Haiti President Jovenel Moise Assassinated

  • Haitian President Jovenel Moise was assassinated after a group of unidentified people attacked his private residence.
  • Interim Premier Claude Joseph condemned what he called a hateful, inhumane and barbaric act, adding that Haiti's National Police and other authorities had the situation in the Caribbean country under control.
  • The nation of more than 11 million people had grown increasingly unstable and disgruntled under Mose's rule. Its economic, political and social woes have deepened, with gang violence spiking heavily in the capital of Port-au-Prince, inflation spiraling and food and fuel becoming scarcer at times in a country where 60% of the population makes less than USD 2 a day.
  • Moise had been ruling by decree for more than two years after the country failed to hold elections, which led to Parliament being dissolved.

Iran Hosts Afghan Peace Talks

  • Iran hosted the first significant talks in months between Taliban and Afghan Government representatives, a surprise meeting that comes as the US completes its withdrawal from Afghanistan and districts fall to the Taliban across the country.
  • The high-level peace talks between the warring sides follow months-old discussions in Qatar that have been stalled by a diplomatic stalemate and escalating violence. Even as officials faced each other across vast tables in Tehran and Iran's top diplomat pledged to end the crisis, fighting surged in Afghanistan's Badghis.
  • The Taliban political committee, led by chief negotiator Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, met Afghan government officials, including former Vice-President Younus Qanooni and others from the High Council for National Reconciliation.

Gravelyia Boro: New Underground Spider from Assam

  • Two species of spiders have been found in Jharbari range of western Assam's Chirang Reserve Forest. Both the species have been sharing same space.
  • Gravelyia boro is a newly discovered burrow spider.
  • Dexippus kleini is an oriental jumping spider. It has been recorded for the first time after it was originally described 129 years ago by Swedish arachnologist, Tord Tamerlan Teodor Thorell. The spider was discovered by him about 2,600 km away in Sumatra. Both the spiders were discovered from Bodoland Territorial Region. They have been described in latest issue of Acta Arachnologica published by Arachnological Society of Japan.
  • Gravelyia boro belongs to Nemesiidae family that comprises of 184 species worldwide.
  • Dexippus kleini belongs to Salticidae family which is the largest family of all spiders on earth.

PNB Advises Housing Arm to Rejig Carlyle Deal as Per SEBI Order

  • Punjab National Bank (PNB) has advised its housing finance arm to restructure its fundraising deal with investors, led by the Carlyle Group, in accordance with the recent directive by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). However, PNB Housing Finance has decided to wait for the Securities Appellate Tribunal's (SAT) order.

Dept. of Public Enterprises Brought under Finance Ministry

  • Central government has decided to bring Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) under Finance Ministry.
  • DPE was earlier under Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.
  • It has been brought under Finance Minister in a bid to ease coordination regarding future disinvestment plans.
  • Finance Ministry now comprises of the following six departments: DPE, Department of Economic Affairs, Department of Expenditure, Department of Revenue, Department of Investment & Public Asset Management and Department of Financial Services.

Moglix Acquires Used Machinery E-commerce Firm Vendaxo

  • Moglix in its quest to build the operating system for the manufacturing sector has acquired Vendaxo, an e-commerce platform for buying and selling of used machinery. This move by Moglix, the industrial business-to-business unicorn for manufacturing, is a step towards creating a sustainable and capital-efficient manufacturing ecosystem. Through the acquisition, Moglix wants to provide access to high value capital goods at economical prices to manufacturers.
  • Founded in 2017, Vendaxo is a B2B e-commerce platform that provides used machinery liquidation solutions to MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) and large manufacturing enterprises such as Siemens, Arvind India, Marico, Raymond, and Torrent Pharma. The used machines and equipment marketplace enables 40 thousand users to buy and sell from its verified listings of 31 thousand SKUs (stock keeping units) through its digitally enabled and secured escrow process. India's used machinery market is close to Rs. 64,000 crore and is a critical lever for driving sustainable manufacturing in the country.

England Beat Denmark to Play Final against Italy

  • England reached its first major international tournament final after a gap of 55 years as the three lions registered a win against Denmark in the second semi-final of Euro 2020 at the Wembley Stadium, London. England will clash Italy in the final of the European Championship at the Wembley Stadium.

