Govt. Extends Superannuation Age of LIC Chairman

  • The government has extended the superannuation age of IPO-bound LIC Chairman to up to 62 years by making amendment to the Life Insurance Corporation of India (Staff) Regulations, 1960.
  • According to a government notification, the changes made in the rules will be called the Life Insurance Corporation of India (Staff) Amendment Rules, 2021.
  • It is to be noted that the retirement age for the top executives of the majority of PSUs is 60 years, barring a few exceptions, including the State Bank of India (SBI).

Govt. Includes Retail and Wholesale Trades under MSMEs

  • Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced inclusion of retail and wholesale trade under MSMEs as per which they will also now get the benefit of priority sector lending under RBI guidelines.
  • The government is committed to strengthening MSMEs and make them engines of economic growth.
  • The revised guidelines will benefit 2.5 crore retail and wholesale traders. The move would also allow them to register on Udyam portal.
  • Commenting on the development, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said, with this decision, traders will be able to avail requisite finances from banks and financial institutions under priority sector lending.
  • Besides, now the traders can avail the benefits of several other government schemes for MSMEs.

India's Exports Rise to All-time High in June Quarter

  • India recorded the highest-ever exports of $95 billion during April-June, up 85 per cent year-on year (YoY) and 18 per cent higher than the first quarter of the fiscal year 2019-20.
  • It is also 16 per cent more than the previous highest Q1 exports of FY19 ($82 billion) and is higher than the earlier peak of exports in Q4FY21 ($90 billion.
  • The merchandise exports grew 47 per cent YoY to $32.46 billion in June, driven by a robust demand of engineering goods, petroleum products, and gems and jewellery in the external markets.
  • The government is working towards achieving another all-time high of $400 billion merchandise exports target by the end of the current fiscal year.

Asteroid Named after a Senegalese Expert

  • The International Astronomical Union has honoured a Senegalese astronomer Maram Kairé by naming an asteroid in the solar system after him.
  • Mr. Kairé welcomed the news with humility.
  • Mr. Kairé, whose passion for astronomy began at a tender age, has received congratulatory messages from different countries.
  • His colleague Mary Teuw Niane said: "From now on the name of Maram Kaïré floats in the Sky, standard bearer of Senegal and Africa."

WAKO India Kickboxing Federation Gets Government Recognition

  • Sports Ministry has decided to recognise WAKO India Kickboxing Federation as a National Sports Federation (NSF) to promote and develop sport in India.
  • WAKO India Kickboxing Federation is affiliated to World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) which is a world body for kickboxing.
  • Since November 30, 2020; WAKO has been a provisionally recognised member of International Olympic Committee (IOC).
  • Recommendation to approve WAKO as fully recognised member of Olympic family was taken by IOC in June 2020.
  • International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board has approved recommendation for WAKO on June 10, 2021 to become a fully recognized member of Olympic family of sport.
  • WAKO is an international organization of kickboxing. It certifies the governing body of amateur kickboxing to develop support & govern amateur level and hold world championship events. It sanctions the champions of kickboxing. WAKO is the only organisation across the world which is recognised by GAISF (Global Association of Sports Federations) and IOC (International Olympic Committee).

Jabir Qualifies for Tokyo Olympics in 400 m Hurdles

  • Ace athlete of the Indian Navy, MP Jabir, has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 400 m hurdles after he clocked 49.78s to win gold at the Inter-State Athletiss Shamrionshirs in Ratiala.
  • Jabir qualified through the World ranking quota where there are 14 spots available. He is currently ranked 34th in the World Athletics' Road to Olympics rankings where 40 athletes qualify.
  • When he competes in the Tokyo Olympics, Jabir would be the first Indian male athlete to participate in the 400m hurdles in Olympics.

