Beijing Seeks to Join an Asia-Pacific Trade Deal Donald Trump Left
Beijing has applied to join an Asia-Pacific trade pact once pushed by the U.S. as a way to isolate China and solidify American dominance in the region.
China submitted a formal application letter to join the deal, known officially as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.
The treaty was originally envisioned by the U.S. as an economic bloc to counterbalance China's growing power, with then-President Barack Obama saying in 2016 that the U.S., not China, should write the regional rules of trade. His successor Donald Trump pulled out of the deal in 2017, with Japan leading the revised and renamed pact to a successful conclusion the following year.
Firefighters Wrap Base of World's Largest Tree to Save from Wildfire
Firefighters wrapped the base of the world's largest tree in a fire-resistant blanket in an attempt to protect it from a wildfire burning in California's Sierra Nevada region.
General Sherman, which is the largest in the world by volume at 1,487 cubic meters, is in Sequoia National Park's Giant Forest in a grove of around 2,000 gigantic old-growth sequoias.
Some other sequoias, the Giant Forest Museum and other buildings were also wrapped for protection.
FM Nirmala Sitharaman Announces over Rs. 30,000 cr Guarantee for Bad Bank
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a formal government guarantee on the securities receipts that the planned 'bad bank' will issue to banks as it takes on non-performing assets from their books. The government guarantee will be Rs. 30,600 crore.
The Union Cabinet had cleared a proposal to provide government guarantee to security receipts issued by the National Asset Reconstruction Company (NARCL) as part of resolution of bad loans.
NARCL proposes to acquire stressed assets of about Rs 2 trillion in phases within extant regulations of RBI. NARCL will pay up to 15 per cent of the agreed value for the loans in cash and the remaining 85 per cent would be government-guaranteed security receipts.
RBI Nod to Special Committee to Oversee Operations at Ujjivan SFB
The Reserve Bank has given its go-ahead to Ujjivan Small Finance Bank (SFB) to form a special committee of directors to oversee operations in the absence of an MD and CEO.
Last month, the Bengaluru-based company had appointed old hand Carol Furtado to take charge as officer on special duty (OSD) till September 30, 2021, following the resignation of Nitin Chugh as MD and CEO.
Furtado has been associated with Ujjivan SFB since inception and has spearheaded the organisation on numerous occasions, playing critical roles.
Kotak Mahindra Acquires Vehicle Financing Portfolio of Volkswagen Finance
Kotak Mahindra Bank announced the acquisition of German carmaker Volkswagen's captive vehicle finance business.
The deal involves the private sector lender's in-house NBFC Kotak Mahindra Prime acquiring the passenger car and two-wheeler portfolio, while Kotak Mahindra Bank Limited (KMBL) will acquire the commercial vehicles portfolio from Volkswagen Finance (VF).
With Ravi Shastri's tenure as Team India's head coach coming to an end after the T20 World Cup in UAE and Oman, former India spinner Anil Kumble is likely to return for a second term in that position.
Kumble is currently working with IPL franchise Punjab Kings and was the head coach of Team India for a year until 2017 before stepping down from the position. The spinner had then decided to quit after reports of differences between him and captain Virat Kohli emerged, with the former even expressing shock upon learning that the skipper had reservations with his style. He had then guided India to the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy, which the Men In Blue lost against Pakistan.
Supreme Court Collegium Clears 8 for Elevation as CJs
The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended eight names for appointment as the Chief Justices of the Allahabad, Calcutta, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telengana, Meghalaya, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh High Courts.
Led by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, the three-member Collegium is said to have also recommended the transfer of 5 Chief Justices and 28 other HC judges.
Calcutta High Court Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal has been recommended for appointment as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.
Justice Prakash Srivastava (MP HC), Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra (Chhattisgarh HC) and Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi (Allahabad HC) have been recommended for appointment as Chief Justices of the Calcutta, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka High Courts, respectively.
Justice Satish Chandra Sharma (Acting CJ of the Karnataka HC), Justice Ranjit V More (Bombay HC), Justice Aravind Kumar (Karnataka HC) and Justice RV Malimath (Karnataka HC) have been recommended for appointment as Chief Justices of the Telangana, Meghalaya, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh High Courts.
