Greek Conservatives on Track for Landslide Win

  • According to early results, Greece's opposition conservatives were on track to return to power by a landslide, unseating incumbent leftists blamed for foisting a bailout on the country which critics say was unnecessary.
  • The win appeared driven by fatigue with years of European Union-enforced belt-tightening, combined with high unemployment, after the country almost crashed out of the euro zone at the height of its financial travails in 2015.
  • Exit polls gave conservative New Democracy a commanding lead of between 38% and 42% of the vote, suggesting an outright majority in Greece's parliament.
  • New Democracy, led by opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis, was seen winning between 155 and 167 seats in the 300 member parliament.
  • Shortly after the projection was announced, incumbent Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras called Mitsotakis to congratulate him.

Imran Khan to Visit Russia

  • Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan would travel to Russia in September to attend the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).
  • Khan accepted Russian President Vladimir Putin's invitation, which was extended last month in a conversation between the two leaders on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Bishkek.
  • The EEF is scheduled to be held from September 4 to 6 in Vladivostok.
  • President Putin also invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be the main guest at the EEF in Vladivostok and he warmly accepted the invitation.
  • Several world leaders are expected to attend the event which is held annually since 2015 in the same city.

Saudi King Meets UK Treasury Chief

  • Saudi Arabia's King Salman met British treasury chief Philip Hammond to discuss economic and financial investments between the two countries and security cooperation amid heightened tensions with Iran.
  • The British Foreign Office said that Hammond travelled with a delegation that includes the UK investment minister and CEO of London's stock exchange as Saudi Arabia mulled listing internationally a much-anticipated and long-delayed public offering of its oil company Aramco by 2021.

Maruti Slashes Production

  • According to a regulatory filing, the country's largest car maker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) has cut vehicle production for the fifth consecutive month in June.
  • The auto company slashed total vehicle production, including Super Carry light commercial vehicle (LCV), by 15.6% last month to 111,917 units as compared to 132,616 units in the year-ago month.
  • Total passenger vehicle (PV) production stood at 109,641 units last month, down 16.34% from 131,068 units in June 2018.
  • The auto company cut production of mini segment vehicles, including models like Alto, by 48.2% to 15,087 units last month as against 29,131 units in the year-ago period.
  • Similarly, it slashed production of compact segment cars like WagonR, Swift and Dzire by 1.46% to 66,436 units in June from 67,426 units earlier.
  • Production of utility vehicles witnessed a decline of 5.26% to 17,074 units, as against 18,023 units in June last year.
  • The company said production of vans declined by 27.87% to 8,501 units last month compared to 11,787 units in June 2018.
  • Slowdown in vehicle sales have also impacted Maruti's financial performance in the last fiscal year with the company reporting a 2.9% drop in net profit to, while revenue grew 6.3%.

Commonwealth Chess Championship

  • Favourite Abhijeet Gupta claimed his fifth title as India swept medals in all 16 sections of the Commonwealth chess championship.
  • After two other leaders, S. L. Narayanan and Aravindh Chithambaram, drew their top board battle in 32 moves, Abhijeet caught Arjun Erigaisi in a checkmating net in 39 moves to reach 7.5 points.
  • Aravindh topped a three-way tie for the second spot with Swapnil Dhopade and Narayanan at seven points.
  • Tania Sachdev retained the women's title after an anxious wait. After being tied at six points with Divya Deshmukh, Tania took the title on superior tie-break score. Bhakti Kulkarni came third.

National Under-17 Chess Championship

  • West Bengal's Neelash Saha stayed steady and won the open title while State-mate Samriddhaa Ghosh pulled off a big surprise to pocket the girls' trophy in the 30th National under-17 chess championship at the Oberon Mall here on Sunday.
  • The second-seeded Neelash, the overnight leader and a former under-13 National champion, had a good run here and defeated Gujarat's Aditya P. Melani in the final round.

Wrestling Grand Prix of Spain

  • Putting up a dominating show, India's top wrestler Vinesh Phogat won her first gold medal after shifting to 53 kg category, while Divya Kakran claimed the top honours in the 68 kg category at the Grand Prix of Spain.
  • Vinesh, one of India's medal hopefuls at the 2020 Tokyo Games, competed in her third tournament in the new category.

Mumbai Congress President Resigns

  • Mumbai Congress president Milind Deora announced his resignation from the post and said that he was looking forward to play a role at the national level to help stabilise the party.
  • He recommended setting up of a provisional collective leadership comprising three senior Congress leaders to oversee the city party unit till the Maharashtra Assembly polls which are due later this year.
  • Deora expressed his desire to quit shortly after meeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi in June.

