India Opposes Pakistan Propaganda at Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference

  • India strongly opposed Pakistan's propaganda on Kashmir at General Assembly of Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Kampala, the capital of Uganda.
  • According to an official statement issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Pakistani Parliamentary Delegation raised the issue of Kashmir saying that "Indian military forces had seized Kashmir".
  • Opposing the Pakistani propaganda, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Roopa Ganguly hit back saying that the tradition of military rule is prevalent in Pakistan and that Islamabad had been under Army rule for 33 years.
  • An Indian parliamentary delegation led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla participated in the 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference held in Kampala, Uganda from September 22 to 29.
  • The delegation is comprised of Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Roopa Ganguly, MP (Rajya Sabha); L. Hanumanthaiah, MP (Rajya Sabha), Aparajita Sarangi, MP (Lok Sabha) and Snehlata Shrivastava, Secretary General, Lok Sabha.

RBI Initiates Prompt Corrective Action for Lakshmi Vilas Bank after Directors Probed For Alleged Fraud

  • The Reserve Bank of India initiated Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) against Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB) due to high level of bad loans, lack of sufficient capital to manage risks and negative return on assets for two consecutive years, the private sector lender.
  • The RBI move comes amidst the Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing registering a complaint against the board of LVB alleging cheating and misappropriation of funds.
  • The regulatory action may cast doubts over the proposed merger of Indiabulls Housing Finance with LVB, which is awaiting RBI nod.

HDFC Capital Advisors Looks to Raise $1 Billion in Affordable Housing Fund

  • After raising over $1 billion for its affordable funds, HDFC Capital Advisors — the property fund management company of HDFC — could raise a similar amount for its third affordable housing fund.
  • The fund manager is in talks with the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) to raise funds adding India's National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) could also put fresh money into the fund. HDFC Capital Advisors guides HDFC Capital Affordable Real Estate Fund 1 (H-CARE 1) and (H-CARE 2).

Ease of Doing Business: India among 20 Most Improved Countries

  • In a boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious target of India breaking into top 50 nations on the World Bank's ease of doing business ranking, the country figured among the 20 countries that have improved the most on the list. 
  • China, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Pakistan are also part of the list which, as per the bank "is purely based on the improvements across 10 different regulatory areas".

Aryna Sabalenka Beats Alison Riske in WTA Wuhan Final

  • Aryna Sabalenka became the first player to claim back-to-back titles in Wuhan thanks to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory over American Alison Riske in the final.
  • The 21-year-old improved her record at the event to a perfect 12-0 and joins Petra Kvitova as the only two-time Wuhan Open tennis champions.
  • Both players have enjoyed their greatest success at Chinese tournaments, with Sabalenka lifting her first Premier-level trophy in Wuhan 12 months ago –- one of two titles she had previously won in China -– and Riske reaching six of her nine career finals in the country.
  • Sabalenka had the better start, racing to a 5-1 lead before Riske slow.

  • Hamilton should never have been in contention to win in Sochi, but for the bumbling Scuderia throwing away a certain one-two after Vettel broke down and Charles Leclerc dropped from first to third.
  • Lewis ¬Hamilton took advantage of a ¬Ferrari meltdown to win in Russia and edge closer to a sixth Formula One world title.
  • As the Briton celebrated his ninth victory of the year, moving 73 points clear in the standings with just 130 points remaining, Mattia Binotto, the Ferrari team principal, was attempting to manage a driver crisis following the fallout from a curious agreement struck.

Kaushal Dharmamer Clinches Men's Singles Title at Maldives International Challenge

  • In badminton, Indian shuttler Kaushal Dharmamer clinched the men's singles title at the Maldives International Challenge with a straight-games win over Siril Verma in Male.
  • The 23-year-old from Mumbai, who won the Myanmar International Series earlier this month, registered a comfortable 21-13, 21-18 victory over his compatriot in a match that lasted 35 minutes.
  • In the women's doubles event, the duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy ended as runner-up after going down 10-21, 21-17, 12-21 in a hard fought battle to the Japanese pair of Sayak Hobara and Natsuki Soni.
  • Saipratheek Krishnaprasad and Ashwini Bhat went down 11-21, 15-21 to Thailand's Chaloempon Charoenkitamorn and Chasinee Korepap in the mixed doubles final.

