North Korea Closes its Embassy in Malaysia

  • North Korea closed its embassy in Malaysia after announcing that it is cutting ties with Kuala Lumpur over the extradition of its citizen to the United States for alleged money laundering.
  • A North Korean diplomat called the extradition an "unpardonable crime.
  • As per reports, the North Korean businessman living in Malaysia is accused of supplying prohibited luxury items from Singapore to Pyongyang, in violation of UN sanctions.
  • Malaysia's top court ruled that the businessman can be extradited to the US, rejecting his appeal challenging the extradition request.

Iran in No Hurry to Revive Nuclear Deal

  • Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that his country was in "no hurry" to revive the nuclear deal and warned the U.S. its current policy toward the Islamic Republic was doomed to fail unless sanctions are effectively and fully removed. Khamenei's speech, marking the Persian new year in Iran, highlighted his impatience with the Biden administration's decision to maintain sanctions and continue a standoff that started almost three years ago when former President Donald Trump abandoned the multilateral, 2015 nuclear deal.
  • Khamenei dismissed the dispute between Washington and Tehran over which country should make the first move to return to its obligations in order to revive the accord that meant to limit the country's nuclear program to peaceful means.

Mauritania and Qatar Resume Diplomatic Ties

  • Mauritania has resumed diplomatic relations with Qatar after a four-year freeze.
  • Foreign ministers from both countries held talks in Doha, Qatar, on Sunday, on the resumption of ties.
  • After intensive contacts over the past week and with much appreciated support from the Sultanate of Oman, the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and Qatar decided to resume diplomatic ties.
  • The West African country cut links with Qatar in 2017, over allegations that it supported terrorists, following on the lead by other Arab powers, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates that had done the same.

Reliance Affiliate Picks 3/4th of gas from Own CBM Block

  • Reliance Industries Ltd has sold three-fourth of the gas from coal seams in Madhya Pradesh to an affiliate of the company at a price of just over $6 at current oil prices.
  • India Gas Solutions Private Limited, a 50: 50 joint venture of RIL and UK's bp, bought 0.62 million standard cubic meters per day out of 0.82 mmscmd gas bid out in an auction last week.
  • State-owned gas utility GAIL India Ltd cornered 0.17 mmscmd while 0.03 mmscmd was picked by Reliance Gas Pipeline - the entity that transports gas from the coal-bed methane (CBM) blocks in Madhya Pradesh to consumers.
  • Reliance had last month bids for 0.82 mmscmd of coal gas from the Sohagpur coal-bed methane (CBM) block for one year beginning April 1, 2021

Saudi Aramco to Prioritise Energy Supply to China

  • Saudi Aramco will ensure China's energy security remains its highest priority for the next 50 years and beyond as new and existing energy sources run in parallel for some time.
  • Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, retained its position as China's top supplier in the first two months this year, with volumes up 2.1% to 1.86 million barrels per day (bpd).
  • The kingdom beat Russia to keep its ranking as China's top crude supplier in 2020 despite unprecedented production cuts in a pact between the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies to balance global markets after demand plunged during the COVID-19 pandemic.

India and France Working on Third Space Mission

  • India and France are working on the "Third Joint Satellite Mission" at the time when the bilateral space collaboration between both the countries is entering into multiple domains even in the human spaceflight programme.
  • Several French companies are interested to tap into the opportunities provided by the recent reforms in the space sector by the government. France is also the largest partner of India in Space. ISRO highlighted that, ISRO and French space agency Centre National d'Études Spatiales (CNES) have worked on the two joint missions namely the 'Megha-Tropiques' which was launched in the year 2011 and the 'SARAL-Altika' which was launched in the year 2013.
  • The officials also highlighted that, the ISRO and CNES have completed the feasibility study in order to realise earth observation satellite mission with the help of thermal infrared imager called "Thermal infraRed Imaging Satellite for High resolution Natural resource Assessment (TRISHNA)". Now both the agencies are working to finalise an implementing arrangement for the joint development. India is also working with the France on joint experiments & accommodation of the scientific instruments with respect to the space missions. Two agencies have also finalised all the interface control documents to accommodate the 'ARGOS' instrument of CNES in the OCEANSAT-3 satellite of ISRO.

