Taiwan Will Set up its First Office in Lithuania Using the Name 'Taiwan'

  • Using the name "Taiwan," Taiwan's government will set up its first office in Europe, in the Baltic nation of Lithuania. The Taiwan government has come up with this decision as it seeks to strengthen its diplomatic presence across the globe with the ever increasing pressure from Beijing.
  • This decision has drawn a rebuke from China while it was praised by the USA.
  • Joseph Wu, Foreign Minister of Taiwan announced the government's decision to open its office in Lithuania.
  • The other diplomatic outposts of Taiwan on the continent are named "Taipei."
  • Taiwan Affairs Office of Beijing has issued statement saying that the formation of the Lithuania office is an attempt at seeking independence. China has also urged Lithuania to adhere to China's one-China principle.

US, Germany Reach Agreement on Nord Stream 2 Gas Pipeline Project

  • The US and Germany have announced an agreement on the issue of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project, an effort to reduce the risk that the contentious project could pose to Ukraine.
  • The 1,230-km gas pipeline, expected to be completed next month, would bring 55 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea.
  • According to a US-Germany joint statement, should Russia attempt to use energy as a weapon or commit further aggressive acts against Ukraine, Germany will take action at the national level and press for effective measures at the European level, including sanctions, to limit Russian export capabilities to Europe in the energy sector, including gas.

  • FCB India, the newly created creative agency of FCB Group India, on Thursday announced its new leadership team. The agency will be led by Debarpita Banerjee as chief executive, Surjo Dutt as chief creative officer and John Thangaraj as chief strategy officer.

SBI Selects Paisalo as its National Corporate Business Correspondent

  • State Bank of India has selected Paisalo Digital as the National Corporate Business Correspondent of the bank for financial inclusion. Paisalo Digital shall extend its services and its reach to the general public including its existing customers and new customers. As a business correspondent for the bank, it will focus and improve the synergy with the thrust of the already up and running fully digital small loan business under SBI-Paisalo Loan Co-origination. Santanu Agarwal, Deputy CEO, Paisalo Digital, said that the company is tapping into the Rs. 8000 billion market opportunity of small ticket loans for India's 365 million unbanked population. This engagement will help the company increase share of fee and service income in total income in future, he added. He also mentioned that coupled with the fully digital SBI-Paisalo Loan Co-origination Scheme, Paisalo will achieve its target of creating a seamless banking solution for India's Bottom of the Pyramid population.

ICICI Bank, HPCL launch 'ICICI Bank HPCL Super Saver' Credit Card

  • ICICI Bank announced the launch of a co-branded credit card with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to enable users to get benefits and reward points for using multiple credit cards in one. Named, 'ICICI Bank HPCL Super Saver Credit Card', the card offers best-in-class rewards and benefits to customers on their everyday spends on fuel as well as other categories including electricity and mobile, departmental stores like Big Bazaar and D-Mart, and e-commerce portals, among others. Powered by VISA, the card is unique among its peers which typically offer benefits on only one category of spend.
  • Customers can apply for the 'ICICI Bank HPCL Super Saver Credit Card' through the Bank's internet banking platform or the mobile banking app, iMobile Pay. They get a digital card in a 100% contactless and paperless manner. The physical card is also sent to the customer by ICICI Bank within a few days. Further, customers can manage their transaction settings and credit limit conveniently on the iMobile Pay app.

NEA Scout: NASA's New Spacecraft

  • NASA has announced that its new spacecraft, NEA Scout, has successfully undergone all the required tests and has now been safely tucked inside the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket.
  • NEA Scout is among one of several payloads that will hitch a ride on Artemis I, which is expected to be launched in November. Near-Earth Asteroid Scout (NEA Scout) is a small spacecraft which is not bigger than a big shoebox. NEA Scout's primary mission is to collect data from a near-Earth asteroid. This will be America's first interplanetary mission that will be using special solar sail propulsion. This spacecraft has been made using stainless steel alloy booms and will deploy an aluminium-coated sail which is of 925 square feet. This spacecraft will take around two years to reach the targeted asteroid and will nearly 93 million miles away from the Earth during its encounter with the asteroid.
  • The spacecraft is equipped with high-grade scientific special cameras that can take pictures from ranges of 10 cm/pixels to 50 cm/pixels. Post taking the images it can also process them and reduce their file sizes before using its medium-gain antenna to send them to the earth-based Deep Space Network.

UN, IOC Release Stamps to Commemorate Tokyo Olympics

  • The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) has in partnership with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) created a series of stamps to commemorate the Tokyo Olympic Games and to highlight sport's contribution to peace around the world.
  • The six stamp sheets feature the Olympic sports of sailing, baseball, judo, diving, equestrian and golf, the IOC informed.

Tokyo 2020: Guinea Withdraws on Eve of Games

  • The government of Guinea has decided not to send any of its athletes to the Tokyo Olympics over Covid-19 fears.
  • The Guinean delegation was due to include a total of five competitors - one each in athletics, judo and wrestling while two were set for the athletics programme
  • "Due to the rise in cases of Covid-19 variants the government out of concern for the health of the Guinean athletes, has regretfully decided to cancel their participation", wrote the Minister of Sport, Sanoussy Bantama Sow, in a short statement.
  • This is the first case of an entire team being withdrawn from the delayed Games in Tokyo.