ECI Seeks Bengal Govt's Response over Elections to Two Rajya Sabha Seats

  • Election commission of India sought a response from the West Bengal government over elections to two Rajya Sabha seats.
  • Two Rajya Sabha seats which were earlier being held by Dinesh Trivedi and Manas Bhuiyan lie vacant.
  • Manas Bhunia, who is now state water resources minister, stepped down from his Rajya Sabha seat. In February former Trinamool Congress MP Dinesh Trivedi announced his resignation from the Rajya Sabha seat after saying that he felt suffocated.
  • It is also to be noted that the state's chief electoral officer has written to ECI regarding the pending by-elections.
  • Significantly, by-elections are important as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Finance Minister, Amit Mitra are currently non-MLAs and need to get elected within six months, i.e. November 5 to continue as MLA or as CM.

Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat Resigns

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat submitted his resignation to Governor Baby Rani Maurya, a little over three months after taking the charge from Trivendra Rawat.
  • Tirath said that he had resigned to avoid a constitutional crisis. He had taken oath as the CM in March 2021 and had to be elected as MLA within six months to continue on the post. According to Section 151-A of the Representation of the People Act, a bypoll is not held in a state if less than a year is left for the Assembly term to end, which in the case of Uttarakhand is March 2022.
  • The Uttarakhand BJP legislature party will meet to elect its new leader, who will be later sworn in as the next CM of the state where Assembly elections are due early next year.

Indian Army Inducts First Batch of Indigenously Designed & Developed Short Span Bridging Systems

  • Indian Army inducts the 1st batch of 12 indigenously designed and developed Short Span Bridging systems into the Corps of Engineers. The induction ceremony took place in the national capital. The system has been designed by DRDO and manufactured by L&T. Army Chief General MM Naravane and DRDO Chief Dr G Satheesh Reddy attended the event.

India's 1 Indigenous Drone Defence Dome'Indrajaal'

  • India's 1st indigenous drone defence dome 'Indrajaal' has been developed by Hyderabad-based Grene Robotics. As per the company, the drone defence dome – 'Indrajaal' is capable of autonomously protecting an area of 1000-2000 sq km against aerial threats. It protects the area by assessing and acting on aerial threats such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and Low- Radar Cross Section (RCS) targets.

7th Indian Ocean Naval Symposium Concludes in France

  • The 7th edition of the Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) concluded in France. The biennial event was hosted by the French Navy at La Réunion. From India, Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff, Indian Navy, participated in the inaugural session of the event virtually. France is the current chair of the Symposium, which assumed the Chairmanship in June 2021 for a two-year tenure.
  • The Indian Ocean Naval Symposium (IONS) is a series of biennial meetings, held between the littoral states of the Indian Ocean region, to enhance maritime cooperation among Navies of the member states, by providing an open and inclusive forum for discussion of regionally relevant maritime issues such as maritime security cooperation, discuss regional maritime issues, and promote friendly relationships.
  • The first such symposium was held in 2008 with India as host.
  • The chairmanship and location of the Symposium rotates between the various member states.

Andhra CM Launches 'YSR Bima' Scheme

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has launched the 'YSR Bima' scheme with new guidelines, where the government itself will directly pay the insurance amount to the family of the deceased to make the insurance claims easier.
  • In order to support 1.32 lakh families through the YSR Bima scheme, the State government allocated Rs. 750 crores for the year 2021-22. In the last two years, the State government had spent Rs. 1307 crore for YSR Bima.

Mysterious Carving of Naked Man Discovered Near Hadrian's Wall

  • An ancient carving depicting a naked "mystery horseman" discovered at Vindolanda, a Roman fort near Hadrian's Wall, might be a depiction of a god, archeologists said.
  • The carving shows a man without clothes (except a hat) who is holding a spear and standing in front of either a horse or donkey. This roughly 6-inch-wide by 12-inch-long (16 by 31.5 centimeters) stone would have fit into a recess at the fort, according to archaeologists at Vindolanda Charitable Trust in the United Kingdom.
