Prachanda Suggests Dropping 'Maoist Centre' from Party Name

  • As per reports, Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, Chief of Nepal's CPN-Maoist Centre (MC), has proposed to drop "Maoist Centre" from the party's name to make it acceptable for communist forces in the country, who do not like Maoism, to join it.
  • CPN-MC member Shiv Kumar Mandal said that the former PM was always in favour of unity among all communist forces of the country and suggested that if dropping "Maoist Centre" from the party's name could help unite these forces, then the party should be ready for that.

UK Sanctions Allies of Syrian President Assad

  • Britain announced sanctions on six allies of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, including his Foreign Minister and close advisers.
  • The Syrian civil war is 10 years old: in mid-March, 2011, peaceful pro-democracy protests developed into a multi-sided conflict that sucked in world powers, killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions more.
  • The Assad regime has subjected the Syrian people to a decade of brutality for the temerity of demanding peaceful reform.
  • Those sanctioned include Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad, Assad adviser Luna al-Shibl, financier Yassar Ibrahim, businessman Muhammad Bara' Al-Qatirji, Republican Guard commander Malik Aliaa and Army Major Zaid Salah.

Canada Calls on China to Stop Persecution of Uighurs and Tibetans

  • Conservative party of Canada has called on China to stop the persecution of people who practice their religion or belief including Christians, Tibetans and Uighurs.
  • On the 62nd anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day, Canadian Leader of the Opposition Erin O'Toole said that Canada must stand behind those who advocate for religious freedom.

Tech Mahindra to Buy Stake in Perigord Asset Holdings

  • Tech Mahindra will acquire a 70 per cent stake in Ireland-based Perigord Asset Holdings Ltd for around Rs. 182 crore and plans to buy the remaining 30 per cent shareholding over a period of four years.
  • Tech Mahindra said that the acquisition will help in augmenting its expertise in the global pharmaceutical, healthcare and life science sectors.
  • For the financial year ended December 31, 2020, Perigord had reported revenues of around Rs. 170 crore.
  • The acquisition is a part of Tech Mahindra's long-term growth plan to build presence across key markets in Ireland, Germany, USA, and India with enhanced global delivery.

Bitcoin Crosses $60K Mark for First Time

  • With a sign of acceptance among the mainstream investors, the world's largest cryptocurrency Bitcoin surpassed a record high of $60,000.
  • According to the website CoinMarketCap, the cryptocurrency hit $60,197 and continued to hover around $60,000.
  • Bitcoin has tripled in value over the last three months—it was worth $20,000 in December—bolstered by increasing backing from corporate heavyweights.
  • This year, Bitcoin rose around 72 per cent after tech billionaire Elon Musk's electric vehicle company Tesla invested $1.5 billion in it.

Finance Ministry Releases Entire Estimated FY'21 GST Shortfall to States

  • The finance ministry released the full Rs. 1.10 lakh crore estimated GST compensation shortfall to the states with the release of final weekly instalment of Rs. 4,104 crore.
  • With the release of the 20th instalment, 100 per cent of the total estimated GST compensation shortfall of Rs. 1.10 lakh crore for the year 2020-21 has now been released to the states and UTs with Legislative Assembly. Out of this, an amount of Rs. 1,01,329 crore has been released to the states and an amount of Rs. 8,879 crore has been released to the three UTs with Legislative Assembly.

Second Atmosphere Forming on Earth-like Exoplanet

  • A first outside our solar system, an exoplanet named GJ 1132 b has gained a second atmosphere through volcanic activity after losing its original atmosphere.
  • The Earth-sized rocky exoplanet located 41 light-years away from our Earth orbits a dwarf star and was believed to have hydrogen and helium gases in its atmosphere before losing it to the intense radiation of the young hot star it orbits.
  • The evidence of a new atmosphere was found using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Hubble telescope.
  • Astronomers were surprised by the new findings as the new atmosphere contains a toxic mix of hydrogen, methane, and hydrogen cyanide. In addition, it also contains an aerosol haze similar to Earth which is a result of photochemically produced hydrocarbons.

Manika Batra Crashes Out of Olympic Qualifying Event

  • Manika Batra's run at the World Singles Qualification Tournament, an Olympic qualification event in table tennis, came to an end after she suffered a 4-1 defeat to Monaco's Xiaoxin Yang in the women's singles knockout stage-I semi-final match in Doha.
  • Achanta Sharath Kamal and Gnanasekaran Sathiyan also exited after suffering losses in their respective men's singles second round matches.
  • The Indian paddlers will now shift their focus to the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament, which is scheduled from March 18-20 in Doha.

Punjab Second among all States in Contributing to Army's Rank and File

  • Piping its neighbours, Punjab, often referred to as the sword army of the nation, has the second highest number of soldiers, other than officers, serving in the Army amongst all states and union territories in the country.
  • The strength of army personnel from Punjab is 89,088, according to information placed by the Ministry of Defence in Parliament. This accounts for 7.7 per cent of the Army's rank and file, even though its share of the national population is 2.3 per cent.
  • With 1,67,557 soldiers, Uttar Pradesh tops the list of states contributing manpower to the Army. While Uttar Pradesh, the nation's most populous state, makes up 16.5 per cent of the country's population, its share in the rank and file is 14.5 per cent. Maharashtra, with 87,835 soldiers occupies the third slot followed by Rajasthan, with 79,481 soldiers.

