China Approves 'Patriotic' Plan to Control Elections

  • China's legislature has approved a resolution to overhaul Hong Kong's electoral system - its latest move to tighten control over the city.
  • The "patriots governing Hong Kong" resolution was passed at the National People's Congress (NPC).
  • It will reduce democratic representation and allow a pro-Beijing panel to vet and elect candidates.
  • The former British colony was handed back to China in 1997 under a model called "one country, two systems".
  • Under the deal, which gave the territory freedoms not available in mainland China, Hong Kong also had its own mini-constitution and an elected parliament.
  • The latest Chinese move follows a series of measures that have tightened Beijing's grip on Hong Kong, including the passing of a national security law and a crackdown on activists and opposition politicians.
  • Detailed legislation will now be drafted and could be enacted in Hong Kong within the next few months.

China Approves Plan to Build Dam on Brahmaputra in Tibet Region

  • China's Parliament adopted the 14th Five-Year Plan, the mega blueprint containing billions of dollars worth of projects, including the controversial hydropower project on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet close to the Arunachal Pradesh border over which India has raised concerns.
  • The National People's Congress (NPC), China's legislature with over 2,000 members mostly drawn from the ruling Communist Party, adopted the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) for national economic and social development and the long-range objectives through the year 2035, on the last day of its six-day.

Japan-Australia Start Production of Hydrogen from Brown Coal

  • A Japanese-Australian venture has started producing hydrogen from brown coal. Japan and Australia have collaborated for a $500 million pilot project which aims to show that liquefied hydrogen can be produced commercially and can be safely exported overseas.
  • The countries have planned to create the first international supply chain for the liquefied hydrogen. In the next they also planned for shipping a cargo on the first liquefied hydrogen carrier of the world. The project will produce the hydrogen by reacting coal with oxygen and steam under high heat and pressure with carbon dioxide & other gases as the by-products.
  • The project is located in the Brown Coal Reserves in the state of Victoria and is run by Kawasaki Heavy industries. This project is significant because it will help Japan to meet its "net zero emission" target by 2050. Japan, which is the fifth largest energy consumer of the world, has aimed to boost the annual hydrogen demand by ten times amounting to 20 million tonnes by 2050. It is equal to 40 percent of the current power generation in the country.

Trader Body CAIT Launches Vendor Onboarding App ahead of E-Commerce Portal

  • Traders' body CAIT launched a vendor onboarding mobile app for its upcoming e-commerce portal 'Bharat e Market'. The app will enable businesses and service providers to register on the portal and create their own "e-dukaan".
  • The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said its 'purely Indian' Bharat e Market portal will comply with all the rules and regulations of the country.
  • CAIT has been engaged in a tirade against foreign e-commerce companies, accusing them of violating the country's FDI policy norms -- a charge denied by the firms.
  • The traders' body aims to onboard 7 lakh traders on the portal by December this year and 1 crore traders by December 2023.

Aquaconnect Partners with Bank of Baroda for Loans to Fish Farmers

  • Aquaculture technology venture Aquaconnect partnered with state-owned Bank of Baroda to provide loan access to 1.6 million aquaculture farmers.
  • Bank of Baroda in partnership with Aquaconnect will provide credit access under the Kisan Credit Card scheme at an annualised rate of as low as 10 per cent, according to a statement.
  • The fish and shrimp farmers can also avail the advisory services and quality farm inputs from Aquaconnect platform.
  • Under this partnership, Bank of Baroda has extended loan for up to Rs. 10 lakh under KCC scheme and fisheries loan.
  • Higher credit limits can also be availed under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) schemes on case-to-case basis.
  • The company aims to target Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Odisha and later extend it to other states across the country.

Govt. Okays 33 API Applications under PLI Scheme

  • The government has approved a total of 33 applications with a committed investment of Rs. 5,082.65 crore under the production linked incentive scheme for active pharmaceutical ingredients.
  • Setting up of these plants will make the country self-reliant to a large extent in respect of these bulk drugs.
  • The Department of Pharmaceuticals has launched a PLI scheme for the promotion of domestic manufacturing by setting up greenfield plants in four different target segments with a total outlay of R. 6,940 crore for the period 2020-21 to 2029-30.

ISRO's NISAR to be First Satellite to Enable Earth Observation in 2 Frequencies

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) sent its s-band synthetic aperture radar to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory for integration with their l-band radar last week. Coupled together, the Nasa-Isro Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) will become the first satellite to enable earth observation in two frequencies.
  • After integration, the payload will be sent back to India for launch from the country's only spaceport at Sriharikota sometime in April or May next year.
  • According to NASA, the satellite will provide an "unprecedented view of the Earth" at less than one centimetre across.

Goa to Host 2021 AFC Champions League Group E Matches

  • Group E matches of the AFC Champions League (ACL) will be hosted in Goa, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Group E includes FC Goa, who became the first Indian club to directly qualify for the group stage of Asia's premier club competition by virtue of finishing at the top of the table in the Indian Super League (ISL).
  • Goa will be competing against Iranian club Persepolis, who finished runners-up in 2018, and Qatar's Al Rayyan SC along with a qualifier from the playoff matches. The matches will be held from April 14 to 30. However, specific stadiums for the matches are yet to be announced.
  • The West Region matches, which are scheduled to take place between April 14-30, will see Saudi Arabia host Groups A and D in Riyadh as well as Group C in Jeddah, with the matches in Group B to be staged in the United Arab Emirates city of Sharjah, while India, whose representative FC Goa are poised to mark the nation's debut in Asia's premier club competition, will host Group E.

