MoU On Maldivian Civil Servants Training And Capacity Building Operationalised

  •  The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Maldives on Training and Capacity Building Programme for Maldivian Civil Servants became operational. 
  • This comes following discussions between senior officials of National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG), Department of AdministrativeReforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) from India and Maldives Civil Service Commission at Male (capital of Maldives).
  • PM Modi had emphasised India's 'Neighbourhood First' policy and assured India's full support to Maldives in realising its aspirations for broad based socio-economic development and strengthening of democratic and independent institutions.

Jaishankar Meets B'desh PM

  • External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar called on the Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and said India is looking forward to hosting her in October, 2019.
  • Jaishankar who is on a three-day visit to Bangladesh met his counterpart A K Abdul Momen.
  • Jaishankar described India-Bangladesh relations as a role model for other South Asian countries.

India Emits The Most Sulphur Dioxide In The World

  •  India is the largest emitter of sulphur dioxide (SO2) in the world, contributing more than 15 per cent of global anthropogenic emissions, according to a new report by Greenpeace released on August 19, 2019.
  • The primary reason for India's high emission output is the expansion of coal-based electricity generation over the past decade. Five of the top 10 SO2 emission hotspots from coal/power generation industry across the world are in India.
  • The analysis is based on hotspots detected by NASA Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) satellite data that captured more than 500 major source points of SO2 emissions across the globe including natural sources such as volcanoes.
  • However, the analysis excluded all natural sources and only anthropogenic sources of SO2 were investigated. SO2 emissions are a significant contributor to air pollution.

New Species Of Freshwater Fish Found

  •  Scientists of the Zoological Survey of India have discovered two new species of freshwater fish from the north-eastern and northern parts of the country.
  • While Glyptothorax gopii, a new species of catfish was found in Mizoram's Kaladan river, Garra simbalbaraensis was found in Himachal Pradesh's Simbalbara river.
  • Both fish, measuring less than seven centimetres, are hill stream fauna and are equipped with special morphological features to suit rapid water flow.
  • Glyptothorax gopii (measuring 63 mm standard length without caudal fin) is dark brown on its dorsal surface, and its ventral surface is of a yellowish-light brown.
  • Garra simbalbaraensis (measuring 69 mm standard length without caudal fin) has a yellowish-grey colour fading ventrally.

President Ram Nath Kovind Launches Plantation Drive As Part Of Van Mahotsav Celebrations

  •  President Ram Nath Kovind  planted a sapling of Maulsari in the Rashtrapati Bhavan Estate and launched a plantation drive as part of Van Mahotsav celebrations.
  • On the occasion, the President met students and urged them to encourage fellow citizens to plant more trees and reaffirm the commitment to a greener and sustainable planet. 
  • The President's Secretariat will be planting over three thousand trees and around three thousand shrubs. The President's Estate spread over 330 acres of harbours rich biodiversity.

Shell Exits City Gas Biz, Sells Stake To Mgl For ₹770 Crore

  •  Shell India, the local arm of Royal Dutch Shell Plc, sold its 10% stake in the city gas distribution business of Mumbai-based Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) for ₹770 crore.
  • BG Asia Pacific Holdings, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell, sold 9.98 million shares through block deals at ₹780 each.
  • Other key shareholders of Mahanagar Gas are state-run gas utility GAIL (India) Ltd and the Maharashtra government.
  • Mahanagar Gas sells compressed natural gas (CNG) to retail outlets and piped natural gas (PNG) to households and industries in and around Mumbai.

Government removes Debenture Redemption Reserve requirement for Listed Companies, NBFCs and HFCs

  •  Debenture Redemption Reserve for unlisted companies reduced to 10% of outstanding debentures from the present level of 25%
  • The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has amended the Companies (Share Capital & Debentures) Rules by removing Debenture Redemption Reserve requirement for Listed Companies, NBFCs and HFCs.
  • The decision has been taken in pursuance of the Budget announcements for 2019-20 by Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the Government's objectives of providing greater 'Ease of Doing Business' to companies in the country, as part of its 100 Days Action Plan.

SBI Desires To Eliminate Debit Cards To Make Way For Digital Payments

  •  Chairman of State Bank of India, Rajnish Kumar said In the next five years, there will be a limited need to have any plastic cards in your pocket.
  • Through the Yono platform, one can withdraw cash at the automated teller machines.
  • He said there are around 90 crore debit cards in the country as against 3 crore credit cards, and pointed out to digital solutions like its own 'Yono' platform as the key for achieving a debit card-less country.
  • Bank has already set up 68,000 'Yono cashpoints' and is in the process of scaling it up massively to over 1 million in the next 18 months, which will make the necessity to have a card even less.

