India and Chile Join the Food and Agriculture Organisationof the United Nations

  • India and Chile joined the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) and co-hosted the official launch of 2021 International Year of Fruits and Vegetables, the side event of 2020 High-level Political forum – "On the road to the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables 2021: Highlighting health and nutritional benefits through sustainable production and consumption of fruits and vegetables".
  • The aim of the event is for the relevant stakeholders to discuss the key roles of fruits and vegetables in health, sustainable production systems, income and employment generation and other dimensions.
  • Following the request of FAO, The United Nations adopted the resolution A/RES/74/244 on 19th December 2019, designating 2021 as the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables to acknowledge the nutritional and health benefits of consuming fruits and vegetables and to create awareness about the increasing loss and waste in fruits and vegetables and their negative impacts on the global economy.

Tunisia PM Quits Amid Alleged Financial Scandal

  • The Tunisian Prime Minister Elyes el-Fakhfakh resigned.
  • This comes following intense pressure on Mr. Fakhfakh from members of parliament the past week over a brewing alleged financial scandal.
  • He lasted less than six months as Prime Minister, making this the shortest time in office for a Tunisian government.
  • Mr. Fakhfakh's resignation also came after rifts in parliament, led by the moderate Islamist party Ennahda, and threats by lawmakers to withdraw confidence in his government over alleged conflict of interest.
  • He is accused of maintaining shares in private companies that won state contracts amounting to $15m (£12m).
  • The President is expected to appoint Mr. Fakhfakh's successor within a week's time - who will have a maximum of two months to form a government that wins the confidence of lawmakers.

Poba Reserve Forest in Assam"s Dhemaji to be Upgraded to Wildlife Sanctuary

  • The Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, announced the upgradation of Poba Reserve Forest, a vital biodiversity hotspot in Dhemaji district of Assam, as a wildlife sanctuary. The announcement was made during a meeting with senior officials of Lakhimpur, Dhemaji and Majuli districts at Jonai.
  • Declared in 1924 as Poba Reserve Forest, it has an area of 10,522 hectares and is home to a large number of flora and fauna.
  • Poba is one of the richest rain forests of North-East India in terms of the flora and fauna found in it and can be very well termed a biodiversity hotspot.
  • The Reserved Forest (RF) was created in the year 1924.

Google Picks Stake in Jio Platforms

  • US tech giant Google invested Rs. 33,737 crore in Jio Platforms for a 7.7% stake. This makes Google the 13th investor in the Reliance Industries subsidiary, valuing the mobile to digital firm. The investment makes it a zero debt company. Ambani said that Jio's target of capital raising was now complete.
  • Google became the second largest investor in Jio after Facebook which has a 9.9% stake in the company.
  • This would be the first time Facebook and Google, competitors for user data, will be investors in the same company.
  • Jio Platforms and Google have also entered into a commercial agreement to jointly develop an entry level affordable smartphone with optimizations to the Android operating system and the Play Store.

India Posts First Trade Surplus in 18 Years

  • According to official data released, India registered a trade surplus after almost two decades with the balance in June turning in the country's favour at $790 million. Economists have termed the surplus unpalatable and temporary. The previous trade surplus was in January 2002.
  • India's exports contracted for the fourth consecutive month and shrank 12.41% to $21.91 billion in June led down by lower shipments of petroleum, textiles, engineering goods, and gems and jewellery.
  • With 26 of the 30 major items of imports contracting in June, overall imports plummeted a steep 47.59% to $21.11 billion.

Coal Ministry to Link Mining Plan Portal with PARIVESH Website

  • The ministry of coal is planning to link the mining plan portal with PARIVESH website, a single-window hub for online submission, monitoring, and management of proposals submitted to the Environment Ministry by project proponents to seek various types of environment clearances.
  • This announcement was made by Coal Secretary Anil Kumar Jain during a stakeholder consultation on auction of coal mines for commercial mining organised by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
  • In June 2020, the government launched the auction process for 41 coal blocks for commercial mining, a move that opens India's coal sector for private players, and termed it a major step in the direction of achieving self-reliance.

FIFA Announces Schedule for World Cup 2022

  • FIFA announced the schedule for the World Cup 2022, where the hosts, Qatar, will kick-off the tournament at the Al Bayt Stadium on November 21, 2022.
  • The Khalifa International Stadium in Al Rayyan, that hosted the Asian Games, the Gulf Cup, the AFC Asian Cup and five matches of the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup, will see the play-off match for the third place in December 2020.
  • The final will kick off on December 18 at the Lusail Stadium which has a capacity to accommodate 80,000 people.
  • According to FIFA, the group stage will last for 12 days with an aim to provide all teams with optimal rest between their matches.

Anji Khad Bridge: Indian Railways' 1st Cable-stayed Rail Bridge

  • According to Minister of Railways, Piyush Vedprakash Goyal, India's first cable-stayed Indian Railways bridge namely "Anji Khad Bridge" being developed by Konkan Railway Corporation Limited (KRCL), a Government of India undertaking, is all set to connect Katra and Reasi in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). The cable-stayed railway bridge is a part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which passes through the Young Himalayas.
  • The USBRL project also involves the Chenab River Bridge. The Chenab Bridge once completed, will become the world's highest rail bridge.
  • The total length of the Anji Khad Bridge is 473.25 metres.

