Ghana Opposition Leader Disagrees with Poll Ruling

  • Ghana's opposition leader and former President John Mahama has said he disagrees with the process and ruling of the Supreme Court on his petition challenging the results of the last years' presidential election.
  • But he said he is legally bound by the decision of the court.
  • The Supreme Court upheld Nana Akufo-Addo's victory, dismissing allegations of irregularities.
  • Reacting to the court's verdict, Mr Mahama expressed disappointment that the head of the electoral commission, Jean Mensa, did not testify on alleged irregularities.
  • The Supreme Court ruled that the opposition leader had failed to prove that none of the candidates had won more 50% as is required to win the presidential election in the first round.

Beijing to Overhaul Hong Kong Electoral System

  • China's top law-making body has unveiled plans to ensure only patriots can govern Hong Kong, as Beijing tightens its grip on the city with changes to the electoral system.
  • Premier Li Keqiang, addressing the National People's Congress (NPC), warned the world not to interfere.
  • The move follows the imposition of a tough security law.
  • Critics say Beijing is crushing dissent and removing the 'one country, two systems' agreement it made with the UK.
  • Under the agreement, Hong Kong, a former British colony, was allowed to continue with its own legal system and have rights including free speech and freedom of the press.

IndiGrid to Buy NER II Transmission from Sterlite Power

  • Investment trust IndiGrid inked an agreement to acquire 100 per cent equity stake in NER II Transmission from Sterlite Power for about Rs. 4,625 crore.
  • The completion of acquisition would depend upon receipt of unit holders' consent, regulatory and other relevant approvals.
  • India Grid Trust (IndiGrid) signed share purchase agreement on March 5, 2021 for acquisition of 100 per cent shareholding and economic interest, in one or more tranches, in NER II Transmission Ltd from Sterlite Grid 4 Ltd.
  • Sterlite Grid is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sterlite Power Transmission Ltd, one of the sponsors of IndiGrid.

Indian Bank to Monetise Non-core Assets, Divest Stake in ASREC (India)

  • Public sector lender Indian Bank is planning to divest its stake in ASREC (India) Ltd, an asset reconstruction company. The bank said that this is part of its plan to monetise its non-core assets.
  • The Board of Directors of the bank gave in-principal approval for partial/full disinvestment of the lender's stake in its joint venture ASREC (India) Ltd. Indian Bank holds 38.26 per cent stake in ASREC (India).
  • ASERC acquires non-performing assets (NPAs) from banks and financial institutions at mutually agreed prices with the objective of maximising returns through innovative resolution strategies.

India and other Countries Face US Anti-Dumping Tax

  • The United States Department of Commerce is all set to tax aluminium sheet exporters from the 18 countries including India after the department determined that these countries had benefited from subsidies and dumping.
  • This decision was taken by the US Department of Commerce after several U.S. aluminium alloy manufacturers complained that they were being harmed because of imports at the lower prices. A U.S. investigation on India states that, in the year 2019, imports from India have benefited from subsidies for 35 per cent to 89 per cent.

Researchers Find Organic Matter and Water in Sample from Asteroid Itokawa

  • An international team of scientists has studied both the water and organic contents from a dust particle recovered from the surface of the near-Earth S-type asteroid 25143 Itokawa by JAXA's Hayabusa mission, which was the first mission that brought pristine asteroidal materials to Earth.
  • In 2010, the Hayabusa mission successfully recovered over thousands of regolith particles, with sizes ranging 10-200 μm, from the near-Earth asteroid Itokawa.
  • Itokawa is considered a rubble-pile asteroid that was re-accreted from materials of a formerly large, thermally metamorphosed, collisional-disrupted precursor planetesimal.

  • World bronze-medallist Simranjit Kaur (60 kg) advanced to the final but seasoned MC Mary Kom (51 kg) had to be content with a bronze medal after going down in a gruelling semifinal bout at the 35th Boxam International Boxing Tournament in Castellon, Spain.
  • Joining Simranjit in the last-four stage was debutant Jasmine (57 kg) after she defeated Italian Sirine Charaabi. Simranjit got the better of Puerto Rico's Kiria Tapia.

India and Nigeria Resolve to Step up Cooperation in Combating Terrorism

  • India and Nigeria vowed to enhance cooperation against all forms of terrorism, reaffirming their firm belief that there can be no justification for the menace.
  • At the invitation of National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, his Nigerian counterpart Major General (retd.) Babagana Monguno visited New Delhi for the first Strategic and Counter-Terrorism Dialogue between India and Nigeria at the level of NSA from March 4 to 5.
  • Within the framework of the close and strategic partnership between India and Nigeria, the national security advisors held in-depth discussions on the threats and challenges faced by democratic societies from terrorism, extremism, radicalisation including through cyberspace, as well as from international crime, arms and drug smuggling and piracy.

