New Rule Likely To Hit Indians Eyeing US Green Cards

  •  Under a new rule that goes into effect, the United States will start denying Green Cards and extensions of other temporary-stay visas to foreigners who have either used government assistance such as food stamps and housing rent or are likely to become someone who relies on "public benefits".
  • Experts estimate that this rule, called the "Inadmissibility on Public Charge Grounds", is the most significant of the Trump administration's immigration moves and could cut legal immigration by half -- also affecting Indians.

DTC Suspends Bus Service Between Delhi And Lahore

  •  The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) has cancelled the bus between Delhi and Lahore as Pakistan informed it that the service was suspended in the wake of India revoking Jammu and Kashmir's special status.
  • The Delhi-Lahore bus service was first started in February 1999 but suspended after the 2001 Parliament attack.
  • It was restarted in July 2003. The ridership of the bus had drastically reduced post the Pulwama terrorist attack and the Balakot surgical strikes in February, 2019 which strained Indo-Pak relations.

Hong Kong Airport Grinds To a Halt

  • Hong Kong's airport halted flights , blaming demonstrators for the disruption. The airport authority said it was working with airlines to resume flights from 6am on August 13, 2019 but the developments raised the stakes sharply after a weekend of skirmishes during which both activists and police toughened their stances.
  • The protests began in opposition to a bill allowing extraditions to the mainland for trial in Communist-controlled courts, but have widened to highlight other grievances.

  •  The Trump administration  rolled out some of the broadest changes in decades to enforcement of the landmark Endangered Species Act, allowing the government to put an economic cost on saving a species and other changes critics contend could speed extinction for some struggling plants and animals.
  • Interior secretary David Bernhardt and other administration officials contend the changes improve efficiency of oversight , while protecting rare species.

Indian Railways Launches Onboard Shopping

  •  Indian Railways introduced onboard shopping in train for passengers traveling in the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Karnavati Express. 
  • The services will start from August 15, 2019 and passengers can enjoy it on both the directions of the train.
  • This will give the opportunity to passengers to buy FMCG products of daily need while commuting. 

Reliance To Sell Stake To Saudi Aramco To Turn Debt-Free By '21

  •  Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) is in the process of selling a 20% stake in the company's flagship chemicals and refining business to Saudi Aramco in a deal valued at $15 billion, as the Indian company seeks to cut its massive debt and secure an assured supply of crude oil to its refineries.
  • Chairman Mukesh Ambani, Asia's richest man, announced the proposed transaction at the company's 42nd annual general meeting.
  • The deal, which values the oil to-chemicals (O2C) business at $75 billion, is part of a plan to make RIL a zero-debt company in the next 18 months.

Chandrayaan-2 Onto Next Step

  •  The Chandrayaan-2, currently revolving in a highly elliptical orbit around the Earth, will be injected in a trans-lunar path. This means the spacecraft will leave the Earth and move towards the moon. 
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will perform a trans-lunar injection to set the Chandrayaan-2 on its path towards the moon.
  • The spacecraft, which is currently revolving in a highly elliptical orbit around the Earth, will be injected in a trans-lunar path to cover most of the 384,400-km distance between the Earth and the moon.

Kerala Signs MoU With ISRO VSSC To Promote Space Technology

  •  The Kerala government and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to give a push to the state's endeavour in space technology.
  • The agreement was signed by State IT Secretary M Sivasankar and VSSC Director S Somanath. It was signed  in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan
  • With the MoU, Kerala is set to make major strides in the space technology sector.
  • This partnership will create an ideal ambiance for advanced research and development in space technology.

SpaceX Falcon Launched Israel's Amos Telecommunications Satellite

  •  The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched Israeli telecommunications satellite called Amos-17 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. The satellite was launched successfully into the geosynchronous transfer orbit .
  • The launch was a makeup launch for Spacecom when a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket exploded on the launch pad in 2016. Amos-17 has been designed to provide enhanced voice, video and data services to customers in Africa and parts of Europe, the Middle East, India and China.

Mewar Royals Claim To Be Ram Descendants

  •  Former Mewar royals have claimed that they are descendants of Lord Ram's son Luv, after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker and member of the erstwhile Jaipur royal family Diya Kumari made a similar claim.
  • Lakshyaraj Singh of the erstwhile Mewar royal family said Luv had established "Luvkote" and his ancestors had come to Ahad (Mewar), and established the Sisodia dynasty.
  •  BJP MP from Rajsamand Diya Kumari had tweeted that her family is a descendant of Lord Ram's son Kush, a day after a Supreme Court bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi had asked, out of curiosity, whether anyone from the Raghuvansha (Lord Ram's dynasty) was still residing in Ayodhya.
  • The SC is hearing the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case on a daily basis.
  • Now, the former Mewar royals claim themselves to be descendents of Lord Ram, citing experts and historians like Col James Todd. Quoting content from the "Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan" written by Todd, Singh said while Lord Ram's capital was Ayodhya, his son Luv had established Luvkote or the present-day Lahore.
  • The sun is the emblem of the Mewar royal family. Lord Ram was a worshipper of Lord Shiva and the Mewar royals worship Eklingnath or Lord Shiva.

Ravidas Temple Demolition In Tughlaqabad, Delhi

  •  Members of the Dalit community held protests and blocked highways, hours after the Supreme Court orders over the demolition of Guru Ravidas temple in Tughlaqabad area in Delhi.
  • Amid the State-wide protest by Ravidas community over the alleged demolition of a temple in New Delhi on the purported direction of apex court, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to pacify the community leaders.
  • Mr. Singh made the appeal to the Prime Minister as community members holding demonstrations under the banner of Guru Ravidas Jayanti Samaroh Samiti called for a nationwide shutdown on August 13, 2019.
  • It has also decided to observe Independence Day as a 'Black Day' to protest the demolition of the temple in New Delhi's Tughlakabad area.
  • Historic temple of Shri Guru Ravidas located in Shri Guru Ravidas Marg, New Delhi's Tughalaqabad Village was demolished by the Delhi Development Authority on orders of the Supreme Court inciting intense protests and agitation. 