BSP Releases List of 41 Candidates for Haryana Assembly Polls

  • BSP's Haryana Unit President Prakash Bharti released a list of 41 candidates for Haryana Assembly polls. The list has been cleared by Party Chief Mayawati. Out of 41 candidates, 12 are named from the reserved categories.
  • The list also contains names of two women candidates- one contesting from Shahbad (SC) seat and another from Pundri seat.

Congress Releases 51 Candidates in First List for Maharashtra

  • Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, current Congress state president Balasaheb Thorat and leader of the opposition in the assembly Namdevrao Wadettiwar were among the prominent names in party's first list of 51 candidates for Maharashtra elections slated for October 21, 2019.
  • Congress is contesting 125 seats in Maharashtra in alliance with Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) which will also contest the same number of seats. The remaining 38 seats in 288-member strong Maharashtra Assembly have been left for other friendly parties to contest.
  • The Congress had won 42 seats in the 2014 assembly elections and the NCP won 41.

Nitin Gadkari Inaugurated Delhi-Meerut Package-3

  • Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Delhi-Meerut Package-3 connecting Dasna in Ghaziabad to Hapur. The package is a 22 kilometre-long stretch built at cost of 1989 crore rupees. The package has six-lane section with two plus two lane service road on either sides. The ambitious project boasts several underpasses and construction of a major bridge across upper Ganga canal, which was a very big challenge. The 82 kilometre-long Delhi-Meerut Expressway connects Delhi with Meerut in western Uttar Pradesh.
  • The Delhi-Meerut Expressway project is being implemented in four packages - an 8.7 kilometre-long expressway from Sarai Kale Khan in Delhi to UP GATE, already completed in June 2018 under Phase-I and a 31.78 kilometre-long greenfield six-lane expressway from Hapur to Meerut, under Phase-IV is expected to be completed by the end of 2019.

  • Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched the website of 11th edition of DefEXpo, to be held in Lucknow from 5th to 8th February, 2020. The website, provides online services to exhibitors, besides hosting informative content about the product profile of Defence Public Sector Undertakings and Ordnance Factories.
  • The website enables exhibitors to register and book space online as per their requirements on first-come-first-serve basis, make online payments, book conference halls and venues for Business-to-Business meetings. Exhibitors can avail early bird discounts by booking space on the website before 31st October, 2019.

Former Foreign Secretary K. P. S. Menon Passes Away

  • Former Foreign Secretary K. P. S. Menon (Jr.) passed away at his residence near Kowdiar in Thiruvananthapuram on September 28, 2019. He was 90.
  • Mr. Menon was Foreign Secretary from 1987 to 1989. A 1951 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), he had also served as Ambassador to Bangladesh, Egypt, Japan, Hungary and China.
  • Mr. Menon, who hails from Palat House in Ottapalam in Palakkad, is survived by his wife Lalithamika and three sons Sivarama Menon, Shivasankara Menon and Siddhartha Menon. His father K.P.S. Menon (Senior) was the first Foreign Secretary of India and his nephew Shivsankara Menon was also Foreign Secretary and National Security Adviser.

CJI Recommends Justice Rajendra Menon as Chairperson of Armed Forces Tribunal

  • The Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said that Justice Rajendra Menon, former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court was recommended as the Chairperson of the Armed Forces Tribunal. 
  • The incumbent Chairperson Justice Virender Singh is retiring on October 6, 2019.

Kalia from 'Sholay', Actor Viju Khote, Passes Away

  • Veteran Hindi and Marathi film-theatre actor Viju Khote passed away due to multiple organ failure. He was 77.
  • The actor, most famous for playing the dacoit Kalia in 'Sholay' and Robert in 'Andaz Apna Apna', died at his residence.
  • The several popular feature films that Khote was a part of also included 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak' and 'Ventilator'. He also featured in the TV show 'Zabaan Sambhalke'.

