Senate Confirms Dr. Vivek Murthy as U.S. Surgeon General
Indian-American physician Vivek Murthy has been confirmed by the Senate as President Joe Biden's surgeon general, a role in which his top priority would be responding to the coronavirus pandemic that has severely hit the country.
Dr. Murthy would occupy the position of America's Surgeon General for the second time. In 2011, President Barack Obama tapped him to serve on the advisory group on prevention, health promotion, and integrative and public health.
In 2013, Obama nominated Dr. Murthy to be the surgeon general. He was the youngest ever to hold the office at the age of 37. However, he had to abruptly leave the position during the Trump administration.
Ethiopia PM Ahmed Abiy Admits Eritrea Forces in Tigray
Ethiopia's Prime Minister has acknowledged for the first time that troops from neighbouring Eritrea have been in the Tigray region following the outbreak of conflict in November.
For months both countries have denied that troops crossed the border.
Abiy Ahmed told MPs that Eritrean forces came fearing they would be attacked by Tigray's regional fighters.
The conflict began after the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) captured military bases in the region.
The TPLF had been the ruling party in the northern Ethiopian region, but had a massive fall-out with Mr Abiy over the future of Ethiopia's ethnically based federal system and its role in government.
Niger Court Upholds Bazoum's Win
The runner-up in Niger's recent election has denounced a court ruling that upheld Mohamed Bazoum as the winner.
Mahamane Ousmane - who was President in the 1990s before being overthrown in a coup - still maintains he won.
He's called on people throughout the country to take part in a peaceful protest march.
With President Mahamadou Issoufou stepping down after two terms, the swearing in of Mr. Bazoum next month will be the first ever democratic transfer of power in Niger.
As per reports, Airtel Africa will sell 1,424 towers in Madagascar and Malawi to Helios Towers for USD 119 million.
The two companies have also entered into agreement for tower assets in Chad and Gabon but particulars of the deal were not disclosed.
The Group's tower portfolios in these two markets together comprise 1,229 towers which form part of the Group's wireless telecommunications infrastructure network.
Airtel Africa has also signed a pact with Helios Towers for sale of additional 195 sites across Madagascar and Malawi over the three years following completion for USD 11 million.

British FMCG major RB Plc rebranded itself as Reckitt while retaining "company's heritage".
The new brand identity and iconography is more recognisable and is designed to tell the story of the organisation's purpose and its transformation, the company said in a statement, which owns popular brands like Dettol soap and Lizol disinfectant.
The implementation of the new brand will be delivered over a three-year timeline, using the natural replacement cycles of the business to manage an impactful transition in a cost-effective way.
Amazon Names Selipsky to Lead Cloud after Jassy Becomes CEO
Adam Selipsky will lead Amazon Web Services, replacing Andy Jassy, who is set to succeed Jeff Bezos as Amazon's chief executive officer. Bezos will take the role of executive chairman in the third quarter of this year.
Selipsky has been CEO of Tableau since 2016, guiding the Seattle company through a reboot of its data visualization software business and its $15.3 billion sale to Salesforce.com in 2019. Before joining Tableau, Selipsky was Jassy's right hand at Amazon's cloud unit, serving in a chief operating officer-like role that saw him overseeing the unit's sales, marketing, technical support and customer service. He joined the company in 2005.
LG Electronics to Step Up Development of 6G Network Technology
LG Electronics has joined forces with two other partners to develop next-generation 6G network technology.
LG signed a partnership with Keysight Technologies, a US-based electronics test and measurement firm, and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST), South Korea's leading research university.
Under the agreement, the three sides will cooperate in developing technologies related to terahertz, a key frequency band for 6G communications. They target to complete 6G research by 2024. LG said that the 6G network is expected to be commercialised in 2029.
LG established a 6G research centre with KAIST in 2019 and signed an agreement with the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science last year to study 6G technologies.
Keysight Technologies is a major supplier of 6G terahertz test equipment. It has been providing equipment to LG and KAIST's 6G research centre.
Maratha Quota Granted by Maharashtra Govt. Constitutional
Maharashtra has the legislative competence for granting reservation quota to Marathas and its decision is Constitutional as the 102nd amendment does not denude a state of the power to declare its list of Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC), the Centre told the Supreme Court.
The 102nd Constitution amendment Act of 2018 inserted Articles 338B, which deals with the structure, duties and powers of the National Commission for Backward Class (NCBC), and 342A dealing with power of the President to notify a particular caste as SEBC as also of Parliament to change the list.
A five-judge Constitution bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan was told by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, that in its view the SEBC Act, 2018, of Maharashtra granting reservation to people of the Maratha community in the state in jobs and admissions is Constitutional.
