Mrs. Ireland is New Mrs. World

  • Kate Schneider from Ireland has been named the new Mrs. World after the reigning titleholder resigned following an on-stage fracas in which she pulled the crown off the head of the winner of the Mrs. Sri Lanka beauty pageant.
  • Mrs. World Inc. received the resignation of Caroline Jurie and that the first runner-up, Mrs. Ireland Kate Schneider, therefore will be the new Mrs. World 2020.

U.S. Senate Confirms Vanita Gupta as Associate Attorney-General

  • The United States Senate voted 51-49 to confirm Indian-American Vanita Gupta as Associate Attorney-General, making her the first person of colour to occupy the third highest position at the Department of Justice.
  • From 2014 to 2017, Ms. Gupta served as the assistant attorney general for civil rights under President Barack Obama, where she advanced criminal justice reform, prosecuted hate crimes, protected voting rights and fought against discrimination.
  • Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski broke away from her party colleagues to support Gupta (46), that gave the Democrats 51 votes to see her through the historic confirmation.
  • Vice President Kamala Harris was present in the Senate to cast her vote in case of a tie. The two parties have 50 members each in the 100-seat United States Senate.
  • Ms. Gupta is also the first civil rights lawyer to serve at one of the top three positions at the Department of Justice.

India-Germany Sign Agreement to Prevent Plastic Waste Entering Oceans

  • The Governments of India and Germany signed an agreement for Technical Cooperation in enhancing practices to prevent plastic from entering the marine environment at a virtual ceremony in New Delhi. The project titled 'Cities Combating Plastic Entering the Marine Environment' will be implemented for a period of three and a half years.
  • The outcome of the project is completely in line with the objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban focusing on sustainable solid waste management and Prime Minister Modi's vision to phase out single-use plastic by 2022.
  • The agreement was signed between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH India on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

Tata Steel-HSBC Do Blockchain-enabled Paperless Trade Deal

  • Tata Steel, along with HSBC, has executed a blockchain-enabled paperless trade transaction. According to the company, this is a global first for the steel industry.
  • The live financial transaction involved the export of steel by Tata Steel to Universal Tube & Plastic Industries, UAE.
  • The end-to-end paperless transaction, executed over the Contour platform, was made possible by a unique collaboration pivoted by Tata Steel across the spectrum over the Contour and essDOCS platforms. The letter of credit was issued by HSBC UAE for Univ¬ersal Tube & Plastic Industries, UAE (importer), with HSBC India as the advising and negotiating bank for Tata Steel, India (exporter).
  • This transaction validates the commercial and operational viability of blockchain as an alternative to conventional exchanges for paper-based documentation.
  • Tata Steel has also signalled its intent to explore similar opportunities in other geographies as well.

Dish TV Promoter Jawahar Goel Pledges Shares to Rescue Essel Group

  • Jawahar Goel, promoter and managing director of Dish TV, has offered a substantial portion of his equity in the firm as security for the credit facilities availed of by the Essel Group, Subhash Chandra, chairman and group promoter, said.
  • Chandra's statement acquires significance as the group has struggled with debt for a while. Dish TV is a direct-to-home (DTH) company, and the stake of the promoter family – led by Goel, who is Chandra's brother – stands at 7.3 per cent.
  • However, this promoter stake has been pledged to lenders, who have been revoking shares — in just a year, the stake has fallen from nearly 55 per cent to 7.3 per cent. Consequently, pledged shares as a percentage of total equity have dropped to 3.74 per cent from 51 per cent.
  • Lenders such as YES Bank are now among the key shareholders in Dish TV, holding 24.2 per cent in the firm. Deutsche Bank, Housing Development Finance Corporation (HDFC), and IndusInd Bank hold 6.2 per cent, 4.7 per cent, and 3.8 per cent, respectively.

Ola Electric to Set up World's Largest EV Two-wheeler Charging Network

  • Ola Electric revealed its plans to set up the world's largest electric two-wheeler charging network. SoftBank-backed Ola Electric plans to provide charging solutions to all its electric two-wheeler customers. It unveiled the Ola Hypercharger Network, the charging network for its upcoming two-wheeler products starting with the Ola Scooter to be launched in the coming months.
  • The Ola Hypercharger Network will be the widest and densest electric two-wheeler charging network in the world, with more than 100,000 charging points across 400 cities. In the first year alone, Ola is setting up over 5,000 charging points across 100 cities in India, more than double the existing charging infrastructure in the country. Ola along with its partners would set it up at an estimated cost of $2 billion over a period of five years.

Russia Wants to Build its Own Space Station to Replace the ISS

  • The 23-year partnership between the United States and Russia that has kept the International Space Station (ISS) in orbit could soon come to an end, Russian officials suggested this week.
  • Yury Borisov, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, reportedly said in a government meeting that the nation might withdraw from the ISS in 2025. Borisov cited the deteriorating condition of the space station, which was launched in 1998 by NASA and the Russian space agency Roscosmos, as the primary reason for the potential departure.

Tokyo Olympics: Brazil and Germany Drawn in Same Pool

  • Defending champions Brazil have been clubbed in the same group as powerhouse Germany in the men's Olympic football tournament, the draw for which was announced in Zurich, Switzerland.
  • Besides the two footballing giants, the other two teams in Group D are Côte d'Ivoire and Saudi Arabia.
  • The following are the groupings: Group A: Japan, South Africa, Mexico, France. Group B: New Zealand, Korea Republic, Honduras, Romania. Group C: Egypt, Spain, Argentina, Australia. Group D: Brazil, Germany, Côte d'Ivoire, Saudi Arabia.

