Nicaragua cuts ties with Taiwan in favour of Beijing

  • Nicaragua has become the latest country to cut diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favour of China.
  • Taiwan said it was "deeply saddened", adding that Nicaragua had "disregarded [their] many years of friendship".
  • The decision was praised by China, which demands that any country that wants diplomatic relations with it must cut existing ties with Taipei.
  • It comes as the US State Department called for democracies to "expand engagement with Taiwan".

UN General Assembly grants Observer Status to International Solar Alliance

  • UN General Assembly has granted Observer Status to International Solar Alliance.
  • In a tweet, India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations T S Tirumurti termed the decision as historic.
  • He said, in the last six years, International Solar Alliance has become an example of positive global climate action through partnerships to benefit global energy growth and development.

Asian Development Bank approves Rs 2,645-crore loan to improve urban services in India

  • Asian Development Bank has approved a Rs 2,644.85 crore (USD 350 million) loan for India to help improve its urban services.
  • The loan supports the policies established by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to accelerate universal coverage of piped water supply and improved sanitation.
  • Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a USD 350 million policy-based loan to improve urban services in India.

India's Jhilli Dalabehera clinches gold medal at Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships

  • Indian weightlifter Jhilli Dalabehera has won the gold medal in the women's 49kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
  • The official Twitter handle of Sports Authority of India said, Dalabehera lifted the total weight of 167kg with 73kg in snatch and 94kg in clean and jerk to win the yellow metal in the 49kg category.
  • Sanket Mahadev Sargar clinched the gold medal in the men's 55kg snatch category. He lifted the weight of 113kg. With this lift, Sargar created the new snatch national record.
  • The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 is currently being held concurrently in Tashkent along with World Weightlifting Championships 2021 from December 7 to 17. India, being a Commonwealth nation is competing in both.

  • The Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh said that Decmeber 10, 2021 marks the 73rd Anniversary of the Adaptation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • As soon as the House met for the day, Mr. Harivansh said that the theme is finding solutions to the deep-rooted problems of discrimination in the country and all should work towards upholding basic human rights.

Lok Sabha Passes Bills to extend CBI, ED Directors' Tenures up to Maximum 5 years

  • Two bills were passed by Lok Sabha to extend the tenures of directors of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate up to a maximum of five years from the present two years.
  • The Central Vigilance Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2021 and the Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Bill, 2021 were passed separately by voice vote after the House rejected various amendments moved by Opposition members on the two bills.
    • Congress MPs walked out of the House, saying they were not satisfied with the reply of Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh.