Biometric Tracking for Illegal Immigrants

  • The Assam government, together with the Union home ministry, plans to introduce a biometric-based real-time tracking system for suspected illegal immigrants identified though the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
  • The tracking system would be part of a Rs. 99 crore e-Foreigners' Tribunal project, a digital platform that would ensure illegal immigrants are not issued government-approved identity documents such as passports, driving licences, PAN cards, etc and they do not have access to social welfare schemes once they are declared foreigners.
  • Around four million Assam residents were not included in the NRC draft released in July 2018. Earlier this week, the NRC secretariat released an additional draft list of over 100,000 people who were excluded from the register.
  • Those whose names do not figure in the final list would have to appeal in the foreigners' tribunals, the quasi judicial bodies where they will have to prove their citizenship.

Sapna Choudhary Joins BJP

  • After months of speculation, singer and dancer Sapna Choudhary joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Choudhary joined the party during a membership drive in the national capital.
  • She joined the party at a ceremony organised at the Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium which was attended by Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari, party's state in-charge Shyam Jaju and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, among others.

Indian Army to Buy American Howitzer Ammo

  • Seeking to acquire the capability to hit enemy positions close to populated areas without causing collateral damage, the Indian Army is in the process of acquiring Excalibur guided long-range artillery ammunition which can strike targets more than 50 km away.
  • The acquisition case is being processed under the emergency powers for procurement of weapon systems and ammunition to be war-ready in post-Pulwama attack-like situations.
  • The ammunition is being acquired for units deployed along the Line of Control where artillery shelling by Pakistan is a common feature.

Three Successful Nag Missile Tests

  • Moving closer toward the induction of the Nag anti-tank guided missiles into the Army, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) carried out three successful test firings of the missiles in the Pokhran firing ranges.
  • The missiles were test-fired during both day and night during the trials. All three tests were successful.
  • As per reports, the missile is in the final stages of being inducted into the Army which will use it by mounting them on the modified armoured vehicles.

Bill to Speed up Lutyens' Eviction

  • The Centre would introduce an amendment bill to make it easier for the government to evict squatters, including overstaying former MPs and ministers and even secretary-level officials, from government accommodation in Lutyens' Delhi.
  • The housing and urban affairs ministry would introduce the Public Premises (Eviction of Unauthorised Occupants) Amendment Bill, which would amend the 1971 legislation and make it easier for the government to evict overstaying officials and free up houses.
  • Amendments to three major sections in the Act would help the government in starting eviction proceedings within three days of the term of the official ending. At present, the process takes five to seven weeks, and several years if the official files an appeal against eviction in a civil court.

Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan

  • Following a directive by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, one of the three central institutes in the country promoting Sanskrit, adopted five villages across the country to ensure people are able to converse in the language.
  • The Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan (RKS), Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha in Delhi and the Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha in Tirupati are the three central institutes promoting the more than 3,500-year-old language.
  • The HRD Ministry directed the three institutes to adopt two villages and teach the language in a bid to boost Sanskrit as a spoken language.

Jaipur Declared World Heritage Site

  • The Walled City of Jaipur, known for its iconic architectural legacy and vibrant culture, Saturday made its entry into the UNESCO World Heritage Site list.
  • The announcement was made after the 43rd Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, underway at Baku (Azerbaijan) from June 30 to July 10, examined the nomination of the Walled City of Jaipur for inclusion in the World Heritage list.
  • The historic walled city of Jaipur in Rajasthan was founded in 1727 AD under the patronage of Sawai Jai Singh II. It serves as the capital city of the culturally-rich state of Rajasthan.
  • "The city was proposed to be nominated for its value of being an exemplary development in town planning and architecture that demonstrates an amalgamation and important exchange of ideas in the late medieval period.
  • The World Heritage Committee is composed of representatives of 21 States Parties to the World Heritage Convention who meet annually. The Committee is in charge of implementing the Convention. To date, 1,092 sites in 167 countries have been inscribed on the World Heritage List.

Smallest Lord Jagannath's Chariot

  • Artist Satya Maharana has created a miniature version of Nandighosa-- Lord Jagannath's chariot for Rath Yatra. The creation has got an entry into the India Book of Records and International Book of Records for being the smallest of its kind.
  • Maharana, from Berhampur in Odisha, worked continuously for four days to create the chariot, and expressed hope that he would achieve more recognition for the piece of work. He claimed that The Guinness Book of Records has given its consent to give it a special tag.
