Joe Biden to Meet Putin on June 16

  • The White House announced that US President Joe Biden will meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Geneva, Switzerland on June 16.
  • The leaders will discuss the full range of pressing issues, as we seek to restore predictability and stability to the US-Russia relationship.
  • Last month, Biden held a phone call with Putin, where he had voiced his concerns over the sudden Russian military build-up in occupied Crimea and on Ukraine's borders, and called on Russia to de-escalate tensions.
  • He had reaffirmed his goal of building a stable and predictable relationship with Russia consistent with US interests and proposed a summit meeting in a third country in the coming months to discuss the full range of issues between the United States and Russia.

Iran and World Powers Resume Talks on US Return to Nuclear Deal

  • World powers were set to open a fifth round of talks with Iran aimed at bringing the United States back into the landmark 2015 nuclear deal meant to prevent the Islamic Republic from obtaining an atomic bomb.
  • The talks in Vienna come the day after the UN's nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, was able to strike a last-minute agreement with Tehran on a one-month extension to a deal on surveillance cameras at Iran's nuclear sites.
  • The issue wasn't directly related to the ongoing talks on the nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, but had Iran not agreed it could have seriously complicated the discussions.
  • The US is not directly involved in the talks but an American delegation headed by President Joe Biden's special envoy for Iran, Rob Malley, has also been in the Austrian capital. Representatives from the other powers involved Germany, France, Britain, Russia and China have been shuttling between the U.S. and the Iranians to facilitate indirect talks.

Mali's Coup Leader Dismisses President and Prime Minister

  • Mali's former coup leader Assimi Goita fired the President and Prime Minister of the transitional government but promised to still hold new elections next year.
  • The move came a day after the two leaders were arrested by the military following their announcement of a cabinet reshuffle. Goita said that the President and Prime Minister had acted without consulting him.

The Oldest Known Tattoo Tools were Found at an Ancient Tennessee Site

  • Ancient tattooing tools are tough to find or even recognize as implements for creating skin designs. But new microscopic studies of two turkey leg bones with sharpened ends indicate that Native Americans used these items to make tattoos between around 5,520 and 3,620 years ago.
  • These pigment-stained bones are the world's oldest known tattooing tools, say archaeologist Aaron Deter-Wolf of the Tennessee Division of Archaeology in Nashville and his colleagues. The find suggests that Native American tattoo traditions in eastern North America extend back more than a millennium earlier than previously thought (SN: 3/4/19). Ötzi the Iceman, who lived around 5,250 years ago in Europe, displays the oldest known tattoos (SN: 1/13/16), but researchers haven't found any of the tools used to make the Iceman's tattoos.
  • Excavations in 1985 revealed these turkey bones and other elements of a probable tattoo kit in a man's burial pit at Tennessee's Fernvale site.
  • Two turkey wing bones found in the same Fernvale grave display microscopic wear and pigment residues that likely resulted from applying pigment during tattooing.

Guidelines for Merging District Central Co-op Banks with State Ones

  • The Reserve Bank will consider amalgamation of District Central Co-operative Banks (DCCBs) with State Cooperative Banks (StCBs) subject to various conditions, including that a proposal should be made by the state government concerned.
  • The Banking Regulation (Amendment) Act, 2020 has been notified for the StCBs and DCCBs with effect from April 1, 2021. Amalgamations of such banks need to be sanctioned by the Reserve Bank of India.
  • RBI has come out with the guidelines after a few state governments approached it for amalgamation of DCCBs with StCBs as a two-tier Short-term Co-operative Credit Structure (STCCS).
  • As per the guidelines, RBI will consider proposals for amalgamation when the state government of the state makes a proposal to amalgamate one or more DCCB/s in the state with the StCB after conducting a detailed study of the legal framework.
  • Besides, there should be a an additional capital infusion strategy, assurance regarding financial support if required, projected business model with clear profitability and proposed governance model for the amalgamated bank.
  • The scheme of amalgamation has to be approved by the requisite majority of shareholders. Also, NABARD has to examine and recommend the proposal of the state government.

UK Considering all Options for Liberty Steel

  • As per reports, Britain is considering all options for Liberty Steel after the collapse of its main lender Greensill Capital, but nationalisation was the least likely route.
  • Liberty Steel, which employs 3,000 people in Britain, was planning to sell three 'non-core' UK plants as part of a major restructuring.

HDFC Further Sells Reliance Infra Shares

  • The country's largest mortgage lender HDFC Ltd has sold further shares of Reliance Infrastructure worth over Rs. 43 crore, which were held by it through the invocation of pledged shares.
  • The corporation has further sold 81,05,677 shares representing 3.08 per cent of the share capital of Reliance Infrastructure.
  • The sale was carried out through stock exchanges at the prevailing market price.
  • Earlier this month, the corporation had sold 52,88,507 shares, equivalent to 2.01 per cent, of Reliance Infrastructure for over Rs. 22.86 crore.
  • HDFC acquired shares of the Anil Ambani controlled engineering and construction major on account of invocation of pledge through Axis Trustee Services Ltd.