IPU President on a Week-long Visit to India

  • Inter Parliamentary Union President Mr. Duarte Pacheco called on Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and witnessed the proceedings of the Upper House.
  • Mr. Pacheco is on a week-long visit to India on the invitation of Indian Parliament. He is scheduled to attend a felicitation ceremony and address the Parliament Members under the auspices of the Indian Parliamentary Group (IPG) in Central Hall of Parliament House.
  • Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) formed in 1889, is one of the oldest and largest international Parliamentary body consisting of more than 179 Members. IPU espouses for the cause of promoting democracy across the world and take up issues of international importance, such as, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Climate Change, Gender Equality, etc.

Ayush Export Promotion Council to be Set up

  • The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, informed the Parliament that AYUSH ministry is holding consultations with the stakeholder to explore the setting up of an AYUSH Export Promotion Council (EPC). The government is also exploring the procedural steps which would be involved in setting up the council.
  • The "Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI)" has been tasked to coordinate with the Department of Commerce and the Indian Industry members who have shown their interest in forming the corpus for AYUSH export promotion council. Ministry of AYUSH has also set up a task force to expand the trade classification, quality control and standardization of Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM) & Herbal Products. The recommendations provided by the task force are under examination by the government current.

India's Import of Arms Decreases

  • According to a report released by Stockholm-based defence think-tank SIPRI, India's import of arms decreased by 33 per cent between 2011–15 and 2016–20 and Russia was the most affected supplier.
  • It said the drop in Indian arms imports seemed to have been the result of the country's complex procurement processes combined with an attempt to reduce its dependence on Russian arms.
  • In the last few years, India has taken a series of measures to boost domestic defence industry with an aim to reduce dependence on imported military platforms and hardware.

  • The former principal of the Goa College of Art had several laurels under his name including Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, Nehru Award, and Lalit Kala Akademi Award.

National Vaccination Day

  • The National Vaccination Day, also called the National Immunization Day, is celebrated every year on March 16 to convey the importance of vaccination to the entire nation. The day was first observed in the year 1995, the year in which India started Pulse Polio Programme. This year, the National Vaccination Day is important as the country has started its biggest Covid-19 immunization programme early this year and has already crossed the 30 million mark.
  • The National Vaccination day started with the aim of curbing Polio plaguing the world. The day was observed to better awareness about the disease and how it can be eradicated from the planet. About 172 million children are immunized during each National Immunization Day.

Bill in Lok Sabha to Give Delhi L-G more Power

    • The Union government introduced a bill in Parliament that seeks to give overarching powers over Delhi's daily functions to the Centre-appointed Lieutenant Governor (L-G). The bill has prompted protests from the Delhi government and revived the power tussle for control of the Capital.
    • Union minister of state for home G Kishan Reddy introduced the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2021, in the Lower House, where the government has a comfortable majority.
    • The bill says the "government" in Delhi will mean the L-G in the context of all legislation passed by the city-state's assembly.
    • It makes it mandatory for the city government to seek the L-G's opinion before any executive action.

Rajya Sabha Passes Bill to Declare 2 Food Tech Institutes as National Ones

  • The Rajya Sabha approved a Bill that declares two food technology institutes at Kundli in Haryana and Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu as National Institutes of Food Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management.
  • The Bill makes the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management, Kundli, and the Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology, Thanjavur, national institutes.
  • This Bill was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in February 2019. Thereafter, it was referred to the Standing Committee. There were certain amendments there that were approved by the Cabinet.

Free Education for Classes 9 to 12 in Haryana

  • During the presentation of the budget after a Covid-hit financial year, the government of Haryana has announced the plans of imparting free education for students of classes 9 to 12 in the state, to motivate more students to graduate from school.
  • For the fiscal year of 2021-22, the budget announced by the Haryana government mainly focussed on health, agriculture, and infrastructure to recover from the losses incurred due to the Covid-19 pandemic last year.
  • While announcing the budget for the next year, the government of Haryana also introduced a new initiative in the education system of the state called the 'KG to PG' programme, which will help students pursue higher education with ease.

IIT Mandi Researchers Develop Method for Efficient Removal of Heavy Metals from Water

  • A research team at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi, led by Dr. Sumit Sinha Ray, Assistant Professor, School of Engineering, has developed a fibrous membrane filter using a biopolymer-based material to remove heavy metals from water.
  • The results of this research have recently been published in the prestigious Elsevier journal, Polymer. The paper has been co-authored by Dr. Sinha Ray and his research scholar, Ashish Kakoria, along with Dr. Suman Sinha Ray, Adjunct Assistant Professor, University of Illinois at Chicago.
  • Acid mine drainage containing large quantity of heavy metals is a menace. Heavy metals in water could lead to several neurological problems in human including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis, and it is important to develop filters to treat effluents that are released into water bodies to prevent pollution.

France to Return Klimt Painting Sold under Duress

  • France is to return a painting by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt to the heirs of the Jewish family that was forced to sell it by the Nazis.
  • French Culture Minister Roselyne Bachelot said that restoring it to its rightful owners was an acknowledgement of the crimes they suffered.
  • The painting bore witness to the "broken lives" of the Nazi era.
  • The French state bought the work, its only Klimt, in 1980 without realising its history.
  • The pre-war owner of Rosiers sous les Arbres (Rose Bushes Under the Trees) was Nora Stiasny, from a well-known Austrian Jewish family. She had inherited it from her uncle, the Austrian industrialist and art collector Viktor Zuckerkandl, Ms Bachelot told a news conference at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
