Turkey Approves Social Media law with New Powers

  • Turkey's parliament approved a law that gives authorities greater power to regulate social media despite concerns of growing censorship.
  • The law requires major social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter to keep representative offices in Turkey to deal with complaints against content on their platforms. If the social media company refuses to designate an official representative, the legislation mandates steep fines, advertising bans and bandwidth reductions.

UK Names New MI6 Spy Chief to Tackle Challenges from China and Russia

  • Britain named career diplomat and intelligence officer Richard Moore as the new chief of the MI6 spy service as the West seeks to bolster its defences against hostile espionage from China and Russia. Moore joined the Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) in 1987, just four years before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
  • An accomplished intelligence officer, Moore served in various diplomatic and security roles before winning one of the most powerful jobs in Western intelligence. Alex Younger, the current chief of MI6 - or plain "C" - will step down in the autumn.
  • Moore served as British ambassador to Turkey from January 2014 to December 2017 and has also served as deputy national security adviser.

Sembcorp Commissions 3 Wind Projects of 800 MW

  • Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) R. K. Singh inaugurated Sembcorp's state-of-the-art three wind power projects with a total capacity of 800 MW. Sembcorp Energy India Limited (SEIL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, announced the completion of its latest 800 MW wind power projects, bringing its renewable energy capacity in India to 1,730 MW. With the full commissioning of its three 300 MW wind projects, Sembcorp has become the first independent power producer to fully commission its projects awarded in the first three wind auctions held by Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). Together, these assets provide enough clean energy to power more than 6,00,000 homes and avoid over two million tonnes/annum of carbon dioxide emissions. This capacity is also the largest operational wind capacity with any developer to-date from SECI auctions.
  • Singh congratulated SEIL and the Singapore government for their work and commitment to the renewable energy sector. He said that we are determined to achieve energy transition for which we will ensure transparency, fairness and level playing field to our partners in the sector. He further added that we are committed to achieving the target of 175 GW Renewable Energy capacity by 2020 and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 450 GW Renewable Energy capacity by 2030.

PFC Ties Up with IIT-Kanpur for Research and Training in Smart Grid Technology

  • State-owned Power Finance Corporation (PFC) signed an agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology- Kanpur for training, research, and entrepreneurship development in smart grid technology.
  • As per the memorandum of association, the PFC will provide financial assistance of ₹2.38 crore to IIT-K under its CSR initiative.
  • The objective of the pact is to provide support to IIT-K in developing infrastructure for research and development on smart grid technology, R Murahari, Executive Director (CSR&SD), PFC, said.
  • As part of the project, the IIT-K will also provide training on smart grid technology to 90 participants and provide fellowship to nine selected candidates for development of ideas on smart grid technology.
  • The fellows will be assisted by startup Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC) of IIT-K and encouraged to take up entrepreneurial activities.

Gujarat and UK India Business Council Sign MoU to Improve Industrial Development

  • The UK India Business Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Industrial Extension Bureau (iNDEXTb), Industries and Mines Department, Government of Gujarat, the premier agency focused on accelerating industrial development in the state.
  • This collaborative partnership between the UKIBC and the Government of Gujarat will help to boost business and industrial development in the state. It will also aim to proactively enhance the business environment and strengthen collaboration with British businesses in Gujarat.
  • The MoU was signed at a virtual roundtable by Neelam Rani, Managing Director, Industrial Extension Bureau (iNDEXTb), Government of Gujarat and Kevin McCole, Managing Director, UKIBC in the presence of Peter Cook, Deputy High Commissioner, British Deputy High Commission - Ahmedabad, M. K. Das, Principal Secretary (Industries and Mines Department), Government of Gujarat and Arti Kanwar, Resident Commissioner & Commissioner (Investment Promotion), Government of Gujarat.

Serena, Rafael and Novak in 2020 Western & Southern Open Players List

  • The 2020 Western & Southern Open that is scheduled from August 20-28, 2020, has included star tennis players like Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in its player list.
  • The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York will also witness Grigor Dimitrov and Marin Cilic. The one-time staging of the tournament in New York instead of Cincinnati is in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The initial entries include both defending champions - Daniil Medvedev for the ATP Tour and Madison Keys for the WTA.
  • Main draw play for the Western & Southern Open will begin on August 22 followed by semi-finals on August 27.
  • Both singles finals will take place on August 28.
  • The tournament is slated to be completed just before the US Open that is scheduled between August 31 and September 13 at the same venue.

China Open among Four Events Cancelled

  • This year`s China Open, scheduled to run from September 15-20 in Changzhou, has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) said.
  • The BWF also said that the Taiwan Open (September 1-6), Korea Open (September 8-13) and Japan Open (September 22-27) had also been cancelled.
  • The China Open was one of three BWF Super-1000 category events scheduled during the year. The All England Open was held in Birmingham in March but the Indonesia Open, which had been scheduled for June 16-21 in Jakarta, was cancelled.
  • The BWF had cancelled the China Masters and Dutch Open earlier this month. The season-ending World Tour Finals in Guangzhou, China, is still on the calendar and will conclude on December 20.

