Turkey Summons China's Ambassador over Twitter Posts

  • Turkey summoned China's ambassador after the embassy suggested on Twitter that it could take action against two Turkish politicians who criticised Beijing's treatment of its Muslim Uyghur community.
  • The Chinese Embassy tagged Meral Aksener, the head of the opposition Good Party, and Ankara's mayor, Mansur Yavas, in two Twitter posts in which it defended Beijing's policies and said "the Chinese side reserves its right to a rightful response." The comment was widely interpreted as a threat against the two politicians and caused a social media outrage in Turkey.
  • The embassy tagged Ms. Aksener and Mr. Yavas after the two marked with Twitter posts the killing of Uyghurs by Chinese forces during an uprising in 1990.

Global Powers Urge Somali Leaders to Compromise

  • Somalia's international partners including UN, the US, Canada, the African Union and several European nations have called on leaders to compromise to allow elections to take place in the country.
  • As Somalis prepare for the Holy Month of Ramadan, the international partners appeal to federal and regional leaders to reach agreement and make necessary compromises to ensure elections can be held without further delay, to allow Somalia to move forward.
  • The Somali government is committed to making fruitful consultations between the government and member states of the federal government possible.

Airtel to Transfer 800 MHz Spectrum in 3 Circles to Jio

  • Reliance Jio signed an agreement with Bharti Airtel for acquisition of right to use spectrum in the 800 MHz band in Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Mumbai circles through spectrum trading.
  • After the transfer, Jio's spectrum footprint will be enhanced in 800 Mhz band to 2x15 Mhz in mumbai circle and 2x10 Mhz in Andhra Pradesh and Delhi circles.
  • Airtel's 800 MHz spectrum in Andhra Pradesh (3.75 MHz), Delhi (1.25 MHz) and Mumbai (2.50 MHz) will be transferred to Jio.
  • The trading agreement is in accordance with the Spectrum Trading Guidelines issued by the Department of Telecommunications.
  • The aggregate value for the right to use this spectrum is Rs. 1,497 crore, inclusive of present value of associated deferred payment liablity of Rs. 459 crore, subject to any transaction related adjustments.

Govt. Appoints S. Ramann as SIDBI Chairman & Managing Director

  • The government appointed S. Ramann as Chairman and Managing Director of Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).
  • The appointment is for a period of three years from the date of his assuming the charge or until further orders.
  • In December, Banks Board Bureau, the headhunter for state-owned banks and financial institutions, had recommended his name for the post.
  • Ramann, a 1991-batch Indian Audit & Accounts Service officer, is currently the CEO of National E-Governance Services Ltd, India's first Information Utility.

Adani Group 3rd Indian Conglomerate to Cross USD 100 bn in m-cap

  • Billionaire Gautam Adani's ports-to-energy conglomerate has become India's third group to cross USD 100 billion in market capitalisation with shares of four of its six listed companies soaring to an all-time high.
  • After starting out as a commodities trader in the late 1980s, Gautam Adani has over two decades built an empire that now spans from mines, ports and power plants to airports, data centre, city gas and defence.

Astronomers Discover Three New Galaxy Clusters

  • Dr. McDonald's team identified 11 cluster candidates around X-ray, radio, and mid-IR-bright sources, including six well-known clusters, two false associations of foreground and background clusters, and three new candidates: CHIPS 1356-3421, CHIPS 1911+4455 and CHIPS2155-3727.
  • With additional follow-up data from NASA's Chandra X-ray telescope, they confirmed two candidates: CHIPS 1356-3421 and CHIPS 1911+4455.
  • CHIPS 1911+4455 is similar in many ways to the rapidly-star-forming Phoenix cluster, but with a highly disturbed X-ray morphology on large scales.
  • This cluster invites further study, however, as it has a twisted shape with two extended arms, whereas all other rapidly-cooling clusters are circular.

WhatsApp Roles out New Features for Entrepreneurs

  • WhatsApp announced two new features to make it easier for people to know what's available and for entrepreneurs to quickly sell their products on WhatsApp for Business.
  • The company said that it is now providing businesses the ability to create and manage their catalog from WhatsApp web/desktop rather than just mobile phones.
  • Since many businesses manage their inventory from a computer, this new option will make it quick and easy to add new items or services so their customers know what's available.