International Translation Day

  • International Translation Day is celebrated every year on 30th September on the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered the patron saint of translators. The celebrations have been promoted by International Federation of Translators (FIT) ever since it was set up in 1953. In 1991 FIT launched the idea of an officially recognised International Translation Day to show solidarity of the worldwide translation community in an effort to promote the translation profession in different countries (not necessarily only in Christian ones). This is an opportunity to display pride in a profession that is becoming increasingly essential in the era of progressing globalisation.

  • Physicist Thanu Padmanabhan received the M. P. Birla Memorial Award 2019 for his contributions to the world of cosmology.
  • Padmanabhan, a professor of Inter-university Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics in Pune, received the award at a programme held at M. P. Birla Planetarium.
  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu presents the 28th Saraswati Samman to Dr. K. Siva Reddy in New Delhi. He lauded the KK Birla Foundation for creating a framework to adjudge the creative output in literature of different languages of our vast country to honour the most deserving.
  • Padmanabhan, a visiting faculty to several institutes in the US and the UK, has contributed to the fields of general relativity, gravitation and cosmology.

Kerala Tops the List for Best Performing State in Health

  • Kerala continued to top the list for the best performing State in the health sector among the 21 large States, while Uttar Pradesh retained the worst performer tag, according to the second edition of NITI Aayog's Health Index.
  • Kerala, which got an overall score of 74.01, was followed by Andhra Pradesh (65.13), Maharashtra (63.99), Gujarat (63.52) and Punjab (63.01), Himachal Pradesh (62.41), Jammu and Kashmir 62.37, Karnataka (61.14) and Tamil Nadu (60.41).
  • Uttar Pradesh continued to be at the bottom of the list with its score falling to 28.61. Other States at the bottom of the list were Bihar (32.11), Odisha (35.97) and Madhya Pradesh (38.39).

UP CM Inaugurated Mobile Hospital Near Kashi Vishwanath Temple

  • In Uttar Pradesh, the devotees coming from all over the world to Kashi Vishwanath temple would now get immediate emergency health care services if needed. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated Shri Kashi Vishwanath Arogya Mandir, a mobile hospital in the city. A team of doctors and paramedics will be available here and after stabilising serious patients, they would be shifted to the district or Banaras Hindu University Hospital.

Bathukamma Festivities Begun

  • As the sun sets, the lanes and by-lanes of Hanamkonda, Kazipet and Warangal brighten up. Women, young and old in their best attire head to the nearby temples and street corners to celebrate Bathukamma.
  • They carry trays arranged with a variety of flowers in a cone shape. They vie with one another in arranging the flowers as high as possible. Though the evening rituals last for an hour, the women wake up early and prompt their children to collect as many flowers as possible from the neighbourhood.
  • All the flowers available during the season "Cassia (thangedu), luffa (bera), celosia (gunugu), nelumbo (thamara) cucurbita (gummadi), marigold (banthi), crossandra (kanakambaram), ixora (ramabanam), hibiscus (mandhara), and so on are collected and attractively arranged. Women mostly gather at the Thousand Pillar temple, Bhadrakali temple, Padmakshi temple in Hanamkonda and some of them look for street corners in their respective localities. They form a circle and place their 'bathukammas' in the centre. They form a circle clapping and dancing rhythmically. All songs carry the essence 'long live mother' urging the goddess to take birth. These moments last for nine days during the Durga Navaratri celebrations preceding Vijayadasami.

  • Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Shri Prakash Javadekar inaugurated a unique exhibition on Mahatma Gandhi and Leo Tolstoy at Yasnaya Polyana, the birth place of Tolstoy in Russia. The exhibition presented and highlighted their correspondence and their thought process in a very artistic manner.
  • Local Duma member, Natalia Pilyus, Director of Tolstoy Cultural Centre and over 100 academicians were present on this special occasion.The Minister, who is on a visit to Russia to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting also, inaugurated a special day-long seminar organised to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi as part of 150 years of celebrating the Mahatma.

  • The festival of Navratri began in Gujarat from last evening with the launching of the grand Vibrant Navratri-Mahotsav 2019 at GMDC ground in Ahmedabad. Chief Minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated the Vibrant Navratri Mahotsav 2019.
  •  Navratri is the world's longest holistic dance festival to invoke the blessings of Mother Goddess, worshiped as Aadya Shakti. The festival attracts tourists from different states of India and abroad in Gujarat.
