Centre-left Wins against Merkel's Party

  • According to preliminary results, Germany's centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) have narrowly won the country's federal elections, beating the party of outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel.
  • The SPD secured 25.7% of the vote, while the ruling conservative bloc gained 24.1%.
  • The Greens achieved the best result in their party's history, coming in third with 14.8% of the ballot.
  • SDP leader Olaf Scholz earlier said his party had a clear mandate to rule, as his party started to edge into the lead.
  • Exit polls predicted a dead heat, but this election has been unpredictable from the start, and the result was never going to be the end of the story. For one thing, the outgoing chancellor is going nowhere until the coalition is formed - and that may have to wait until Christmas.
  • The successor's task is to lead Europe's foremost economy over the next four years, with climate change at the top of voters' agenda.

Govt. Extends Tenure of Company Law Committee by One Year

  • The government has extended by one year the tenure of the Company Law Committee, which was constituted back in 2019.
  • The tenure of the panel, which was set up by the corporate affairs ministry in September 2019, was extended last year also.
  • The committee has the mandate for examining and making recommendations to the government on various issues related to implementation of the Companies Act and the Limited Liability Partnership Act.

CAG Murmu Becomes External Auditor of International Atomic Energy Agency

  • India's Comptroller and Auditor General G. C. Murmu was selected as the external auditor of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a prestigious institution that promotes peaceful use of nuclear energy.
  • Murmur received majority support of the IAEA general conference and his tenure will be for six years, from 2022 to 2027.
  • Murmu assumed office as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India on August 8 last year. Before assuming the charge, he served as the first Lt Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

HAL Signs Pact with Alliance Air for Deployment of Civil Do-228 Aircraft

  • State-run aerospace behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) signed a lease agreement with Alliance Air Aviation Limited for the supply of two Civil Do-228 aircraft for regional operations in Arunachal Pradesh, aimed at giving boost to India's Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS).
  • The HAL Do- 228 is a versatile aircraft well-suited for operations in the North East and has the capabilities of short take-off and landing, ability to land and take-off from semi-prepared runways.
  • This development opens a new vista in civil aviation for HAL as the company is keen to increase its footprint in the regional civil aviation sector.

Apple Co-founder Steve Wozniak Launches Space Start-up Privateer

  • Apple's co-creator Steve Wozniak has launched a new space start-up called Privateer Space, bringing potential competition to a field dominated by billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson. Privateer was represented at the Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies Conference in Hawaii.
  • The global space economy, which has attracted many top companies such as Tesla and Amazon, involves various activities such as research and development, space tourism and the utilisation of space. Bank of America predicts the space economy will have more than tripled in size by 2030, with a $1.4 trillion market value.
  • Mr. Wozniak co-founded Apple Computers in 1976 with fellow college dropout Steve Jobs and businessman Ronald Wayne.
  • Jobs and Mr. Wozniak left Apple in 1985 though they remained shareholders and Jobs later returned to the company.
  • In 2002, Mr. Wozniak co-founded another company called Wheels of Zeus (WoZ) with Mr. Fielding. WoZ worked on global positioning system smart tags and was disbanded in 2006.

Sania Wins in Women's Double of Ostrava Open

  • Indian tennis player Sania Mirza won her first title of the season as she and her Chinese partner Shuai Zhang beat the pair of Kaitlyn Christian and Erin Routliffe in the women's doubles final of the Ostrava Open.
  • The second seeded Indo-Chinese duo defeated the third seeded pair of American Christian and New Zealander Routliffe 6-3 6-2 in the summit clash.

Jyothi Wins Silver at World Archery Championship

  • Jyothi Surekha Vennam bagged a silver medal in the women's compound event at the ongoing World Archery Championship in Yankton.
  • World number three Sara Lopez of Colombia defeated Jyothi 146-144 in the summit clash.
  • The Indian archer had defeated Andrea Becerra of Mexico 148-146 to enter her third finals of the tournament.
  • Earlier, the Indian women's and mixed compound teams managed to win silver medals at the ongoing Archery World Championships in Yankton.
  • India women's team comprising Jyothi, Muskan Kirar and Priya Gurjar suffered a defeat at the hands of Colombia's Sara Lopez, Alejandra Usquiano and Nora Valdez. Colombia defeated India 229-224.

Punjab Cabinet Expansion

  • The oath-taking ceremony of Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi-led Punjab cabinet took place at the Raj Bhawan and saw the induction of new faces.
  • As of now, Congress MLAs Brahm Mohindra and Manpreet Singh Badal, Tript Singh Bajwa, Aruna Chaudhary, Sukhbinder Sarkaria, and Rana Gurjeet Singh took oath as Cabinet ministers in the Channi-led Punjab Government, at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh.
  • They were administered the oath of the office of by Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

Yogi Inducts Seven New Ministers

  • Jitin Prasada, who switched from the Congress to the BJP was inducted in the Yogi Adityanath cabinet while six others took oath as ministers of state.
  • Jitin Prasada was allotted the technical education portfolio.
  • The expansion of the council of ministers took place as the BJP prepares for the assembly elections in the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh early next year.
  • The oath was administered by Governor Anandiben Patel at a function in the Gandhi auditorium in the Raj Bhavan in the presence of the Chief Minister.
  • The new MoS are Paltu Ram, Chhatarpal Gangwar, Sangeeta Balwant Bind, Dharamveer Prajapati, Sanjeev Kumar Gaur and Dinesh Khatik.

