Kamala Harris Formally Submits Her Senate Resignation

  • Vice President-elect Kamala Harris officially resigned from her Senate seat ending her four-year innings in the upper chamber of the United States Congress. The move comes two days before the 56-year-old would be sworn in along with President-elect Joe Biden, making history as the first female, first Black and first South Asian American vice president.
  • Harris, a Democrat, has formally submitted her letter of resignation to California Governor Gavin Newsom.
  • Harris won her seat in November 2016 and was sworn in January 2017. At the time, Harris was California's attorney general. 

Pakistan Names General Envoy to Saudi Arabia as Military Seeks Control of Ties

  • Lt Gen Bilal Akbar has been named Pakistan's new envoy to Saudi Arabia, with the move signalling the military establishment's desire to take control of bilateral ties that have witnessed turbulence in recent months.
  • Akbar will replace ambassador Raja Ali Ejaz, who is retiring in May. Ejaz, a career diplomat, has been Pakistan's ambassador in Riyadh since January 2019.
  • Akbar's appointment on the "recommendation of the General Headquarters indicates the military's desire to take control of the bilateral ties that have lately been hit by turbulence to prevent them from further deterioration.

Donald Trump Becomes 4th President to Boycott Inauguration Ceremony of Successor

  • Refusing to abide by tradition and participate in the ceremonial transfer of power, Trump will instead hold his own departure ceremony at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland before his final flight aboard Air Force One.
  • Trump became only the fourth President in history to boycott his successor's inauguration. 
  • He did not invite the Biden's to the White House for the traditional bread-breaking, nor had he spoken with Biden by phone. Vice President Mike Pence had spoken with his successor, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, calling her to congratulate her and offer assistance. Pence attended Biden's inauguration, a move Biden welcomed.

YES BANK Launches YES MSME Initiative

  • YES BANK has rolled out YES MSME, a proposition with the aim to strengthen the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with speedy and easy access to funds. This will be facilitated by curated offerings to address both business and individual needs of MSMEs and of new-age entrepreneurs. The YES MSME proposition has been curated, taking into consideration the insights and feedback from customers and industry associations.
  • The proposition focuses on supporting MSMEs in expanding their business, sustaining momentum, and accelerating growth through solutions across lending, deposits, insurance, customized and segmented digital solutions for retail, manufacturing, wholesale, trade and service providers. This also includes special current account offerings for the self-employed segment.
  • The launch comes during the SME carnival from January 18 – 22, 2021 at the Bank's MSME-focused branches across India. 

Bajaj Finance to Enter Payment Solutions Market with 'Bajaj Pay'

  • Bajaj Finance is going to launch 'Bajaj Pay', an integrated payment platform comprising UPI, PPI, EMI card and credit card options as it plans to enter the payment solutions market in the fourth quarter of FY21.
  • The company, in a regulatory filing, confirmed that its targeted time for Bajaj Pay launch is Q4 of FY21. The move will allow Bajaj Finance to make forays into the fast-growing payment solutions market in India.
  • Bajaj Finance would also be launching another app — 'Bajaj Pay for Merchants', which will cater to the requirements of a customer base of over 100,000 merchants.
  • This will broaden payment solution offering for our -103,000 merchants and enable disproportionate growth in our market share from these merchants in the medium term.
  • Bajaj Finance is also developing five proprietary marketplaces, 'EMI Store, 'Insurance Marketplace', 'Investment Marketplace, 'BF Health', and broking app with the help of group companies.

Ola, Siemens to Build 'India's most Advanced EV Manufacturing Hub' in TN

  • Ola, one of the leading mobility companies in the world, partnered with Siemens as it looks to rapidly build its upcoming electric vehicle manufacturing facility. This announcement comes on the heels of Ola's MoU with the government of Tamil Nadu to invest nearly Rs. 2,400 crore towards building this facility.
  • The factory will generate almost 10,000 jobs and with an initial capacity of 2 million units a year, it will be the largest scooter manufacturing facility in the world. It will serve as Ola's global manufacturing hub catering to its customers in India as well as key markets across Europe, UK, Latin America and Australia-New Zealand.

EU orders next-generation Galileo satellites

  • The European Commission has handed down industrial contracts worth a total of €1.47bn (£1.31bn; $1.97bn) to build the next generation of Galileo satellites.
  • The work is going to the continent's two dominant space manufacturers — Airbus and Thales Alenia Space.
  • They will make six spacecraft each for the global navigation satellite system, with the first of them likely to go into orbit in 2024.
  • Galileo is the EU's version of the US Global Positioning System (GPS).
  • Now enabled in billions of smartphones worldwide, both services allow users to identify their location on the planet down to an error of a metre or so.
  • The precise timing transmissions from orbit are also used in numerous infrastructure applications, including the synchronisation of telecommunications and energy networks.