EC Bans Roadshows, Vehicle Rallies in West Bengal

  • Noting that COVID safety norms were being flouted in West Bengal during campaigning, the Election Commission banned roadshows and vehicle rallies in the state with immediate effect and said no public meeting having more than 500 people would be allowed.
  • The order said the commission has noted "with anguish" that many political parties and candidates are still not adhering to the prescribed safety norms during the public gatherings.
  • The orders will came into force from Thursday.

Out for Drill, Indonesian Submarine Goes Missing

  • Indonesian Navy is searching for a submarine with 53 people on board that lost contact and is seeking help from neighbouring Australia and Singapore in the hunt.
  • The submarine, KRI Nanggala-402, was conducting a torpedo drill in waters north of the island of Bali but failed to relay the results as expected.
  • The 1,395-tonne KRI Nanggala-402 was built in Germany in 1978, according to the Indonesian cabinet secretariat's website, and underwent a two-year refit in South Korea that was completed in 2012.

Puma India Signs Washington Sundar and Devdutt Padikkal

  • Global sports brand Puma has signed a long-term partnership deal with Washington Sundar and Devdutt Padikkal. The duo joins Puma's roaster of cricketers that include Indian captain Virat Kohli; wicketkeeper-batsman KL Rahul; women's national cricketer, Sushma Verma and names like Yuvraj Singh.
  • At Puma, we are committed to promoting new-age cricketing talent in India, Abhishek Ganguly, managing director, Puma India and Southeast Asia said. "Washington and Devdutt have displayed remarkable resilience and grit on field that has led to their meteoric rise as athletes. We have always believed in supporting not just established players, but also talent with immense future potential. We will continue to partner with young athletes, also at grassroots to give back to India's sporting ecosystem," he added further.

World Book and Copyright Day

  • World Book Day also known as World Book and Copyright Day is celebrated by UNESCO on April 23, every year. Books are our best friends, guiders, and philosophers. April 23 is a symbolic date for world literature because on this date in 1616 that Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. Hence, the day was selected to pay tribute to the great literary figures.
  • In the preparation for World Book and Copyright Day, UNESCO encouraged people to challenge themselves, to explore new topics, formats, or genres out of their ordinary. Our goal is to engage people in reading, and to have fun doing so! As a celebration of this year's World's Book and Copyright Day, UNESCO has created a 'Bookface' challenge.
  • Each year, UNESCO and the international organizations representing the three major sectors of the book industry -- publishers, booksellers, and libraries -- select the World Book Capital for a one-year period, through its own initiatives, the impetus of the Day's celebrations, effective April 23 each year.
  • As per UNESCO, the city of Tbilisi in Georgia was selected as the World Book Capital for 2021.

Spanish Language Day

  • UN Spanish Language Day is observed annually on 23 April. The event was established by UN's Department of Public Information in 2010 to seeking "to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six of its official working languages throughout the organization". The day was firstly observed on 12 October to celebrate the Dia de la Hispanidad in some Spanish-speaking countries for the discovery of American continent. Later the day was changed to 23 April to pay tribute to Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, who died on the 22 April in 1616.

AP Launches Jagananna Vidya Deevena Scheme

  • The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy released the first tranche of Rs. 672 crore under the Jagananna Vidya Deevena Scheme for the year 2021-22. This reimbursed the fees for 10.88 lakh students. So far, a total of Rs. 4, 879 crore have been disbursed under the Jagananna Vidya Deevena Scheme.
  • The main objective of the Jagananna Vidya Deevena Scheme is to provide scholarships to all the students who are not able to pay their fees because of their financial burden.
  • The scheme mainly focuses on students seeking higher education. It aims to provide fee reimbursement to more than 14 lakh students of the state.
  • The scheme will directly credit the amount into the accounts of students' mothers. Earlier, the money was transferred to the owners of the colleges.

  • IIT Madras has partnered with ACC Ltd and Ambuja Cements Ltd, the main operating companies of the cement major LafargeHolcim in India, to develop green and sustainable building solutions.
  • The rising global demand for building materials substantiates the need for sustainable solutions. This academic collaboration is born out of the Company's vision to re-invent how the world is built to make it greener, smarter and sustainable for all.
  • The collaborative research study will be financially aided by LafargeHolcim Innovation Centre (LHIC) focusing on 'Binder Optimization for Alternate Reinforcements'.
  • This research will delve into the optimized use of low CO2 binders with a combination of alternative reinforcement, as a potential substitute for conventional steel rebar, thereby significantly reducing the CO2 footprints of construction.

IIM-Ahmedabad Inaugurates 16th Batch of the MBA-PGPX Programme

  • The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) announced the commencement of the 16th batch of the MBA-PGPX programme virtually due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases. The MBA-PGPX is a one-year full-time residential Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives.
  • The MBA-PGPX programme is designed to enable high performing professionals to accelerate their growth to leadership positions, as well as entrepreneurs to scale up and expand their business ventures.
  • Launched in 2006, more than 1,500 students have graduated from the MBA-PGPX till date. The programme has seen a steady increase in aspiring students, which has, in turn, led to an increase in the intake of the students. The increased student intake has enhanced the classroom diversity in the class enabling better peer learning.
