United States Revokes Hong Kong's Special Status

  • The United States has revoked Hong Kong's special status under US law, opening the way for the city to be stripped of trading privileges, as Washington accused China of trampling on the territory's autonomy.
  • The decision came as China's rubber-stamp parliament was set to vote on a new Hong Kong security law, a move that has triggered renewed protests. 
  • Under legislation passed last year (2019) to support Hong Kong's pro-democracy protesters, the US administration must certify that the city still enjoys the freedoms promised by Beijing when it negotiated with Britain to take back the colony.

Punitus Sanctus: New Freshwater Fish

  • The fish has been identified and named by the Department of Zoology, BJM Government College in Kollam. Sanctus means holy (pilgrim town) in Latin.
  • Species of Puntius are known from India mainly from the drainages of the Western and Eastern Ghats, as well as the Eastern Himalayas.
  • Recently, Puntius Sanctus, a new freshwater fish, has been found in Velankanni, Tamil Nadu. It has been found in a small waterbody.

  • Vakrangee announced Corporate Agency (Registration Code CA0249) tied up with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to distribute Micro Insurance products through Nextgen Vakrangee Kendra network.
  • Vakrangee shall provide the Solicitation and sale of the LIC's micro insurance products. Further it also includes, Follow up for Collection and remittance of renewal premium of LIC's micro insurance policies.

ISRO Gets Patent to Manufacture 'Moon Soil'

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has secured a patent for its method of producing highland lunar soil simulant or "moon soil".
  • It is made using similar rock samples found at the Sittampundi Anorthosite Complex, located 67 km from Salem in Tamil Nadu.
  • The simulant prepared by ISRO is akin to the regolith, which is a loose unconsolidated rock that settles on the bedrock of the lunar highland region, which can be used to improve the mobility of the rover or to study lunar soil.
  • It could also help with experiments and researches on ways to construct structures on the Moon's surface and make progress in lunar locomotive engineering.

Facebook Launches 'Collab' Music-Making App

  • From a messaging app for Apple Watch to meme creator and discovery platform, Facebook is experimenting on several consumer-focused apps under a new team called 'NPE Teams, from Facebook'.
  • The new addition to the list is a music collaboration app, which allows content creators and fans to create, watch, and mix and match original music videos. Named Collab, the iOS app will be available through invite-based model.
  • To request access, you need to sign up for a waitlist. Invites will be send in batches, starting with people in the US and Canada.
  • The content created using Collab app can be published on other platforms, including Facebook-owned Instagram and Facebook Stories.

NPCI Launches AI Virtual Assistant PAi

  • National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) said that it has launched an artificial intelligence (AI) based chatbot, PAi, to create awareness around its products like FASTag, RuPay, UPI, AePS on a real time basis.
  • This is yet another NPCI's initiative to improve digital financial inclusion in India.
  • The AI virtual assistant, PAi is available round the clock helping users with access to accurate information on NPCI products.
  • Customers can ask their queries in English and Hindi, via text or voice on the websites of NPCI, RuPay, and UPI Chalega.
  • Through PAi, users get verified automated responses to their queries on all NPCI's products. PAi would also be accessible to global RuPay Cardholders as well.

State Amends FRA to Clear More Claims on Forest Land

  • The notification issued on May, 2020, stated that the Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari has made certain modifications in Section 6 of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, (also called as Forest Rights Act-FRA) in its application to the Scheduled Areas of the State of Maharashtra, by exercising the powers conferred upon him by Schedule V of the Constitution. 
  • Purpose of modifications- Modification is to provide justice to the tribals whose Individual Forest rights or Community Forest rights have been rejected by the District Level Committee(DLC) constituted under FRA.
  • As per the modification a provision has been incorporated to enable rightful claimants of the forest rights to appeal against the Order of the DLC.

Kargil's First Solar Lift Irrigation Plant Inaugurated

  • In Ladakh, Director of Animal, Sheep Husbandry and Fisheries Dr Mohammad Raza inaugurated the first Solar Lift Irrigation Plant of Kargil with five KW Solar Plant and three HP Submersible Pump at Yak Breeding Farm, Bodh Kharboo keeping in view the protocols of social distancing and Standard Operating Prcedures.
  • Chief Animal Husbandry Officer, Kargil Dr Fida Hussain said that Yak Breeding Farm, Bodh Kharboo has an allotment under special package of 1.20 crore rupees by the Government of India under Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) and this Solar Irrigation Pump will help in proper utilization of this fund in the Farm.

Karnataka to Launch 'State Health Register' of all Citizens

  • Karnataka government on May 27, 2020 announced that it will be launching a new project to maintain a 'State Health Register' comprising the database of all its citizens.
  • The health register, first-of-its-kind, will be a robust and standardized health repository of all the citizens of the state.
  • Elaborating on the same, Karnataka's Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar stated that the COVID-19 experience has demonstrated the need to maintain a robust, real-time repository of health data of each and every citizen.
  • The project will be first launched in Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka on an experimental basis.

Zomato Elevates CEO of Food Delivery biz Mohit Gupta as Co-Founder

  • Online food delivery platform Zomato has elevated the CEO of its food delivery business, Mohit Gupta, to the position of co-founder.
  • The Ant Financial-backed firm now has four active co-founders: Deepinder Goyal, Gunjan Patidar, Gaurav Gupta and Mohit Gupta.
  • Pankaj Chaddah, who set up Zomato in 2008 with Goyal, quit the company after a ten-year stint. In 2019, he set up healthtech platform Mindhouse.

JPMorgan's Kalpana Morparia Set to Retire, Leo Puri to Take Over

  •  Kalpana Morparia, chairman, South and Southeast Asia, JPMorgan, has announced her desire to retire from the American bank, after more than a decade at the helm.
  • She will stay on with the bank till the end of the first quarter of fiscal year 2021 and oversee her succession.
  • Leo Puri, who was the managing director and chief executive of UTI Mutual Fund, will take charge as the new chairman of South and Southeast Asia of JPMorgan.
  • Puri had joined the struggling asset management company (AMC) in 2013 from Warburg Pincus India, where he was the managing director.
  • Puri stepped down from the AMC in 2018 after domestic investors State Bank of India (SBI), Life Insurance Corp. of India, Punjab National Bank and Bank of Baroda, locked horns with the single largest investor, the US's T Rowe Price.

World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2020

  • World Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed on May 28. The main idea behind marking this day is to change the social stigma associated with menstruation.
  • The date May 28 was chosen to observe the day because on an average the menstrual cycle for most women is 28 days and the menstruation period for most women is for five days. Hence, the date was kept as 28/5.
  • World Menstrual Hygiene Day 2020 theme was 'Periods in Pandemic'.

International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers

  • The "International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers", May 29, is "an international day to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication, and courage and to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace."
  • It was so designated by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 57/129, on December 11, 2002, after an official request of the Ukrainian Peacekeepers Association and the Government of Ukraine to the UN General Assembly and first celebrated in 2003.

Cognac Bottle, Labelled One of World's Oldest, Sells for £118,000

  •  One of the world's oldest bottles of Cognac has been sold in an online auction for £118,580.
  • The spirit dates back to 1762 and has been stored in a family cellar for the past 140 years.
  • The bottle was bought by a private collector in Asia and has set a record for the most expensive bottle of Cognac sold at auction.
  • It is one of only three bottles of the rare Gautier Cognac still in existence.
  • Of the two other smaller bottles, one is in a museum in France and the other was sold at auction in New York in 2014 for about £48,000.