Simanchala Dash Gets Extension as Principal Special Director, Enforcement Directorate

  • Senior revenue service officer Simanchala Dash was given one-year extension as Principal Special Director, Enforcement Directorate.
  • Dash is an Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) officer of 1988 batch.
  • Dash, former Private Secretary to then Finance Minister (late) Arun Jaitley, was in March 2018 appointed as the Principal Special Director, a newly created post then.
  • His appointment was for two years in the Central probe agency, tasked with investigating money laundering among other related offences.
  • Sanjay Kumar Mishra, IRS (Income Tax) officer of 1984 batch, is the chief of the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Congress Dissolves District, Block Committees in Rajasthan

  • The Congress dissolved its all district and block committees in Rajasthan in a bid to revamp the state unit of the party. Announcing the decision, AICC general secretary in-charge for the Rajasthan Congress Avinash Pande said that new committees will be formed soon.
  • The decision came in the wake of Sachin Pilot's sacking as the Deputy Chief Minister and the state Congress Chief. The move is considered a step forward in removing all Pilot's men holding party positions at the grassroots level.

Fiscal Powers for Forces to Meet Urgent Needs

  • In view of the prevailing situation along the northern borders, a special meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, delegated financial powers for urgent 'capital acquisition' projects up to Rs. 300 crore to the armed forces to meet urgent operational needs.
  • These include acquisition of weapons and equipment under the 'capital head' of the defence Budget. Till now, financial powers up to Rs. 500 crore under the 'revenue head' were vested with the Vice-Chief of the Army.
  • The move will shrink procurement timelines, ensure placement of orders within six months and deliveries within a year.
  • The Defence Ministry has also decided on pension for armed forces personnel with less than 10 years of service who have been rendered invalid. This includes physical and mental infirmity neither attributable to nor aggravated by service.

Defence Research Body Develops Fully Indigenous P7 Heavy Drop System

  • DRDO developed P7 Heavy Drop System which is capable of para dropping military stores up to 7-tonve weight class from IL 76 aircraft.
  • This system is fully indigenous and being manufactured by L&T who makes the platform system, parachutes manufactured by Ordnance Factory.
  • This system has been made under the Make in India programme.
  • According to DRDO, as part of mandatory requirement prior to accord Bulk Production Clearance (BPC), joint team of Indian Army, IAF and ADRDE conducted validation Trials at Agra, on two systems, which were dropped from IL76 ac from an altitude of 600 mtrs at 280 kmph speed. The store landed safely with the help of cluster of five large size parachutes (750 sqm each).
  • The system would be a force multiplier for armed forces, while enabling the rapid delivery of combat store in the far flung inaccessible areas.

Malini Parthasarathy New Chairperson of The Hindu Group

  • Malini Parthasarathy took over as the new Chairperson of The Hindu Group of Publications. She replaced N. Ram.
  • Parthasarathy was the Co-Chairperson of The Hindu Group of Publications also the former Editor of The Hindu (2013-16).
  • She was earlier Executive Editor of the paper from 1996 to 2004. Parthasarathy has been a political journalist for three decades and more, writing reports and editorials on major themes in Indian politics and on India's foreign policy, with a major focus on relations with Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • She also founded The Hindu Centre for Politics and Public Policy, a think-tank intended to highlight and scrutinise critical public policy and institutional issues of concern in the national arena. The Centre was launched in January 2013 under the auspices of The Hindu group. She was the Director of the Centre at its inception.

ADB Appoints Ashok Lavasa as Vice President

  • Election Commissioner Ashok Lavasa, who was next in the line to head the poll panel, has been appointed as vice president for Private Sector Operations and Public-Private Partnerships at the Asian Development Bank. The surprise announcement was made by the regional development bank.
  • Lavasa would be only the second Election Commissioner to step down from the poll panel before completion of his term. The last time an Election Commissioner put in his papers was in 1973 when Chief Election Commissioner Nagendra Singh was appointed a judge in the International Court of Justice at The Hague.
  • Lavasa succeeds Diwakar Gupta whose term ends on August 31.
  • Lavasa was appointed as Election Commissioner in January 2018.

Fifteenth Summit between India and the EU

  • The 15th Summit between India and the European Union was held in virtual format. India was represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The EU was represented by Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
  • According to a Joint Statement of the India-EU Summit, the leaders decided to strengthen the India-EU Strategic Partnership, based on shared principles and values of democracy, freedom, rule of law, and respect for human rights, aiming at delivering concrete benefits for the people in India and the EU.
  • As the world's two largest democracies, India and the EU affirmed their determination to promote effective multilateralism and a rules-based multilateral order with the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation at its core.

World Youth Skills Day

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a digital conclave, on the occasion of World Youth Skills Day (WYSD).
  • This day marked the fifth anniversary of the launch of Skill India Mission. The conclave was organised by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.
  • WYSD is an event recognised by the United Nations and is celebrated on July 15 every year. It was designated by the General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014.

NEET: Tamil Nadu Approves 7.5% Quota for Govt. School Students in Medical Admission

  • The Tamil Nadu Cabinet approved the provision of a 7.5 per cent quota within the existing reservation in medical UG courses for the students of state government higher secondary schools. The "quota within quota" covers government seats in private colleges too.
  • It will be applicable for students clearing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Tamil Nadu had earlier sought exemption from NEET, which has faced stiff opposition from political parties, including the DMK, citing the welfare of students, especially those from rural areas.