Green-Ag Project in Mizoram

  • Green-Agriculture (Green-Ag), a project funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) was launched in Mizoram, India. It was launched by Agriculture Minister of Mizoram C. Lalrinsanga.The project will be implemented in Dampa Tiger Reserve in west Mizorams Mamit district and Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary in Lunglei district in the southern part of the state covering more than 30 villages.
  • Mizoram is among the five states where the Green-Ag project, funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF), is being implemented. The other states are Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand.
  • As per Lalrinsanga, the launch of the project and inclusion of Mizoram among the five states is a milestone for the northeastern state.
  • The project seeks to mainstream biodiversity, climate change, sustainable land management objectives and practices into the agriculture sector.

Guwahati Gets Northeast's First Manhole Cleaning Robot 'BANDICOOT'

  • The Northeast got its first-ever manhole cleaning robot to end manual scavenging. Manholes in Guwahati will now be cleaned by robots named 'BANDICOOT'. The robot was procured by Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The robot, given by Indian Oil Corporation, was inaugurated by Guwahati Development Department (GDD) Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya. The BANDICOOT robot is also the first of its kind in the world. 'BANDICOOT' was developed by a start-up India company called Genrobotics. The robot was developed under the Make in India initiative. It was funded by CSR of Indian Oil Corporation Limited. Guwahati is India's third city to procure this innovative technology to clean manholes. Earlier, Gurugram and Coimbatore had procured BANDICOOT robots.

Punjab is Part of India, UK on Khalistani Extremist Group Planning Referendum

  • The British government rejected the Khalistani extremist group Sikhs for Justice's Referendum 2020 which seeks the separation of Punjab from rest of India saying that it considers Punjab as part of India.
  • A British High Commission spokesperson in response to a question on the SFJ-led referendum said, "This is a matter for the government and people of India, not foreign countries or overseas organisations. While we support the right of anyone to voice their opinion, the UK government is not involved in anyway with this unofficial and non-binding referendum," he said, adding, "We consider the Indian Punjab to be a part of India."
  • The so-called referendum is to form an "Independent country" in India's Punjab and has found support in Pakistan. Referendum posters have been seen at important Sikh gurudwaras, a matter that was raised with Islamabad by New Delhi.
  • The development comes, days after Canada dismissed support for Khalistani separatism. Last weekend, the Canadian foreign ministry had said, "The Canada-India bilateral relationship is a priority for the government of Canada. We respect the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of India."

First Batch of Rafale Jets Lands at Ambala

  • The first lot of Rafale fighter jets touched down at the Indian Air Force base, Ambala, marking an incremental increase in the arc of operations and capability to strike.
  • The five jets, part of the 36 ordered from Dassault Aviation of France, arrived to a rousing welcome. They are the first step to building up the IAF strength to 42 fighter jet squadrons (16-18 jets in each). The IAF currently has 31 squadrons, including five with MiG-21s, which should have been ideally decommissioned by now.
  • The Indian forces assess a need for 42 squadrons (some 18 planes in each) to tackle a two-front war with Pakistan and China simultaneously. The remaining 31 Rafales will be delivered progressively till May 2023 or over the next 34 months. Also, 20 LCA (Light Combat Aircraft) Tejas will be inducted over the next two years, which will be added to the existing fleet of 20 Tejas fighters.

The US and Australia See Key Role for India in Indo-Pacific Security

  • India will have a key role in defence cooperation and post-Covid-19 recovery efforts in the Indo-Pacific by the US and Australia, which plan to strengthen partnerships in the region to ensure it remains secure, inclusive and rules-based.
  • The matter figured in a meeting between US secretary of state Mike Pompeo and defence secretary Mark Esper and their Australian counterparts Marise Payne and Linda Reynolds in Washington, with a joint statement issued by the two sides making several references to India's role in the Indo-Pacific.
  • The US and Australia also expressed serious concerns about China's "recent coercive and destabilising actions across the Indo-Pacific", and the two countries said the Covid-19 pandemic has "created incentives for some actors to pursue strategic gains in ways that undermine the rules-based international order and regional stability".
  • The development comes at a time when India is set to include Australia in the Malabar naval exercise that it conducts with the US and Japan, and against the backdrop of the months-old border standoff with China.
  • The US-Australia joint statement said the Indo-Pacific remains the focus of their alliance and that two countries are "working side-by-side, including with Asean, India, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Five Eyes partners, to strengthen our networked structure of alliances and partnerships to maintain a region that is secure, prosperous, inclusive, and rules-based".