PM Narendra Modi Addresses Top Military Leadership Conference

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a conference of the county's top military leadership in Gujarat's Kevadia which also saw the participation of jawans and junior commissioned officers (JCOs) for the first time.
  • NSA Ajit Doval, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat, Army Chief General M.M. Naravane, Air Chief Marshal R.K.S. Bhadauria, Navy Chief Admiral Karambir Singh and senior officials of the Defence Ministry and the armed forces were present at the conference.
  • The agenda of the meet was to review the working of the Department of Military Affairs (DMA), from the unification of the three armies and the creation of theatre command.
  • The annual Combined Commanders Conference was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. In 2014, the CCC meet had taken place for the first time, it was only then that the three forces suggested the conference to be moved out of Delhi.

Kotak Mahindra Bank Appoints Ashok Gulati as Additional Director

  • Private sector lender Kotak Mahindra Bank appointed agricultural economist Ashok Gulati as additional independent director on its board. The term of Gulati, a keen backer of the recent farm laws who has also been appointed by the Supreme Court to a four-member panel, is for five years starting from Saturday.
  • Gulati is an MA and PhD from Delhi School of Economics and is currently the Infosys Chair Professor for Agriculture at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).
  • Previously, he has served as the Chairman of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP), Government of India (2011-2014), and member of the RBI's Central Board of Directors and at the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD).

Naureen Hassan First VP, COO of Federal Reserve Bank of New York

  • An Indian-origin veteran of the financial services industry has been appointed as the first vice-president and chief operating officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
  • Naureen Hassan has been appointed by the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York as the first vice president and chief operating officer, effective from March 15. The appointment was approved by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
  • As the first vice president, Hassan will be the New York Fed's second ranking officer as well as an alternate voting member of the Federal Open Market Committee.
  • She was, most recently, the Chief Digital Officer for Morgan Stanley Wealth Management (MSWM).

Mohankrishna Bohara Wins Bihari Puraskar

  • Mohankrishna Bohara will be awarded the 30th Bihari Puraskar Award for his critical work 'Taslima: Sangharsh aur Sahitya.
  • The Bihari Puraskar is one of the three literary awards instituted by the KK Birla Foundation in 1991. Named after the famous poet Bihari, the award carries a cash prize of Rs. 2.5 lakh, a plaque and a citation.
  • The award is given every year for an outstanding work published in the last 10 years by a Rajasthani author in Hindi or Rajasthani. The recipient is chosen by a selection committee, whose present chairman is Om Thanvi. After considering the works published during 2010-2019, 'Taslima: Sangharsh aur Sahitya' by Bohra was selected for the Bihari Puraskar, 2020.

IIT-Kanpur Launches Online Certificate Programme in Blockchain Technology

  • The Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) in partnership with the online learning platform Simplilearn announced a professional certificate programme in blockchain technology. The professionals working as software developers, IT professionals, engineers, analysts, technical leads can pursue this course as it covers the most in-demand skills in the blockchain. The certificate programme is for four months.
  • The course covered key domains of applications of blockchain technology, bitcoin, platforms that use Blockchain, application building on ethereum, hyper ledger, and other prospects. The programme will be distributed into over 70 hours of applied learning and 50 hours of self-paced learning.

IIM Nagpur Achieves 100% Placement for MBA Batch of 2019-21

  • IIM Nagpur has completed the Final Placements process for the fifth batch of its flagship Master's

World's First Space Hotel Expected to Open in 2027

  • Space construction company Orbital Assembly Corporation unveiled new details about its ambitious project of building a hotel above Earth's atmosphere. Gateway Foundation first came up with the concept in 2012 and the Californian company later established OAC to realise its dream of building the first commercial hotel in space. The company is planning to start building the hotel, Voyager Station, in the low Earth orbit in 2025 that could be operational as early as 2027.
  • The space hotel will be different from the International Space Station (ISS) since the giant wheel with 24 modules, connected by elevator shafts, will rotate to generate artificial gravity of a level found on the Moon's surface. It will also have 44 emergency return vehicles (ERVs) with automated flight controls for autonomous landing, according to the construction company.

Madhya Pradesh Introduces the Night Safaris

  • The state of Madhya Pradesh has introduced the night safaris in the three national parks in Madhya Pradesh. This move by the state is a major boost for the state which is already known for its robust tourism industry.
  • With the introduction of night safaris in three national parks, wildlife enthusiasts can now experience the majestic animals at night. The three parks include the Bandhavgarh National Park, Kanha National Park and Pench National Park.
  • Usually, safaris are conducted during the day because tourists feel safer in the daylight. But because of day safaris, tourists miss out to witness nocturnal animals in their natural habitat. So, now the state hopes to organise the safaris in a controlled manner. Under the safaris, the routes will be decided by the state. They would ensure that, neither the animals nor the tourists get vulnerable to harm. The night safari can be booked on the Wildlife Safari Reservation portal. This portal is operated by forest department of the state.
