Nepal Government to Forms Committee to Study Nepal's Border Issue with China

  • The Nepal government led by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba decided to form a committee to study the border issue with China in Humla district of Nepal.
  • Last year, in the month of September, China encroached upon Nepalese territory and constructed nine buildings in border area from Limi Lapcha to Hilla in Namkha village municipality of Humla district.
  • A committee comprising Department of Survey, Nepal Police, Armed Police and Border Experts will be formed under the coordination of Home Ministry Joint Secretary to study the problems in the border area in Humla district.

Japan's PM Suga Won't Run in Next Vote to Lead Party

  • As per reports, Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga won't run for governing party leadership election, indicating he will step down as Japanese leader at the end of this month.
  • This means Japan is likely to have a new leader who is elected as head of LDP, due to the party's majority in the parliament.
  • Mr. Suga has faced criticism and nose diving support ratings over slow coronavirus measures and holding the Olympics despite the public's health concerns.

Atul Bhatt News CMD of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd

  • Atul Bhatt has been appointed as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of disinvestment-owned steel company Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL).
  • Bhatt was the CMD of state-owned consultancy firm MECON, which offers a full range of services required to set up a project from concept to commissioning including turnkey execution.
  • In June the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) had recommended Bhatt's name for the post of CMD of RINL.
  • P. K. Rath retired as CMD RINL in May, after serving the company for 38 years.
  • Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd, (abbreviated as RINL), also known as Vizag Steel, is a government owned steel producer based in Visakhapatnam, India. It is under the ownership of Ministry of Steel , Government of India . RINL is the government entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP), India's first shore-based integrated steel plant built with state-of-the-art technology.
  • When founded in 1982, RINL was wholly owned by the Government of India. In November 2010, the company was granted the Navratna status by the government.
  • Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd has P. V. Sindhu ,the ace badminton player as its brand ambassador since 2016.

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India Commissions 6 Million Tonne Pellet Plant

  • ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, commissioned its second six million tonne pellet plant, taking the total capacity at Paradeep complex in Odisha to 12 million tonnes, making it the largest single-location pelletisation complex in India.
  • AM/NS India's total pelletisation capacity now stands at 20 million tonnes with 12 million tonnes at Paradeep and eight million tonnes at Vishakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and South Africa Launch CBDC Scheme

  • Central banks in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and South Africa launched a Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC) Scheme.
  • CBDC scheme is a cross border payments trial that uses different central bank digital currencies (CBDC) in order to assess if this allows transactions to be settled in a cheap and easy manner.
  • Many governments and central banks across the world are exploring the use of CBDCs.
  • CBDCs are digital forms of existing currencies.
  • Countries like China, are trialling retail-focused CBDCs that have been designed to replicate cash in circulation.
  • Other countries are considering using wholesale CBDCs in order to improve the internal workings of financial systems.

NASA's Perseverance Rover Successfully Collects First Rock from Mars

  • NASA's newest Mars rover has successfully collected its first rock sample for return to Earth, after last month's attempt came up empty.
  • The Perseverance rover's chief engineer, Adam Stelzner, called it a perfect core sample.
  • A month ago, Perseverance drilled into much softer rock, and the sample crumbled and didn't get inside the titanium tube. The rover drove a half-mile to a better sampling spot to try again. Team members analyzed data and pictures before declaring success.

Tokyo Paralympics: Praveen Kumar Clinches Silver in Men's T64 High Jump

  • India's Praveen Kumar clinched the silver medal in the men's high jump T64 event of the Paralympics, taking the country's haul to 11 in the ongoing Games in Tokyo. Kumar competing in his debut Paralympics, set a new Asian record with a 2.07 m jump to finish behind Great Britain's Jonathan Broom-Edwards, who notched up his season's best of 2.10 m for the gold.
  • The bronze went to Rio Games champion Maciej Lepiato of Poland who produced an effort of 2.04 m. T64 classification is for athletes with a leg amputation, who compete with prosthetics in a standing position.

Tokyo 2020: China's Armless Swimmer Zheng Tao Dominates with Four Golds

  • Chinese para-swimmer Zheng Tao has won the internet after shattering records and winning four gold medals at the Tokyo Games - despite having no arms.
  • Zheng, who lost his arms to an electric shock as a child, dominated with wins in freestyle, backstroke and butterfly.
  • All of his individual victories have been world or Paralympic records.
  • His 50 m freestyle final, a Games record, was particularly celebrated on Chinese social media as it also marked the country's 500th summer Paralympic gold since the country first competed at the 1984 Games in New York City.
  • He took up the sport at the age of 13, and made his international swimming debut six years later at the World Championships in the Netherlands.
  • He then went on to win his first Paralympic gold at London 2012 in the 100m backstroke event.

Assam to Drop 'Rajiv Gandhi' from National Park's Name

  • The Assam cabinet decided to remove the name of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi from the Orang National Park.
  • During an interaction between Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and prominent members of the Adivasi and tea-tribe community, they had demanded removal of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's name from the Orang National Park.
  • Since the name Orang is associated with the sentiments of the Adivasi and tea-tribe community, the cabinet has decided to rename the Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park as Orang National Park.
  • Located on the North Bank of Brahmaputra River in the Darrang and Sonitpur districts of Assam, Orang National Park spread over 78.80 sq km is the oldest forest reserve in the state. It was named a wildlife sanctuary in 1985 and declared a national park in 1999.
  • In August 2005, the Congress government headed by Tarun Gogoi had decided to rename Orang National Park after the late Prime Minister despite resistance from local groups.