APPLE aims for APPLE TV+ Launch

  •  Apple Inc. plans to roll out the Apple TV+ movie and TV subscription service by November 2019, part of a drive to reach $50 billion in service sales by 2020.  
  • A free trial is likely as Apple builds up its library. 
  • With its first foray into video subscriptions, Apple is weighing different release strategies for shows.
  • Apple is considering offering the first three episodes of some programs, followed by weekly installments.

NASA Takes First High-Resolution Measurements Of An Interplanetary Shock

  •  NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission took first high-resolution measurements of an interplanetary shock.  These shocks are made of particles and electromagnetic waves launched by Sun. 
  • These interplanetary shocks provide ideal test beds for learning about larger universal phenomena.
  • Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission is NASA's robotic space mission launched in March 2015 to study Earth's magnetosphere. 
  • It consists of constellation of four identical spacecraft that orbit/fly in tetrahedral formation around Earth through dynamic magnetic system surrounding our planet to study Magnetic reconnection. 
  • It is also designed to gather information about microphysics of energetic particle turbulence and acceleration, processes that occur in many astrophysical plasmas.

Mumbai To Host World Youth Chess Meet

  •  The World Youth Chess championship is being held under the aegis of the All-India Chess Federation and organised by the All-Marathi Chess Association.
  •  Players from 62 countries have confirmed their participation, including Russia, USA, France, Italy and Azerbaijan, to name a few major chess playing nations.
  • The world's second youngest GM R. Praggnanandhaa (14) from India, will be taking part at the World Youth chess championship, to be held  from October 1 to 13, 2019. Divya Deshmukh will spearhead India's challenge in the girls' category.
  • The world's best talent in under-14, u-16 and u-18 categories will be on view.

Hima Das Wins Gold In 300m

  •  Top Indian sprinters Hima Das and Mohammad Anas won a gold each in women's and men's 300m races respectively at the Athleticky Mitink Reiter event in Czech Republic.
  • This was Hima's sixth gold in European races since July 2, 2019 though the field in most of them has been mediocre.
  • Her last win was on July 20, 2019 when she clinched a gold in her pet 400m event at Nove Mesto in Czech Republic.
  • Anas, on the other hand, won the men's 300m race in 32.41 seconds.
  • National record holder Anas has already qualified for 400m event for the World Championships to be held in Doha in September-October, 2019 while Hima is yet to achieve it.

Mitchell Johnson Becomes MCC Honourary Life Member

  •  Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), custodians of the game's laws.
  • The club made the announcement at Lord's, during the second Ashes Test between Australia and England which ended in a draw.
  • Johnson, who has played 73 international Test matches for Australia claiming 313 wickets at an average of 28.40, was "blown away" by the honour.

Flood Will Help Govt Pilot Project On Water Conservation

  •  The surging Yamuna might have temporarily displaced thousands of people but the inundated banks has come as a shot in the arm for the Delhi government, which recently started a pilot project to conserve flood waters to recharge the depleting ground water aquifers on the floodplains.
  • This is a first-of-its-kind project in the country, which aims to conserve excess water flowing down the river during the monsoon by creating a mega reservoir in the floodplains between Palla and Wazirabad.
  • Artificial reservoirs are being created on the Yamuna plains of one metre depth in which floodwater will be collected. This water will gradually recharge and come back to Yamuna through a natural process.

Indian Team Gears Up To Participate In Worldskills International Competition

  •  The 48-member team representing the country at World Skills Kazan 2019 was given a grand sendoff at a ceremony organised by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) under the aegis of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), to motivate the participants as they gear up to pit their skills against the best in the world.
  • Nearly 1,500 competitors from 60 countries will compete in 56 skill competitions at this mega event in Kazan, Russia

 DRDO Hands Over Design Of Mobile Metallic Ramp To Indian Army

  •  The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) handed over to the Army  the design of Mobile Metallic Ramp (MMR) for strategic mobility of armoured and mechanised units as well as formations of the Army.
  • Secretary Department of Defence R&D and Chairman DRDO, Dr G Satheesh Reddy, handed over the design of MMR to Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Devraj Anbu.
  • With load bearing capacity of 70 metric ton (MT), the MMR has been designed and developed by DRDO's premier research laboratory, Centre for Fire, Explosive and Environment Safety (CFEES) on the requirements projected by Army for reducing the Strategic Mobility time of mobilising Armoured Fighting Vehicles.
  • The ramp will provide the strategic mobility for Armoured and Mechanised units and formations of the Army. It is portable, modular in design, which can be easily assembled or disassembled.