Hurkacz Beats Teen Sinner to Win Miami Open

  • Poland's Hubert Hurkacz claimed his first ATP Masters 1000 title by beating Italian teenager Jannik Sinner in the Miami Open final.
  • Hurkacz won 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 to become the first Polish singles player to win one of the ATP's top-level events.
  • The world number 37 is the lowest-ranked player to win a Masters event since Tomas Berdych in Paris in 2005.
  • Sinner, 19, was the youngest Masters finalist since Rafael Nadal in 2005.
  • Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer all skipped this year's tournament, though Hurkacz still beat world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas and world number eight Andrey Rublev on his way to the final.

FIFA Bans Chad Indefinitely from Global Football over Government Interference

  • FIFA has banned Chad from global football until further notice over government interference in the running of the country's football federation.
  • The move comes after the Minister of Youth and Sports dissolved the Federation of Chad Football Associations in March.
  • After the announcement by the Chadian government the Confederation of African Football disqualified the national team from last month's final two rounds of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations.
  • Chad do not have any upcoming international fixtures having been knocked out of 2022 World Cup qualifying by Sudan in 2019.

Road in Ayodhya to be Named after Kothari Brothers

  • Uttar Pradesh deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said that he will construct a road in Ayodhya in memory of Kothari brothers, who were killed in police firing in Ayodhya on October 30, 1990.
  • At many times the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, amid the ongoing West Bengal assembly elections, exhorted the voters of the state to remember the sacrifice of Kothari brothers, who had lost their lives while agitating for the holy site in Ayodhya.

  • Former Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan has been appointed as an expert member of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Southern Zone in Chennai. The serving expert member in the Southern Bench Saibal Dasgupta has been sent to Eastern Zonal Bench in Kolkata.
  • When Girija Vaidyanathan had initially applied for the post, Chennai-based environmental advocacy group Poovulagin Nanbargal had filed a Public Interest Litigation before the Madras High Court challenging it. Admitting the petition, the first bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy had directed the government and Girija Vaidyanathan to file their responses in six weeks.

Development of Russia's New-generation ICBM to Begin in 2023-2024

  • As per reports, the development of Russia's new-generation intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), Kedr, will begin at the turn of 2023-2024.
  • Research work on Kedr has been financed under the current state arms procurement program, which is in effect until 2027. Technological development will begin in 2023-2024.
  • According to the source, solid-fuel Kedr ICBMs are to replace Yars systems at the turn of 2030. Just like their predecessor, the new system will have mobile and silo-based modifications.

Ex-Union Minister Digvijaysinh Zala Passes Away

  • Former Union Environment Minister and MLA from Gujarat's Wankaner Digvijaysinh Zala passed away at the age of 88.
  • He was the head of the erstwhile princely state of Wankaner in Saurashtra.
  • Zala was an MLA from Wankaner for the years 1962-67 as an independent candidate and as a member of the Swatantra Party from 1967-71.
  • He, then, joined the Congress and became a Member of Parliament from Surendranagar for two terms from 1979 to 1989.
  • Establishing the Environment ministry under Prime minister Indira Gandhi, he became the first Environment Minister of the country from 1982 to 1984.
  • He also represented India in the United Nations on more than one occasion, speaking on environmental issues facing the world.

Dandi Padyatra as Part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav held in Dandi, Gujarat Ends

  • The Vice President, M. Venkaiah Naidu graced the colourful closing ceremony of the 25-day long commemorative Dandi Padyatra as part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav near National Salt Satyagraha Memorial , Dandi, Gujarat. The function was organised by the Ministry of Culture and State government of Gujarat. Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat; Prahlad Singh Patel, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Tourism and Culture; Vijay Rupani, Chief Minister of Gujarat and others were present at the event.
  • Addressing on the occasion, the Vice President said that Gandhi's iconic Dandi Salt March was a watershed moment in our freedom struggle. Shri Naidu said that it altered the course of history. "The Dandi March we are symbolically revisiting today signifies our nation's ability to stay united when we are faced with challenges", he said.
