United States Eases Export Restrictions on Unmanned Drones
In a significant development, the Donald Trump administration relaxed standards for exporting drones to friendly countries.
Under the new policy, drones that fly at speeds below 800 km per hour are no longer subject to the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).
This policy change modernises the approach to implementing the MTCR commitments. It makes it more reflective of the technological realities.
Higher-speed systems such as cruise missiles, hypersonic aerial vehicles, and advanced unmanned combat aerial vehicles are not affected by this revision.
Vietnam Bans Wildlife Imports, Markets Amid New Health Fears
An order signed by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc bans all imports of wildlife dead or alive and includes eggs and larvae. It also merits tougher penalties for crimes involving the trade in wildlife.
Vietnam has been a popular destination for wildlife products – often from endangered species – that are used in traditional medicine or in preparing exotic cuisine. The move comes amid increased scrutiny of the health risks of the wildlife trade as the world deals with the new coronavirus, which is thought to have jumped from animals to humans.
The new directive includes recommendations that conservationists have been making for years, including cracking down on domestic markets.
India-UK Hold 14th Joint Economic and Trade Committee Meeting
India and the U.K. have affirmed their commitment to negotiate a free trade agreement (FTA) with a view to further strengthening economic ties.
The issue was discussed in the 14th Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) meeting between the two countries. It was co-chaired by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and U.K. Secretary of State for International Trade Elizabeth Truss.
RBI Signs $400 mn Currency Swap with Sri Lanka
The Reserve Bank of India signed necessary documents for extending $ 400 million currency swap facility to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. This currency swap arrangement, which will remain available till November 2022 will help Colombo address the economic hardships caused due by pandemic.
Based on the request from the Sri Lankan side for a currency swap facility under the SAARC Currency Swap Framework, India extended a $ 400 million currency swap under the SAARC framework.
The signing of the currency swap agreement with Sri Lanka illustrates India's commitment to assist its friendly neighbour on its economic revival during the time of Covid-19 pandemic.
TRIFED Signs MoU with IIT Delhi under Govt's 'Unnat Bharat Abhiyan'
The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) entered into a partnership with IIT Delhi under the HRD Ministry's flagship 'Unnat Bharat Abhiyan' (UBA) to boost livelihood opportunities and income generation for tribal communities.
The UBA connects higher education institutions with villages for the economic and social betterment of rural communities.
TRIFED functions under the Tribal Affairs Ministry.
Under TRIFED's 'Van Dhan' programme, tribal entrepreneurs will now be able to get access to the expertise of the entire network of more than 2,600 academic and research institutions under the UBA.
With the partnership with IIT Delhi and 'Unnat Bharat Abhiyan', these tribal forest dwellers engaged in MFPs will get exposure to newer processing technologies, product innovation, mentorship, transformational digital systems and hand holding.
Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that Haryana will host the fourth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games after the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The Games will be held in Panchkula.
Haryana has done well in all three editions of KIYG. While they came second in both 2019 and 2020 editions (200 medals in 2020 and 159 medals in 2019) in 2018 Haryana got 102 podium finishes (38 gold, 26 silver, 38 bronze).
Khelo India Youth Games, formerly Khelo India School Games, means Play India Youth Games, held annually in January or February, are the national level multidisciplinary grassroot games in India held for two categories, namely under-17 years school students and under-21 college students.
On 31 January 2018, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurated Khelo India School Games at the opening ceremony based on Guru–shishya tradition held at Indira Gandhi Arena. From the 2019 events, Khelo India School Games were renamed to Khelo India Youth Games.
Union Civil Aviation Ministry Sets the Stage for Greenfield Airport at Pantnagar
Union Civli Aviation Ministry cleared the deck for Greenfield Airport at Uttrakhand's Pantnagar by submitting pre-feasibility report for airport.
The pre-feasibility report was submitted by Aviation Secretary Pradeep Kharola and Airport Authority of India chairman Arvind Singh to Uttrakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat.
As per reports, Kharola and Singh submitted the report giving a 'yes' to 1100 acre land for Greenfield airport at Pantnagar after inspecting the land earmarked for the project.
The Ministry has also proposed that the Greenfield airport at Pantnagar would be upgraded to international airport in future.
Pantnagar airport currently has about 267 acres of land with a 530 sqm of passenger terminal. The current handling capacity of the airport is 50 passengers in peak hours. CM Rawat has directed the concerned officials to complete the necessary procedures for the greenfield airport as soon as possible.
India-EU Renew Agreement to Expand Scientific and Technological Cooperation
India and the European Union have renewed their agreement to expand scientific and technological cooperation aimed at strengthening their collaboration in this area in the next five years. Last week, the two sides agreed to renew the agreement on scientific cooperation till 2025 at the 15th India-EU Summit, which was led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the Indian side.
The European Union delegation was headed by European Council President Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The agreement was initially signed on November 23, 2001, and renewed in 2007 and 2015.
Kashmir Saffron Gets GI Certificate
Saffron grown in Kashmir received the geographical indication (GI) tag, with Lieutenant Governor G. C. Murmu said that it is a major historic step in bringing the valley's brand on the global map. The Union government issued a certificate of GI registration for the saffron grown in the Kashmir Valley.
Soon after taking over as lieutenant governor, Girish Chander Murmu took a personal interest in ensuring that Kashmir saffron gets GI certification. Pampore, the hub of saffron in Kashmir, is expected to have a bumper crop of the spice this season due to initiatives taken by the National Mission on Saffron (NMS).
Under the NMS, a project of Rs. 411 crore was approved by the Union government under which an area of 3,715 hectare for saffron was proposed to be rejuvenated. The GI certification will stop the prevalent adulteration of Kashmir saffron, thereby, authenticated saffron will fetch much better prices.
With the GI tag, Kashmir saffron will acquire more prominence in export market and will help farmers get the best price for it.
Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah saluted the unwavering courage, patriotism and valour of Indian soldiers on the 21st anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed every year on 26th July to mark India's triumph over Pakistan in 1999.
Indian armed forces had defeated Pakistan on July 26, 1999, and the day is marked as Kargil Vijay Diwas to rekindle the pride and valour of the soldiers who took part in Operation Vijay.
India launched Operation Vijay to clear the posts in the high-altitude Kargil sector, which was occupied by the Pakistani soldiers and infiltrators on the Indian side of the Line of Control.
The armies of the nuclear-armed nations fought the war between May and July in Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir and elsewhere along the LoC. It took about three months for the Indian forces to recapture the posts.
National Parent's Day
Every Year on the fourth Sunday of July (this year 26 July) National parent's Day is celebrated to recognise the role of parents in children's life.
Parents' Day is observed in South Korea (May 8) and in the United States (fourth Sunday of July). The South Korean designation was established in 1973, replacing the Mother's Day previously marked on May 8, and includes public and private celebrations. The United States day was created in 1994 under President Bill Clinton. June 1 has also been proclaimed as "Global Day of Parents" by the United Nations as a mark of appreciation for the commitment of parents towards their children. In the Philippines, while it is not strictly observed or celebrated, the first Monday of December each year is proclaimed as Parents' Day.
The Maharashtra government announced to cut down the syllabus of classes 1 to 12 by 25 per cent due to the outbreak of the coronavirus.
According to Varsha Gaikwad, Minister Of School Education, Maharashtra, even due to the coronavirus outbreak in the state, the academic year 2020-21 has started from June 15 and the ministry has taken various alternative methods to reach out to students.
Earlier this month month, Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank had rationalised the syllabus for classes 9-12 of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) up to 30 per cent by retaining the core subjects.
