Taliban Says China will Maintain its Embassy in Afghanistan

  • Taliban spokesman said that China has promised to keep its embassy in Afghanistan open and to increase humanitarian aid to the war-ravaged country.
  • Abdul Salam Hanafi, a member of the Islamist group's political office in Doha, Qatar, held a phone conversation with Wu Jianghao, Deputy Foreign Minister of the People's Republic of China.
  • The Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister said that they would maintain their embassy in Kabul, adding our relations would beef up as compared to the past. Afghanistan can play an important role in security and development of the region.

China Welcomes Russia's Plan for 'Extended Troika' Meeting in Kabul

  • China reacted positively to a Russian proposal to convene a meeting of the "Extended Troika" on Afghanistan in Kabul, the first such conference since the Taliban seized power last month.
  • Russia plans to convene a new meeting of the "Extended Troika" on Afghanistan in Kabul after the resumption of commercial flights.
  • The new meeting of the Extended Troika, includes Russia, the United States, China and Pakistan.

Sri Lanka Declares Food Emergency as Forex Crisis

  • Sri Lanka has declared a state of emergency as the food crisis worsened after private banks ran out of foreign exchange to finance imports. With the country suffering a hard-hitting economic crisis, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa ordered emergency regulations to counter the hoarding of sugar, rice and other essential foods. The Sri Lankan rupee has fallen by 7.5% against the US dollar this year.
  • Rajapaksa has named a top army officer as "Commissioner General of Essential Services to coordinate the supply of paddy, rice, sugar and other consumer goods". The move followed sharp price rises for sugar, rice, onions and potatoes, while long queues have formed outside stores because of shortages of milk powder, kerosene oil and cooking gas.

Reliance Retail Ventures Acquires Sole Control of Just Dial

  • Billionaire Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Retail has acquired sole control of 25-year-old search and discovery firm Just Dial. The firm's subsidiary Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd had in July announced a deal to buy a controlling stake in Just Dial for Rs. 3,497 crore.
  • Just Dial offers local search and e-commerce services through its website, mobile apps and telephone line. From local plumbers to hotels and housekeeping services can be inquired about by just dialling 8888888888.
  • RRVL will now make an open offer to buy a 26 per cent stake from other shareholders of Just Dial.

IRB Infrastructure Developers Wins Highways Project Order

  • IRB Infrastructure Developers Ltd (IRB) has won the bid for the construction of six lanes of 20 km Pondavakkam to Kannigaipair stretch on the upcoming Chittoor Thachur Highways in Tamil Nadu at a cost outlay of Rs. 909 crore.
  • The project is under Package-IV and is a part of India's ambitious Bharatmala Pariyojana.

RIL Arm Buys Majority Stake in Strand Life Sciences

  • Reliance Industries Ltd said that its subsidiary has acquired majority stake in genomic testing frim Strand Life Sciences Pvt Ltd for Rs. 393 crore.
  • The acquisition by Reliance Strategic Business Ventures Ltd (RSBVL) is part of Reliance's digital health intiatives.
  • Strand was incorporated in India in October 2000. It is a pioneer of genomic testing in India with bioinformatics software and clinical research solutions to healthcare providers, including clinicians, hospitals, medical devices manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies.

Samsung Emerges as India's No. 1 Smartwatch Brand

  • Samsung emerged as India's biggest smartwatch manufacturer in the second quarter ending June 2021.
  • According to International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Wearable Device Tracker, Samsung's smartwatch shipments registered 860 per cent year-on-year growth, catapulting the company to number one position in India.
  • Riding on the popularity of Galaxy Watch Active 2 and Watch 3 Series, Samsung ended the June quarter with 41.2 per cent volume market share.

Tokyo Paralympics: Archer Harvinder Singh Wins Bronze

  • Harvinder Singh notched up India's first ever archery medal in the Paralympics, holding his nerves to down Kim Min Su of Korea in a thrilling shoot-off for the men's individual recurve bronze in the ongoing Games.
  • World No.23 Singh was the first athlete from India to win a gold medal at a major para competition in the 2018 Asian Games. An economics scholar from the Punjabi University, Patiala, Singh collected three shoot-off wins on the day starting with his triumphs in the opening rounds.

Jaishankar, Slovenian President Discuss Indo-Pacific, Afghanistan Crisis

  • External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Slovenian President Borut Pahor and discussed key challenges facing India and the European Union (EU).
  • Slovenia holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union.
  • Jaishankar is in the central European nation as part of his four-day visit to Slovenia, Croatia and Denmark to boost bilateral ties and strengthen India's cooperation with the EU.
  • Jaishankar also met with Slovenian counterpart Anze Logar during which the two leaders exchanged views on Afghanistan and the Indo-Pacific.

Tunnel Reaching Red Fort Discovered at Delhi Legislative Assembly

  • A tunnel-like structure was discovered at the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
  • Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel said that the tunnel connects the legislative assembly to Red Fort and was used by the Britishers to avoid reprisal while moving freedom fighters.
