MEA Announces Covid-19 Training Programme For SAARC Countries

  • The External Affairs Ministry announced rolling out of a training programme on management of coronavirus pandemic for healthcare professionals from SAARC countries from April 17, 2020.

  • "Announcing Innovation Challenge for Indian startups and innovators for developing a world-class video conferencing solution. Urge the innovators, software product startups to come forward and take part in this effort," Prasad tweeted.

Government initiates dialogue to resurrect agri sector exports in the aftermath of current COVID-19 crisis Following directions from Agriculture Minister Shri

  • Government has initiated a dialogue with the exporters of Agri and Allied commodities to address issues affecting the sector as a fallout of the lockdown to check the COVID-19 disease.
  • Following directions from the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, the Secretary, Department of Agriculture, Cooperation & Farmers Welfare, Shri Sanjay Agarwal held a video conference to gain a first- hand account of the problems being faced by the exporters of Agri and Allied commodities and initiate necessary steps by making meaningful interventions for early redressal of their problems to help them sustain though the current Covid-19 crisis.
  • Exporters, representatives of Associations of producers/exporters of agri commodities namely, Fruits, Vegetables, Basmati and Non-basmati Rice, Seeds, Flowers, Plants, Organic produce, Agriculture Equipment and Machinery participated in the meeting.

Ordinance To Give States Flexibility To Raise Work Hours Of Employees

  • The Centre will soon bring an ordinance to give state governments the flexibility to increase the work hours of employees across establishments to 12 hours per day from eight hours, a move aimed at addressing the issue of labour shortage and facilitate companies to maintain social distancing once factories resume operations after lockdown imposed due to Covid-19.
  • Labour ministry will soon bring an ordinance to enforce the Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions (OSH&WC) that empowers states or 'appropriate authority' to notify work hours. The ordinance is being contemplated as the Code, which is in parliament, is yet to be passed.

GiveIndia Starts India COVID Response Fund with Rs 75 cr In Initial Donations

  • Donation platform GiveIndia has launched the 'India COVID Response Fund' (ICRF) with initial donations worth Rs 75 crore to support the on-ground COVID relief efforts being carried out by its network of verified non-profits.
  • Some of the early donors to the fund include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Google.org, HSBC India, Omidyar Network India, UBS Optimus Foundation, Marico, Uber India (through Uber Care driver fund), Binny Bansal and A.T.E. Chandra Foundation.
  • The fund will use a data-backed approach to identify the most critical areas of intervention and scale the relief efforts pan India, a statement said.

US Approves Sale Of Anti-Ship Missiles, Torpedoes Worth USD 155 Million To India

  • The Trump administration has notified the Congress of its determination to sell Harpoon air-launched anti-ship missiles and Mark 54 lightweight torpedoes worth USD 155 million to India to enhance its deterrent capabilities against "regional threats" and to bolster its homeland defence.
  • The US recognised India as a "Major Defence Partner" in 2016. This designation allows India to buy more advanced and sensitive technologies from America at par with that of the US' closest allies and partners.

GoI Launches Sovereign Gold Bonds Scheme 2020-21

  • The Government of India, in consultation with the Reserve Bank of India, has decided to issue Sovereign Gold Bonds. The Sovereign Gold Bonds will be issued in six tranches from April 2020 to September 2020, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance. 
  • The Bonds will be sold through Scheduled Commercial banks (except Small Finance Banks and Payment Banks), Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited (SHCIL), designated post offices, and recognised stock exchanges viz., National Stock Exchange of India Limited and Bombay Stock Exchange Limited. 
  • The minimum investment limit for Sovereign Gold Bond is 1 gram of gold, while the maximum limit of subscription is 4 kg for individual, 4 kg for HUF and 20 kg for trusts and similar entities, as notified by the government from time to time. The tenor of the Bond will be for a period of 8 years with exit option after completion of five years.

Uttar Pradesh To Start Pool Testing For Covid-19 To Expedite Process

  • Uttar Pradesh has obtained clearance from the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) to start "pool testing" becoming the first in the country to attempt this method which aims at expediting the testing process for Covid-19.
  • Pool testing of a collection of samples is done using a single RTPCR ( Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) and has been used during large outbreaks and invisible community transmission.
  • Researchers from Israel have demonstrated that testing combined samples from up to 64 people for Covid-19 fastened the screening process and also brought down cost. Maharashtra is another state that has sought permission from ICMR to be allowed to use this testing method in the state.

CBSE Launches Free Live Fitness Classes

  • PM Narendra Modi  extended the Covid-19 lockdown to May 3, 2020 in India and students are now ready for another long wait before schools have any chance of re-opening. This calls for paying attention to the fitness of students who are stuck at home.
  • And CBSE has noted the problem and come up with free live fitness classes for its students available on social media channels with the aim of helping students "cultivate a sustainable and active lifestyle right from their younger days."
  • Keeping this in mind, CBSE and the Fit India Mission have collaborated to provide live sessions by experts covering a range of topics for holistic well-being of school going children, which will include simple actionable tips around Basic Exercises, Nutrition, Yoga & Meditation, boosting immunity etc.
  • These CBSE fitness classes will be available to everyone LIVE on Youtube, Facebook, Instagram daily at 9:30 am starting from April 15, 2020.

  • The ministry of tourism launched the Dekho Apna Desh webinar series.
  • The ministry said the webinar series will provide information on the many destinations and the 'depth' and 'expanse' of the culture and heritage of India. The first webinar touched upon the history of Delhi and was titled " City of Cities- Delhi's Personal Diary'.
  • The ministry said owing to COVID-19, tourism is hugely impacted with no domestic or international movement. But owing to technology, it is possible to visit places and destinations virtually and plan travels for a later date.