UP Govt Creates World Record By Planting Over Crore Saplings

  •  Uttar Pradesh(UP) chief minister(CM) Yogi Adityanath launched the mega greenery plantation drive called "Vriksharopan Mahakumbh" sets a world record by planting over 22 crore saplings in a day.
  • The state entered the Guinness World Records' for distributing 76,823 saplings simultaneously in six hours across the state.
  •  The 2nd record was made for planting 1.1 lakh saplings in Kasganj in presence of UP governor, Anandi Ben Patel. 
  • The 3rd record was made in Prayagraj for distribution of a record of 66,000 saplings at the same place in a certain time frame.
  • The 4th record was made for planting 22 crore saplings in a day. 
  • The state announced to plant 25 crore saplings in the Van Mahotsav in 2020. Adityanath unveiled the logo of 'Vriksharopan Mahakumbh' and handed saplings of 'Sahjan' (Drumstick) to 5 rural women.
  • The CM launched the drive by planting Harishankari, a combination of three sacred trees (peepul, pakar and banyan) at Jaitikheda area in Lucknow.

Wrestler Babita Phogat And Father Join Bjp

  •  Ahead of the Haryana assembly elections, international wrestler Babita Phogat and her father Mahavir Phogat joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi.
  • An Arjuna awardee, Babita won the silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. She bagged a gold medal in the same event at Glasgow in 2014 and at Gold Coast, Australia in 2018.
  • Both Babita and her father,a Dronacharya awardee, joined the BJP in the presence of sports and youth affairs minister Kiren Rijiju, party's general secretary in charge of Haryana Anil Jain and state chief Subhash Badala.
  • The Phogat household came to be known nationwide following the success of Hindi film Dangal, which was loosely based on the lives of Phogat sisters, all of them wrestlers, and their father who coached them against all odds.

NITI Aayog To Launch 4th Edition Of WTI Awards

  •  NITI Aayog launched the 4th Edition of Women Transforming India (WTI) Awards. The WTI Awards is being organized in collaboration with the United Nations to recognize women entrepreneurs from across India.
  • This year's theme is 'Women and Entrepreneurship', in continuation of the theme for WTI Awards 2018. WhatsApp collaborated with NITI Aayog for WTI Awards 2019. The main aim is to provide support amounting to US$100,000 to the award winners.
  • The Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP) is a Government of India initiative by NITI Aayog to promote and support aspiring as well as established women entrepreneurs in India, assist and handhold them in their journey from starting to scaling up and expanding their ventures.

Power Subsidy Expands in Delhi

  •  The Delhi government will extend its 100% power subsidy scheme to those domestic consumers who manage to keep their power bills to at most Rs. 800
  • Others who consume up to 400 units will also get a discount of Rs. 800 on their monthly bills.
  • Soon after the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC), a quasi-judicial independent body, announced new tariffs effective from August 1, 2019, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had offered a power subsidy scheme for domestic consumers who consume a maximum of 200 units of power every month, with the additional caveat of a maximum 5kW sanctioned load.

'Uber For Tractors': Government To Launch App To Aid Farmers

  •  India's agriculture ministry developed a farm equipment rental app for Indian farmers let with hire tractors, rotavator. This app will be similar to Uber and this corresponding mobile app is expected to be launched by the end of August, 2019. 
  • There are now more than 38,000 custom hiring centres (CHCs) across the country, which rent out 2.5 lakh pieces of farm equipment every year. 
  • The CHC app is already open for registrations by the farmers, societies and entrepreneurs who run these centres. So far, almost 26,800 CHCs have registered to offer more than one lakh pieces of equipment for hire.
  • The Ministry's app will also create an invaluable database for policy-makers, who can track the use and cost of equipment.
  • The system would also help to track the usage of new technology that the government wants to promote, such as the Happy Seeder that aims to prevent stubble burning that causes air pollution, or solar dryers that can help farmers process and preserve their produce.

Book Brahma, a Portal Cataloguing Kannada Books

  •  On an average, over 4,000 books are published in Kannada annually but the biggest challenge for bibliophiles is to find them.
  • To fill this gap comes a new portal called Book Brahma (https://bookbrahma.com), which is exclusively for Kannada books and something on the lines of Goodreads. The portal, presently on a trial run, will go live on August 15, 2019.
  • The portal seeks to go beyond the features of Goodreads to not just catalogue reader reviews, but also literary criticism of the books, provide book news and related audio-visual content, including interviews of authors.

Tamil Book Oru Manidhan Oru Iyakkam Kalaignar Mu Karunanidhi Released By K Veeramani

  •  The book titled 'Oru Manidhan Oru Iyakkam Kalaignar Mu. Karunanidhi' in Tamil language . It refers the life and work of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (Dravidian Progressive Conference) (DMK) leader Late M Karunanidhi, the former Tamil Nadu chief minister launched by K Veeramani, president of Dravidar Kazhagam in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.The book was first published by Frontline. It is a publication of The Hindu group.
  • Frontline was an experienced 35 years in journalism. The book includes all the articles published in the special issue – 'A Man and a Movement.'
  • It was brought out in August 2018 as a tribute to M Karunanidhi. It was launched one day before the first death anniversary of Late M Karunanidhi.