US President Joe Biden administration has announced a new trilateral security partnership for the Indo-Pacific. Security partnership was done between Australia, United Kingdom and United States.
This security grouping called AUKUS will focus towards advancing strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region.
Officials noted that the trilateral grouping was security focused and is different but complementary to arrangements like the Quad.
The central feature of this partnership comprises of a trilateral 18-month effort in order to help Australia in acquiring nuclear powered submarines which are quieter, more capable as compared to their conventional counterparts.
AUKUS will also involve a new architecture of meeting and engagements between three countries.
It also involves the cooperation across emerging technologies like AI, quantum technologies as well as undersea capabilities.

36th International Coastal Clean-up Day
The 36th International Coastal Clean-up Day was celebrated on September 18, 2021.
The day was celebrated by the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) at Visakhapatnam.
As part of the day, ENC carried the Coastal Clean-up Drive at Yarada Beach, Bheemili Beach and other sea fronts in the premises of Naval units of Visakhapatnam.
The clean-up drive was launched with the aim of creating awareness among people to keep beaches clean, safeguarding our environment and inculcating the habit of respecting the coastlines which ultimately nurtures the marine biodiversity.
The day is traditionally held on the third Saturday of September. In 2021, this day was observed on September 18.
International Coastal Clean-Up Day 2021 was celebrated under the theme: "Keep trash in the bin and not in the ocean".
The International Coastal Clean-up was started by the Ocean Conservancy in 1986.
Indian Railways Launches "Rail Kaushal Vikas Yojana"
Indian Railways took a leap in advancement of Skill India Mission by launching the "Rail Kaushal Vikas Yojana (RKVY)" under the aegis of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)".
RKVY was launched by Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw.
This Mission will provide Railways an entry level training in industry relevant skills with the help of 75 Railway training institutes across India.
Under RKVY, training will be provided to 50000 candidates in a period of three years. In the initial phase, training will be provided to 1000 candidates. Youth will be trained in four trades namely, Electrician, Welder, Machinist and Fitter. Mission comprises of initial basic training of 100 hours. In later phases, zonal railways will add other trades to the training programs. Youth will be trained for free and participants will be selected from applications received online, on the basis of marks in matriculation. Candidates who are 10th passed and between 18-35 years shall be eligible to apply.
Three NIELIT Centres of Northeast State Inaugurated
Union Minister of State for Electronics & Information Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, inaugurated three National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT) centres of northeast states.
One of the NIELIT centres was inaugurated in Churachandpur district of Manipur, physically. While, two other centres were inaugurated in Kokrajhar and Tezpur districts of Assam.
On the occasion, two existing centres at Imphal & at Aizawl districts of Mizoram were upgraded.
Minister noted that, NIELIT centre in Churachandpur district, these NIELIT centres would be soon be acting as job creation centres with the collaboration of Centre and States.
These centres will not just be training centres but these are centres to skill the youth and get them into the runway of opportunity and jobs.
IIT Guwahati Launches New Centre for Intelligent Cyber Physical Systems
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati launched the Centre for Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (CICPS), aimed at developing indigenous technologies. The centre will target developing a minimum of five technologies a year. These technologies will be developed indigenously and will generate direct and indirect employment opportunities.
As many as 13 PhD students and 18 MTech students have already joined the CICPS and these students will particularly work on the technologies for underwater exploration. The TIH – IIT Guwahati will fund the centre for the first five years, after which the centre is intended to become self-sustaining.
The foundations of Iron Age houses and a host of Roman coins were among discoveries made during the construction of a new bypass.
The finds resulted from archaeological digs at the site of the A120 Little Hadham bypass in Hertfordshire.
The digs took place after surveys showed prehistoric and Roman remains were likely to be found.
Sarah Cobain, leading the project, said that such discoveries gave great insight into life 2,000 years ago.
The archaeologists discovered the foundations of Iron Age houses dating back to 300BC, along with Roman remains dating to the 1st and 4th centuries AD.
Among these was a small cemetery which included the remains of four burials and 16 cremations.
A collection of 72 Roman bronze coins was also found, dating back to between AD330 and AD348.