World's 1st Solo Motorcycle Expedition Covering 18 Himalayan Passes

  • Mountain biker Kanchan Ugursandi finished in New Delhi the world's first solo motorcycle expedition covering 18 treacherous passes of northern Himalayan mountain ranges.
  • The month-long expedition witnessed many firsts by a solo woman rider. Miss Ugursandi has become the first solo woman biker to scale the Umlingla Pass, the first woman to cover the 18 passes and also the first woman to traverse a distance of 3,187 kilometre from New Delhi-Manali-Leh-Umlingla-Delhi in one go.
  • Her expedition was flagged off by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on June 11 from New Delhi.
  • Ugursandi traversed the distance in 25 days and crossed 18 passes to include the world's highest motorable Umlingla pass at 19,300 feet made by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

PM Modi Rejigs Cabinet

  • Effecting a big reset, Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought in Sarbananda Sonowal, Narayan Rane and Jyotiraditya Scindia as Cabinet ministers while dropping as many as 12 ministers including Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, IT and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar.
  • As many as 15 Cabinet ministers, including some new faces, were sworn-in at the swearing in ceremony held in the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

President Accepts Resignations of 12 Union Ministers

  • President Ram Nath Kovind accepted the resignations of 12 Union ministers, including Ravi Shankar Prasad, Prakash Javadekar and Harsh Vardhan, with immediate effect.
  • These resignations came ahead of a major expansion and reshuffle of the Union Council of Ministers later in the day.
  • In all, six Cabinet Ministers, one Minister of State (Independent Charge) and five Ministers of State have resigned.
  • Those resigned include Cabinet Ministers D V Sadananda Gowda (Chemical and Fertilizers), Ravi Shankar Prasad (Law and Justice, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology), Thaawarchand Gehlot (Social Justice and Empowerment), Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank' (Education), Harsh Vardhan (Health and Family Welfare) and Prakash Javadekar (Environment, Forest and Climate Change).

Anurag Thakur Gets Information and Broadcasting, Sports Ministry

  • Anurag Thakur, the BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur who was sworn-in today as a Cabinet minister, has been entrusted with two important portfolios - Information and Broadcasting, and Sports.
  • Mr. Thakur was previously the Minister of State for Finance. He is among six junior ministers who have been promoted to the Union Cabinet.

INS Tabar Conducts Military Exercise with Italian Navy

  • Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tabar participated in military exercises with frontline frigate of Italian Navy.
  • INS Tabar joined Italian Navy and entered Port of Naples as part of ongoing deployment in Mediterranean.
  • Commanding officer Captain Mahesh Mangipudi called on senior officers of Prefect of Naples Authority, regional Italian navy headquarters and coast guard headquarters during the stay.
  • While returning, Tabar also undertook a Maritime Partnership Exercise with ITS Antonio Marceglia in Tyrrhenian Sea.
  • This exercise covered several naval operations such as air defence procedures, communication drills, replenishment at sea, and cross deck helo operations by day and night.
  • Exercise was mutually beneficial for enhancing interoperability and consolidating combined operations against maritime threats.

Virbhadra Singh Passes Away

  • Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and Congress leader Virbhadra Singh passed away after battling a prolonged illness. The Congress leader was 87.
  • Virbhadra Singh was a nine-time MLA and five-time MP. He served as Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister for six times.
  • The veteran Congress leader also served as union deputy minister, Tourism and Civil Aviation, minister of state for industries, union minister of steel and Union Minister of micro, small & medium enterprises (MSME).

IIT Guwahati to Collaborate with North Eastern Space Application Centre to Study Disasters

  • IIT Guwahati is set to collaborate with North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) to carry out several initiatives jointly for development of the North East Region and create a mass of skilled professionals in the field.
  • An MoU was signed between the two institutions on June 28, 2021. Some of the initiatives that would be taken up under this partnership include internship programmes, joint degree programmes, short-term training programmes, student exchange programmes and joint projects, among others.
  • A multi-disciplinary approach would be adopted to study ways to tackle disasters.

World's Tallest Sandcastle Built in Denmark

  • World's tallest sandcastle was built in Denmark. It has established new Guinness World Record of 21.16 metres. Denmark's new sandcastle is 3.5 meter taller than earlier record of 17.66-meter set by Germany in 2019.
  • Sandcastle is built in the shape of a triangle in order to avoid collapse like many others have. A wooden structure has been built around the sandcastle to allow artist to carve incredible figures in sand. It is a highly decorated monument in small seaside village of Blokhus. It was made up of 4860 tonnes of sand and is reminiscent of a pyramid.
  • This village is located in Jammerbugt Municipality of North Jutland in Denmark. This village is a popular beach town accounting for around 1 million visitors every year. It was originally named Hune Hvarre. In 1600s there were barely any trees this village. So, timber was imported from Norway. In order to store timber, locals constructed some houses out it. These houses are called as 'block houses' after which village has been given Danish name Blokhus.