Vietnam Agrees to Work Closely on Key Issues with India

  • India and Vietnam held bilateral consultations on United Nations Security Council issues using the VTC platform where both sides agreed to work closely together on key issues on the UNSC agenda.
  • According to a release by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Vietnamese delegation was led by Do Hung Viet, Director-General, Department of International Organizations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam along with officials from the Department of International Organisations, Department of Southeast Asia, South Pacific of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Embassy of Vietnam at New Delhi and the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the UN.
  • Prakash Gupta, Joint Secretary (UNP & Summits) led the Indian delegation and was joined by officials from the Southern Division of MEA, the Permanent Mission of India to the UN in New York and the Embassy of India in Hanoi.

UP BJP Announces State Working Committee

  • The Uttar Pradesh BJP announced the names of 323 members of its state working committee, and also listed permanent and special invitees to the panel.
  • Twenty-eight senior party leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, UP Chief Minister Adityanath and several state and central ministers, have been included as permanent invitees.
  • All the party's district presidents, district in-charges and mayors will be invitee members of the state working committee.
  • A total of 94 leaders, including MPs and cabinet ministers like Suresh Kumar Khanna, Swami Prasad Maurya, Satish Mahana, Ashutosh Tandon and Anil Rajbhar, have been made special invitees.

IAF set to Raise Second Squadron of Rafale Jets in Hasimara

  • The Indian Air Force is set to raise a second squadron of the Rafale combat aircraft in mid-April and it will be based in Hasimara air base in West Bengal.
  • The first squadron of the Rafale jets is stationed at Ambala Air Force station. The first batch of five Rafale jets arrived in India on July 29 last, nearly four years after India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France to procure 36 of the aircraft at a cost of Rs. 59,000 crore.
  • The formal induction ceremony of the fleet had taken place at Ambala in September 2020.

  • Footwear brand Bata India Limited announced actor Kartik Aaryan as the company's new brand ambassador. Carrying forward Bata's fashion-forward narrative, Kartik will be seen promoting popular brands under the Bata umbrella.
  • The association will begin with the launch of a new campaign by Bata. The actor will be seen in a series of advertisements across television, digital and other mediums.
  • Bata India is a footwear retailer with a presence of more than 85 years. It sets more than 47 million pairs of footwear every year and serves 120,000-plus customers almost every day.

PM Modi Inaugurates Global Ayurveda Festival

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fourth edition of the Global Ayurveda Festival through video conference.
  • This festival will be held virtually between March 12 and March 19.
  • Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Union Minister V Muraleedharan, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) President Uday Shankar and former FICCI President Dr Sangita Reddy were also be present at the event.
  • Muraleedharan is the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the festival.
  • The festival will also include international seminars, a global exhibition and business meet. The festival will hold an all-time record in the number of delegates, the number of scientists presenting papers and the number of participating countries and institutions.

First Meeting of BRICS Contact Group on Economic and Trade Issues

  • The BRICS Contact Group on Economic and Trade Issues (CGETI) held their first meeting under the Chair ship of India. The meeting was held from March 9 to March 11, 2021. The meeting was held under the Theme –"BRICS @15: Intra BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation, and Consensus".
  • India under its Chair ship for 2021, presented a calendar of events for BRICS CGETI 2021. Those events comprise of priority areas for deliverables, schedule and scope of MSME roundtable conference workshop on Services Statistics and BRICS Trade Fair. It was followed by several presentations made by the concerned department on proposed deliverables during the India's Chair ship under BRICS CGETI track.

IIT-Delhi, Hebrew University of Jerusalem Partner to Support for Interdisciplinary Research

  • Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi announced its partnership with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel (HUJI) to support collaborative and interdisciplinary education and research initiatives. Student exchange is another key partnership priority, which will help students get benefitted from the academic and entrepreneurial environments of the two institutions.
  • IIT Delhi lays great emphasis on international collaborations. Both the institutions have agreed to seed fund researchers in their respective institutions to collaborate with each other. These interactions will lead to long term partnerships between the two institutions benefiting the two countries.

Anna University Pulled up for Giving Reservation to EWS

  • The Anna University was pulled up by the Madras High Court for allegedly providing 10 per cent reservation, within the 49.5 per cent reservation, to candidates belonging to economically weaker sections (EWS) in admission to M Tech Biotechnology and M Tech Computational Technology courses.
  • "The (earlier) orders passed by this court should be carried out in full and any deviation will attract the consequences. The newly introduced reservation clause has created unnecessary confusion," Justice B Pugalendhi said.
  • The judge made the observation when pleas from two aspiring candidates came up.
  • The university had suspended the two courses, following the insistence of the Centre that it should adhere to its 49.5 per cent reservation alone and not the 69 per cent quota policy of the Tamil Nadu government in the admission of students to these two courses.
  • The judge in February had directed the University to admit students to the two courses following the Central government's 49.5 per cent reservation for the current academic year.