Table Tennis: Sharath, Manika Seal Olympic Berth in Mixed Doubles

India got its best shot at a maiden table tennis medal at the Olympics on Saturday when Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra became the first Indian pairing to qualify for the mega event in Tokyo, beating world no. 8 duo of Sang-Su Lee and Jihee Jeon 4-2 in the final of the Asian Qualification Tournament.

Ronaldo Italian League Player of the Year

  • Cristiano Ronaldo was named the Italian league player of the year for the second successive time.
  • Ronaldo won the prize in 2019 after his debut season at Juventus. The awards did not take place last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • Ronaldo scored 31 goals in 33 league matches last season and helped Juventus to a record-extending ninth successive Serie A title.
  • Juventus forward Cristiana Girelli received the best female player award.

Lee Zii Jia Win All England Open Men's Single Title

  • Malaysia's 22-year-old Lee Zii Jia won the All England Open men's title after beating defending champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark in the summit clash.
  • Lee Zii Jia, who had defeated world number one Momota Kento on Friday, beat Axelsen 30-29, 20-22, 21-9 in a more than thrilling match which lasted for one hour and 14 minutes.
  • The win for Lee Zii Jia also meant that he became the first Malaysian since Lee Chong Wei in 2017 to win the title.
  • In the women's single final, Japan's Nozomi Okuhara defeated Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong in straight games (21-12, 21-16).

PM Narendra Modi Launches Jal Shakti Abhiyan

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on the occasion of World Water Day, launched the 'Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain' campaign via video conferencing.
  • This movement will take place across India based on the theme of 'catch the rain, where it falls, when it falls.' It will strengthen water conservation efforts happening in our country.
  • Union Ministry of Jal Shakti and the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the first river-linking project of Ken-Betwa in the virtual launch.
  • This campaign will be implemented till November 30.

Govt. to Set up Empowered Panel for Manufacturing in High Technology Area

  • The government will set up an empowered committee for manufacturing on high technology area, according to a circular issued by the cabinet secretariat. The committee will be headed by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
  • The move is expected to facilitate investments and promote manufacturing in technology intensive sectors including semiconductors.
  • Cabinet secretary Rajiv Gauba, deputy national security advisor Rajinder Khanna, officials from external affairs ministry and department for promotion of industry and internal trade (DPIIT), Tata Sons Chairman N Chnadrasekaran, Bharat
  • Forge Chairman Baba Kalyani, among others will also be a part of the committee.
  • Top officials from the finance ministry, including economic affairs secretary, expenditure secretary, revenue secretary will also be invited in the meetings of the committee.

India Has World's Fourth Strongest Military

  • According to a study released by defence website Military Direct, China has the strongest military force in the world while India stands at number four.
  • "The USA, despite their enormous military budgets, comes in 2nd place with 74 points, followed by Russia with 69, India at 61 and then France with 58. The UK just about makes the Top 10, coming in 9th place with a score of 43.
  • As per the study, ultimate military strength index was calculated after taking into consideration various factors including budgets, number of inactive and active military personnel, total air, sea, land and nuclear resources, average salaries, and weight of equipment.

India, Pakistan and China to Hold Joint Anti-terrorism Exercise

  • Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) members including India, Pakistan and China will participate in a joint anti-terrorism exercise this year.
  • The decision to hold the joint exercise named "Pabbi-Antiterror-2021" was announced by the eight-member bloc on March 1, during the 36th meeting of the Council of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
  • The other members of SCO include Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
  • The representatives of the member states also approved the draft program of cooperation for 2022-2024 to counter-terrorism, separatism and extremism.

