Russia Fines Google 3 Million Roubles

  • Russia fined Google 3 million roubles ($41,017) for violating personal data legislation, Google's first fine for that offence.
  • Google confirmed the fine and offered no further comment.
  • The penalty comes amid a wider standoff between Russia and Big Tech, with Moscow routinely fining social media giants for failing to remove banned content and seeking to compel foreign tech firms to open offices in Russia.

Bill Introduced in US to End Stay of Foreign Students after Studies

  • A group of US lawmakers has reintroduced a legislation in the House of Representatives to eliminate a programme that allows foreign students to stay in the country for work after the completion of their studies under certain conditions, a Bill if passed into law can affect tens and thousands of Indians studying in this country.

Biden Nominates Indian-American Rashad Hussain as Ambassador

  • U.S. President Joe Biden has nominated Indian-American attorney Rashad Hussain as the Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom, the first Muslim to be nominated to the key position.
  • Mr. Hussain is currently Director for Partnerships and Global Engagement at the National Security Council.
  • He previously served as Senior Counsel at the Department of Justice's National Security Division. During the Obama administration, he served as US Special Envoy to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), US Special Envoy for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications and Deputy Associate White House Counsel.

Fourteen Tiger Reserves of India Get (CA|TS) Recognition

  • From India, 14 tiger reserves have received the accreditation of the Global Conservation Assured Tiger Standards (CA|TS), on the occasion of International Tiger Day on July 29, 2021. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) recognized the 'BaghRakshaks' for their efforts in protecting Tigers and forests. The NTCA's quarterly newsletter STRIPES was also released during the event.
  • The tiger reserves of India that have received prestigious global accreditation from CA|TS are: Mudumalai and Anamalai Tiger Reserves, Tamil Nadu, Bandipur Tiger Reserve, Karnataka, Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, Kerala, Sunderbans Tiger Reserve, West Bengal, Dudhwa Tiger Reserve, Uttar Pradesh, Valmiki Tiger Reserve, Bihar, Pench Tiger Reserve, Maharashtra, Satpura, Kanha and Panna Tiger Reserves, Madhya Pradesh.
  • CA|TS has been agreed upon as an accreditation tool by the global coalition of Tiger Range Countries (TRCs) and has been developed by tiger and protected area experts.
  • Officially launched in 2013, it sets minimum standards for effective management of target species and encourages the assessment of these standards in relevant conservation areas.

RBI Cancels Licence of Madgaum Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd, Margao

  • The RBI cancelled the licence of the Madgaum Urban Co-operative Bank Limited, Margao, Goa, as the bank with its current financial position would be unable to pay its present depositors in full.
  • The RBI further said that as per the data submitted by the bank, about 99 per cent of the depositors will receive full amounts of their deposits from the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).
  • The Office of Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Goa, has also been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator for the bank.

  • Pune-based technology services firm Zensar Technologies changed its logo and a new brand identity, its first major rebranding in almost two decades.
  • The new identity, while marking the new engineering-centric strategy, continues to underscore Zensar's strong foundation of innovation, customer centricity and award-winning people-first culture.
  • The rebranding comes on the back of strategic investments in building capabilities that help businesses take disruptive experiences and products to market with velocity.

GE Healthcare Selects 6 Indian Start-ups under 'Cohort 3' Programme

  • Medical technology company GE Healthcare has selected six Indian startups under its 'Cohort 3' programme to help them build and scale up their technologies for their target market segments.
  • The selected startups 4basecare, Haystack Analytics, zMed Healthcare Technologies, Tricog, Aira Matrix and Qritive will spend six months with healthcare industry experts from within and outside GE on their product development.
  • Before this, six healthtech startups, Aarogya AI, Brain Sight AI, InMed Prognostics, Onward Assist, Fluid AI and Wellthy Therapeutics that were part of The India Edison Accelerator's Cohort 2, graduated in June 2021.

ISRO-NASA Joint Mission NISAR Satellite to be Launched in 2023

  • The ISRO-NASA Joint Mission NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite, which aims to measure changes in the earth's surface globally using advanced radar images, is scheduled to be launched in early 2023.
  • NISAR is a joint Earth observation mission between ISRO and NASA, used for global observation of the entire earth, including the polar cryosphere and the Indian Ocean region.
  • This is a dual-band (L-band and S-band) radar imaging mission with full polarimetric and interferometric modes of operation for observing small changes in land, vegetation, and cryosphere.
  • NASA is developing L-band SAR and related systems, while ISRO is developing S-band SAR, spacecraft bus, launch vehicle, and related launch services.
  • The main scientific goal of this mission is to improve understanding of the effects of climate change on the planet's changing ecosystems, terrestrial and coastal processes, land deformation, and the cryosphere.

