom and equal opportunities for the ethnic minorities in India and create awareness about the respect and dignity of the minorities. India has faced many obstacles since the British Rule regarding basic human rights. However, these rights were safeguarded after the independence and people must be made aware of it. Thus, we celebrate Minorities Rights Day on December 18 every year.
  • The Minority Rights Day 2021 aims to uplift all the minority sections of society and back them to voice their opinion.
  • December 18 was declared as the Minorities Rights Day back in 1992 by the United Nations. The UN had adopted the statement on the individual's Rights belonging to religious or Linguistic National or Ethnic Minorities. In India, it is the responsibility of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) to carry out the events on this day. The NCM was established by the Union Government under the National Commission for Minorities Act, in 1992. It was formed on May 17 1993.
  • It evaluates the progress of the development of Minorities under the Union and States.

International Migrants Day

  • International Migrants Day is observed every year on December 18, to tackle the problem and challenges of global migration.
  • The United Nations General Assembly in the year 1999 created the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families.
  • But on December 4, 2000, keeping an account of the large and increasing migrants across the globe, December 18 was decided as International Migrants' Day.
  • The theme for the year 2021 was 'Harnessing the Potential of Human Mobility'.

World Arabic Language Day

  • World Arabic Language Day is observed globally on December 18 every year. The Arabic language is one of the pillars of the cultural diversity of mankind. It is one of the most widely used languages in the world, spoken daily by more than 400 million people. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness of the history, culture and development of the language by preparing a program of special activities and events.
  • The theme of this year's World Arabic Language Day is "The Arabic Language and Civilizational Communication", and it is considered as a call to reaffirm the important role that the Arabic language plays in building bridges of connection between people on the rise of culture, science, literature and many other fields.
  • United Nations was decided to celebrate the Arabic language on December 18, being the day on which General Assembly resolution 3190 (XXVIII) of December 18, 1973, concerned the inclusion of the Arabic language among the official and working languages of the United Nations.

Govt. Introduces Bill in LS to Amend Laws Governing CAs, Company Secretaries

  • The government introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha to amend the laws governing chartered accountants, cost accountants, and company secretaries in order to mainly strengthen the disciplinary mechanisms in place at the respective institutes.
  • Chartered accountants, cost accountants and company secretaries come under the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, the Cost and Works Accountants Act, 1959 and the Company Secretaries Act, 1980, respectively.
  • The amendments to the Acts have been proposed on the basis of recommendations made by a high-level committee that was set up by the corporate affairs ministry to examine the existing provisions in the Acts for dealing with the cases of misconduct in the three professional institutes.

IIT Roorkee Bags First Position among most Innovative Institutions as Selected by CII

  • For the second year in a row, IIT Roorkee was selected by the prestigious Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the Industrial Innovation Awards. IIT Roorkee bagged the first position under the Most Innovative Research Institutions category this year.
  • The second and third positions went to IIT Madras and the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad (INCOIS), respectively.
  • Last year, IIT Roorkee was adjudged as 'The Most Innovative Institute of the Year' for its innovation quotient.
  • The awards were announced at the 27th DST-CII Technology Summit in the presence of Dr. Srivari Chandrashekhar, Secretary, DST, Government of India and Kris Gopalakrishnan, Past President, CII and Chairman, CII Industrial Innovation Awards.