Russian Jet Makers Sukhoi, MiG United under Single Program

  • Having long been on the agenda, a series of structural changes are on the way for Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) and leading aircraft manufacturers Sukhoi and MiG. The Russian state-owned conglomerate Rostec will unite the three entities into a single corporate aircraft building center in a move that will consolidate the management of aircraft programs and other assets of the UAC.
  • The engineering and design functions of the group will be divided into a separate center, which will be located in Moscow and will include all aviation design bureaus.
  • The report highlighted that the reforms are intended to increase the economic sustainability of UAC, optimize the administrative and managerial staff and reduce non-production costs and debt burden.

Acclaimed Egyptian Feminist Nawal Saadawi Passes Away

  • Nawal Saadawi, a renowned Egyptian feminist, psychiatrist and novelist, whose writings have stirred controversy for decades in an overwhelming conservative society, died of age-related health problems in Cairo. She was 89.
  • As a fierce advocate of women rights in Egypt and the Arab world, her writings focused mainly on feminism, domestic violence against women and religious extremism. She was a vocal opponent of female genital mutilation in Egypt and worldwide.
  • When she published her famous book, "Women and Sex" in 1972, she faced a storm of criticism and condemnation from Egypt's political and religious establishment. She also lost her job at the Health Ministry.
  • Saadawi was the founder and head of the Arab Women's Solidarity Association and co-founder of the Arab Association for Human Rights.

Former SEBI Chairman G. V. Ramakrishna Dies

  • G. V. Ramakrishna, a former chairperson of India's market regulator, died in Chennai. He was 91.
  • Ramakrishna, as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, had five decades of government service, working as a diplomat and policy expert. He was asked to lead the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) in 1990 when it lacked the legal status as market regulator, using his four-year term to protect the interests of small investors. He then became the first chairperson of Disinvestment Commission in 1996 to manage the government's exit from state-owned businesses.
  • Ramakrishna was the minister of economic affairs at the Embassy in Washington in 1972 and India's Ambassador to the European Economic Community (European Union) in 1989, Hindu Business Line reported.
  • Ramakrishna he worked at the Finance Ministry and Ministries of Industry, Steel, Coal and Petroleum. He was adviser in the Planning Commission in 1981 and Member in 1994.

World Water Day

  • World Water Day is observed annually across the globe on March 22 with the purpose of highlighting the importance of water and raising awareness about the water crisis that the world faces. According to the United Nations (UN) website, the main focus of the day is to support the achievement of sustainable development goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
  • The resolution to observe World Water Day was first adopted by the UN General Assembly on December 22, 1992, after which March 22 was declared as World Water Day and is celebrated around the world since 1993.
  • The theme of World Water Day 2021 is "Valuing Water" and has been chosen to highlight the value of water in our daily lives. "The value of water is about much more than its price – water has enormous and complex value for our households, food, culture, health, education, economics and the integrity of our natural environment.

India Participates in Nowruz Celebrations

  • The Indian Embassy in Beijing participated in the "Nowruz" which was held at the Secretariat of "Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)" in Beijing, China. Nowruz is the Iranian and Persian New Year Festival.
  • The celebration was participated by the Indian Ambassador Vikram Misri, along with the diplomats of other SCO member countries which include China, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan and India. More than 500 guests took part in the festival. During the celebrations, the Indian embassy showcased the performances of Yoga, Kathak and Indian cuisine. On the occasion, the Indian Ambassador also planted a Pine tree sapling as a symbol of nurturing of the friendship between India and SCO.
  • Nowruz is the Iranian New Year which is also known as Persian New Year. The New Year starts on the spring equinox or the March equinox which is marked as the first day of Farvardin. Farvardin is the first month of Iranian solar calendar. The day is celebrated across the world by several ethno-linguistic groups. Nowruz finds its origin in the Iranian and Zoroastrian culture. But the festival is celebrated by the diverse communities for 3,000 years in the Central Asia, Western Asia, Black Sea Basin, Caucasus, Balkans and South Asia. The Nowruz has been celebrated since 11th century CE when the Iranian calendar was reformed but the United Nations officially recognized "International Day of Nowruz" in the year 2010 with the adoption of UN resolution 64/253. The timing of Nowruz in Iran is based on the Solar Hijri algorithmic calendar. It is based on the precise astronomical observations.