Ladakh Adopts State Animal and Bird

  • Ladakh adopted two endangered species, snow leopard and black-necked crane, as state animal and state bird, two years after it was carved out as a separate Union Territory (UT) from the erstwhile state of J&K.
  • As per an order issued by the Lieutenant Administration (LG) of Ladakh, the snow leopard (Panther unica) and black-necked crane (Grus nicricollis) shall be the state animal and state bird respectively of the UT of Ladakh from the date of issue of the notification.
  • Black-necked crane, only found in Ladakh region, was the State bird of J&K before August 5, 2019.
  • Black-necked crane and snow leopard are two endangered species and the pride of Ladakh.

Dr. Balasubramanian Venkatraman is New Director of IGCAR

  • Dr. Balasubramanian Venkatraman, a veteran scientist with a research career spanning 37 years has taken over as Director of the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. A pioneer in the field of nuclear research, the spinoffs of his scientific work has been used in diverse domains such as space, defence, medicine, art, archaeology among others.
  • IGCAR was established in the year 1971, under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. The centre is engaged in broad based multidisciplinary programme of scientific research and advanced engineering directed towards the development of Fast Breeder Reactor technology.

Three Vendors Submit Final Offers for Multibillion-dollar Czech Armored-vehicle Race

  • The Czech Ministry of Defence has received three offers in its tender to acquire 210 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) for the country's land forces.
  • The confirmed bidders include the UK's BAE Systems with the Swedish-made CV90, Europe-based General Dynamics European Land Systems with its Ascod, and Germany's Rheinmetall with the Lynx.
  • In what could become the largest defense contract in the Czech Republic's history, Prague aims to spend about CZK 52 billion (US$2.4 billion) on new IFVs which will replace the military's outdated BVP-2 vehicles.

India's 1st N-missile Tracking Ship Dhruv to be Launched

  • National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is expected to commission India's first satellite and ballistic missile tracking ship Dhruv from Visakhapatnam this month. Built by Hindustan Shipyard in collaboration with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), INS Dhruv has the capability to also map ocean beds for research and detection of enemy submarines.
  • The nuclear missile tracking ship will be manned by Indian Navy personnel with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC). Such ships are operated by France, the US, the UK, Russia, and China only.

Former RS Member Chandan Mitra Passes Away

  • Veteran journalist and former Rajya Sabha member Chandan Mitra died after a long ailment. He was 65.
  • Mitra did a stint in various newspapers, including the Times of India and Hindustan Times, in his long career as a journalist before he became the Editor of The Pioneer.
  • Mitra started his journalism career with The Statesman in Kolkata. He joined The Pioneer, which he headed editorially for around 24 years, after stints at The Times of India, Sunday Observer and Hindustan Times newspapers.

Alejandro Prieto Wins Bird Photographer of the Year 2021

  • Mexican photographer Alejandro Prieto has emerged as the winner of the Bird Photographer of the Year (BPOTY) 2021. He has won for capturing a photograph of a greater roadrunner staring up at the barbed-wire-clad border wall between the USA and Mexico, with what almost looks like a sense of bewilderment.
  • The image has been given the title as 'Blocked'. The Bird Photographer of the Year comes with a cash prize of £5,000. He was chosen from among 22,000 entries from 73 countries.

J-K LG Sinha Inaugurates 'Saath' Initiative for Women Associated with SHGs

  • Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched Rural Enterprises Acceleration Programme titled 'Saath' for Self Help Group (SHG) women.
  • There are 48000 SHGs in Jammu and Kashmir. Four lakh women are connected to these SHGs. This Saath initiative will stress on mentoring and market linkages of products created by these women. It is our aim to create 11000 more SHGs in the coming year. This will transform the lives of these women and make them independent and strong in social and financial aspects.
  • Saath is aimed at accelerating livelihoods of rural women, associated with SHGs and which are doing small works. There is not much profit in their work and there is a lack of knowledge about marketing, packaging and branding. This initiative aims to teach women such skills and convert their businesses into Higher Order Enterprises.

The World University Rankings 2022

  • The Times Higher Education (THE) announced the results of The World University Rankings 2022 with the UK's University of Oxford, which led the way in the global search for a Covid-19 vaccine – retaining top spot for an impressive sixth consecutive year. A record 1,662 universities from 99 countries and regions appear in the table with Azerbaijan, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Fiji and Palestine all represented for the first time.
  • The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, is India's best-ranked institution, maintaining its position in the 301-350 band for a third consecutive year. As a result, India is home to 35 of the world's top 1000 universities, its second-highest total ever in the rankings (36 in The World University Rankings 2020). IIT Ropar was ranked in the top 351-400 bracket, while IIT Indore was in the 401-450 bracket.

TOURISM AND HOTEL INDUSTRY AWARENESS

Uttarakhand: Post-Covid Relief to People in Tourism Sector

  • The Uttarakhand government has given over Rs. 3.66 crore so far as part of a relief package to people in the tourism sector in view of the financial setback caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Under the relief package announced by the state government for the tourism sector Rs. 3,66,37,580 have been transferred directly to the accounts of 9,398 people till August 31 across the state.
  • An amount of Rs. 2,000 per month is being paid under the package to employees of hotels, restaurants and home stays that are registered with the tourism department.
  • Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had announced a package of Rs. 200 crore for the tourism sector soon after taking over.