Sandeep Kumar Disqualified From Assembly For Defection

  •  Rebel Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and former Delhi minister Sandeep Kumar was disqualified from the Delhi Assembly under the anti-defection law.
  • Kumar is the fourth MLA to be disqualified by Delhi Assembly Speaker Ram Niwas Goel in the last three weeks.
  • The others MLAs are Kapil Mishra, Anil Bajpai and Devinder Sehrawat, who were disqualified, under the anti-defection law, for allegedly supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2019 general elections.
  • With the disqualification of the four MLAs, the strength of legislators in the 70-member House has come down to 66.

  •  BK Sokhey has been appointed as Director (Finance) of NBCC. A B.Com (Hons) from Shree Ram College of Commerce and a fellow of the Institute of Costs Accountants of India, Sokhey joined NBCC in 1990, as accounts officer.
  • She has more than 30 years of rich experience of working in different capacities in all the areas of accounts and finance. NBCC (India) Limited is a blue-chip Government of India Navratna enterprise and a Central Public Sector undertaking which trades publicly in the market.

Italian PM Giuseppe Conte May Step Down

  •  Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte will hand his resignation to the Italian president after telling lawmakers that his deputy's self-interested and irresponsible rebellion means the administration can't continue.
  • But Conte may not be ready to step aside just yet — he also savaged Matteo Salvini's demands for a snap election. Conte could stay in office and thwart Salvini's power grab if he can stitch together a fresh majority and persuade head of state Sergio Mattarella to give him a second shot at governing.

  • The J C Bose fellowship is awarded to active scientists in recognition of their outstanding performance by the Science and Engineering Research Board, Department of Science & Technology.

Draft National Resource Efficiency Policy, 2019

  •  Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC)  released Draft National Resource Efficiency Policy, 2019. 
  • It has invited comments and suggestions from stakeholders including public/private organizations, experts and concerned citizens on the draft policy.
  • Natural resources form backbone of any economic development. 
  • India, as one of fastest growing economies with GDP at US $2.6 trillion has increased its material consumption to six times, from 1.18 billion tonnes (BT) in 1970 to 7 BT in 2015.
  • It is expected to increase further to provide for increasing population, rapid urbanization and growing aspirations. 

Punjab Rolls Out Mega Health Insurance Scheme

  •  The Punjab government  rolled out a mega health insurance scheme clubbing the Centre's Ayushman Bharat plan with its own, a combination which will benefit 46 lakh families covering 76 per cent of the state's population.
  • The 'Mahatma Gandhi Sarbat Sehat Bima Yojana' incorporates the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), the Centre's health insurance scheme for the poor unveiled in September 2018 and kept on hold so far by the Punjab government.

3000th Railway Station Gets Wi-Fi

  •  Ellenabad railway station under Bikaner Division of North Western Railway, became the 3000th station in the country to have free public Wi-Fi.
  • A historic town in Haryana, Ellenabad is situated at the north of the Ghaggar- Hakra river, and serves as a port of entry into Haryana from Rajasthan. 
  • Incidentally, the 2000th station to get Wi-Fi was Rana Pratap Nagar, also under the North Western Railway, on August 3, 2019. 
  • Indian Railways' promise to provide free Wi-Fi at all stations, (except the halt stations), for which Team RailTel is making efforts to meet the target.
  • In the first phase, Wi-Fi was provided 'live' at 1600 stations across country. RailTel has now roped in Tata Trust for providing Wi-Fi at the remaining railway stations across the country.

Amit Shah Lays Foundation Stone Of Karbi & Dimasa Bhawan

  •  The BJP is committed to taking development to North East India said Union Home Minister Amit Shah at the foundation stone laying ceremony of Karbi Bhawan and Dimasa Bhawan at Dwarka, Sector 13, Plot 11 and 12. 
  • The Karbi Bhawan and Dimasa Bhawan are one of the conditions in the signing of Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) by the United People's Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) and Dima Halam Daogah (DHD) respectively. Each project cost Rs. 62 crore.
  • This Karbi Bhawan and Dimasa Bhawan will expose the culture of the Karbi and Dimsa tribe to the people of India.
  • The region that was formerly known for terrorism and underdevelopment is now known for building roads, railways and other projects. 
  • In 5 years Prime Minister Narendra Modi has increased the funding of NE to 258%  with the 13th and 14th Finance Commission.
  • Bamboo Industry Park in Dima Hasao, Government Law College in Diphu, Media Centre in Haflong, etc among the projects being taken up from the Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao.