Delhi Government to Mentor Girls of Classes 9-12 under Education Mentoring Programme

  • The Delhi Government launched 'Education Mentoring Programme' for girls of classes 9 to 12. Over 200 students from Indira Gandhi Delhi Technological University for Women are going to mentor as many as 1,000 girl students of Delhi government schools in grades 9 to 12 under the AAP dispensation's 'Education Mentoring Programme'.
  • The Delhi Government initiative comes under 'Youth for Education' initiative, which focuses on mentoring girls studying in grades 9 to 12.
  • Under the Education Mentoring Programme, each IGDTUW mentor will guide five girls studying in grades 9 to 12, clearing their doubts related to careers in STEM, share strategies for clearing entrance exams, support in accessing learning resources and motivate them as they transition from school to colleges and careers.

  • Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Science & technology Dr. Harsh Vardhan inaugurated the new Advanced High Resolution Microscopy Facility at National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) and Unveiled the 4 Star GRIHA Certification of Center of Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB) Lab and Admin Building at Mohali in Punjab.
  • Both NABI & CIAB are autonomous institutes under Dept. of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology.
  • Following the gathering Dr. Harsh Vardhan urged both the institutes to address the problems of hunger & malnutrition and to bring nutritional revolution in the country. Minister emphasized that with government impetus on doubling the farmers income by 2022-23, NABI and CIAB's roles are crucial to achieve this ambitious goal.

Arunachal Gets First Formal Indigenous Knowledge System School

  • Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has inaugurated the state's first formal indigenous language and knowledge system school in East Kameng district.
  • The first-of-its-kind school called 'Nyubu Nyvgam Yerko' was inaugurated at Rang village near Seppa.
  • Mr. Khandu said the school will help in promoting and preserving indigenous traditions, culture and language.
  • He lauded the Donyi Polo Cultural and Charitable Trust for the initiative and Pai Dawe for donating land for the Gurukul-type institution.
  • Mr. Khandu said that his government is committed to preserving the indigenous culture of the state and has established the Department of Indigenous Affairs, for which he has earned the praise of people from even the neighbouring states.

Glenstone Museum Gifts Katharina Fritssch Rooster Sculpture to National Gallery

  • In a move of regional collegiality, a sculpture of a bright blue rooster by artist Katharina Fritsch has now entered the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it has been on view on the museum's east building roof terrace.
  • Glenstone, the private museum in nearby Potomac, Maryland, founded by ARTnews Top 200 Collectors Emily and Mitchell Rales, had offered the 14-foot-tall work Hahn/Cock (2013) as a long-term loan to the NGA since 2016, and ultimately decided to gift it to the D.C. institution.
  • As per reports, the work was given "in honour of the resilience of the American people during the COVID-19 pandemic." The sculpture is being illuminated on a nightly basis during the museum's temporary closure of its east and west buildings, harkening back to its illumination in April 2020 as part of a campaign to recognize essential workers.
  • Fritsch created Hahn/Cock for the "Fourth Plinth" public art series in London's Trafalgar Square in 2013. Using 3-D printing, the artist modeled the monumental sculpture after a taxidermy rooster.

  • The Saudi Tourism Authority (STA) has opened a commercial office for the UK and Ireland as part of its strategy to engage the tourism trade in key source markets.
  • The move is part of a plan to have representative offices in 15 markets around the world including China, India and the GCC among others, to expand the reach of the activities of the body.
  • STA is focused on enhancing its ability to deliver a truly global scale offering by investing resources in the network that will drive our business for the future.
  • The UK and Ireland office will be responsible for trade marketing activities, expanding the reach and relevance of Saudi's tourism offer and working with tour operators.