IPL 2021 Will Tentatively Resume in 3rd Week of September

  • As per reports, the postponed Indian Premier League will resume tentatively on September 18 or 19 in the UAE with as many as 10 double-headers expected to be played during a three-week window.
  • The final might be held on October 9 or 10. The three-week window will be enough for the league to complete its remaining 31 games for the season, a win-win scenario for all the primary stakeholders including the BCCI, franchises and broadcasters.

Shiva Thapa Secures 5th Successive Medal

  • Seasoned Indian boxer Shiva Thapa (64 kg) secured his fifth successive medal at the Asian Championships by advancing to the semifinals after out-punching Kuwait's Nader Odah in the last-eight stage.
  • Thapa won gold in 2013, bronze in 2015 and 2019, and silver in 2017. He is the most successful Indian boxer in the tournament's history.

Subodh Kumar Jaiswal is CBI Director for Two Years

  • Senior IPS officer Subodh Kumar Jaiswal was appointed as the new CBI chief for two years.
  • A 1985-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of Maharashtra cadre, Jaiswal is currently the director general of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
  • A Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led three-member selection committee had shortlisted his name for the post.
  • He has also served as Maharashtra's director general of police in the past.

Post of Director at NDRF Academy in Nagpur

  • The government has approved the creation of a post of Director at the National Disaster Response Force Academy in Nagpur.
  • The approval for the creation of the post in the Senior Administrative Grade (SAG) was given at a meeting of the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • With the creation of the post of the director at the NDRF academy, the command and control of the organisation will be entrusted to a senior and experienced officer, who can steer the institution as per the intended objectives.
  • The academy will impart skill-based practical training to over 5,000 personnel annually, from NDRF, SDRF and other stakeholders, besides disaster response agencies of SAARC and other countries.

Jayant Chaudhary is New RLD President

  • Jayant Chaudhary was appointed as the new national president of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD.
  • His elevation to the post comes following the demise of party president and his father Ajit Singh, who had succumbed to COVID-19.
  • The decision to elevate the 42-year-old Chaudhary, who was till now the party vice president, was taken during a virtual meeting of the party's national executive.

US Lifts Missile Restrictions on South Korea

  • South Korea can now develop ballistic missiles capable of reaching targets far beyond the Korean Peninsula, following the United States' approval to lift a 42-year-old restriction on its ally's missile development program.
  • South Korean and U.S. leaders announced the termination of missile guidelines imposed on Seoul in 1979. At the time, South Korea wanted to acquire American technology to develop its own missiles, and in return, the Asian nation agreed to limit the range of its missiles to 180 kilometers with a maximum payload of 500 kg.
  • In the face of increasing threats from North Korea, the guidelines have been revised four times. A 1997 revision allowed Seoul to develop a ballistic missile carrying a 500-kilogram warhead with a maximum range of 300 kilometers. Another revision was made in 2012 that extended the ballistic missile range to 800 kilometers with a 500-kilogram warhead.

Baltic States Vow to Tighten Defense Ties

  • The governments of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have agreed to tighten their defense cooperation, vowing to explore the joint acquisition of new rocket launchers amid fears of Russian military moves in their neighborhood, the countries said in a joint declaration.
  • The announcement follows a May 21 meeting of the three defense ministers in Siauliai, Lithuania, meant as a stepping stone toward the June 14 NATO summit in Brussels.

UP Schools Need to Provide RTE Admission Details of All Children

  • Private schools providing admission to poor children in UP under the Right to Education (RTE) Act will have to make online demand for reimbursement from the government. Full details of the economically weaker section (EWS) children who are admitted under the RTE Act will have to be uploaded on the portal.
  • The secondary education council implemented a new system to prevent disturbance in fee reimbursement and transparency regarding the number of children. A certificate from the block education officer will also be uploaded on the district basic education officer portal.
  • Director General School Education Vijay Kiran Anand issued instructions to all district basic education officers for the same.
  • Under the RTE Act, about 85000 children are enrolled in private schools in UP in the academic session 2020-21. Of these children, 25 per cent are admitted to Class 1.

  • A book has titled 'India and Asian Geopolitics: The Past, Present' is authored by Shivshankar Menon. He was the Prime Minister's National Security Adviser and Foreign Secretary, is exploring these phases in their historical context to tell the story of how India weathered the many geopolitical storms of the past in his latest book.
  • Menon has taken a different approach to history. He underscores the seriousness of China taking Tibet in 1950, which, according to him, was a pivotal moment in India-China relations, but challenges the argument that India failed to stop the Chinese invasion.