South Africa's Schoenmaker Sets Individual Swimming World Record

  • South Africa's Tatjana Schoenmaker has set the first individual swimming world record at the Tokyo Olympics.
  • She won the women's 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes, 18.95 seconds, breaking the mark of 2:19.11 set by Denmark's Rikke Moller Pedersen at the 2013 world championships in Barcelona.
  • The United States claimed the other two medals. Lilly King set a blistering pace early in the race and held on for a silver in 2:19.92. Annie Lazor grabbed bronze in 2:20.84.
  • It was the third world record at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, with the first two coming in women's relays.

Medal for Lovlina Borgohain

  • Debutant boxer Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) provided the spark that India's Olympic campaign desperately needed with a medal-clinching quarter-final win, while ace shuttler P. V. Sindhu reconfirmed her status as one of the greats of the sport.
  • Borgohain a two-time world championship medallist, took a big step in making her own space in the Indian women's boxing's landscape, which has been largely dominated by the iconic M C Mary Kom.
  • She defeated former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei to become the first among nine Indian boxers in fray to be assured of at least a bronze.

P. V. Sindhu Through to Semi-finals at Tokyo Olympics

  • Reigning world Champion P. V. Sindhu kept India's hopes of winning a first-ever Olympic gold in badminton alive as she reached the semi-finals of women's singles with a fighting straight-game win over world no 5 Japanese Akane Yamaguchi.
  • She will next face the winner of the other quarterfinal between Thailand's Ratchanok Inthanon and Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying.

Eleven Cities Get Cycling Pioneers Award

  • The central government has awarded the title 'India's Cycling Pioneers' and a grant of Rs. 1 crore to 11 cities. The award was conferred based on a selection process by national and international transport experts.
  • The cities include Bengaluru, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Kohima, Nagpur, New Town Kolkata, Pimpri Chinchwad, Rajkot, Surat, Vadodara, and Warangal.
  • The India Cycles4Change Challenge saw 107 cities from across the country test, learn, and scale up different cycling-friendly initiatives, in order to kick-start India's cycling revolution.

Elta and Hensoldt Team up for German Ballistic Missile Defense Radar

  • Germany's Hensoldt has won a contract to supply new radars to the country's military, with Israel Aerospace Industries also contributing toward the ultimate goal of modernizing Germany's ballistic missile defense capabilities.
  • The €200 million (U.S. $236 million) contract comes in the wake of a June deal with IAI subsidiary Elta Systems to supply 69 tactical mobile radars to Germany's land forces. Both deals were signed with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support.
  • The latest contract is for four long-range radars as part of the Hughes Air Defence Radar Nachfolgesystem program.
  • Elta and Hensoldt previously cooperated on submarine capabilities, but this is the first time they have worked together on radars.

Iconic Dominican Singer Johnny Ventura Passes Away

  • Iconic Dominican singer Johnny Ventura died of a heart attack at the age of 81.
  • Ventura, whose career spanned six decades, shot to fame after forming a merengue and salsa orchestra called the "Combo Show".
  • The band was considered one of the most significant groups in the musical history of the Caribbean nation.
  • Merengue, which draws on African and Spanish influences, is both a genre of music and a partner dance style.
  • Luis Abinader, President of the Dominican Republic, declared three days of mourning after Ventura's death.

PM Modi Launches SAFAL, AI for All Initiatives

  • To commemorate the first anniversary of National Education Policy 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched SAFAL (Structured Assessment for Analysing Learning), and 'AI For All' joint initiative in collaboration with the CBSE.
  • SAFAL is a competency-based assessment for grades 3, 5, and 8 introduced by CBSE. It will be used to assess the progress of foundational skills and basic learning outcomes/competencies among students. As a diagnostic assessment, it will provide developmental feedback to schools and teachers to improve teaching-learning without additional examination pressure on students.
  • SAFAL will be conducted on a pilot basis in CBSE schools for students in grades 3, 5, and 8 during the academic year 2021-22, in key curricular areas of language, mathematics, and EVS/science. CBSE has invited affiliated schools to participate in SAFAL 2021-22.