Cabinet Approves MoC Signed between India & Japan in Water Resources Field
The Cabinet was apprised of a Memorandum of Cooperation signed between India and Japan, aimed at achieving water security, improved irrigation facility and sustainability in water resources development.
"The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was apprised of the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed between Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India and Water and Disaster Management Bureau, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Japan in the field of Water Resources," a statement said.
This MoC was signed for development of a long-term cooperation in the field of water and delta management, and water technology in order to increase the exchange of information, knowledge, technology and scientific allied experience, as well as implementation of joint projects between the two countries.

The board of directors has considered and approved the re-appointment of Umang Vohra, Managing Director, designated as 'Managing Director and Global Chief Executive Officer' of the company, for a further period of five years w.e.f. April 1, 2021 to March 31,2026.
Vohra had joined Cipla in 2015 and has been the MD & Global CEO of the company since September 1, 2016.
Hollywood Actor George Segal Dies
George Segal, the Oscar-nominated actor who sparred with Richard Burton in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, romanced Glenda Jackson in A Touch of Class and won laughs in the TV sitcom The Goldbergs, died at the age of 87.
Segal's acting career began on the New York stage and television in the early 1960s. He quickly moved into films, playing an artist in the star-studded ensemble drama Ship of Fools and a scheming, wily American corporal in a World War Two prisoner-of-war camp in King Rat in 1965.
Social Justice Ministry to Launch Poshan Abhiyan for Elderly
Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment aims to launch 'Poshan Abhiyan' for the Elderly to provide them 'nutrition support'.
Under the mission, supports will be provided to indigent elders who are not staying in Old Age Homes and are victims of malnutrition. Mission will focus on procuring healthy food material which are available locally to serve hot-cooked mid-day meals. Scheme will be implemented by "Gram Panchayats and Urban Municipalities". 'Senior Citizens Welfare Fund' will be utilized to fund & implement the mission.
Government of India has been implementing several schemes and programmes under an Umbrella Scheme for Senior Citizens called "National Action Plan for Senior Citizens". This scheme provides for financial security, shelter & welfare, healthcare & Nutrition, protection of life & property, awareness generation and active & productive ageing.
IIT Guwahati and Numaligarh Refinery Limited Join Hands to Support Students Start-up
A tripartite incubation support agreement has been signed between IIT Guwahati, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) - a public sector company, and Vigitrics Private Limited on March 17, 2021. The agreement was signed by Dean (Industrial Interactions & Special Initiatives) IIT Guwahati, Prof. G. Krishnamoorthy, Senior Chief General Manager (Corporate affairs) NRL, Mr Nikunja Borthakur, and Director, Vigitrics ,Mr. Pharvesh Salman Choudhary in presence of Director, IIT Guwahati Dr. T.G. Sitharam, other officials of NRL, IIT Guwahati and Vigitrics Private Ltd at IIT Guwahati.
Vigitrics Private Limited, a start-up company aiming to develop an Intelligent Drowsiness Detection System, will be incubated at the Technology Incubation Centre of IIT Guwahati (IITG-TIC). The start-up company is funded by NRL through its Start-up Funding Program iDEATION. The start-up was founded jointly by two students from IIT Guwahati and a student from Tezpur University, Assam. The co-founders of Vigitrics Private Limited are Pharvesh Salman Choudhary, Director Mousumi Das, Director and Satyabrat Malla Bujarbaruah, Director.
IIT Madras & African-Asian Rural Development Organisation Conduct E-training Programme on Rural Technologies
Indian Institute of Technology Madras is partnering with African-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO) to organize an e-training program on technologies for rural areas and their livelihoods (farm and non-farm) with a focus on creating access to value chains and markets.
The training program, which began, would be conducted till 1st April 2021. The event is being organised by Team SIDDHI, the technology and Sustainable Development platform of IIT Madras with an emphasis on social relevance and global impact.
Select technologies, solutions, and approaches developed by IIT Madras in collaboration with its partner institutions would be showcased during the programme. The course is being held for the benefit of middle and senior-level executives from government departments, ministries, and agriculture engineers and scientists engaged in policy formulation, implementation, planning, and appraisals.
A team of professors and students of Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College discovered a Nayak period inscription on a stone pillar at Papamadai of Avaniapuram village.
The team discovered two stone pillars, around 10 feet in height and 1.5 feet in width, with 19 lines of inscriptions. Mr. Rajagopal said that according to the inscription, Algatchiyar Pillai had thanked King Veerappa Nayak for donating a land for construction of a sluice for irrigation. The guidance of renowned archaeologist C. Santhalingam was sought in deciphering the message of the inscription.