JSW Sports Signs Rishabh Pant, to Manage Commercial Interests, Marketing Rights

  • Star India wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has entered into a multi-year contract with JSW Sports, which will look after the cricketer's commercial and marketing rights. JSW Sports, the sports arm of the USD 13 billion JSW Group conglomerate, announced Pant's addition to its growing list of talents.
  • Pant was earlier managed by Cornerstone Sport and Entertainment Pvt Ltd. The multi-year association will see JSW Sports manage all commercial interests and marketing rights of the 23-year-old cricketer.
  • As part of the association, JSW Sports will manage his image positioning and all his commercial engagements, including brand endorsements and appearances, social media monetisation and business deals.

MoU Signed between India and Uzbekistan for Solar Energy Cooperation

  • The Union Cabinet approved the signing of Memorandum of Understanding between India and Uzbekistan for cooperation in solar energy.
  • As per reports, the main area of work is to identify research, demonstration and pilot projects between the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the International Solar Energy Institute (ISEI), Uzbekistan in mutually identified areas including solar photovoltaic and storage technologies.
  • Based on mutual agreement, both parties would work for implementation and deployment of a pilot project in International Solar Alliance (ISA) member countries.

Karnataka is the Most Innovative State, Says NITI Aayog

  • Karnataka retained its leadership position in the major States category in the second edition of India Innovation Index released by NITI Aayog.
  • It was followed by Maharashtra, which moved past Tamil Nadu to occupy the second place.
  • Other States in the top 10 are Telangana, Kerala, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Barring Maharashtra, all other States in the top five are in the south.
  • Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Bihar scored the lowest on the index, which put them at the bottom in the "major States" category.

Rafale Jets to Debut in Republic Day Fly Past

  • The Indian Air Force's Rafales, Sukhoi-30s and MiG-29s, fighters that are part of its muscular posture in the Ladakh theatre, are among the 42 aircraft that will take part in this year's Republic Day fly past, the highlight of India's biggest ceremonial parade.
  • The Rafales, whose induction into the IAF began last September and is work in progress, are taking part in the fly past for the first time. A woman fighter pilot will also participate in the parade for the first time.

India and Singapore to Scale up Military Ties

  • India and Singapore expressed a commitment to further elevate their engagement in the fields of defence technology, military and industry.
  • This was the outcome of the fifth India-Singapore Defence Ministers Dialogue. Rajnath Singh co-chaired it the along with Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Defence, Singapore. It was a virtual interaction.
  • During the dialogue, both ministers discussed new areas of potential cooperation and articulated their vision in that direction. The ministers witnessed the signing of the implementing agreement on submarine rescue support and cooperation signed between the navies of both countries.

Lt Gen Mohanty is Next Army Vice-Chief

  • Southern Army Commander Lt Gen CP Mohanty has been appointed next Vice-Chief of the Indian Army.
  • He will take over from Lt General SK Saini after he superannuates on January 31. Lt Gen Mohanty has commanded the crucial 33 Corps in the eastern sector after the Doklam standoff.

NDRF Raising Day

  • The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) Raising Day is celebrated on January 19 to mark its formation. This year, the NDRF observed its 16th NDRF Raising Day.
  • The NDRF came into existence on January 19, 2006. The specialised task force has been constituted for "special response to a threatening disaster situation or a disaster." National Disaster Management Authority is the parent body of the NDRF. Located at 12 different locations in the country, there are 12 NDRF battalions. There are as many as 13,000 NDRF personnel who work to build a safer country.
  • NDRF battalions have 18 self-contained specialist search and rescue teams. The director general of NDRF is an IPS officer. Currently, IPS officer SN Pradhan is the DG of the NDRF.

Quaide Milleth Awards

  • Bilkis dadi, the face of the Shaheen Bagh anti-CAA protests, and social activist and writer Harsh Mander of Karwan-e-Mohabbat were presented the Quaide Milleth Award for Probity in Political and Public Life at the India Islamic Cultural Centre, New Delhi.
  • The award consists of a shawl, citation and cash of Rs. 2.5 lakh and was presented to the recipients by Navaid Hamid, President, All India Majilis e Mushawarat.
  • N. Ram, Director, THG Publishing Pvt. Ltd., said that both recipients had made a mark in public life with their determination and zeal to protect the secular fabric of the country. He said the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is the face of the current oppressive regime. The selfless achievements of the awardees would be truly honoured only if a stance was taken in defence of the Constitution which has been under attack since the advent of this regime.

Sixteenth Century Copy of 'Salvator Mundi' Recovered

  • The Italian Police recovered a sixteenth century copy of 'Salvator Mundi'. Salvator Mundi is the world most expensive painting of Leonardo da Vinci.
  • Salvator Mundi is a painting by the Italian renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. The painting depicts Jesus in Renaissance dress making the sign of cross with his right hand. Also, he holds a transparent crystal orb in his left hand in the painting. The painting represents "Celestial Sphere" of the heavens. There are twenty other variations of the same work by the students of Leonardo da Vinci. However, the original painting was created by the legend himself.
  • The Salvator Mundi is one of the few of the twenty-known works of Leonardo.
  • Salvator Mundi is the most expensive painting in the world. The painting was sold at 450 million USD in 2017. It was sold to Saudi Prince Badr bin Abdullah. He is the current Minister of Culture of Saudi Arabia. Since then, the painting holds the place of the most expensive painting of the world till date.
