Trudeau Names Indigenous Leader in 'Historic' First

  • Canadian Prime Minister has named Mary Simon as governor general, the first indigenous person to hold the post.
  • The former diplomat and advocate for Inuit rights will represent Canada's head of state, Queen Elizabeth II.
  • The announcement comes nearly six months after the former governor general, Julie Payette, resigned amid accusations of bullying.
  • While the role is largely ceremonial, the governor general presides over important state duties.
  • Ms. Simon's appointment follows a national reckoning over Canada's legacy of residential schools. These government-funded boarding schools were part of policy to attempt to assimilate indigenous children and roll back indigenous cultures and languages.

New York Governor Declares Gun Violence a Health Emergency

  • New York has become the first US state to declare a disaster emergency order to address rising gun violence.
  • New York State saw 51 shootings over the 4 July holiday weekend, Governor Andrew Cuomo said as he signed the executive order.
  • The directive will funnel $138.7m (£100m) towards gun violence intervention and prevention programmes.
  • It comes amid reports of a rise in gun deaths countrywide, including nearly 200 over the past weekend.
  • In March, the FBI released preliminary 2020 statistics showing a significant jump - 25% - in murders from the year before. So far, the upward trend has continued into 2021. In the US, the majority of homicides are gun-related.
  • US President Joe Biden unveiled a White House strategy to combat the rise in homicides in late June, which includes curtailing rogue gun dealers and firearms trafficking. It also delegates more funding for personnel - including law enforcement.

TCS Enters Strategic Partnership with OTT Streaming Platform SonyLIV

  • IT services major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) entered into a strategic partnership with India's premier OTT streaming platform, SonyLIV, to help create an innovative business model enabled by digital technologies, enhance customer experience, and pave the path to future growth.
  • The partnership will leverage TCS' next-gen digital capabilities, global expertise, domain knowledge and innovation ecosystem to define SonyLIV's platform transformation roadmap for India and global markets. TCS will help enhance its core OTT platform to leverage AI and machine learning to provide personalized experiences to subscribers across devices. It will also help SonyLIV use data and insights to monetize content and create new revenue streams.

Tata Power to Re-appointment N. Chandrasekaran as Director

  • Tata Power said that its shareholders have approved the re-appointment of its Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran as director of the firm.
  • The shareholders approved the resolution to reappoint N. Chandrasekaran as director in its annual general meeting (AGM).
  • Chandrasekaran was appointed as non-independent non-executive director of the firm in February 2017.

Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group to Acquire Stake in FICC

  • Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG) is set to acquire a 74.9 per cent stake in Fullerton India Credit Company (FICC), a non- banking finance company that offers credit to retail as well as small businesses, for about $2 billion. The transaction is contingent upon regulatory approvals.
  • SMFG has plans to eventually acquire 100 per cent in FICC — a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fullerton Financial Holdings (FFH), which, in turn, is a wholly-owned entity of Singapore-based investment company Temasek Holdings. The acquisition would mark a big Asian push by SMFG towards consumer and MSME lending.
  • Through this investment, SMFG will gain a retail finance platform in India, which is essential for its Asia franchise, and will strive to contribute to further develop India's financial industry as a whole.

Thums Up Announces Worldwide Partnership with Tokyo Olympic Games

  • The Coca-Cola Company's home-grown soft drink brand, Thums Up, announced to become a worldwide partner at the Olympic Games to be held in Tokyo starting July 23.
  • This is probably the first time when a beverage firm from India is partnering with the Olympic Games.
  • As India enters its 100th year of participation at the Olympic Games, Thums Up aims to celebrate and salute the real heroes of the Olympic Games, athletes, who overcame tremendous odds to reach where they are today.
  • The Coca-Cola Company has a long history of sponsoring major sporting events, organisations and projects around the world.

Italy Beats Spain in Penalty Shootout

  • In the first semifinal of Euro 2020, Italy continued its unbeaten run to defeat Spain 4-2 via penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium, London. Italy will play against the winner of the second semi-final which will be played between England and Denmark at Wembley.
  • Spain advanced to the last four beating Croatia 5-3 in extra time in the last 16, and then defeating Switzerland in a penalty shootout in which goalkeeper Unai Simon was the hero.

Maharashtra Govt. Introduces 3 Bills to Counter Centre's Farm Laws

  • The Shiv Sena-led MVA government in Maharashtra introduced three amendment bills in the assembly related to agriculture, co-operation, food and civil supplies, in a move to counter the new farm laws enacted by the Centre that are facing stiff opposition from a section of cultivators.
  • The bills have provisions for higher than MSP rate for produce in farming agreement with traders, timely payment of dues, three-year jail term and Rs. 5 lakh fine or both for harassment of farmers.
  • They also have provisions to give power to the state government to regulate and prohibit production, supply, distribution and impose stock limits on essential commodities.

Separate Ministry for Strengthening Cooperative Movement

  • The Narendra Modi government has decided to create a new Ministry of Cooperation with an aim to strengthen the cooperative movement in the country.
  • Amid a strong buzz about a massive cabinet reshuffle exercise expected on Wednesday, government sources said the new ministry is being created for realising the vision of 'sahkar se samriddhi' (through cooperation to prosperity).
  • This ministry will provide a separate administrative, legal and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement in the country.

Delhi Commission for Women Chief Swati Maliwal Gets another 3-year Term

  • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal approved another term for Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal and her team for doing excellent work.
  • The panel's term is for three years and this will be Maliwal's third stint.
  • This is the second time she has been granted extension. In July 2018, she was also granted extension before her term was about to end.

