FATF Keeps Pakistan on Grey List

  • The global Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has decided to keep Pakistan on the grey list of nations requiring constant monitoring till it demonstrates that terror financing investigations and prosecutions target senior leaders and commanders of UN-designated terrorist groups.
  • "Though Pakistan government has made substantial progress and has largely addressed 26 out of 27 action points, it is still failing to implement global FATF standards in a number of areas. This means the risk of money laundering remains high in turn fueling corruption and organised crime," said Pleyer at the end of the FATF's virtual plenary that ended.
  • Pakistan also remains the subject of an investigation by FATF's regional body, the Asia Pacific Group (APG) regarding "serious issues" on money laundering and terror financing. The implication is that even if Pakistan completes all the 27 action points given by FATF, it will also have to clear the APG hurdle. Pakistan will also be subjected to on-site investigations by both FATF and APG before it is cleared.

Hero Cycles Delivers First Batch of Made in India E-bikes to Europe

  • India's Hero Motors Company (HMC) Group has said that Hero Cycles has successfully delivered its first batch of Made in India e-bikes to Europe.
  • The shipment, under the HNF brand of Hero International (HIT), marks the start of the Indian bicycle major's plan to become a leader in the European Union (EU) market, the company said this week.
  • The first batch of around 200 units has been delivered to Germany, with further units planned for the EU in future.
  • The shipment marks a step forward to establish HMC as the largest fully integrated e-bike company in Europe, with a well-oiled manufacturing capability in India and brightens the prospect of India as a reliable supplier to the market other than China.

Tyre Industry Seeks Raw Material Partners to Unleash Growth

  • According to industry body Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA), India's tyre sector is seeking effective collaboration with raw material partners to harness its potential.
  • Last year, the growth plummeted in the first quarter in view of the lockdown. However the industry staged a strong recovery in the subsequent quarters and the supply side was under stress to meet the demand.
  • This year again the industry witnessed a slowdown in the months of May and June.

Seven-member Panel to Manage Jet Airways under Resolution Plan

  • A seven-member monitoring committee, including members appointed by the winning bidder Jalan Kalrock Consortium and the lenders, will soon start managing the day-to-day affairs of Jet Airways till the resolution process is complete.
  • The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the consortium's resolution plan for grounded Jet Airways, subject to certain conditions.
  • The full-service carrier, which suspended operations in April 2019, was undergoing Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP).

Haryana's Shafali Becomes Youngest Indian Cricketer to Make Debut in All Formats

  • Opener Shafali Verma became the youngest Indian cricketer to make debut across formats after being picked for the first ODI against England Women.
  • On her ODI debut, Verma scored 15 runs off 14 balls before being dismissed by Katherine Brunt.
  • The Haryana girl took 17 years and 150 days to make her debut across formats, making her the fifth youngest cricketer overall in the list, headed by Afghanistan's Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Manu-Saurabh Win Silver in 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team Event at ISSF Shooting World Cup

  • The Indian duo of Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker clinched the silver medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at the ISSF Shooting World Cup.
  • Already assured of a silver, the Indian duo was on par with Russia's Vitalina Batsarashkina and Artem Chernousov at 12-12 before losing the last two series to go down 12-16.
  • Representing the other Indian team in the same event, Yashaswini Singh Deswal and Abhishek Verma missed out on a bronze medal.

India, Greece Call for Respecting Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity

  • India and Greece called for following fundamental international principles of rule of law and respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, and denounced radicalisation, violent extremism and terrorism, in a clear signal of their growing convergence on key geopolitical challenges.
  • The issues figured prominently during talks between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias in Athens.
  • Jaishankar is on a three-day visit to Greece, the first tour by an Indian Foreign Minister to Athens in the last 18 years.
  • The two sides also noted with satisfaction the convergence of each other's vision for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific ensuring connectivity and growth for all in the region, the Ministry of External Affairs said after the talks that covered key bilateral, regional and global issue.

BJP Appoints Chiefs of Its Assam, Manipur New Units

  • The BJP named Bhabesh Kalita and Sharda Devi as presidents of its Assam and Manipur units respectively.
  • The appointments were made by BJP national president JP Nadda and come into immediate effect.
  • Kalita, who is a sitting MLA in the Assam assembly, will replace Ranjeet Kumar Dass, who became a minister in the newly-formed government in the state led by Himanta Biswa Sarma.
  • The BJP had won the recently held assembly polls in Assam.

Indore, Surat Joint Winners of Smart Cities 2020; UP Wins 'State Award'

  • Indore and Surat were on Friday adjudged joint winners of the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry's Smart Cities Award 2020, while Uttar Pradesh secured the first position in the state awards category, tailed by Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
  • The awards were given based on a range of themes like social aspects, governance, culture, urban environment, sanitation, economy, built environment, water and urban mobility.
  • In 2019, Surat was the only winner among smart cities.
  • This is the first time that states have also been awarded for the overall performance of smart cities.

IIT-Hyderabad to Offer New Online MTech and MDes Programmes

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad announced new seven online MTech programmes and an online MDes programme for working professionals starting from August 2021. The programmes are launched in view of the IIT Hyderabad's vision to impart wide knowledge to the students in science, technology, and liberal arts.
  • The online MTech/MDes programmes are being offered in various disciplines and streams by different departments of the institute. They are based on the credit system and offer a wide choice of courses to the students. Each programme has core and elective courses and project work.

IGNOU Introduces PG Programme in Urdu

  • Indira Gandhi National Open University's School of Humanities has launched a master programme in Urdu (MUD) through open distance learning mode. Interested students can apply through the admission portal of the university.
  • Candidates who want to apply for the programme should have a bachelor degree or a higher degree from a recognised university. The course is for two years duration. Good knowledge of reading comprehension and writing skill would be a prerequisite for this programme.
  • The programme exposes learners to a wide range of Urdu language and literature. It would be helpful in developing a sound understanding of Urdu literature and also other literature such as Arabic, Persian, English, and Hind.

NSDC And WhatsApp Launch "Digital Skill Champions Program"

  • The National Skill Development Corporation and WhatsApp announced an alliance to launch the Digital Skill Champions Program that aims to train India's youth on digital skills, in order to make them employment ready. The partnership identifies two broad areas of collaboration viz., WhatsApp Digital Skills Academy and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) and WhatsApp Business App Training sessions.
  • Through this program, school and university students would be coached to imbibe digital and online skills that would culminate with WhatsApp and NSDC awarding 'Digital Skill Champions' certification. The course is based on a module format, is comprehensive and intensive in imparting knowledge about important aspects of the online ecosystem, equipping students with technology-based learning on campuses across tier 3 and 4 towns and cities throughout the country.