PM Launches Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, under which a digital health ID will be provided to people that will contain their health records, and asserted that it has the potential to bring revolutionary changes in healthcare.
  • In his address after the launch, Modi said that the mission marks a new phase in efforts of the last seven years to strengthen health facilities.
  • The pilot project of the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission was announced by the Prime Minister on August 15, 2020.
  • Currently, Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission is being implemented in a pilot phase in six union territories.

Lt. Gen. Khanduri is Next Western Command Chief

  • Lieutenant General Nav K Khanduri was appointed as the next General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Chandimandir-based Western Command.
  • He is the first officer from the Army Air Defence to be elevated to the rank of Army Commander. Lt Gen Khanduri will take over from Lt. Gen. RP Singh who superannuates on October 31.
  • Earlier, Lt. Gen. Khanduri has served as the General Officer Commanding, 33 Corps in the north-east and as Director-General of Operational Logistics and Strategic Management, at Army Headquarters. Commissioned in December 1983, he is an alumnus of the Rashtriya Indian Military College and the National Defence Academy.

Pakistan, China Launch Joint Anti-terror Exercise

  • Troops from China and Pakistan launched a joint anti-terror exercise as part of SCO Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS).
  • The opening ceremony of the Joint Anti-Terrorist Exercise (JATE)-2021 was held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) Pabbi in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.
  • JATE was conducted with a view to practice and master various drills and procedures involved in Counter Terrorism operations including Cordon & Search, Compound Clearance, Close Quarter Battle and medical evacuation.
  • The exercise is aimed at enhancing synergy and interoperability among Special Services and Law Enforcement Agencies of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member countries for combating international terrorism, practice mechanisms to respond to a crisis situation and capacity building of the forces.

Women's Rights Activist Kamla Bhasin Passes Away

  • Eminent women's rights activist, poet and author Kamla Bhasin passed away. She was 75.
  • Bhasin has been a prominent voice in the women's movement in India and other South Asian countries.
  • Kamla Bhasin's death is a big setback for the women's movement in India and the South Asian region.

Golgo 13: Manga Creator Takao Saito Passes Away

Manga artist Takao Saito, who created the longest-running Japanese comic book series of all time, died aged 84.
Saito's best-known work was Golgo 13, the tale of a professional hitman, first published in 1968 and later adapted into games and films.
Its 201st edition came out in July 2021, breaking the Guinness world record for the most volumes ever published of a single manga series.
Born in western Japan in 1936, Saito had his first manga cartoon published in 1955, while he was working as a barber.
The success of another of his works, 1960's Typhoon Goro, led him to move from Osaka to Tokyo and launch his own production company.

World Tourism Day

  • UNWTO was established on this day in 1980 to create awareness on how tourism affects social-cultural, political and economic values globally and the role of tourism within the international community.
  • World Tourism Day is observed every year on September 27 to mark the anniversary of the adoption of the Statutes of the Organization in 1970, paving the way for the establishment of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is a United Nations' agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.
  • The theme for World TOurism Day 2021 was 'Tourism for Inclusive Growth.' 

QUAD Leaders' Summit 2021

  • The first in-person meeting of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) of India, Australia, the United States and Japan, was held in Washington.
  • The meeting was participated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with leaders of the US, Japan, and Australia. US President Joe Biden is hosting all of them at the White House.
  • During the meeting, leaders also agreed to keep a careful eye on Pakistan, as its historic rival has been an instigator of trouble in Afghanistan.
  • PM Modi shared concerns regarding extremist elements in Afghanistan.
  • QUAD is a strategic dialogue between India, United States, Japan and Australia. This dialogue was initiated in 2007 by Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe. It was paralleled by joint military exercise called 'Exercise Malabar'.

NCERT Joins Hands with Tech Avant-Garde, Microsoft for Digital Skills in School Education

  • India's National Council of Educational Research & Training (NCERT) and Tech Avant-Garde (TAG), Microsoft's Global Training Partner signed an agreement to collaborate for enhancing digital skills among the stakeholders of education so as to facilitate a Connected Learning Community (CLC).
  • NCERT, Tech Avant-Garde and Microsoft will collaborate to enhance Digital Transformation and Holistic Learning (DTHL) in education, as per Digital India Campaign and National Education Policy (NEP), 2020.
  • TAG will provide Microsoft course content in the format shared by NCERT under the license CC-by-NC-SA. Certificate for the course will be jointly offered by NCERT and Microsoft/TAG as per NCERT format.

Goa, Jaipur Set to Become India's Top Leisure Destinations

  • As the population across the world continues to get vaccinated, travellers have begun boarding flights and checking into hotels among a lot more movement.
  • OYO released the findings of its Unlocking Travel Report 2021 on the occasion of World Tourism Day.
  • In India, Goa, followed by Jaipur, Manali, Ooty and Mysore are set to become India's top leisure destinations for the upcoming holiday season. The booking data shows an inclination towards hill stations, followed by heritage cities and beach destinations.
  • According to OYO's consumer survey, 37 per cent travellers have a preference for mountains, and 33 per cent for beaches in India.
  • The remaining 14 per cent prefer visiting motorable places (or roadtrips), followed by heritage cities and pilgrimages.