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi Appointed Deputy Leader of House in Rajya Sabha

  • The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced the appointment of Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi as the deputy leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. Naqvi took over from Piyush Goyal who was elevated as the leader of the house in the Upper House.
  • A former minister of state for parliamentary affairs minister, Naqvi is well versed in Parliamentary affairs. He is also known for his cordial relations across party lines. At parliamentary affairs ministry, he had a good working relation with various political parties. He knows how to engage with the opposition, especially when there are tricky issues before the house.
  • Both Goyal and Naqvi have their job cut out for them. They will have to handle the opposition in the Upper House and ensure that the house proceedings are conducted smoothly to allow the passage of bills.

Historic Urban Landscape Project Launched for Gwalior, Orchha

  • In the state of Madhya Pradesh, the cities of Orchha and Gwalior have been selected by UNESCO under its 'Historic Urban Landscape Project.' This project was started in the year 2011.
  • UNESCO's Historic Urban Landscape project for the cities of Orchha and Gwalior was launched through video conferencing by Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
  • Six cities of South Asia, including Indian cities of Varanasi and Ajmer are already involved in this project. Gwalior and Orchha have been included as the 7th and 8th cities of South Asia.
  • UNESCO will prepare the management and development of these cities.
  • This project will help in boosting the tourism of the state of Madhya Pradesh. Along with this additional employment opportunities will be created.
  • These cities will be jointly developed by UNESCO, the Government of India and the state of Madhya Pradesh by putting primary focus on their cultural and historical improvement.
  • By implementing this project of UNESCO, full care of the history, culture, traditions, nature as well as heritage of the cities will be sustainably developed.
  • This project of UNESCO was started in the year 2011 with the primary aim of well-planned and all inclusive development of the fast-growing historical cities around the world, while keeping in mind to preserve the heritage and the culture.

National Broadcasting Day

  • National Broadcasting Day is observed on 23rd July all over India. On this day in 1927, the first-ever radio broadcast in the country went on the air from the Bombay Station under the Indian Broadcasting Company.
  • Radio broadcasting began in India under British rule in 1922 with programs by the Bombay Presidency Radio Club. Later in 1927, the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) was made a private entity and granted permission to operate two radio stations.
  • IBC went into liquidation on 1 March 1930, following which the government took over the broadcasting facilities and started the Indian State Broadcasting Service (ISBS) on 1 April 1930 on an experimental basis for two years. Then in June 1936, it went on to become All India Radio.
  • When the country attained Independence from the British Raj, there were six radio stations - Delhi, Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Tiruchirapalli, and Lucknow. However, FM broadcasting began almost 30 years later on 23rd July 1977 in Chennai.

CM KCR to Launch 'Telangana Dalit Bandhu' from Huzurabad

  • Telangana Chief Minister, K. Chandrasekhar Rao will launch his government's new Dalit empowerment scheme, now christened Dalita Bandhu, on a pilot basis from the Huzurabad assembly constituency. The scheme, which was to be called Dalit Empowerment Scheme, has now been renamed as Dalita Bandhu scheme. As part of the scheme, eligible Dalit families would be given Rs. 10 lakh in cash directly to their accounts. The sanctioned amounts will be deposited in the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries.
  • Poll-bound Huzurabad constituency has five mandals and the total number of Dalit families in this constituency stands at 20,929. All these families will be scrutinised before the final beneficiary list is made. All those found eligible will be extended the benefits of the scheme. Huzurabad constituency has only a total of around 2 lakh voters. Out of the total, CM KCR's scheme will benefit nearly 21,000 families, which accounts for around 60,000 to 80,000 people, if this scheme is implemented soon.

JNCASR Hits Nature Index Top 50 for Materials Science

  • The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre For Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru, has been placed in the top 50 institutions worldwide for advances in materials science by the prestigious Nature Index. The list which includes 18 institutes from China, 12 from the United States and 2 from the United Kingdom places the JNCASR in the 23rd position globally among universities and institutions as part of its '50 Rising Institutions' list.
  • The centre is also the only Indian institute on the list and shares the privilege with others such as Shanghai Jiao Tong University which is in the first place, the University of Texas Austin (fourth), the University of Berkley (12th) and the University of Cambridge (27th). JNCASR president Professor Giridhar U Kulkarni, who is also a materials scientist, described the mood at the centre as being jubilant.

Sunken Settlement Discovered Beneath a Venice Lagoon

  • The submerged remains of a Roman road have been found on the seafloor of the Venice lagoon, along with archaeological structures that are thought to be what's left of a dock and settlements.
  • The remains are thought to date to centuries before Venice was founded in early medieval times, when much of what is now the lagoon was accessible by land.
  • The new discoveries in the Treporti Channel, in the northern part of Venice's outer lagoon, confirm the findings of an archaeological investigation of the area in the 1980s, and suggest that the now-submerged area was mostly dry land. The area likely had several small permanent settlements and roads that linked them to nearby trading centers.