IAF to Procure 10 Anti-drone Systems

  • After a drone attack at the Indian Air Force (IAF) station in Jammu, the force has decided to procure 10 anti-drone systems to stop such attacks in future in the border areas.
  • The force has floated a Request for Information (RFI) for Indian vendors for Counter Unarmed Aircraft System (CUAS) that can be armed with laser directed energy weapons to bring down rogue drones.

Russia Offers Military Support to secure Tajik-Afghan Border

  • Russia's military base in Tajikistan is fully equipped to help secure its border with Afghanistan, and Moscow will take extra measures to protect it if needed.
  • Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon ordered the mobilisation of 20,000 military reservists to bolster the border with Afghanistan after more than 1,000 Afghan security personnel fled across the frontier in response to Taliban militant advances.
  • The Afghan military exodus comes as Taliban overrun most districts in northeastern Badakhshan province.

Dilip Kumar: Legendary Indian Actor Dies

  • Legendary Bollywood actor Mohammed Yusuf Khan, known professionally as Dilip Kumar passed away at 98. He was popularly known as the tragedy king of Bollywood. He was last seen in the 1998 film Qila. He was the first actor to win the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in 1954 and won it a total of 8 times. He and Shah Rukh Khan jointly hold the record for most Filmfare trophies.
  • Dilip Kumar was born on 11 December 1922, the Qissa Khawani Bazaar area of Peshawar (present-day Pakistan) to Ayesha Begum and Lala Ghulam Sarwar Khan.
  • He debuted in films with 1944's Jwar Bhata, but the film and his work did not garner much attention. It was with 1947's Jugnu, also starring Noor Jehan, that he clinched his first box office hit.
  • In 1949, he starred in Andaz with Raj Kapoor and Nargis, and it was that film that made Dilip Kumar a big star.
  • Dilip Kumar is listed in the Guinness World Records for winning the maximum number of awards by an Indian actor. He is also credited as the first method actor in India.
  • He was honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994 and Padma Vibhushan in 2015.

Nitin Gadkari Becomes Brand Ambassador of Khadi Prakritk Paint

  • The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways & MSME, Nitin Gadkari, virtually inaugurated India's first and only paint made from cow dung, under the brand name 'Khadi Prakritk Paint'. In addition to this, the minister also declared himself as the "Brand Ambassador" of paint, to promote it across the country and encourage young entrepreneurs to take up the manufacturing of cow dung paint.
  • The Khadi Prakritk Paint automated manufacturing plant has been set up on the campus of Kumarappa National Handmade Paper Institute (KNHPI), Jaipur, which is a unit of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).

Global Forgiveness Day

  • Every year July 7 is observed as Global Forgiveness Day. On the day, seek forgiveness and have the big heart to forgive others for their mistakes.
  • Global Forgiveness Day was founded in 1994 by the CECA (Christian Embassy of Christ's Ambassadors). It originally started in Canada, but as it gained popularity throughout the world, it was renamed as Global Forgiveness Day.
  • While there is a different Forgiveness Day in August, founded by the Worldwide Forgiveness Alliance, the Forgiveness Day on 7th July was founded by CECA. Honestly, though, both days really have essentially the same message; to forgive!

World Chocolate Day

  • World Chocolate Day or International Chocolate Day is celebrated around the world on July 7. The day is an annual global celebration of chocolate, which allows people to gorge and indulge, hopefully guilt-free, in it. On this day chocolate lovers from all over relish eating different kinds of chocolate or create several dishes with it like cakes, pastries, sinful and gooey brownies, hot chocolate or chocolate mousse, without any guilt.
  • World Chocolate Day was first celebrated in the year 2009. However, some even believe that people started marking July 7 as International Chocolate Day because it was the day when chocolate was first introduced to Europe in 1550.

Rajasthan Schools Rank Last in Terms of Gender Parity in Senior Classes

  • Rajasthan schools rank last in the Gender Parity Index (GPI) at the higher secondary level when compared with the rest of the country, reveals the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) report 2019-20, which analyses trends in school education in the country.
  • According to the released 2019-20 report, in Rajasthan, the GPI value for classes 11-12 is 0.87, much lower than the national average of 1.04 in this category.
  • GPI for gross enrollment ratio (GER) is the ratio of girls to boys enrolled in schools, and is a measure of the relative access to education. A GPI of less than 1 suggests girls are more disadvantaged than boys in terms of access to school.

University of Hull Announces Undergraduate Scholarships

  • The University of Hull, a teaching and research-based UK University, has announced a scholarship scheme for undergraduate courses for the academic year 2021-22. Foreign students (from India, Nepal, Philippines, etc) with an international fee status and European Union students starting their undergraduate course in 2021/22 are eligible for the scholarships.
  • Under this scheme, a discount of £1,500 will be given per year for the sciences programmes and £1,000 for the arts programmes, off the total tuition fee. Students from countries classified by the World Bank as lower-income and middle lower-income countries will receive an additional discount of £2000 per year. Indian students may avail of this additional discount since India is classified as a middle lower-income country.

Thousand Year-old Church Found in Saxony

  • Archaeologists searching for a royal palace in Germany have discovered a 1,000-year-old church constructed for Otto the Great (also called Otto I).
  • Otto I, who lived from A.D. 912 to 973, consolidated and expanded the Holy Roman Empire. The empire, which was centered in Germany, controlled territory throughout central Europe. Historical records indicated that a palace and church were built near Helfta in Saxony for the Roman emperor; and archaeologists with the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology Saxony-Anhalt started searching for it in May.
  • The three-aisled church is about 100 feet (30 meters) long and was shaped like a cross, excavations revealed. The church was destroyed during the Protestant Reformation that swept through Europe in the 16th century and led to the creation of new branches of Christianity.
