Cyprus Denies New Allegations in "Golden Passport" Scheme
Cyprus denied fresh allegations that it was granting citizenship to foreigners accused of crimes in exchange for millions in investments, insisting that all those who received a passport met all criteria in place at the time.
The Cypriot parliament last month beefed up the eligibility criteria for the so-called "golden passport" investment program, which has brought billions in revenue since its introduction following a 2013 financial crisis.
The program has attracted many investors because a passport from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus automatically grants its holder citizenship to the entire 27-member European Union.
Cyprus' interior ministry said that 12 foreigners named in an Al Jazeera report received citizenship under the investment program only after being approved by Cypriot and foreign agencies tasked with vetting such applications.
The report claimed that the 12 — including four Russians, two people each from Ukraine, China and Iran, and one each from Venezuela and Vietnam — secured Cypriot passports after paying at least 2 million euros (USD 2.36 million) in investments despite being under investigation for an assortment of crimes such as corruption and fraud.
The Cypriot interior ministry said that it would look into the new information in the report.
Top West Africa Delegation Goes to Mali to Meet with Junta
Top West African officials are arriving in Mali's capital following a coup in the nation this week to meet with the junta leaders and the deposed president in efforts to negotiate a return to civilian rule.
The mediation efforts came a day after thousands of Malians took to the streets of Bamako, the capital city, to celebrate the coup.
The West African regional bloc known as ECOWAS has strongly condemned the coup and said the high-level delegation will work "to ensure the immediate return of constitutional order".
ECOWAS also demanded the reinstatement of deposed president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita.
ECOWAS had said that it is mobilising a regional military force, an indication that it is preparing for a military intervention in case its negotiations with the junta leaders fail.
The high-level delegation is to hold talks with the junta, including Col. Assimi Goita, who has declared himself the group's leader.
Later the regional delegation will meet with Keita and the other detained officials.

A Republican strategist and veteran pollster, she was the first woman to manage a successful US presidential campaign, spearheading Mr. Trump's effort in 2016.

Govt. Frames Norms to Enforce 'Rules of Origin' for Imports under FTAs
The government has come out with norms for the enforcement of 'rules of origin' provisions for allowing preferential rate of customs duties on products imported under free trade agreements.
The new norms have been framed with a view to checking inbound shipments of low quality products and dumping of goods by a third country routed through an FTA partner country.
The Department of Revenue has notified the 'Customs (Administration of Rules of Origin under Trade Agreements) Rules, 2020' which would "come into force on September 21, 2020".
These rules "shall apply to import of goods into India where the importer makes a claim of preferential rate of duty in terms of a trade agreement.
The ''rules of origin'' provision prescribes for the minimal processing that should happen in the FTA country so that the final manufactured product may be called originating goods in that country.
Under this provision, a country that has inked an FTA with India cannot dump goods from some third country in the Indian market by just putting a label on it. It has to undertake a prescribed value addition in that product to export to India. Rules of origin norms help contain dumping of goods.
India has inked FTAs with several countries, including Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and ASEAN members.
Under such agreements, two trading partners significantly reduce or eliminate import/customs duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and Shiv Nadar University claim to have developed a technology for production of environment friendly Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) batteries which will be three times more energy efficient and cost effective than Lithium-ion batteries commonly used at present.
According to the team, the Li-S battery technology leverages principles of green chemistry, incorporating usage of by-products from the petroleum industry (Sulfur), agro-waste elements and copolymers such as cardanol (a by-product of cashew nut processing) and eugenol (clove oil) as cathodic materials.
The researchers said the technology has the potential to aid multi-billion dollar industries including tech gadgets, drones, electric vehicles (EV) and several more that depend on such batteries.
Lochab's team has partnered with Sagar Mitra, IIT Bombay's Professor in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, to use the research for the development of a Li-S battery prototype.

BJP, JD(U) and LJP to Jointly Fight Polls
Putting an end to speculation and drawing the line for NDA's warring Bihar partners LJP and JD(U), the BJP chief, J. P. Nadda, said that the party-led coalition would contest the Assembly elections as one force with CM Nitish Kumar as the face of the alliance.
Nadda's remarks, at a virtual meet of the Bihar BJP, come amid a war of words between the Janata Dal (U) and the Chirag Paswan-headed Lok Janshakti Party. Chirag has been targeting Nitish over his handling of the migrant crisis, Covid pandemic and floods. However, Nadda not only praised the Bihar Government's handling of the pandemic and floods, but also made it clear that the polls would be fought under Nitish.
It will be the first time that the three parties will be contesting together.

India Plans to Buy Radiation Detection Equipment to Enhance Internal Security
The government is looking to buy radiation detection equipment (RDE) to deter and detect illicit trafficking of radioactive materials across international borders. Border crossings, integrated check posts (ICPs) and land ports will be equipped with RDE to stop any smuggling of material needed for a nuclear device or radiological dispersal device.
The move will lead to a significant enhancement of India's internal security abilities as border checks have so far focused on detecting counterfeit currency, drugs, arms and ammunition, and explosives, said a senior government official, who did not wish to be identified. The government issued a request for interest (RFI) on August 21, a copy of which has been seen by ET, for seeking inputs on system requirements and technical information for procuring RDE. India has ICPs at Attari, Jogbani, Raxaul, Agartala, Petrapole and Moreh which see cross-border trade and movement of passengers.
The government has sought information from bidders on the experience from places the world over where RDE has been installed and is actually under use. The US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration, for example, has been helping many countries combat the smuggling of radioactive material at important international border crossing points with such equipment, including at the Friendship Bridge connecting Afghanistan to Uzbekistan.

The UK's travel industry has reached a "critical point" and is calling for further support to stem job losses.
According to the travel industry trade body ABTA, measures to curb the pandemic have already led to the loss of around 39,000 jobs.
About 65% of travel firms have had to make redundancies or start a consultation process.
As per ABTA, the industry desperately needs "tailored support" or many more jobs would be lost.
The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) warned that more job losses were set to come as the government's furlough scheme is phased out, unless new support measures are introduced.