ICRA Appoints N. Srinivasan as MD and Group CEO

  • Domestic rating agency ICRA appointed N. Sivaraman as its new Managing Director and group Chief Executive Officer, more than a year after its previous head was forced to proceed on leave.
  • Sivaraman, who has spent over 34 years with engineering major L&T, will drive the agency's business strategy and innovation, build organisational capabilities, and strengthen objectivity of ratings.
  • Last July, ICRA board asked its then managing director and group chief executive Naresh Takkar to go on leave till the completion of an enquiry against him after an anonymous complaint was sent to markets regulator Sebi. It was alleged that there were malpractices in the rating of IL&FS where financial troubles came to light in late 2018.
  • The agency had then named Chief Financial Officer Vipul Agarwal as the interim Chief Operating Officer.

  • The Ministry of Earth Sciences announced the National Awards for excellence in Earth System Science. The Ministry awarded the Lifetime Excellence Award 2020 to Professor Ashok Sahni for his major contribution in the field of Biostratigraphy, Geology and Vertebrate Paleontology.
  • The Ministry has always aimed at providing due platform and recognition to the major scientific contributions that have been made by the eminent engineers and scientists in various fields of Earth System Sciences.
  • The National Award for the Ocean Science and Technology was awarded to Dr. V.V.S.S. Sharma. He is a Senior Principle Scientist at CSIR- National Institute of Oceanography at Vishakhapatnam.
  • M. Ravichandran, Director of National centre for Polar and Ocean Research, Goa was also awarded the National Award for Ocean Science and Technology.
  • The National Award for the Atmospheric Science and Technology by the Ministry of Earth Sciences was presented to Dr. S. Suresh Babu.
  • The Ministry of Earth Sciences is mandated to provide the nation with the best possible services for climate, weather, ocean, coastal and natural hazards for the socio-economic benefits or public safety.

IIT Gandhinagar Concludes First Ever Pan-India Workshop for Women in Computing

  • The third edition of the ACM India Grad Cohort, a pan-India virtual workshop for women in computing, hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN), was a three day online event held in July 2020.
  • The workshop was co-organised by IITGN, ACM-W India Council (the Association for Computing Machinery's India Council on Women in Computing), and the ACM India Council, and was supported by Google and TCS.
  • The three-day online event received an overwhelming response as over 200 women graduate students from the field of computing registered for the workshop, and over one hundred participants attended each of the 16 sessions.
  • The workshop was outlined with interesting interactive sessions with experienced women researchers from the field of Computer Science & Engineering from across the world with an aim to help Indian women graduate students in the field of computing deal with various situations through their graduate years and beyond.

Harsh Vardhan Releases E-book on Standard Treatment Guidelines for the Management of Substance Use Disorders and Behavioural Addictions

  • Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare released the e-book titled "Standard Treatment Guidelines for the Management of Substance Use Disorders and Behavioural Addictions" that aims to tackle substance abuse and behavioral addiction in the country, through video conference, in the presence of Ashwini Kumar Choubey, MoS (HFW).
  • Speaking on Substance Use Disorder as a growing public health problem, especially among youth and adolescents, Ashwini K. Choubey said that such problems will become more rampant as society adopts modern lifestyle. The Behavioural change also manifests in increased rate of suicides which we have seen during the COVID pandemic. He commended the Drug Deaddiction Program (DDAP) under the Health Ministry and other stakeholders for implementing such initiatives across throughout the country.
  • Dr. Harsh Vardhan spoke on the harmful association of Substance Use with non-communicable disorders (NCDs) like cardiovascular, cancer, road traffic injury, as well as mental health is well established. He also expressed his satisfaction that "behavioural addictions like gambling, shopping, cyber-relational and cyber-sexual addictions including over-involvement in online relationship and pornography and addiction to online games has been included in the standard treatment guidelines.

M. Venkaiah Naidu Unveils 'Padi Bhavajaalalu' Telugu Version Of Late S. Jaipal Reddy's 'Ten Ideologies' Book

  • M. Venkaiah Naidu, Vice President of India virtually unveiled the "Padi Bhavajaalalu" Telugu version 'Ten Ideologies' book authored by former Union Minister Late S. Jaipal Reddy and published by Orient BlackSwan, amid his family members and followers on the event of his first death anniversary.
  • The virtual launch was organised under the aegis of Manthan, a forum for public discourse.
  • Padi Bhavajaalalu – Vyavasiyikaparisramikasamajalamadhyaoka Naha antaramloNetosankshibhamoolalu is a Telugu translation of "Ten Ideologies- The great asymmetry between agrarianism and industrialism".
  • The translation was done by Kalluri Bhaskaram.
  • The original English version of the book was launched by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in August 2018.
